“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.ย In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6ย 

We all needย directionย in our life paths.ย 

We turn to our friends for counsel, but human wisdom is inadequate. It is short-sighted and cannot certainly know what is best. It is ignorant and may mislead unwittingly. Wrong advice, though meant for good, has wrecked many a life destiny! Human guidance is not enough; we need something truer, wiser, safer–something infallible; and that is just what we have assured to us in thisย promise of divine direction.

But there is aย condition–we must acknowledge the Lord inย allย our ways. The “all” is emphatic. Most of us acknowledge the Lord inย someย of our ways. We turn to Him in the time of great trials, or in great and sore dangers. Even scoffers and atheists have been known, in the moment of peril, as in a storm at sea–to fall upon their knees and call upon God for help. The worst people, when alarming sickness is on them, or when death stares them in the face, want to take hold of the hand of God. There are none of us who do not at certain times crave divine direction and help.ย 

But the promise reads, “Inย allย your ways”–that isย theย conditionย of the promised direction.

We are very willing to acknowledge God while He directs us in the paths in whichย weย are inclined to go–paths that are pleasant and agreeable toย us. We can easily submit to the sweet will of God, when it is indeed sweet to our natural taste. But how is it when God directs us to go the way we do not want to go–to do the thing that is unpleasant, and will cause pain, or require sacrifice or loss?ย 

How is it when the voice of God, answering to our request . . .
ย ย  bids us to take the path which leads to aย cross;
ย ย  bids us to turn away from the pleasant thing that we crave;
ย ย  bids us to give up the dear friendship, which is drawing us away from Him;ย 
ย ย  bids us give into His hand, the child or loved one we so desire to keep with us?

“In all your ways” means the hard ways–as well as the easy ways; the thorny path–as wall as the path of flowers. Yet we are continually coming to points at which we hesitate. We say: “In allย but this, dear Lord–I can take Your way and do Your will.” Still the answer comes, “In allย My ways, My child.”ย 

There must be no reserve, no withholding, no exception.ย 

Theย beloved sinย must be given up–though it seems only a little one, though giving it up is like cutting off a right hand or plucking out a right eye.ย 

Theย hard pathย must be taken–though it leads among thorns that pierce the feet, over the sharp stones, and through fire and flood.ย 

Theย painful dutyย must be done–though it costs us popularity, ease, or position; though it leads to poverty, suffering, or homelessness.ย 

Theย bitter griefย must be accepted–though it seems to take all, and leave nothing.
It must be accepted sweetly, lovingly, cheerfully, with unquestioning surrender.ย 

The lesson is plain. Nothing must be withheld from God–whether it be in obedience, or in submission.ย 

Theย darling sinย must be given up.ย 

Theย rough pathย must be walked over.ย 

Thatย hard dutyย must be accepted.ย 

We must acknowledge the Lord in all our ways, if we would have Him direct our paths.

Jesus could accomplish man’s redemption in no other way than by crucifixion. He must die–and die the death of the cruel cross.ย 

What light and glory beam aroundย the cross!

Of what prodigies of grace, is it the instrument,ย 
of what glorious truths, is it the symbol,ย 
of what mighty transforming power, is it the source!ย 

Around the cross gathers all the light of the Old Testament economy:ย 
ย  it explains everyย symbol,ย 
ย  it substantiates everyย shadow,ย 
ย  it solves everyย mystery,ย 
ย  it fulfills everyย type,ย 
ย  it confirms everyย prophecy,ย 
of that dispensation which had eternally remained unmeaning and inexplicable, but for the death of the Son of God upon the cross.ย 

Not theย pastย only–but allย futureย splendor gathers around the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It assures us of the ultimate reign of the Savior, and tells of the reward which shall spring from His sufferings. And while its one arm points to the divine counsels of eternity past–with the other it points to the future triumph and glory of Christ’s kingdom in the eternity to come! Such is the lowly yet sublime, the weak yet mighty instrument, by which the sinner is saved and God eternally glorified.ย 

The cross of Christ is . . .
ย  the grand consummation of all preceding dispensations of God to men;
ย  the meritorious procuring cause of all spiritual blessings to our fallen race;
ย  the scene of Christ’s splendid victories over all His enemies and ours;
ย  the most powerful incentive to all evangelical holiness;
ย  the instrument which is to subjugate the world to the supremacy of Jesus;
ย  the source of all true peace, joy and hope;
ย  the tree beneath whose shadow all sin expires, all grace lives.ย 

The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!ย 
What a holy thrill these words produce in the heart of those who love the Savior!ย 
How significant is their meaning, how precious is their influence!ย 

Marvelous and irresistible, is the power of the cross! The cross of Christ has . . .
ย  subdued many a rebellious will;ย 
ย  broken many a marble heart;ย 
ย  laid low many a vaunting foe;ย 
ย  overcome and triumphed, when all other instruments have failed;ย 
ย  transformed the lion like heart of man, into the lamb like heart of Christ!ย 

When lifted up in its own bare simplicity and inimitable grandeur–the cross of Christ has won and attracted millions to its faith, admiration, and love!ย 

What a marvelous power does this cross of Jesus possess! It changes the Christian’s entire judgment of the world.ย Looking at the world through the cross–his opinion is totally revolutionized.ย 
He sees the world as it really is–a sinful, empty, vain thing.ย 
He learns its iniquity, in that it crucified the Lord of life and glory.ย 
His expectations from the world, and his love to the world, are transformed.ย 
He has found another object of love–the Savior whom the world cast out and slew.ย 
His love to the world is destroyed by that power which alone could destroy it–the crucifying power of the cross.ย 

It is the cross which eclipses, in the view of the true believer, the glory and attraction of every other object.ย 

What is the weapon by which faith combats with, and overcomes the world? What but the cross of Jesus!ย 

Just as the natural eye, gazing for a while upon the sun, is blinded for the moment to all other objects by its overpowering effulgence; so to the believer, concentrating his mind upon the glory of the crucified Savior, studying closely the wonders ofย graceandย loveย andย truthย meeting in the cross–the world with all its attraction fades into the full darkness of an eclipse.ย 

Christ and His cross infinitely better than the world and its trinkets!ย

Dear friend,
May Jesus be yours–all that Heย is, and all that Heย has. Then you will be as rich as an archangel!

May He captivate you more with His infinite beauty and enable you to live more blessedly upon His infinite fullness, that He may keep His royal court in your soul!

The more you are acquainted with Him, the more you will grow in love to Him; for He is altogether lovely,ย an immense ocean of everlasting love!ย The loveliness of the whole world is but a drop compared to His immeasurable love. What must Heaven be, where His love is to be fully manifested and enjoyed forever! There we shall see Him! Oh, for that day!ย 

But even along our pilgrim way, He walks with us and makes our hearts burn within us. Theseย sweet foretastes of His loveย draw us on and whet our appetite for Heaven. A few more of these foretastes, and we shall get to theย fountainheadย and drinkย riversย of pleasure forevermore!ย

I received your letter, and think you overlook our ever adorable Jesus, in setting any value upon a poor, dirty worm such as myself.ย 

If His grace raised this poor, dirty worm from a dunghill and set it upon a throne with His princes,ย who shall have the glory–the worm or Jesus?ย Shall any of His due praise be given to the worm? God forbid!

As vile and base as I am–yet He lets me approach Him and converse with Him freely.ย 

He condescends to admit me into fellowship with Him; and He opens His treasures and says, “All these are yours. I bought them for you with the price of My blood, but I give them to you as a free gift!”ย

“If anyone does not love the Lord–a curse be on him!”ย 1 Corinthians 16:22

If you truly love the Lord Jesus Christ–then you earnestly study and endeavor to please Him byย a life of universal obedience. Love is alwaysย desirousย to please the person beloved; and it will naturally lead to aย conductย that is pleasing. This, then, you may be sure of, that if you truly love Jesus–then it is the labor of your life to please Him.

The only way toย pleaseย Jesus, and the bestย testย of your love to Him–isย obedienceย to His commandments. This is madeย the decisive markย by Christ Himself: “If anyoneย lovesย Me–he willย obeyย My teaching. He who does not love Me–will notย obeyย My teaching.” John 14:23, 24

Jesus repeats thisย themeย over and over in different forms: “Whoever has My commands andย obeysย them–he is the one whoย lovesMe,” verse 21. “If youย loveย Me–you willย obeyย what I command,” verse 15. “You are My friends–if youย doย what I command.” John 15:14. “This is love for God,” says John; that is, it is the surestย evidence, and the natural, inseparableย effectย of our love to God, “that weย obeyย His commands. And His commands are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3; that is, they will not seem grievous to one who obeys them from the principle of sincere love.

Here, then, you whoย professย to love the Lord Jesus–here isย an infallible testย for your love! Do you make it the great aim of your life to keep His commandments? Do you honestly endeavor to perform everyย dutyย which He has required–and that because He has commanded it? And do you vigorously resist and struggle against everyย sin, however constitutional, however fashionable, however gainful–because He forbids it? And is the way of obedienceย pleasantย to you? Would you choose this holy way to Heaven, rather than any other–if it were left to your choice?

Yourย notย lovingย God–if it continues, will certainly lead you to Hell.ย You are fit for no other place!ย Where should theย enemiesย of God be–but in an infernal prison? There is the same propriety in throwing you into Hell–as in shutting up madmen in bedlam, or rebels in a dungeon! Why, you are devilized already!ย You have the very temperament of devils!ย Enmity to Godย is the grand constituent of a devil–it is the worst ingredient in that infernal disposition; and this you have in your hearts, and, as it were, incorporated with your habitual temperament! And what do you think will become of you? Judge for yourselves–must you not be doomed to that everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels–whom you resemble?

If a man trusts to his own righteousness, he rejects Christ’s righteousness.ย

I know no trueย religionย but Christianity.

I know no trueย Christianityย but the doctrine of Christ:
ย  of His divine person,
ย  of His divine offices,
ย  of His divine righteousness,ย

I know no trueย ministersย of Christ, but such as make it their business to commend Jesus Christ in His saving fullness of grace and glory, to the faith and love of men.

What powerful attractions the present world has! How prone we are . . .
ย  to sink down to its level,
ย  to become attached to its customs,
ย  and to cleave to its vanities!ย 
Yet, at the best, it is but dust. There is nothing in the world to satisfy or suit an immortal mind.ย 

Jesus died for us–to deliver us from this present evil world. The Holy Spirit urges us to rise above it, and offers us His divine and all-sufficient aid. He will not force, but only attract or draw. Alas! that we should . . .ย 
ย  slight His intimations,
ย  disregard His exhortations,
ย  and grieve His loving heart!

We are not of the world–and yet how worldly we are!ย We are born from above–but yet how earthly we remain! Our souls go out after things that are carnal, drossy, dusty, contemptible–to the neglect of things that are spiritual, pure, holy, and invaluable.ย 

Heavenly Father, we confess our folly, we deplore our ingratitude, we condemn our conduct. We feel weak and feeble when we attempt to burst our bonds, and mount upwards to Your throne. O quicken, quicken us! By the power of Your Holy Spirit, and by bringing home Your inspired Word–quicken our poor, cold, lifeless souls!ย 

Have You not promised to be as theย dewย unto Your people, coming down graciously, gradually, and gently upon them–in order to revive their graces, quicken their devotions, and cause them to grow up into Christ? O come down upon our dry and thirsty souls as the dew–or fall like rain on tender grass, like gentle showers on young plants.

Quicken us–and so will we mount up to Your throne, and do Your righteous will. Quicken us–and so Jesus will be precious to us, and the work of the Lord will be pleasant to us.

It concerns us all to seriously reflect upon our own sins and the sins of our land, which have brought theseย calamitiesย upon us.

We and our countrymen are sinners, aggravated sinners! God proclaims that we are such:
ย  by His judgments now upon us,
ย  by withering fields and scanty harvests,
ย  by the sound of the trumpet and the alarm of war!ย 

O my country, is not your wickedness great, and your iniquities infinite?ย Where is there a moreย sinful spotย to be found upon our guilty globe?ย Pass over the land, take a survey of the inhabitants, inspect into their conduct–andย what do you see? What do you hear?ย 

You see theย gigantic forms of viceย bidding defiance to the God of Heaven–while true religion and virtue are forced to retire to avoid public contempt and insult!ย 

You seeย herds of drunkardsย swilling down their cups, and drowning all morality within them!ย 

You hear theย swearerย venting his fury against God–trifling with that Name which prostrate angels adore, and imprecating that damnation, under which the hardiest devil in Hell trembles and groans!

You seeย avariceย hoarding up her useless treasures,ย 
dishonest craft
ย planning her schemes of unlawful gain,ย 
andย oppressionย unmercifully grinding the face of the poor!ย 

You seeย prodigalityย squandering her stores!ย 

You seeย luxuryย spreading her table!ย 

You seeย vanityย laughing aloud and dissolving in empty, unthinking mirth–regardless of God, of time and eternity!ย 

You seeย sensualityย wallowing in carnal pleasures, and aspiring, with perverted ambition–to sink as low as her four-footed brethren in the stalls!

You seeย cardsย more in use than the Bible;ย 
theย backgammon tableย more frequented than the table of the Lord;ย 
novelsย 
andย romancesย more read–than the history of the blessed Jesus!ย 

You seeย trifling,ย and evenย evilย diversions and amusements, become a gigantic business!ย 
The outcome of a horse-race is more anxiously attended to–than the concerns of eternity!ย 

And where theseย grosser forms of viceย do not shock your senses–you often meet with the appearances ofย aย more refined impiety, which is equally dangerous!

You hear theย conversationย of reasonable creatures, of candidates for eternity–engrossed by trifles, or vainly wasted on the affairs of time! These are theirย important subjectsย of conversation, even at the threshold of the house of God!

You see swarms of prayerless families all over our land! You see ignorant, wicked children, unrestrained and untaught by those to whom God and nature have entrusted their souls!ย 

You see the holy religion of Jesus–abused, neglected, disobeyed, and dishonored by its professors!ย 

You see crowds ofย professed believers, who are in reality,ย practical atheists!ย 
Theseย nominal Christiansย are reallyย unholy heathens!ย 
They areย abandoned slaves of sin–who yet pretend to be the servants of the holy Jesus!

You see multitudesย lying in a deep sleep in sinย all around us! You see them eager in the pursuits of the vanities of time–but stupidly unconcerned about the important realities of the eternal world just before them! So few are concerned what shall become of them–when all their connections with earth and flesh must be broken, and they must take their flight into strange, unknown regions! So few lamenting their sins! So few crying for mercy and a new heart! So few flying to Jesus!ย

“When He comes–He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment!” John 16:8

The Holy Spirit isย the only effectual reformer of the world!ย If He is absent–
ย ย legislatorsย may make laws against crime;ย 
ย ย philosophersย may reason against vice;ย 
ย ย ministersย may preach against sin;ย 
ย ย conscienceย may remonstrate against evil;
ย  theย divine lawย may prescribe, and threaten Hell;ย 
ย  theย gospelย may invite, and allure to Heaven;ย 
but all will be in vain!

The strongest arguments, the most melting entreaties, the most alarming denunciations from God and man, enforced with the highest authority, or the most compassionate tears–all will have no effect–all will not effectually reclaim one sinner, nor gain one sincere convert to righteousness!ย 

Paul, Apollos, and Peter, with all their apostolic abilities, can do nothing, without the Holy Spirit. Paul may plant the seed–and Apollos may water it; but God alone can make it grow! “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything–but only God, who makes things grow!” 1 Corinthians 3:6, 7

Never will peace and harmony be established in thisย jangling world–until thisย Divine Agentย takes the work in hand.

It is He alone, who can melt down the obstinate hearts of men into love and peace!ย 

It is He alone, who can soften their rugged and savage tempers, and transform them into mutual benevolence!ย 

It is He alone–who can quench those lusts that set the world on fire, and implant the opposite virtues and graces. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, are mentioned by Paul, as theย fruit of the Spirit, because the Spirit alone is the author of them. And if these dispositions were predominant in the world–what a serene, calm, peaceful region would it be,ย undisturbed with the hurricanes of human passions!

Oh, how much do we need the influence of the blessed Spirit . . .
ย  to break the heart of stone,
ย  to enlighten the dark mind, and
ย  to comfort the desponding soul!

Viewing man as a fallen, sinful creature–the gospel isย theย onlyย system adapted to his case!ย ย 
The more he contemplates it, the more he perceives its precious adaptation to his dreadful state.ย 
The gospel is . . .
ย  light, for the darkness of his reason;ย 
ย  peace, for the tumult of his conscience;ย 
ย  joy, for the anguish of his mind;ย 
ย  hope, for the gloom of his despair.ย 

Is he guilty? The gospel presents . . .
ย  an all-sufficient Savior,
ย  an all-atoning sacrifice,
ย  and an all-forgiving God.ย 

Is he impure? The gospel opens up for him a fountain for sin and for uncleanness–a hallowed flood supplied from the Redeemer’s cross, where the vilest sinner may wash from his heinous pollution.ย 

Is he alienated from God–at an infinite distance from the only source of happiness and forgiveness? The gospel is a medium of approach, a way of access to the thrice holy God. Here the Alpine mountains of his guilt are leveled to the dust. Here the prodigal returns, is freely received, fully forgiven, elevated to a place in his heavenly Father’s family, and never lost from his heavenly Father’s heart.ย 

Is he the victim of ignorance and error? Here he receives the lessons of a heavenly prophet–theย Spiritย of God becomes his kind instructor. Here the untutored savage is made wiser than the learned sage, “wise unto salvation!”

Does he feel himself the subject of passions that lead him continually astray from God?ย 
The same Spirit becomes the inhabitant of his bosom . . .
ย  to subdue his passions,ย 
ย  to curb his lusts,ย 
ย  to control his will, andย 
ย  to sanctify the nature He has first renewed, and which shall finally be glorified with Christ.ย 

In every point of view, the gospel meets his case!

Is he a sinner? The gospel offers pardon!

Is he a debtor? The gospel grants him full payment of his dept!ย 

Is he a captive to sin and Satan? The gospel gives him liberty.ย 

Is he fallen into utter depravity? It elevates him to God’s throne, and constitutes him “a king and a priest unto God.”ย 

Is he thirsty? The gospel is a river of life.ย 

Is he weary? It is a sweet repose.ย 

Is he ignorant? The gospel is a divine instructor.ย 

Is he spiritually diseased? It is immortal health and vigor to his soul.ย 

Is he dying? The gospel is eternal life.ย 

Yes, in the gospel . . .
ย  the law is fulfilled,
ย  justice is atoned, and
ย  the divine perfections are harmonized in man’s redemption.

My heart feels for you, my dear friend, in your deep, deep trial. This present world is a world of sadness; but when we think of that glorious world which is to come, into which sorrow never enters, and how soon we may be there–we may well “rejoice in tribulation.” Our “light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory!”ย 

In all your sorrows, pour out your heart to the Man of sorrows. He will bow down His ear and listen to all that you say. He will eitherย removeย orย moderateย your trial, or give youย strengthย to bear it. Even this bitter draught He has given you to drink shall result both in your good and His glory.ย 

Remember, not a sparrow falls upon the ground without His guidance, and that the very hairs of your head are all numbered. How much more hasย this trying event been ordered and arranged by Him who loves you!ย Infinite wisdom has appointed the whole!ย Never doubt that He loves you, when He most deeply afflicts.ย 

May He lift up upon you the light of His countenance, drawing you nearer to Himself, that you may see what a tender, loving heart He has for you, andย how deeply and tenderly and considerately He cares for you–as if there were not another poor sorrowful one to care for on the face of the whole earth!

Yes, pray against the spirit of worldly, sinful conformity in everything!ย 

Reader! are you a professing Christian? Then guard againstย a worldly Christianity–a Christianity that wears a fair exterior, so far as it is composed of church attendance; but which excludes from it the cross of the meek and lowly Lamb of God–a Christianity which loves the world and the things of the world, “makes a fair show in the flesh,” speaks well of Christ–and yet betrays Him with a kiss.ย 

Oh, awful state! Oh, fearful deception! Oh, fatal delusion!ย 

The world is the sworn enemy of your Savior; let it not be your friend. No, come out of it and be separate!

“The wicked is driven away in his wickedness.”
That is, the wicked manย dies–just as heย lived.
Heย livedย in wickedness, and in wickedness heย dies.ย 

His wickednessย sticks fastย upon him–when his earthly enjoyments, his friends, and all created comforts leave him forever.

Theย guiltย of his wickedness lies heavy upon him–like a mountain of lead, ready to sink him into the depths of eternal misery!

And theย principlesย of wickedness, which he indulged all his life, still live within him, even after the agonies of death; nay, they now arrive at a dreadful immortality, and produceย an eternal Hell in his heart!

He leaves behind him not only all hisย earthly comforts–but all theย little remains of goodnessย which he seemed to have, while under the restraints of divine grace; and he carries nothing but his wickedness along with him into eternity! With this dreadful attendant–his wickedness–he must stand before the tribunal of his holy Judge! To leave hisย earthly allย behind him, and die in the agonies of dissolving nature–this is terrible. But toย die in his wickedness–this is infinitely the most terrible of all!

He onceย flatteredย himself that though heย livedย in wickedness–that he would notย dieย in it. He adopted manyย resolutionsย to amend, and forsake his wickedness toward the close of life, or upon a death-bed. But Oh! how sorely is he disappointed! After all his promising purposes and hopes, heย diedย as heย lived–in wickedness!

This is generally the fate ofย veterans in sin. They are resolving and re-resolving to reform all their lives; but after all, theyย dieย the same as theyย lived. Theyย intendย to prepare for death and eternity, but just notย today. They have always something else to do today; and therefore they put off this work untilย tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, and instead of reforming, theyย dieย in their wickedness.ย Tomorrowย comes, and they are in Hell!

He isย drivenย away, in spite of all his reluctance.ย 
Let him cling to life ever so strongly, yetย he must go!ย 
All his struggles are vain, and cannot add one moment to his life.

Indeed, the wicked have so little taste for Heaven, and are so much in love with this world–that if they leave it at all, they must beย drivenย out of it–drivenย out of it, whether they want or not!

When they hope for Heaven, they do in reality consider it but a shift, or a refuge, when they can no longer live in this, their favorite world. They do not at all desire Heaven–in comparison with this world. They would live forever in this present world, if they could have their choice. But let them grasp ever so hard, they must let go their hold. They must beย drivenย away, like chaff before a whirlwind–driven away into the regions ofย misery. Into the regions of misery, I say; for certainly the happiness of Heaven was never intended for such as are so averse to it; and who prefer this wretched world, with all its cares and sorrows–before Heaven itself!

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?

That God reigns supreme inย Heaven, is generally conceded; but that He reigns supreme over this earth, is almost universally denied–if not directly, then indirectly. More and more men are relegating God to the background in their philosophizing and theorizing.ย 

Take theย materialย realm. Not only is it denied that Godย createdย everything, by personal and direct action–but few believe that He has any immediate concern in regulating the works of His own hands. Everything is supposed to be ordered according to the (impersonal and abstract) “laws of Nature”. Thus is the Creator banished from His own creation! Therefore we need not be surprised that men, in their degrading conceptions, exclude Him from the realm ofย human affairs.ย 

Throughout Christendom, with an almost negligible exception, the theory is held thatย manย is “a free agent”, and therefore, man is the master of his fortunes and the determiner of his destiny.ย 

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?ย 


What do the Scriptures say? If we believe their plain and positive declarations, no room is left for uncertainty. They affirm, again and again . . .
ย  that God is on theย throneย of His universe;
ย  that theย scepterย is in His hands;
ย  that He is directing all things “after the counsel of His own will”. Ephesians 1:11

The Scriptures affirm, not only that Godย createdย all things, but also that God isย rulingย andย reigningย over all the works of His hands. They affirm . . .
ย  that God is the Almighty,
ย  that His will is irreversible,
ย  that He isย absolute sovereignย in every realm of all His vast dominions.ย 

And surely it must be so. Only two alternatives are possible:
ย  God must either rule–or be ruled;
ย  God must either sway–or be swayed;
ย  God must either accomplish His own will–or be thwarted by His creatures.ย 

Accepting the fact that He is the “Most High God”, the only Potentate and King of kings, vested with perfect wisdom and illimitable power–the conclusion is irresistible, that He must be Godย in fact–as well as in name!

It is in view of what we have briefly referred to above, that we say, present-day conditions call loudly for a new examination and new presentation of God’s omnipotence, God’s sufficiency, and God’s sovereignty. From every pulpit in the land it needs to be thundered forth–that God still reigns! What is needed now, as never before, is a full, positive, constructive setting forth of the Godhood of God. Drastic diseases call for drastic remedies. We know of nothing which is more calculated to infuse spiritual vigor into our souls, than a scriptural apprehension of the full character of God!

Theย worldย is a shadow–and is passing away!ย 

Theย creatureย is a shadow–and the loveliest and the fondest may be the first to die!ย 

Healthย is a shadow–fading, and in a moment gone!

Wealthย is a shadow–today upon the summit of affluence, tomorrow at its base, plunged into poverty and dependence!

Human friendshipsย andย creature affectionsย are but shadows–sweet and pleasant while they last; but, with a worm feeding at the root of all created good, the sheltering gourd soon withers, exposing us to the sun’s burning heat by day, and to the frost’s cold chill by night!ย 

Oh, yes!ย “Passing Away!”ย is indelibly inscribed upon everything here below!ย 

Yet how slow we are to realize the solemn lesson: “What shadows we are–and what shadows we pursue!”ย 

Unconverted reader, what is your life–but a vapor that passes away?ย 
And what are your pursuits, but shadows–unreal, unsatisfying, evanescent?ย 

Your rank, your wealth, your honors, your pleasures, are but phantoms which appear but for a little while, and then are lost in the deeper shadow of the grave, and the still deeper and longer shadow of eternity!ย 

Oh, turn from these dreams and hallucinations, and, as a rational, accountable, immortal being, on your way to judgment–fix your mind upon your solemn, endless future! You are going to die! And, oh, when that dread hour comes, so real and appalling–how then will your past trifling life appear?

The Christian’s life is very much made up ofย caresย andย comforts.
Cares spring from earth–comfort comes from Heaven.
Cares prove him a sinner–holy comforts prove him a saint.
Cares flow in from a variety of quarters–true comfort from only one quarter.
Cares come naturally–but comforts come supernaturally.ย 

Cares must be cast on our God–or they will prove a burden too heavy for us. They will depress us, bewilder us, and make us wretched. But here is our comfort–we have always ONE to care for us, and the very One which of all others we would wish to do so, “Theย Lordย cares for you!”

God cares for whom?ย 
For you, who are born again by the Spirit.ย 
For you, who are strangers and pilgrims on the earth.ย 
For you, who are placed in humble circumstances, being numbered with the poor of this world.ย 
For you, who are compassed about with so many cares, and who enjoy so few comforts.
For you, who are surprised at your many fiery trials, as though some strange thing had happened unto you.
For you, who are worried and harassed by Satan, who, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour.ย 
For you, who are persecuted by the world, and hated by men for your Savior’s sake.ย 
For you, to whom Christ is precious–as He is to every one who truly believes in Him.ย 

God’s care extends toย every Christianย . . .
ย  the young and the aged,
ย  the weak and the strong,
ย  the poor and the wealthy,
ย  the doubting and the confident.ย 
Believer, He cares for you!

Who is it that cares for us?
It isย the Lord, the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy;
who is soย great–that we have no adequate conception of His greatness;
who is soย good–that it is impossible fully to set forth His goodness;
who is soย glorious–that no sinner can see His face and live.ย 
It is He . . .
ย ย  whoย createdย all things with His word,
ย ย  whoย governsย all by His wisdom,ย 
ย ย  andย upholdsย all by His power.ย 
His resources are infinite,ย 
His compassion is exquisite, andย 
His patience is astonishingly great.ย 
He enters into all the circumstances of His redeemed people, is ever present with them, and rejoices over them to do them good.ย 

The angels obey Him,ย 
the seraphim adore Him,ย 
and all creation glorifies Him!ย 

But though He is so exalted, so holy, and so unspeakably great . . .
ย  He cares for you–as vile as you are.
ย  He cares for you–as sinful as you are.
ย  He cares for you–as depressed and discouraged as you are.ย 
He cares for you. He cares for youย individually, and according to the circumstances in which you are placed.

What does He do?ย 
Heย caresย for you!
Heย thinksย of you!
Heย watchesย over you!
Heย sympathizesย with you!
He feels the deepest interest in you!
He ever seeks your welfare!
He infallibly secures your good!

Yourย miseryย touches His heart,
yourย needsย lie open to His view,
and yourย criesย enter into His ears!

He cares for you more than for the proudest monarch on his throne!ย 

He cares for you–and His care is CONSTANT!ย 
It is not fitful or occasional–but ever the same.ย 

He cares for you–and His care is PATERNAL!ย 
It is the care of a father for his child–the child whom he tenderly loves, and for whose welfare he feels the deepest concern.ย 

He cares for you, and His care is PERPETUAL!ย 
He will never care for you less than He does at present.ย 
When old age weakens you,ย 
when poverty pinches you,ย 
when death appears just before you–
He will care for you as much as He does at this moment.ย 

He cares for you–and His care is BENEFICIAL!ย 
It prevents innumerable evils–and secures the greatest possible amount of good. His care is more advantageous than the care of the kindest father, though that father were monarch of the mightiest empire, and possessed unbounded wealth. The care of God is of more value than the care of all His creatures combined.ย 

He cares for you–but His care is MYSTERIOUSLY EXERCISED!ย 
It benefits us certainly–but secretly. It conceals itself behind the blessings it brings, and the evils it prevents.ย 

He cares for you–and His care is SPECIAL!ย 
It is not the care which He has for the beasts which perish, or the unbelieving sinners who die under His frown.ย 

He cares for you–and His care is PARTICULAR.ย 
It is care which extends to the very hairs of your heads, which, are all numbered–and to all the events and occurrences of your life, however minute or commonplace!

Beloved, here is our comfort. We may lose the care of an earthly relative or dear friend by death–but the Lord ever lives; and while He lives, He . . .
ย  ever loves us,
ย  thoroughly knows us, and
ย  never ceases to care for us!

Here is the ground of our confidence for the future. We know notย whereย we shall be, norย whatย we shall be–for we know not what a day may bring forth. But this we know, that God will care for us, and, caring for us–He will fulfill His precious promises to us.ย 

If God cares for us, then . . .
ย ย  let us cast all our cares upon Him;ย 
ย ย  let us live in daily fellowship with Him;ย 
ย ย  let us seek all our supplies from Him.ย 

If God cares for us, then let us not dishonor Him by nursing our doubts, or encouraging our fears–but let us trust in Him at all times, for . . .
ย  His love isย true,ย 
ย  His care isย constant, andย 
ย  His knowledge isย perfect.ย 

We shall never be without aย divineย friend–however trying our circumstances may be. We shall never be without aย divineย guide–however perplexing or difficult our path may be. The care of God is more than the care of all the angelic hosts. If the care of God is not sufficient to preserve, supply, and satisfy us–then nothing is.

May the Lord help me to believe this precious truth, to realize it daily, and to pass through the present world under the impression, “I am the object of God’s tender, paternal, and ceaseless care!

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous fall!” Psalm 55:22

If God is my portion, then I ought to beย contentย without any other portion. He is . . .
ย  enough in poverty,
ย  enough in persecution,
ย  enough in life,
ย  enough in death,
ย  enough for evermore!

If God gives me Himself–then it is more than as if He had given me the whole world, or ten thousand worlds like this! O how happy was the apostle Paul, who knowing God to be his portion could say, “I have learned to beย contentย whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learnedย the secret of being contentย in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in need!” Philippians 4:11-12

If God is my portion, I ought to beย thankful. It is enough. There is no losing it. What dignity, what honor is conferred onย the man who has God for his portion!ย I deserved to be stripped of everything, and to be turned out of God’s presence eternally penniless, wretched, and miserable. But instead of this, God in His free grace, in His infinite mercy–gives me . . .
ย  a heavenly mansion,
ย  a glorious city,
ย  an eternal kingdom,
ย  more, He gives me Himself!ย 
God in all His glory, in all His grace–is mine!

If God is my portion, then I ought to beย living upon Him. If I live upon anything outside of God–then I live upon what is finite, and will change. But if I live upon God, I live upon the infinite, and upon what is unchangeable. As a believer, I should live befitting the dignity of my lofty character, position, and prospects. The man of fortune ought not to live like the pauper. Just so, the Christian ought to live above other men.ย 

If God is my portion, I ought to be making aย proper useย of it. I should set my portion over and against . . .
ย  all my pains and privations,
ย  all my griefs and grievances,ย 
ย  all my sadnesses and sorrows.ย 

I should lookย aboveย all my trials and troubles–and rejoice that throughout eternity, I shall have . . .
ย  eternal ease–instead of pain,
ย  eternal plenty–instead of privation,
ย  eternal joy–instead of grief,
ย  eternal gladness–instead of sadness,
ย  and eternal bliss–instead of sorrow!

Beloved, is the Lord your portion? Are youย livingย upon Him as such?

But if God is not your portion–then what is?ย 
Where are yourย thoughtsย most?ย 
Where do yourย affectionsย center?ย 
After what do youย pursue?ย 
The world?ย It is a poor, fleeting, unsatisfying portion!ย 
It will be found insufficient, unsatisfactory, and perishing!ย 

Unless God is your portion, you will be . . .
ย  unsatisfied in life,
ย  wretched in death, and
ย  indescribably miserable to all eternity!ย flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart andย my portionย forever!” Psalm 73:26

Of everything on earth, it is wise for us to say, “This is not mine to keep!” It is essential to realize that this it is true, for everything here is temporary.

Mind what you are doing–you prosperous people, you who have nice homes, you who are hoarding up money. There is nothing permanent for you here on earth. Your home is in Heaven–your home is not here. If you find your treasure here–your heart will be here also.ย 

You must keep all earthly treasures out of your heart.ย 

Let Christ be your treasure, and let Him have your heart!

Unfortunately,ย the ten-cent-store Jesusย being preached now by many–is not the Jesus that will come to judge the world.

Thisย harmless, plastic, painted Jesusย who has no spine, nor justice, nor wrath–but is a soft and pliant friend to everybody;ย  if He is the only Christ, then we might as well close our Bibles, bar our doors and make a bakery or garage out of our church buildings!

The popular Christ being preached today–is not the Christ of the Bible, nor the Christ who will be our final Judge.ย 

Jesus Christ our Lord, the Judge with the flaming eyes–is the one with whom we must deal. We cannot escape it.

“Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks: Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” Revelation 6:15-17ย

If you don’t teach them to know God, and how to serve Him, and be saved, and to escape the flames of Hell–you teach them nothing, or worse than nothing.ย It is in your hands to do them the greatest kindness or cruelty in all the world!ย Help them to know God and to be saved, and you do more for them than if you helped them to be kings or princes.ย 

If you neglect their souls, and bring them up them in ignorance, worldliness, ungodliness, and sin–youย betray them to the devil,the enemy of their souls, even as truly as if you sold them to him!ย You sell them to be slaves to Satan!ย You betray them to him who will deceive them and abuse them in this life–and torment them in eternity!

If you saw but a burning furnace, much more the flames of Hell–would you not think that man or womanย more fit to be called a devil than a parent, who could find in their hearts to cast their child into it? Whatย monsters then of inhumanityย are you, who read in Scripture what is the way to Hell, and who they are that God will deliver up to Satan, to be tormented by him–and yet will bring up your children in that very way, and will not take pains to save them from it!

If you love them, show it in those things on which their everlasting welfare depends.ย Do not say you love them, and yet lead them unto Hell!ย If you do not love them, yet do not be so unmerciful to them as to damn them! You cannot possibly do more to damn them, than to bring them up in . . .
ย  ignorance,
ย  carelessness,
ย  worldliness,
ย  sensuality and
ย  ungodliness!
There is no other way to Hell. And yet, will you bring them up in such a life–and say that you do not desire to damn them?ย 

But if you train up your children in ungodliness, you may as well say thatย you intend to have them damned!ย And is not the devil more excusable, for dealing thus cruelly to your children–than you who are their parents, who are bound by nature to love them, and prevent their misery?

Let me seriously speak to the hearts of those careless and ungodly parents, who neglect the holy education of their children.ย Oh, do not be so unmerciful to those who you have brought into the world!ย Oh, pity and help the souls that you have defiled and undone! Have mercy on the souls that must perish in Hell, if they are not saved! Oh help them who have . . .
ย  so manyย enemiesย to assault them;
ย  so manyย temptationsย to pass through;
ย  so manyย difficultiesย to overcome;ย 
ย  so severe aย judgmentย to undergo!ย 
Help them who are so weak, and so easily deceived and overthrown!ย 
Help them speedily–before sin hardens them, and Satan makes a stronger fortress in their hearts!

Ever since you rose from your bed this morning–there has been an eye watching you!
ย Whereverย you have been andย whateverย you have been doing–that eye has seen you. It has gone with you to your work. It has seen you with your companions. It has been on you when you were alone.ย 

It has seen not merely all that you have done, butย whyย you did it. Your thoughts, your feelings, your motives, which even your nearest friend has not fully known–have all been open to that eye of which I speak. For it isย an all-seeing eye–the eye of God!

If you have had enough to eat today, if you are clothed comfortably and have a home to live in–it is only because God supplies your needs. You would have nothing–if God did not supply you. You live–only because He gives you life. He could take all your comforts from you–if it pleased Him. He could lay you on a bed of sickness this very day–He could in a moment, strike you dead!

Have you even spoken to Him today? Have you prayed to Him today?

Could there be a sweeter word in any language than that word “forgiveness,” when it sounds in a guilty sinner’s ear!ย 

Can it be possible that sin–such heinous sin asย mine–can be forgiven, forgiven altogether, and forever? Hell is my portion as a sinner–there is no possibility of my escaping from it while sin remains upon me.ย 

Can the unfathomable load of my guilt be removed? Can the crimson stain of my sins be blotted out?ย 
Can the adamantine stones of my prison-house ever be loosed, or the doors be lifted from their hinges?ย 

Jesus tells me that I may yet be forgiven. Forever blessed be the revelation ofย redeeming love, which not only tells me that pardon is possible–but that it isย securedย to all who rest in Jesus. I have believed in the appointed sin-atoning sacrifice, even Jesus crucified, and therefore my sins are at this moment, and forever–forgiven by virtue of His substitutionary sufferings and death! I do not wonder that so many are deceived, when I see the careless way in which they deal with their souls. When men have to do with theirย estates, they are very careful; they pay a lawyer to go back over the title-deeds perhaps for two or three hundred years. Inย tradeย they will hurry hither and thither to attend to their commercial engagements; they would not launch into speculations, nor would they run great risks.ย 

But theย soul, the poor soul–how menย playย with it as a toy, andย despiseย it as if it were worthless! Two or three minutes in the morning when they first roll out of bed; two or three odd minutes in the evening, when they are nearly asleep–the fag-ends of the day given to their souls, and all the best part given to the body!ย 

And then, with what indifference do you lend your ears too often to the preaching of the Word! It is an old song–you have heard it so many times.ย Heaven has become a trifle to you, Hell is almost a jest, eternity an empty notion, and death but a bugbear!

Alas! it is a marvel that there are not more deceived. The wonder is that any find the gate, that any discover eternal life, when we are so, so mad, so foolish, so insane–as to trifle where we ought to be solemnly in earnest; and to play and toy–where the whole heart should be given to a work of such everlasting importance. God help us, since it is so easy to be deceived–to search, and watch, and look, and test, and try, that we be not found castaways at the last!

“The Lord takes pleasure in His people!” Psalm 149:4ย 

How comprehensive is the love of Jesus! There is no part of His people’s interests which He does not consider. There is nothing which concerns their welfare which is not important to Him. Not merely does He think of you, believer, as anย immortalย being–but as aย mortalย being too. Do not deny it or doubt it: “The very hairs of your head are all numbered!” It would be a sad thing for us if His mantle of love did not cover all our concerns–for what harm might be wrought to us if any of our matters did not come under our gracious Lord’s care!ย 

Believer, rest assured that the heart of Jesus cares about your smaller affairs. The breadth of His tender love is such that you may resort to Him in all matters; for as a father pities his children–so does He pity you, His redeemed child. The smallest interests of all His saints–are all borne upon the broad bosom of the Son of God. Oh, what a heart is His, that does not merely comprehend the salvation of His people–but comprehends also, all their diverse and innumerable concerns!ย 

Do you think, O Christian, that you canย measureย the love of Christ? Think of what His love has brought you–justification, adoption, sanctification, eternal life! The riches of His goodness are unsearchable; you shall never be able toย tallyย them–or evenย conceiveย them. Oh, the breadth of the love of Christ!

Shall such a love as this haveย halfย our hearts? Shall it have aย coldย love in return? Shall Jesus’ marvelous loving-kindness and tender care, meet with but faint response and tardy acknowledgment?ย 

O my soul, you are no desolate wanderer–butย a beloved child, watched over, cared for, supplied, and defended by your Lord!

When the Holy Spirit takes of the things of Christ and preaches them to the heart–oh, what a sweet peace follows! For the believer then finds himself saved from all the miseries of sin, and entitled to all the blessings of eternal glory.

Being thus persuaded of his safety by believing in the sin-atoning blood of our Great High Priest, the Holy Spirit then teaches himย how to live upon Christ, and how to make use of Christ’s fullness.ย 

On our learning this lesson depends our comforting walk heavenward. For Christ does not give us a stock of grace and expect us to improve it by being faithful to grace given. No, no, that is not His way. Our souls must depend upon Him, just as our bodies do upon the elements of this world.ย Every moment we must live by faith upon His fullness, and be every moment receiving out of it grace upon grace.ย 

And this is our happiness–to have all in Christ!

A beggar in myself, but rich with unsearchable eternal riches in Him.ย 

Ignorant still in myself, but led and taught by His unerring wisdom.ย 

A sinner still, but saved by His blood and righteousness.ย 

Weak and helpless still, but kept by His Almighty love.

Nothing but sorrow in myself, nothing but joy in Him.ย 

Oh, this is a blessed life!

No tongue can tell what a Heaven it is, thusย to live by faith upon the Son of God.ย Thanks be to Him, that I do know a little of it. Corinthย was one of the most worldly and immoral cities of the east. Here was theย temple of Venus, with its degrading and disgraceful services.

What kind ofย peopleย were they?
“Do you not know that theย wickedย will not inherit the kingdom of God? “Iย meditateย on Your preceptsย and consider Your ways.”ย Psalm 119:15ย 

There are times when solitude is better than society, and silence is wiser than speech. We would be better Christians if we were more alone, waiting upon God, and gathering spiritual strength for labor in His service through meditation on His Word. We ought toย museย upon the things of God, because we thus get the real nutriment for our souls out of them.

Truth is something like the cluster of the vine: if we would have wine from it, we must bruise it–we must press and squeeze it many times. The bruiser’s feet must come down repeatedly upon the grapes, or else the juice will not flow and much of the precious liquid will be wasted.ย 

So we must, by meditation, tread the clusters of truth, if we would get theย wine of consolationย therefrom.

Our bodies are not supported by merely taking food into the mouth, but the process which really supplies the muscles, and the nerves, and the sinews, and the bones–is the process ofย digestion. It is by digestion that the food becomes assimilated with the inner life.ย 

In the same way, our souls are not nourished merely by listening awhile to this, and then to that, and then to the other part of divine truth. Hearing, reading, marking, and learning, all require inward digesting to complete their usefulness–and the inward digesting of the truth lies for the most part inย meditatingย upon it.

Why is it that some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make but slow advances in the divine life?ย 
Because they neglect their closets, and do not thoughtfully meditate on God’s Word.ย 

They love the wheat, but they do not grind it;ย 
they would have the grain, but they will not go forth into the fields to gather it;ย 
the fruit hangs upon the tree, but they will not pluck it;ย 
the water flows at their feet, but they will not stoop to drink it.ย 
From such folly deliver us, O Lord!

May this be our daily resolve, “I willย meditateย in your precepts.”

Aย faithfulย preacher isย aย rareย creature; and, like a diamond, asย preciousย as he is rare!

If you alwaysย enjoyย his sermons, that minister is not a faithful steward. He who gives out nothing butย sweetsย is not acting wisely.

It is the duty of the Christian pastor, if he would make full proof of his ministry to warn men of the results of sin to tell them that there is a judgment that for every idle word they speak they will have to account.ย 

Some preachers do not preach of eternal wrath and its terrors. This is cruel, for they ruin souls by hiding from them their ruin!ย 

The object of all true preaching is the heart. Godly ministers aim at divorcing the heart from sin, and wedding it to Christ.ย 

“If you point these things out to the brothers, you will beย a good ministerย of Christ Jesus brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.” 1 Timothy 4:6ย

We are often unable to see and understand the reasons and causes for specific events in our lives, in the lives of others, or in the history of the world. But our lack of understanding does not prevent us from believing God.

“We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28ย

And when the foolish heart would depart, theย Comforterย will not let it. Then will He testify of Jesus, “To whom would you go? Who has eternal life to give, but Him? Turn, turn again to your rest, oh my soul.”ย 

If the soul is mourning; He will testify of the joy that is in Jesus.ย 

If the soul is burdened; “Cast the burden,” He says, “on your Lord Jesus.”ย 

If the soul has lost any creature comfort; “Let it go,” He says, “Jesus is still your salvation and your great reward.”ย 

If the soul is grieved with indwelling sin; “It is pardoned,” He says, “you are free from the curse of sin.”ย 

Whatever the needs of the believer are, the Spirit’s office is to testify of Jesus: “Jesus is what you need–and you have Him freely.”ย 

Theย Comforterย will keep you by His almighty power, until He brings you to the Heaven of heavens–the sight and enjoyment of dear Jesus, eternally dear and lovely Jesus!ย

Since God is our Father–He will take notice of the least good He sees in His children.ย 

If there is but aย sigh for sin–He hears it.ย 
“My groaning is not hidden from You.” Psalm 38:9ย 

If there is but aย penitential tearย which comes out of the eye–He sees it.ย 
“I have seen your tears.” Isaiah 38:5ย 

If there is but aย good intention–He takes notice of it.ย 
“Since it was yourย desireย to build a temple for My name, you have done well to have this desire.” 1 Kings 8:18

God takes notice of theย least spark of graceย in His children. “Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord.” 1 Peter 3:6. The Holy Spirit does not mention Sara’s unbelief, or laughing at the promise.ย He puts a finger upon the scar–and only takes notice of the good that was in her.

More, that good which the saints scarcely take notice of in themselves, God in a special manner observes. “I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink. Then the righteous will answer Him–Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?” They as it were, overlooked and disclaimed their own works of charity! But Christ takes notice of them, “I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat.” Matthew 25

What comfort is this!ย God spies the least good in His children!ย 
He can see a grain of corn, hidden under much chaff.ย 
He can see a little grace, hidden under much corruption!

Thoseย dutiesย which we ourselves censure–He will crown. When a child of God looks over his best duties, he sees so much sin cleaving to them that he is confounded. “Lord,” he says, “there is moreย sulphurย thanย incense, in my prayers.”ย 

But for your comfort, if God is your Father, He will crown those duties which you yourselves censure. He sees there is sincerity in the hearts of His children. Though there may be many defects in the services of His children, He will not cast away their offering.

An earthly father kindly receives a letter from his young child–though there are blots and bad spelling in it.ย What blottings are there in our holy things!ย Yet our Father in Heaven accepts them. “It is my child!”ย God says,ย “I will look upon him, through Christ–with a merciful eye!”

This is mercy!

My dear friend,What thanks ought we to give to our gracious Lord for all of His mercies to us!ย 
I can look back upon every part of my life, and upon it all I can write, “This is mercy!”ย 
Oh, it is all, from first to last, to those who are chosen and called and believe and live by faith in the Son of God, MERCY–from everlasting to everlasting! Mercy before time, mercy in time, mercy beyond time!
Where is the fountainhead, the spring of this mercy? What gives rise to it?ย Nothing but the sovereign grace and free love of the purpose and heart of God Himself.ย 
But on whom do the streams of this fountain flow with their quickening, comforting, sanctifying, glorifying streams?ย 
On the miserable sinner, and none else; for none else are the objects of mercy. On such as you and me! Mercy has made a rich provision . . .ย  to supply all our needs,ย  to pardon all our sins,ย  to save us from all punishment,ย  to entitle us to all glory!

There are more lies told at funerals!

Have you ever noticed that no matter how wicked a person was in his life, he becomes a saint at his funeral?

In reality, he was a bad father, but at his funeral he becomes a great father in the eulogy given by his estranged children. In reality, he was a bad husband, but suddenly, he is a great husband. In reality he was a very bad person, but suddenly everyone talks about what a good person he was.

He was never in church, but suddenly he is a great Christian man. The minister strains awkwardly to speak glowingly about the man he didn’t know and hardly ever saw. In life, he was primarily noted for his wicked works, but suddenly upon his death he is known as a man of many good works.

In short, they lie! There are more lies told at funerals than perhaps at any other occasion, and that’s the way people want it. If the minister did anything other than lie, the family and friends would be outraged!

God is the only one worthy of a eulogy at a funeral, but no one offers a eulogy to God. Instead, they offer lying eulogies for the sinner who is most likely in Hell at that moment. Think about that. The sinner has already arrived at his permanent dwelling place in Hell. He is weeping and gnashing his teeth and writhing in agony in the flames. He is begging for just one drop of cool water for his tongue, but receives no mercy.

God is not impressed with this wicked man. God sees no good in him.

The inhabitants of Hell are not impressed with him. They don’t care about the time he helped an old lady across the street, and the time he gave money to a charitable organization. They don’t think he is or ever was a good person. They don’t like him and want nothing to do with him.

And yet at this very moment, on earth, in a church or funeral home somewhere–the man’s family and the minister are talking about what a wonderful person he was and how he has gone to a better place!

Have you ever noticed how no one goes to Hell–at least no one you know? When have you been at a funeral at which the minister and family did not conspire together to convince themselves and everyone else that the departed sinner was in Heaven?

Jesus taught us that the road to Heaven was narrow, and said that few find it. Conversely, He taught that the road to destruction was broad, and that many were on it. Yet, according to our funerals, Jesus was wrong. No one is in Hell–everyone is in Heaven! Have you ever noticed that all you have to do to get to Heaven is to die? Instead of believing in justification by faith alone, most people believe in justification by death alone. Death is all that is necessary to be transformed miraculously from a depraved wretch into a shining angel.

Why do we do this? Why do we lie? Ministers often do it because they are afraid not to. Many lie because they are false prophets who deceive people, and a funeral is the perfect opportunity to say “Peace, peace!” when there is no peace.

Some family members lie because they are grasping for some piece of comfort in their loss. But consider: Is grasping at a lie truly comforting?

I suspect that most people play this game of falsehood for selfish reasons. If they eulogize the deceased, then they will also feel better about the state of their own souls. If the departed sinner went to Heaven–then they will surely go to Heaven when they die as well. If everyone is a good person and going to Heaven–then we don’t have to worry about our own spiritual condition.

We hate death. We hate to be reminded of our weakness and our fleeting time here. We don’t like to think about what happens after death. We don’t want to consider that there might be a Hell, and we certainly don’t want to hear that most people go there. We don’t want to ponder those realities, but funerals force us to do so. So we fight back against death and reality by laboring hard to convince ourselves that everyone who dies goes to Heaven.

What does it accomplish? Nothing!
Is God deceived? No!
Will our lies change God’s mind? No!
Will our lies get us to Heaven? No!

I am not saying that I think ministers should stand up at funerals and declare with certainty that the departed person is in Hell. But, when the person’s life gives us little confidence that he or she is in Heaven, it would be far better to remain silent about the eternal destiny of the lost one than to boldly declare that the person is in Heaven. Oh for some honesty in our days!

We are but beginners now in spiritual education; for although we have learned the firstย lettersย of the alphabet, we cannot readย wordsย yet, much less can we putย sentencesย together. As one says, “He who has been in heaven but five minutes–knows more than all the theologians on earth combined!”

We have many ungratified spiritual desires at present–but soon every wish shall be satisfied; and all our powers shall find the sweetest employment in that eternal world of joy.

O Christian, within a very little time you shall be rid of all your trials and your troubles.ย 
Your eyes which are now suffused with tears, shall weep no longer.
You shall gaze in ineffable rapture upon the splendor of Him who sits on His glorious throne.ย

Good morning friends! (ฮšฮฑฮปฮทฮผฮญฯฮฑ ฯ†ฮฏฮปฮฟฮน)ย ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

Letโ€™s see where the โ€˜Blind Sightseersโ€™ are going today… ย 

ย Youโ€™ll visit the glorious mountain setting for this monastery with outstanding Byzantine mosaics. Osias Loukas (Holy Luke) settled here in the early 10th.century and the church was built over his grave around 963 AD. It is the earliest extant domed-octagon church, and is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

On the dock…

The Thomson excursion team didnโ€™t disappoint again and were waiting for us as we stepped off the ship. The kind man (sorry forgot his name) walked us to the correct coach as they have booked us the front 2 seats again. He also climbed aboard and said โ€œIโ€™m coming on this tour too and i can keep an eye on you both so you donโ€™t get lost or have any disastersโ€. โ€œFantasticโ€ i said to Sarah as it makes us less stressed knowing there is one of the excursion team (and not just the local guide) on the trip with us.

โ€œWowโ€ฆThere are loads of goats in a field. Steve if you could see youโ€™d really like this, lol!โ€ ๐Ÿคฃ ย

Yay weโ€™ve arrived…

As the monastery was set in the hills there was not much to see as we stepped off the coach. The guide then led us to the top of the steps that circled round and down to the monastery.

โ€œSteve we have lots of long steps going down, iโ€™ll let you know when the next one is approachingโ€ Thank you my loveโ€ i said stepping down the first step. Sarah continued โ€œStep down nowโ€ฆthen 1, 2 , 3 flat steps and then step downโ€ I obviously have to slow down because if i slip or fall just once i could twist or snap my ankle (especially with my weight, lol). โ€œ1,2, step down, 1, 2, 3 step downโ€ isnโ€™t my wife amazing?!ย 

There must have been about 2,000 steps as it took ages, but we wer’nt last and the Thomson man walked with us all of the way, i told you he was a kind man! ๐Ÿ˜€

At the bottom of the steps…ย 

Reaching the bottom of the steps without tripping or slipping once (thanks to my amazing guide Sarah) there was a small cafe, shop, monastery and a museum. โ€œWow youโ€™d neve guess all of this was here when looking from the topโ€ i said whilst looking at this beautiful place.

The guide said we have about 10 minutes before we can go inside the church. It was lovely in the courtyard and looking over the valley down below.

Then as we were looking out (arm around each other) soaking up the hot sun, the Thompson man walked up behind us and asked if weโ€™d like a photo together? โ€œWow yes pleaseโ€. Another photo of me and Sarah iโ€™ll cherish…

The church…

The guide said we had to wait for the monks to disappear as they donโ€™t want to be around us, so they have to leave and not be seen. โ€œThatโ€™s evangelismโ€ i said as the guide was passing Sarah an ankle length skirt. โ€œYou have to put this on if you want to go insideโ€.

As we walked inside the church it was a lot cooler (i was thankful for that) and it also had a peaceful atmosphere. The knowledgable guide told us all about the architectureย of the church and the golden mosaics of the saints and apostles. I didnโ€™t start a discussion on the Iconoclastic Controversiesโ€ฆI just enjoyed listening to the guide whilst Sarah captured a couple of photos. ๐Ÿ˜€ย

ย Back in the courtyard…

There was a little shop where you can buy local honey, olive oil and some other lovely souvenirs. Sarah bought some honey (we thought it would be good for hypoโ€™s) and olive oil for us to try on salads (Oopps, i accidentally said saladsโ€ฆI meant steak, lol) when we get home.

The queue was pretty long in the shop so unfortunately we didnโ€™t have time to have a proper Greek coffee in the cafe. We met back up with the group and headed towards the mighty steps.

I am much better walking up steps as the step casts a shadow and i can just make out the contrast and figure out where the steps areโ€ฆAnd itโ€™s much easier to fall upwards than fall down and keep rolling head over heals until youโ€™re left in a crumpled, crushed and broken mess at the bottomโ€ฆLeft to exsanguinate as your life slowly slipps away, one blood drop at a time!ย ๐Ÿค•

Returning to the dock..

The coach dropped us back right near the dock and as the excursion was only a short oneโ€ฆWe had time to explore a little of the town, yay!ย 

Oh did i mention it was burning hot?!ย โ˜€๏ธ ย

I know for most of you (and especially Sarah) that 36ยฐ isnโ€™t that hotโ€ฆBut for me who wears cargo shorts all year round (even through the winter) it is burning. โ˜€๏ธ ย 

We started walking and noticed their wasnโ€™t many people around, as not many places were open. So we turned back and headed up the other street. We found a huge cafe/restaurant and headed inside. The place was empty but we could hear a coffee machine and some pots in the back rattling. โ€œIโ€™m not sure where we can order from? And iโ€™m not sure if this place is open?โ€ Sarah said whilst trying to find anyone at all. We walked back outside and Sarah said โ€œThere is a woman serving coffee to those people right over there (on the dock overlooking the sea about 100 metres away) but itโ€™s much too far to be part of this cafeโ€.

We walked around a little further and made sure there were no other shops in the area, then we headed back to the dock to get a table and wait for the barista. โ˜• She did walk all the way back to the cafe weโ€™d just been in to get the coffeesโ€ฆWow iโ€™d collapse of heat exhaustion. ๐Ÿค•ย

Wowโ€ฆThis was the view we had from our table! We had plenty of time to just chill (burn) and relax and just soak in the view. Sarah and i love being beside the sea either like this or on a beach, as we live in a super green area near trees, village greens and conservation areasโ€ฆSo we love having holidays with sea and sand! ๐Ÿ˜€ โ˜€๏ธย 

Yesterday we had our first โ€˜Fredo Cappuccinoโ€™ in the cafe in Corinth, so when the barista placed 2 of them down in front of us we both grinned. ๐Ÿ˜€ โ€œWowโ€ we both said โ€œthis is the best one so farโ€ i said whilst trying not to drink it all in one go! We had about 2 hours before we needed to get back onto the ship, so we ordered 2 more fredo ย cappuccinos. After a while i asked to order 1 more for me and the barista said โ€œNo youโ€™ve had 2 already and youโ€™re not having a 3rdโ€ i thought she was joking until i tried asking again! ๐Ÿ˜ข

After the amazing coffees we decided to have a quick walk up and down the empty dock before heading back on board.ย

ย Back on the ship..

We had time to refresh and change out of our sweaty clothes and make our way out on deck for a couple more shots before we leave the port. ย

Good morning friends! (ฮšฮฑฮปฮทฮผฮญฯฮฑ ฯ†ฮฏฮปฮฟฮน)๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

I love the fact that weโ€™ve just sailed to Corinth on the โ€˜Spiritโ€™ and weโ€™re now going on a trip along the Corinth canal, then to walk around ancient Corinth in the historic footsteps of the Apostle Paul. To say i was excited is an understatement! ๐Ÿ˜€ย 

But firstโ€ฆโ˜€๏ธ ย 

Iโ€™m not good in the sun but Sarah comes alive in the scorching hot weather. So i sloshed on my sun cream as it was already 36 degrees outside (ouch) Iโ€™ve also bought myself a โ€˜Tactical Sun Hatโ€™ to try and keep myself cooler in the sun and provide a little shade with the wide rimโ€ฆIt worked really well but i was still dripping like a candle in a Salvador Dali painting! ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

Corinth canal…

Get ready to be impressed. The Corinth Canal marries up the Gulf of Corinth in the northwest with the Saronic Gulf in the southeast. Itโ€™s 3.9 miles long and its width varies from 69 feet at the bottom to 82 feet at the water’s surface. Before it was built, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic Sea had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese, adding another 185 miles to their journey. On this fascinating tour youโ€™ll drive to Isthmia, around 1 hr’s drive, where a boat will be waiting to whisk you off. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views as you sail through this famous canal. Along the way, your guide will tell you interesting facts about the way it was built.

ย We stepped of the air conditioned coach and just as i said โ€œArgghh now thatโ€™s hotโ€ Sarah said โ€œWow thatโ€™s better, it was freezing on that coachโ€ we followed the group to the boat.

After Sarah excellently guided me onto the boat, we took our seats. The whole trip was just stunning and we were blown away by the walls of the canal and the sheer size of it. The guide was telling us all about the history etc over the loud speakers (my fave part as i canโ€™t see the scenery until i get home and really zoom in for a blurry look). I do listen and hear Sarahโ€™s detailed descriptions of the landscapes and any other points of interest. I also take in the other people around me and their reactions too.ย

ย The Peloponnese…

After doing a 180หš turn we headed back down the canal, fantastic! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย

ย Ancient Corinth…

You’ll now take a short drive to ancient Corinth, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the ruins of the “Agora” marketplace as well as the Temples of Apollo and Aphrodite.

We shot off the coach and followed the guide closely from the front, the path was all uphill and did i mention it was scorching hot?!ย โ˜€๏ธ I kept saying to Sarahย โ€œWow the Apostle Paul actually came here!โ€ and after about the 10th timeโ€ฆWeโ€™d reached the top.

After a brief history lesson all about the temples and the culture as it was back in the day, we headed along another hot dusty path and ended up at the Synagogue. โ€œWowโ€ i said โ€œPaul wouldโ€™ve visited this actual Synagogue several timesโ€ฆItโ€™s simply amazing that iโ€™m standing in biblical historyโ€.ย 

Upon leaving the synagogue the guide stopped and pointed to an ancient hebrew marking on the wall. Sarah quickly took a photo of it to share. I continued โ€œWow, Paul may have walked under this very arch, wow!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

The Agora…

Moving further down and heading towards the agora, the sound of the cicadas were deafening, they were almost drowning out the voice of the guideโ€ฆIt sounded like i was walking around with a massive bee hive stuck on my head but less sticky and much less painful! ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

โ€œWowโ€ฆthe beema ย seatโ€ i said whilst trying to get excited but actually about to collapse due to heat exhaustion. โ€œThe agora! This is where the Apostle Paul wouldโ€™ve been making tents..No way!โ€ i kept going โ€œDid you know Paul stayed in Corinth for about 18 months and he wouldโ€™ve have frequently visited and worked around here!โ€ Sarah replied โ€œYes i know Steve itโ€™s incredible, but weโ€™re getting left behind as you keep stopping and making wow noises, lol!โ€ ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

โ€œSarah could you take some photos of me in the Agora and in front of the beema seat? Iโ€™d love to have a photo as a keep sakeโ€ฆOh and have i mentioned that the Apostle Paul wouldโ€™ve been around here?!โ€. Sarah puts up with a lot! ๐Ÿคฃ ย ย

The cicadas were still singing their thunderous lament as we walked deeper into the Agora. The guide stopped to show us the ruins and described how it would have looked and what would be happening back in classical times. ย

ย And then…

Just when you thought it couldnโ€™t get any betterโ€ฆSarah managed to fit the whole place in one monumental panorama! ย

At this point i was so exhausted, head and shoulders stooped forward and my mouth was dry and frothing. I managed a slow shuffle back to the air conditioned coach. Sarah said โ€œOh itโ€™s freezing on here!ย 

It still blows me away when i think of this excursion to ancient Corinth and how we were actually there. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Back at the ship…

After freshening up back in the cabin, we still had a few hours before the ship left port. Weโ€™ve found that if the excursion leaves us with a few hours to spare we can use the ship as the starting reference and go and explore the town nearest to the dock (any further and weโ€™ll get lost). This makes for a full day as we can go on the excursion around the island and then visit local shops and markets around the dock areaโ€ฆYay! ๐Ÿ˜€ย

โ€œYayโ€ฆSteve a beach!โ€ Sarah shouts as we step out of the dock, she continues โ€œNo way, holidays donโ€™t start until iโ€™ve put my feet on the sandโ€ฆCome on!โ€ I was just about to protest (as iโ€™d left my beach shoes in the cabin) when Sarah dragged (i mean guided) me onto the powdery sand.ย 

The boiling hot sun, the powdery white sand and the gentle touch of the sea rolling over Sarahโ€™s feet educed a wonderful smile. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

My new Microfibre towel…

We were now wet, frazzled and covered in sand and we walked for a while before we found a bench under a large tree. โ€œYesโ€ฆHere you goโ€ is said as i unclipped my new microfibre hand towel from my carabiner loop on my BDU shorts. I bought this little towel just before this cruise as i wanted to be more prepared as we learn a little more what we need from each holidayโ€ฆAnd this time it worked beautifully! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

After a while we were both sand free, dry and ready for a cold drink. We walked down a few streets then Sarah said โ€œSteve, i think this looks like a cafe? I wonder if they do iced coffees?โ€ โ€œI hope soโ€ i said feeling like a pulsing nuclear reactor.ย 

They did the best iced coffee (Freddo Cappuccino) and even a sugar free one for Sarah…ย

As we were sitting outside drinking our amazing coffeesโ€ฆThe man weโ€™d met at the Captains table last night walked past and said hello. โ€œWowโ€ i said to Sarah after a brief chat with the man, โ€œWeโ€™re even making friends and itโ€™s only the first day off the shipโ€.ย 

Sadly itโ€™s now time to return back to the shipโ€ฆ

As we were taking lots of photos, another nice person from our ship walked up behind us and asked if weโ€™d like a photo together?! โ€œOh yes please that would be so kind of youโ€ i said as i passed her my phone. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

Back on ship…

Weโ€™d had a fantastic day and had lots to talk about with ย the people sat around our table at the evening meal. Itโ€™s lovely to hear other peoples stories from what they had done throughout the day, and to hear the adventures from the other excursions.

On Saturday evening Thomson Spirit sails to Itea, Greece. To arrive on Sunday morning having travelled 59 nautical miles at an average speed of 6 knots.

“My times are in Your hands!” Psalm 31:15ย 

What a mercy it is that all our concerns are in sure hands! Not aย hairย of our heads can fall to the ground, but by the appointment of Him who orders and marshals theย starsย and calls them all by their names!

Diseases and sicknesses areย His messengers, and, when they have answered His end–then He will recall them. But on many accounts there is aย need beย that we should sometimes be in heaviness for a season. O may we learn to take up the cross, and to kiss the rod of affliction. We need to look through allย second causes–to Him who appoints and over-rules, and without whose permission, not a hair of our heads shall fall to the ground.ย 

The Lord has promised to direct, moderate, sanctify, and relieve every trial of every kind. I long to have a more entire submission to His will, and a more steadfast confidence in His Word–to trust Him and wait on Him–to see His hand, and praise His name, in every circumstance of life, great and small.

Isย sicknessย your present cross? It can come no sooner, nor fall heavier, than He bids it. And when His end is answered, and His hour comes to give relief–then sickness departs at His word. The cure becomes easy then, even where it seemed desperate before.ย 

Our comforts are never safer than when we can fully trust the Lord to do with them, and with us–as He sees fit. He will not willingly or unnecessarily grieve His redeemed children. When His arm seems lifted up to strike them–how often does He put it into their hearts to run toward Him and humble themselves before Him, and thus prevent the blow!

We shall have cause to be thankful for all our afflictions–if the Lord is pleased to employ them as means to make us more humble and broken-hearted, and to wean our hearts from this vain world.

Sickness often gives us a sensible proof of the vanity of everything earthly. May the Lord sanctify our sicknesses and pains, to quicken our desires for that better world, when pain shall be no more!

Let this comfort you:ย that Jesus is the Great Physician!ย 

“Great crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at His feet; and He healed them!” Matthew 15:30ย

Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, Heaven and earth are full of Your glory! Blessing and honor and glory and power be to You, O Father of mercies, O God of all grace and love.

We thank You, that, as vile and sin-soiled as we are–we may come into Your immediate presence, and hold this converse with You, and commune with You concerning all ourย concerns, all ourย sins, andย fears,ย andย hopesย andย desires.ย 

We are astonished that we, poor sinners on earth, may speak directly to You–our greatย and glorious God, on Your throne in the Heaven of heavens! How wondrous the thought thatย our poor breathingsย may fly on theย wings of faith, and have instant access to the ears of Your grace!ย 

We thank You that, in the multitude of Your tender mercies and the riches of Your pitiful compassion, You have been pleased to erectย this throne of graceย before which we now most humbly bow. We bless You that here, free grace reigns. We bless You that, at all times and in all places, we have open access toย You through the blood of Your dear Son.ย 

We bless You that theย veilย is open, and that in His great name we may ever approach and find You . . .
ย  ready to hear,ย ย 
ย  waiting to be gracious,ย 
ย  arrayed in smiles of love,ย ย 
ย  bidding us to touch the scepter of Your sovereign mercy,ย ย 
ย  inviting us to pour out every need and desire of our hearts,ย ย

Grant, oh grant, that we may be wholly consecrated to You. May we, in spirit, soar farย above earth. May our hearts be fast barred against admission of worldly thoughts or cares. Send Your peace, passing all understanding, as a flood into our anxious minds.ย  May our meditations of You be sweet. May we drink deeply of the refreshing streams proceeding out ofย Your throne. May we feast on the heaven-sent manna of Your precious Word, and thus gather strength for the upward race.

Hear us, answer us, bless us we pray. All we ask is in Jesus’ name, and for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
