The evangelistic methods of our present golden-calf Christianity!
Any objection to the evangelistic methods of our present golden-calf Christianity, is met with the triumphant reply, “But we are winning the lost!”
And what are you winning them to?
To true discipleship?
To cross-carrying?
To self-denial?
To separation from the world?
To crucifixion of the flesh?
To holy living?
To nobility of character?
To a despising of the world’s treasures?
To total committal to Christ?
Of course, the answer to all these questions is NO!

Far to many “churches” and those occupying their pulpits today have forgotten the command “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 2:4).
Very few preach that which rebukes and reproves even though it is plainly in the text. The fail to exhort sound doctrine instead they resort to preaching the things that “itchy ears” want to hear.
But we can take great consolation in the fact that God is in control of ALL things, even this, and He has a plan for those who fail in this area. (James 3:1) My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation..

In my experience, especially with the large congregations, is that they do work very hard to make Jesus attractive and get the salvation message across to people walking in the doors for the first time. I thought, that’s so great! But with many, not all, that’s the focus. I thought, how can they be faulted for THAT!? But after that is a somewhat empty time of meeting. A lot of times there isn’t nourishment, tending, help with growth-you would need to do that on your own. Which I did, and do. No problem right? Well, actually, I would have liked some help. But the focus wasn’t on that ‘phase’. If we are on our own after salvation and baptism, is that the right way to go? I know this mainly because sermons are about basic ‘good’ action and behavior, almost never about the things listed in your list, at congregations I was a part of (two for about 7 years each). Because those concepts on your list in your post are deeper concepts, the unsaved visiting and the newly saved would likely not understand, so those subjects are not covered. The practice of covering the pleasant aspects of the Christian life and never the more difficult aspects does very little to equip a believer and follower of Jesus.
Hi Debbie! Thank you so much for sharing some of your experience, i too am going through a similar time as my local church is more concerned about social and political things rather than feeding the sheep. It is about entertaining and not Sanctifying with Truth of God’s Word.
I think this is why this post hit me so hard, they wouldn’t dare mention anything in this post as it may offend someone!
As i’m studying the 17th,18th & 19th century men of God & preachers, i’m noticing a stark contrast on how they preached the Truth and nothing else. Now i hardly ever hear the Truth in our services, they preach themselves or some other funny stories to get us to laugh etc. It truly breaks my heart and i’m constantly praying for a revival in our pulpits etc. The sheep are starving and the goats are laughing.

The sheep ARE starving 😦 !!! You said it!! I had a dream many years ago. In the dream my ‘worldly friends’ were pulling my arm to go with them, somewhere unspecified, and I wouldn’t go, and wasn’t planning to go with them, but ‘they’ were there. They were behind me sort of and I was not looking at them, I was looking away from them, at some birds. The birds were very small, and VERY tired. I could tell they were exhausted, because 1. they actually looked sweaty, and 2. I could tell they were about to die from exhaustion and a long journey. They only needed water-that’s all they needed. I gave them some water. I set it before them, and they drank. I cannot describe the change exactly, but I’ll try. They began flying around with exuberance! So, they were strengthened AND excited. Also, they had light inside of them after they drank. I’ll never forget what that looked like, because there is nothing like that I’ve ever seen. They became light, internally, after they drank. I could see the light in them. There was no trace of exhaustion.
