The Complaint!

(James Smith, 1864)

“O my God, my soul is cast down within me!”ย Psalm 42:6ย

Andย whyย are you cast down?ย

“My heart is burdened with a sense of my short-comings.ย
ย Every holyย dutyย I perform is so imperfect.ย
ย Every goodย purposeย I form is so soon frustrated.ย
ย Everyย hopeย of seeing better days is so soon beclouded.
ย Myย heartย is so fearfully depraved.
ย Myย lifeย is so unlike the life of Jesus.
ย Myย affectionsย are so unholy.
ย Myย prayersย are so brief and heartless.
ย Myย praisesย are so feeble and fitful.
ย Iย doย so little good.
ย Iย liveย to so little purpose.
ย Myย evidencesย are so dim.ย
ย Myย prospectsย are so overcast.ย
ย I am harassed sometimes with theย fear of death.ย
ย I cannot grasp the glories ofย Heaven.ย
ย I am dissatisfied with theย world–and yet glued to it!ย
ย I hateย sin–and yet fall into it!ย
ย I am a riddle, a mystery, a mass of inconsistency!ย
ย Is it, then, any wonder that I am cast down?”ย

No, if you look atย yourself, and pore over the things you have named–then it is no wonder that you are cast down! They are enough to cast anyone down! But if you carry them to theย throne of grace, if you thereย confessย them before God, if you look to the mercy of Jesus–then, in spite of them, you will not long be cast down.ย

I know it is difficult to do this. There is aย natural pronenessย to pore over such things. One feels at times a secret likingย to indulge in self-pity.ย

But we must look away fromย self–for if we do not, we shall become anxious, doubting and downcast! We mustย run the race–not looking atย ourย imperfections, short-comings, and failures–but looking unto Jesus. He knows what weย are. He knew what weย wouldbe–before He called us by His grace; yes, before He shed His sin-atoning blood for us!ย
Heย lovedย us, as sinners.ย
Heย diedย for us, as sinners.ย
Heย calledย us, as sinners.ย
Heย savesย us, as sinners.ย
He will have great glory by savingย such great sinners.ย We cannot do anything toย repayย Him for His wondrous love. Salvation is byย free grace–from first to last! Believe this, and it will raise up your drooping mind!

The life-boat of free graceย has put you on board theย vessel of salvation, and that will convey you safely to theย port of glory!ย Do not look atย yourย spiritual destitution, or feebleness, or incapacity, or imperfections–but trust in yourย Pilot, rely on yourย Captain, and expect His mercy and merit to land you safely in Heaven at last!ย

Regardless of any amount of spiritual progress, yourย dying prayerย will still be,ย “God be merciful unto me–a sinner!”

Hope in God!
Hisย mercyย is great unto the Heavens,ย
Hisย graceย is as free as the air,ย
Hisย loveย is as changeless as His nature,
Hisย promiseย is as immutable as His love.ย

He will save you for His own sake, and present you before assembled worlds as aย monument of His mercy,ย and aย trophy of His grace!

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?ย Why so disturbed within me?
ย
Put your hope in God,ย for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and ย my God!”ย Psalm 42:5

The only effectual reformer of the world!

The only effectual reformer of the world!

(Samuel Davies, “Serious Reflections on WAR” 1757)

“When He comesโ€”He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment!” John 16:8

The Holy Spirit is the only effectual reformer of the world! If He is absentโ€”

legislators may make laws against crime;
philosophers may reason against vice;
ministers may preach against sin;
conscience may remonstrate against evil;
the divine law may prescribe, and threaten hell;
the gospel may invite and allure to heaven;

but all will be in vain!

The strongest arguments, the most melting entreaties, the most alarming denunciations from God and man, enforced with the highest authority, or the most compassionate tearsโ€”all will have no effectโ€”all will not effectually reclaim one sinner, nor gain one sincere convert to righteousness!

Paul, Apollos, and Peter, with all their apostolic abilities, can do nothing, without the Holy Spirit.

Paul may plant the seedโ€”and Apollos may water it; but God alone can make it grow! “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anythingโ€”but only God, who makes things grow!” 1 Corinthians 3:6, 7.

Never will peace and harmony be established in this jangling worldโ€”until this Divine Agent takes the work in hand.

It is He aloneโ€”who can melt down the obstinate hearts of men into love and peace!

It is He aloneโ€”who can soften their rugged and savage tempers, and transform them into mutual benevolence!

It is He aloneโ€”who can quench those lusts that set the world on fire, and implant the opposite virtues and graces. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, are mentioned by Paul, as the fruit of the Spirit, because the Spirit alone is the author of them. And if these dispositions were predominant in the worldโ€”what a serene, calm, peaceful region would it be, undisturbed with the hurricanes of human passions!

Oh, how much do we need the influence of the blessed Spirit . . .

to break the heart of stone,
to enlighten the dark mind, and
to comfort the desponding soul!
