Hi Friends…The Story Behind Ensconced in Light

Ensconced in Light started with a practical problem.

As someone who is registered blind, I use VoiceOver on my iPhone, iPad and iMac every day, as well as VoiceVista when I am out walking. These technologies are incredibly important to me, but they also mean that sound is a big part of how I interact with the world…And when you love music, that can create a problem.

Lyrics can be distracting.

During my walks, if I am listening to vocals while VoiceOver is speaking, or VoiceVista is giving me directions, my brain has to decide which voice to concentrate on (I really don’t need any more cognitive overload). So I wanted music that could sit underneath all of that. Something beautiful, peaceful and unobtrusive. Something I could listen to while walking, working, praying or simply relaxing…That was the starting point for Ensconced in Light.

But I also didn’t want to make just another ambient album. I wanted it to feel like a journey. A journey through stillness, life, faith, eternity and ultimately home. The ten tracks follow that journey, beginning with When I Dream of Heaven and moving through Beyond the Veil, The Open Heavens and Beside Still Waters.

At the centre is Ensconced in Light, which became the title of the album. To me, it describes the feeling of being surrounded not just by sound, but by light, peace and the presence of the blessed assurance we have in Christ. The journey then continues through Echoes of Eternity, Walking Toward Home, The Long Road to Glory and Where the Saints Remain, before reaching Until I See His Face.

There are no lyrics on the album, and that was completely deliberate (which was so hard for me as I love words, especially The Word). I wanted the music to leave room for my/your own thoughts, prayers and imagination, while also allowing me to use it alongside the technology that helps me navigate the world. For me, Ensconced in Light is ultimately a Christian journey towards our heavenly home. It is about faith, eternity, God’s presence and the anticipation of finally seeing His face on that Glorious day! 😲

I hope these songs can become a small soundtrack to your own journey, accompanying you through whatever moments lie ahead. Maybe you will listen while walking, praying, working, travelling or falling asleep. Or perhaps you will simply put it on, turn everything else down for a while and breathe.
