O for a spirit of habitual prayer!

O for a spirit of habitual prayer!

(James Smith, “The Evening Sacrifice; Or, A Help to Devotion” 1859)

“But I call to God, and the LORD saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress–and He hears my voice!” Psalm 55:16-17

The well taught Christian carries everything to God–and in so doing, obtains relief, enjoys peace, and grows in grace.
For all that we need–we should call upon God.
And from all that we fear–we should flee unto God.

At the close of every day, it is our mercy to call upon the Lord.
We must make confession of sin–and obtain pardon.
We must carry to Him our burdens–and obtain relief.
We must tell out before Him our needs–and obtain a supply.

Oh, how precious it is to go to the Lord at the close of each day, and tell Him all that has . . .
  vexed us,
  grieved us,
  cast us down, or
  disquieted our spirits!

And how blessed to go to him each morning, and seek grace to live holily and happily through the day!

Nor is it less blessed to have a few minutes with God at noon–breaking, as it were, the day in two, and keeping short accounts with God.

O for a spirit of habitual prayer
, that at evening, and at morning, and at noon–we may pray, and cry aloud to God!

If we were more with the Lord in prayer, we would have . . .
more strength to carry our crosses,
more patience to bear our troubles,
and more comfort amidst life’s sorrows.

Holy Spirit, take up your residence in my heart as a Spirit of prayer, and lead me daily, hourly, yes, very often–to the mercy-seat. Let me find the hours of prayer to be precious seasons. And especially at eventide, when worn and exhausted with the toils and troubles of the day–let me find sweet solace and refreshment in pouring out my soul unto God.

Precious Lord Jesus, draw our souls to You evening by evening, and lead us into the presence of Your Father, that we may have sweet and hallowed fellowship with God! Let our devotions ascend as sweet incense to God.

We have need to use this prayer at all times!

We have need to use this prayer at all times!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“Do not forsake me, O Lord!
O my God, do not be far from me!” Psalm 38:21

We frequently pray that God would not forsake us in the hour of trial and temptation–but we often forget that we have need to use this prayer at all times! There is no moment of our life, however holy, in which we can do without His constant upholding. Whether in light or in darkness, in communion or in temptation–we alike need the prayer: “Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, do not be far from me!”

We cannot do without continued aid from above. Let this be then, your daily prayer:

“Father! Do not forsake Your helpless child, lest I fall by the hand of the enemy.

Shepherd! Do not forsake Your wayward lamb, lest I wander from the safety of the fold.

Great Gardener! Do not forsake Your frail plant, lest I wither and die.

Do not forsake me in my joys–lest they absorb my heart.

Do not forsake me in my sorrows–lest I murmur against You.

Do not forsake me–for without You I am as weak as water.

Do not forsake me–for my path is dangerous and full of snares, and I cannot do without Your guidance.

Do not be far from me, O Lord–for trouble is near, and no other can help me.

Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, do not be far from me!

Do not leave me or forsake me, O God my Savior–at any moment of my life!”

“Hold me up, and I shall be safe!” Psalm 119:117

My coward heart!

My coward heart!

(A.W. Tozer)

Father, I want to know You–but my coward heart fears to give up its toys. I cannot part with them without inward bleeding, and I do not try to hide from You the terror of the parting. I come trembling, but I do come. Please root from my heart all those things which I have cherished so long and which have become a very part of my self–so that You may reign there without a rival. Deliver me from the tyranny of things–and from the idols of my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Friendly Futilities

Prayer Logo

Father, I don’t want to be conformed to the futile and dissolute thinking of the world. Renew my mind, help me to stop polluting it with the things the world wants me to see and hear. Transform me according to what is true about my true identity and my new self. Amen.

We Are Loved As We Are

Risen God, we come to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, yet we do not share the love that Christ offers. Forgive us when we forget his gift of sacrificial love.

Risen God, sometimes we look and do not recognise you because we have already decided what you will look like. Forgive us when we do not see you in people we meet.

Risen God, sometimes we would rather not hear the weeping of others because we cannot cope with what it will mean to care for them. Forgive us when we are deaf to the cries of the world.

Risen God, sometimes we choose to stay at the tomb rather than join the women in rushing to spread the Good News. Forgive us when we chose to mourn instead of live.

The grace of God is for us through Christ’s death and Resurrection.

We are loved as we are, not as we believe we should be.

We are given forgiveness as a gift beyond anything we have deserved or earned.

We lift up our hearts and receive our freedom, Amen.

Drag Me Out Of My Comfort Zone

Demanding Lord,
I am afraid of the duties that seem unavoidable,
I am afraid of a calling that seems beyond my grasp.
I am afraid of risk, I am afraid of responsibility,
I am afraid that I don’t have either the ability or the stamina for the job.
Even so Lord, I give you permission to drag me out of my comfort zone.
I sign myself up to do both what I ought and what you want.
I might need a bit of help Lord- you know that.
And so I trust you to supply it,
Both divine strengthening inside and human companionship alongside.
I trust it to turn up when I need it.
I trust you as a God of both challenge and comfort.
Amen.

Our Greatest Need

If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent a financier; if pleasure, an entertainer. As it is forgiveness, He sent a Saviour. – Nicky Gumbel

Prayer 4 2day wireless logo

Father in heaven, I know that I have broken your laws and that my sins have separated me from you. I now want to turn away from my past sinful life.

Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again.
I believe that you sent your son Jesus Christ, who died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, and is now alive. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life—to rule and reign in my heart from this dayforward.

Please send me your Holy Spirit to help me to obey you, and
to do your will for the rest of my life.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
