Religious entertainment!

Religious entertainment!

(A.W. Tozer)

A great company of evangelical churches have already gone over into the area of religious entertainment, so that many churches are tramping on the doorstep of the theater!

The tragic results of this spirit are all about us:
shallow lives,
hollow religious philosophies,
the preponderance of the element of fun in gospel meetings,
the glorification of men,
trust in religious externalities,
quasi-religious fellowships,
salesmanship methods,
the mistaking of dynamic personality for the power of the Spirit.

These and such as these, are the symptoms of an evil disease–a deep and serious malady of the soul.

Religious entertainment has so corrupted the Church, that millions don’t know that it’s a heresy. Millions of evangelicals throughout the world have devoted themselves to religious entertainment. They don’t know that it’s as much heresy, as the “counting of beads” or the “splashing of holy water” or something else. To expose this, of course, raises a storm of angry protest among the people.

Isn’t there a difference between worship and entertainment?

The church that can’t worship, must be entertained. And men who can’t lead a church to worship, must provide the entertainment. That is why we have the great evangelical heresy here today–the heresy of religious entertainment!

  1. Oh well expressed! Holiness and accountability for actions is often overridden by the sheer desire to ‘keep the people happy’. Entertainment at the expense of quiet reflections etc on the sheer Majesty and Authority of the God we should be worshipping. Too much of the visual titillating to evoke ‘well being’ .and keep the bottoms on the seats.

  2. Spot-on! I, too, am convicted that to worship God is to reach up, not down.

  3. Thanks for visiting me. I would like to follow you but don’t find the button.

    • Hi, thanks so much for taking time to visit me here.

Your comment has highlighted a few things i’ve missed. I’ve been into the widget section and found that i hadn’t added the follow me button. Sorry….Now i have added an assortment of buttons which you’ll now find at the very top of the sidebar on the right hand side of the blog.

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. As i’m registered blind i can miss some things and it’s really helpful to get a comment to help me out….I love the blogging community!

Take care & God bless. ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. My pastor husband and I have often lamented how much the church has turned to entertainment to bring in new members while not holding forth the Word of Life. In fact the church we were called to, had a split over music (which I discern was more over personalities and control rather than music.)

Those two people are still a thorn in our side – however, ๐Ÿ™‚ by preaching Scripture, God has brought amazing godly people into our church because they were hungry for Truth not programs. By remaining faithful to the Lord our little church has doubled in size while attracting former pastors and wise women of God to come alongside us. Let Him be Praised! (Oh! And thank you so much Steve for reblogging my post. That was so kind and so appreciated.) Blessings back,

Any thoughts? I'd love to hear from you!
