We might as well sing Mother Goose rhymes!

We might as well sing Mother Goose rhymes!

“My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign.”

We sing that โ€” but we might as well sing Mother Goose rhymes, because we do not mean what we are singing!

If God Almighty compelled us to be entirely 100 percent honest, we simply could not sing the the average hymn โ€” because their words would not be true of us!

“All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

I surrender all,
I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.”

(A.W. Tozer)

๐Ÿค”My Thoughts…

This morning after reading this quote, i thought about our popular and modernย โ€œWorshipโ€ songs, and how a lot of them are about our feelings, our happiness and what God can do for us. Rather than elevating His Holy name as we sing His Glory and Praise as we are lost in Wonder!

  1. Try this Sovereign Grace for a song which does what you propose…https://g.co/kgs/hp0vk9 We have been singing it for about a decade now. Great lyrics.

  2. Steve, thanks for this post, you are so right, As Tozer implied sometimes I sing a song and am almost brought to tears, not because of some “emotional response” but the conviction of how much I have let God down in some specific area.

In the church I attend we sing mostly “traditional hymns” with one more modern hymn, They are careful to select a modern hymn that extols God’s name and His Glory caring little about our “experiancings feelings”.

    • Amen. As i’m registered blind i can’t sing along with a lot of the hymns/songs, but when i’m in the congregation and i am ensconced in the sound of many voices, the mighty proclamation of the words from the older hymns leaves me with Awe and Wonder towards our Awesome God!

I always(with my screenreader) read each verse of the hymns and they just blow me away with how much doctrine and Truth they contain. And compared with a lot of modern songs which bring our Lord right down to our level, they seem really puny! Saying that i can get lost in wonder singing a simple chorus to our Lord but it just isn’t the same.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving this great comment!

      God bless you. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. You’re right, Steve! We should be blessing God for His mercy and grace, ‘Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, Bless His Holy Name’. . .Psalm 103 begins and ends with ‘Bless the LORD, O my soul.’ PTL!
