The one indispensable book!

(Daniel March, 1870)

The Bible is theย oldest–and theย newestย of books.

The Bible surveys the whole field ofย time–and it looks farthest into the infinite depths ofย eternity.ย

The Bible lends the most vivid and absorbing interest to the scenes and events of theย past–and it keeps us in the most active sympathy with the time in which we live.ย

The Bible gives us the most reliable record of whatย hasย been–and it affords us our only means of knowing what isย yetย to be.ย

The Bible isย holyย enough to denounce the very shadow and semblance of sin–and it isย mercifulย enough to save the chief of sinners.ย

The Bible is full ofย God–and must therefore be read with a pure heart, or its true glory will not be seen.ย
The Bible is full ofย man–and must therefore always be interesting and instructive to all who would know themselves.

The Bible is theย plainestย of books–and yet it hasย depths of wisdomย which no created mind can fathom.ย

The Bible is set up as a beacon to show all wanderers the safe way–and yet its light shines forth from thick clouds of mystery, and from abysses of infinite darkness.ย

The Bible describes all conditions of life–and it gives utterance to all desires and emotions of the soul.ย

The Bible has a song of triumph for theย overcomer–and a wail of defeat for theย overcome.ย

The Bible . . .
ย  sparkles with the fervor and gladness ofย youth,
ย  celebrates the strength and glory ofย manhood,
ย  bewails the sorrows and infirmities ofย old age.ย

The Bible . . .
ย  exults in the mighty deeds of kings and conquerors,ย
ย  sympathizes with the poor and lowly,ย
ย  lifts up the fallen,ย
ย  delivers the oppressed, andย
ย  breathes the blessing of peace upon the quiet homes of domestic life.ย

The Bible describes with startling clearness . . .
ย  the seductions ofย temptation,
ย  the conflicts ofย doubtย and
ย  the miseries ofย skepticism.ย

The Bible . . .
ย  searches the secret chambers of theย heart,ย
ย  brings to light its purest love and its darkest hate,ย
ย  reveals its highest joy and its deepest grief.ย

The Bible compasses the utmost range ofย thoughtย andย feelingย andย desire–and it sounds the utmost depth ofย motiveย andย characterandย passion.

Thus in the Bible,ย
ย  God and man,
ย  earth and heaven,
ย  time and eternity–
speak with one voice and teach the same truth.ย

The Bible sets forth the most spiritual and heavenly truths–in the lights and shadows of earthly scenes and human characters.ย

Thus the Bible isย the one indispensable bookย . . .
ย  for all ages–and all nations,
ย  for all classes of men–and all states of society,
ย  for all capacities of intellect–and all necessities of the soul!
