No longer will there be any curse!

(Maria Sandberg, “Glimpses of Heaven!” 1880)

“No longer will there be any curse!” Revelation 22:3Ā
Our beautiful world, filled with the wonderful works of God, bears evident tracesĀ that it is not what it was created at first. It bears everywhere, the marks of a great change–which change is accounted for in the Bible by the fall of Adam. God made everything very good–but man sinned, andĀ the curseĀ came upon himself and the whole creation! Though still beautiful, yet how much is its beautyĀ marredĀ andĀ defaced!Ā Now, thorns and thistles spring up, where once were only lovely flowers and sweet fruits. The wild beasts of the forest, though still beautiful in outward form–now possess violent and ferocious dispositions; and the beasts ofĀ burdenĀ groan under the tyranny of man. Man himself is subject to labor and toil, to sorrow and sickness and death. Even his most innocent enjoyments are marred by sin!

But thanks be to God, the promise ofĀ deliverance from the curseĀ sounds in our ears in this blessed Scripture, “No longer will there be any curse!” Where then, is this land of blessing and perfection? It is thatĀ ParadiseĀ which Christ has gone to prepare for His people; that “RestĀ which remains for the people of God.”Ā

Here on earth, even our very blessings areĀ mixedĀ with signs of the curse.Ā
But there shall beĀ no more curseĀ in our Heavenly home:
Ā  no more toil and labor,
Ā  no more weariness and faintness,
Ā  no more hunger or thirst,
Ā  no more bitter cold or burning heat,
Ā  no more disappointment,Ā
Ā  no more sorrow,
Ā  no more pain,
Ā  no more sickness,Ā
Ā  no more death!Ā

In Heaven there shall be no more curse, but all will be theĀ perfection of bliss. Who can conceive the happiness of such a state? For this, the whole creation groans and travails in pain, eagerly waiting for its consummation.

Let us, then, who have such exceedingly great and precious promises, when sighing under theĀ effectsĀ of the curse in any of its forms–gladly turn our thoughts to meditate on Heaven’s glorious realities! And when admiring the beautiful works of God, which still exist to show us what they once were–let us also turn our thoughts to the greater beauty and glory of our Paradise above!

One reason why the church has so little influence over the world

(Charles Spurgeon)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind!” Romans 12:2

I believe that one reason why the church has so little influence over the world–is because the world has so much influence over the church!

It is overwhelming to see the growing worldliness of the visible church. Many professed Christians–the Lord alone knows whether they are true believers or not–give us grave cause for apprehension. We see them tolerating practices which would not have been endured by their fathers; my blood chills when I think of how far some fashionable professors go astray!

When the Church descends to the world’s level, her spiritual power is gone. Jesus said, “Preach the gospel to every creature!” But men are getting tired of the divine plan; they are going to be saved by the music, or by the theatricals, or by the amusements! Well, they may try these things as long as ever they like; but nothing can ever come of the whole thing but utter disappointment and confusion:
  God is dishonored,
  the gospel is travestied,
hypocrites are manufactured by thousands, and
the church is dragged down to the level of the world! An unholy church! It is useless to the world–and of no esteem among men. It is . . .
  an abomination,
   Hell’s laughter, and
Heaven’s abhorrence! “The world has absorbed the Church, and the church is content that it should be so!” Horatius Bonar

“Conformity to the world, in all ages, has proved the ruin of the church!” Rowland Hill

“The spirit of the world is eating out the very heart and life of true godliness!” George Everard

Refined worldliness is the present snare of the Church of God!” Horatius Bonar

The antidote for fear!

(Alexander Smellie, “The Secret Place” 1907) Ā LISTEN to audio!Ā Ā Download audio

“Fear not, for I haveĀ redeemedĀ you! I haveĀ calledĀ you by your name–you areĀ Mine!” Isaiah 43:1

God is intensely desirous to rid me of my needless fears. Does He not give me reason after reason for peacefulness, calmness and hope?

1.Ā “Fear not,” He says, “for I haveĀ redeemedĀ you!”Ā
Ā  What a work it was!Ā
Ā  What a price it demanded!Ā
Ā  What a sorrow it involved!
It meant the surrender and sacrifice of His Son, His Only-Begotten, His Well-Beloved. It meant for the King of Glory, to be born in a lowly stable, with the ox and donkey and camel. After a life of suffering, it meant a stark and dreadful Cross onĀ the Hill of Shame!

A Scottish professor, who retained to the last a childlike heart, speaking to his students one day about the atoning sacrifice of Calvary, said, with the tears running down his cheeks,Ā “Ay, ay, do you know what it was? Do you know what it was? It was damnation–and He took it lovingly!”

It wasĀ myĀ damnation–and He took it lovingly! And since God gave all this for me, then how can He ever abandon me? Let my heart be confident and strong.

2.Ā There is HisĀ understanding of my case. “Fear not,” He continues, “for I haveĀ called you by name!” He has such multitudes to remember, and yet He knows me individually and intimately! TheĀ starsĀ lie along the face of the sky like bright unnumbered dust; but He knows star from star. TheĀ flowersĀ spring up in battalions; but not a single flower is “born to blush unseen”–He knows it, and rejoices in it. There are billions of people in the world today, and I cannot grasp the tremendous aggregate; but He is familiar with each beating soul.Ā

Just so, He comprehends . . .
Ā  my special needs and circumstances,
Ā  my overbearing duties,
Ā  my sore temptations,
Ā  my herculean difficulties,
Ā  my subtle and persevering foes.
Should I not be strong and courageous, when the Lord of Heaven has such perfect acquaintance with me?

3.Ā And there is HisĀ ownershipĀ of my soul. “Fear not,” He commands once more, “forĀ you are Mine!” In a sense I was always His possession; but since HeĀ purchasedĀ me with Christ’s blood, I am among . . .
Ā  His jewels,
Ā  His trophies,
Ā  His special possessions,
Ā  His redeemed children!Ā

Why should I be afraid? I am Christ’sĀ redeemedĀ child, and HeĀ ownsĀ andĀ keepsĀ me!

My subtlest and strongest enemies are within myself!

(Alexander Smellie, “The Secret Place” 1907)

Fighting a long and hard campaign, I shall be very foolish if I underestimateĀ my foes.Ā
There areĀ manyĀ of them, but they serve underĀ a trinity of wicked captains.

1. “If any man loves theĀ WORLD,” writes John, “the love of the Father is not in him.” The world is my sworn and unrelenting enemy; an enemy all the more dangerous because it professes to be something so different–the best of comrades and the truest of friends.Ā

I must take my part, and that with diligence, in the world’sĀ business. Yet what a risk there is, that it should absorb my thoughts morning and night! Then I shall becomeĀ selfishĀ andĀ earthlyĀ andĀ unspiritual.Ā

I must make acquaintance with the world’sĀ literature, and much of it is beautiful and good. But I am prone to give it an undue attention, and to forget theĀ divine library which God’s finger has penned.Ā

I must mingle among the world’sĀ citizens, and many of them are love-worthy and full of charm. Yet, when I prize them overmuch, they separate me from Father and Son and Holy Spirit.Ā

Under its kindly face, the world is a hostile power!

2. “Your adversary theĀ DEVIL,” writes Peter. Here is another stupendous antagonist. TheĀ accuser of the brethrenĀ prowls about, unseen and malignant, sleeplessly plotting my harm! Never should I leave off my spiritual armor.

3. “TheĀ FLESHĀ lusts against the Spirit,” writes Paul. After all,Ā my subtlest and strongest enemies are within myself!Ā Old sin comes back, seeking the mastery again. And much in me loves it, and goes out to meet and embrace it. There, indeed, is my greatest hazard–thereĀ my most deadly snare!

“O wretched man that I am!” I re-echo the ancient cry, “who shall deliver me from the body of this death!”Ā Yes, my worst foes are entrenched within the citadel of Mansoul, within my own heart!

My God, I have no might against this great company, neither do I know what to do! But my eyes are upon You!

“To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy–to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!” Jude 1:24-25

The happiness of Heaven!

(Thomas Sherman, “Divine Breathings; Or, a Pious Soul Thirsting after Christ”)
“NoĀ eyeĀ has seen,Ā
Ā noĀ earĀ has heard,Ā
Ā noĀ mindĀ has conceived,
Ā what God has prepared for those who love Him!” 1 Corinthians 2:9

TheĀ vessel of our soulĀ is too capacious to be filled with all the pleasures and delights the world put together. But hereafter, our pleasures and delights shall be too great for the most capacious vessel to hold! Our glory shall be so great, thatĀ powerĀ as well asĀ goodness, shall be given by God Himself to renew and enlarge these vessels, that they may be capable of receiving and retaining that glory. Strength and love shall go forth together, to prepare and elevate our dispositions, that they may be suitable for such a transcendent and exalted state!

At present, we are too weak to bear such a weight of glory; therefore God will immortalize us, that we may be able toĀ sustainĀ it! And because our eternal joys cannot fully enter intoĀ usĀ while in this world, we shall fully enter intoĀ themĀ in heaven.Ā

What fool would place onlyĀ a few drops of carnal pleasuresĀ into so large a vessel as the soul; and neglect theĀ spring, or rather theĀ oceanĀ of unspeakable bliss, and everlasting glory!

O my soul, what a glorious day is coming, when theĀ vesselsĀ of mercy shall be cast into theĀ oceanĀ of mercy, and be filled to the very brim withĀ divineĀ mercy! Then the soul that is love-sick for Jesus–shall lie in the bosom of divine love, and forever be satisfied with unfathomable love! Then the children of God shall have a full fruition of God, and be forever satisfied with the presence of God! The joy of His glorious presence, the fullness of His joy, theĀ sweetnessĀ of this fullness, the eternity of this sweetness–the heart of man can never adequately comprehend.Ā

Lord, let the glory which you have prepared for me, turn my soul from the vanities of earth!

“You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand!” Psalm 16:11

Such a god should be derided!

(William S. Plumer, “A Treatise on Providence” 1865)
The unrenewed heart is atheistic in its inclinations.

“They say: The Lord doesn’t see it. The God of JacobĀ doesn’t pay attention.” Psalm 94:7″The wicked say to themselves: ‘God isn’t watching!Ā He will never notice!’
Ā Arise, O Lord! Punish the wicked, O God!”Ā Psalm 10:11-12

Nothing more derogatory to the character of God can possibly be said, than that He doesĀ notĀ rule the world.Ā

GodĀ reignsĀ is a logical conclusion from GodĀ is. To deny God’sĀ providenceĀ is as atheistic as to deny His existence! A god, who neither sees, nor hears, nor knows, nor cares, nor helps, nor saves–is a vanity, and can never claim homage from intelligent men.Ā Such a god should be derided, not worshiped! He might suit the mythology of Paganism, or meet the demands of an infidel heart–but could never command the allegiance, or win the confidence of an enlightened and pious man!Ā

The world may as well be without a god–as have one who is incompetent to rule it, or, who, wrapping Himself in a mantle of careless indifference, abandons creation to the governance of puny mortals, to the rule of devils, or to the sway ofĀ blind chance!Ā Such conduct may well comport with the character of false gods–but is wholly abhorrent to the nature of Jehovah! God’s tender mercies are over all His works. His kingdom rules over all!

“Our God is in Heaven and doesĀ whatever He pleases!” Psalm 115:3Ā

“For I know that the Lord is great; our Lord is greater than all gods. The Lord doesĀ whatever He pleasesĀ in Heaven and on earth, in the seas and all the depths!” Psalm 135:5-6″Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!”Ā Revelation 19:6

The result has been . . .

(Arthur Pink, “An Exposition of the Gospel of John”)
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first.Ā If youĀ belongedĀ to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen youĀ outĀ of the world.Ā That is why the world hates you!”Ā John 15:18-19Ā

“Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you!” 1 John 3:13Ā

The professing Church has boasted that it would convert the world. To accomplish this aim, it has sought to “popularize” religion. Innumerable devices have been employedĀ to attract the ungodly–many of which even a sense of propriety should have suppressed!Ā

The result has beenĀ that the world has converted the professing Church!Ā

But notwithstanding this, it still remains true thatĀ the world hates the true followers of the Lamb.Ā And nowhere is this more plainly evident, than in those who belong to what we may termĀ the religious world!

If you resolve that by Divine grace you will live godly in Christ Jesus, then know that persecution must be your portion. And that persecution will come upon you not from atheists and infidels, but from those bearing theĀ nameĀ of Christians. It will issue from those who still keep up a form (or semblance) of godliness, but who are strangers to its living power. It will come to you from empty professors whose compromising ways are condemned by your refusal to conform thereto; whose worldliness and carnality is rebuked by your spirituality.Ā

Remember, it was theĀ religious leadersĀ who hounded the Savior to His death!

Ā “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ JesusĀ willĀ be persecuted!” 2 Timothy 3:12Ā

But he was a leper!

But he was a leper!

(Arthur Pink, “Gleanings from Elisha”)
“Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was aĀ great manĀ . . .Ā but he was a leper!” 2 Kings 5:1Ā

Naaman was aĀ great manĀ . . .Ā but he was a leper!Ā He was the victim of a loathsome and incurable disease. He was a pitiful and repulsive object, with no prospect whatever of any improvement in his condition.

Yes, my reader, the highly-privileged and honored Naaman was a leper–and as such he portrays what you are and what I am by nature. God’s Word does notĀ flatterĀ man. It lays him in the dust, which is one reason why it is so unpalatable to the great majority of people. It is the Word of truth, and therefore instead of painting flattering pictures of human nature–it represents things as they actually are.
Ā
Instead ofĀ laudingĀ man–itĀ abasesĀ him.

Instead of speaking of the dignity and nobility of human nature, it declares it to be leprous–sinful, corrupt, depraved, defiled!

Instead of eulogizing human progress–it insists that “every man at his best state is altogether vanity!” (Psalm 39:5)

And when the Holy Scriptures define man’s attitude toward, and relationship with God–they insist that “There is none righteous, no, not one. There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God” (Romans 3:10-11). They declare that we are HisĀ enemiesĀ by our wicked works (Colossians 1:21), and that consequently we are under the condemnation and curse of God’s law, and that His holy wrath abides on us! (John 3:36)

The Word of truth declares that by natureĀ all of us are spiritual lepers–foul and filthy, unfit for the divine presence, “being alienated from the life of God.” (Ephesians 4:18)Ā

You may occupy a good position in this world, even an eminent station in the affairs of this life. You may have made good in your vocation, and wrought praiseworthy achievements by human standards. You may be honorable in the sight of your fellows–butĀ how do you appear in the eyes of God?Ā You are a leper–one whom His law pronounces unclean, one who is utterly unfit for His holy presence! As it was with Naaman, so it is with you:Ā “He was a great man–but a leper!”

We would not be faithful to our calling were we to glide over that in God’s Word which is distasteful to proud flesh and blood. Nor would we be faithful to our readers if we glossed over their frightful and fatal natural condition. It is in their souls’ interests that they should face this humiliating and unpleasant fact: that in God’s sight, they are spiritual lepers!

But we mustĀ personalizeĀ it. HaveĀ you, my reader, realized this fact in your own case? Have you seen yourself as you are in God’s sight? Are you aware that your soul is suffering from a disease that neither you nor any human being can cure? It is so, whether you realize it or not. The Scriptures declare that from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head, there is no soundness in you. Yes, that in the sight of the holy God, you are a mass of “wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores!” (Isaiah 1:6) Only as you penitently accept that divine verdict, is there any hope for you.

Two Filthy Rooms!

(Arthur Pink)
“And when the Spirit comes, He will convict the world of sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.” John 16:8

One of the principle things which distinguishes a regenerate person from an unregenerate one, may be likened untoĀ two filthy rooms:

In one room, the blinds are raised and the sunlight streams in, exposing the filth all around.Ā

In the other room, the blinds are lowered, and one walking through the room would be unable to discern its real condition.

Thus it is in the case of one who has been renewed by the Spirit: his eyes have been opened to see theĀ awful filthwhich lurks in every corner of his heart.

But in the case of the unregenerate, though they have occasional twinges of conscience when they act wrongfully, they are very largely ignorant of the awful fact that they are a complete mass of corruption in the pure eyes of the thrice holy God.

Abraham acknowledged,Ā “I am dust and ashes!”Ā Genesis 18:27

Job said of himself, “I am vile!” Job 40:4

David admitted, “I am a worm!” Psalm 22:6

Isaiah confessed, “Woe is me! I am ruined!” Isaiah 6:5

Peter affirmed, “I am a sinful man, O Lord!” Luke 5:8

Paul considered himself, “The chief of sinners!” 1 Timothy 1:15

LOST!

(Arthur Pink, 1951)
“But if our gospel is hid–it is hid to those who areĀ LOST!Ā The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers!” 2 Corinthians 4:3-4Ā

What multitudes of people there are who have no concern over, in fact, no consciousness of, their woeful condition! While they do not regard themselves as perfect, yet they are not aware that there is anything seriously wrong with them. They are respectable people, law-abiding citizens, and nothing particular ever troubles their conscience. They consider that they are certainly no worse than their religious neighbors, and though they scarcely ever read the Bible or enter a church, they fully expect to go to Heaven when they die.Ā

Some of them will indeed admit that they are sinners, but imagine that their good works far outnumber their bad ones. Some of them were sprinkled as infants, attended a Sunday school class as children, said their prayers each night, and later joined the church. Nevertheless, to this moment, they have never realized that they are the enemies of God, an abomination in the eyes of His holiness, and that Hell is their just desert! They see no beauty or glory in the Gospel, no suitableness in it unto their case–and therefore do they despise and reject it.

Though Satan rules in their hearts and lives (Ephesians 2:2), yet it is by their own free consent. They voluntarily obey him and submit to his will. His dominion over them is maintained by . . .
Ā  keeping their minds in darkness,
Ā  deceiving and deluding them,
Ā  blinding them by pride, prejudice, and the workings of their own corruptions.Ā

Nowhere but in the Scriptures, can we learn what is the real condition of the natural man. There his case is diagnosed with unerring precision by theĀ divine Physician.Ā Many are the terms used therein by the Holy Spirit to describe the solemn and direful state to which the fall has reduced every descendant of Adam; and among them probably none is more pointed and awesome than is the termĀ LOST!Ā How dismal is its sound! How much is summed up in that single word! It signifies . . .
Ā  that the natural man is in a sinful, wretched, and perilous state,Ā
Ā  that he is far astray from God,
Ā  that he has willfully and wantonly forsaken the path of duty.Ā

Lost! A traveler from time to eternity, treading the road that leads to certain and everlasting destruction!Ā

Lost! A creature who has forfeited the approbation and favor of his Maker, and is now an outcast from Him!

Lost! One who has squandered his substance in riotous living, and is now a spiritual bankrupt and pauper. He is out of the way of eternal peace and blessing, and utterly incapable of finding his way back to it!Ā

Fearful beyond words, is the condition of fallen man. His case is as hopeless as that of a dying person whose disease is incurable. A lostĀ childĀ is a pitiful object–but what mind can estimate, or pen depict, the tragedy of a lostĀ soul?Ā Lost now, lostĀ forever–unless a sovereign God intervenes and performs a miracle of mercy for its recovery!Ā

Man is lostĀ positively, in that he is not what he should be. He is . . .
Ā  a defiled creature,
Ā  a guilty criminal,Ā
Ā  a child of disobedience!

LostĀ judicially, under the curse of God’s broken Law, sentenced to death, “condemned already” (John 3:18), the wrath of God now abiding on him! (John 3:36)

LostĀ meritoriously, for his transgressions deserve eternal death, which is the wages of sin–and fully has he earned them.Ā

LostĀ experientiallyĀ in point ofĀ abilityĀ orĀ powerĀ to recover himself, he is “not subject to the law of God, neither indeedĀ canĀ he be” (Romans 8:7). The moral impotency of man is such that he is utterly incapable of performing a single spiritual act: “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good, who are accustomed to doing evil! (Jeremiah 13:23)

None will know how utterly man is lost, until they experience God’s wrath in Hell, and can then measure the fearful distance they have departed from Him!

Thus man is lost in every way, and in every sense!Ā
Federally, by the imputation to him of the guilt of his representative’s offence.Ā
Effectually, by the transmission of a corrupt nature from his parents.Ā
Actually, by his own evil conduct, “you have destroyed yourself” (Hosea 13:9).Ā
Practically, by the forming of evil habits, so that now he is “held with the cords of his sins” (Proverbs 5:22).Ā

Lost toĀ God,Ā for He has no love, no service, no glory from the unregenerate; so that they deprive Him of the honor of their creation.Ā

Man is lost toĀ himselfĀ . . .
Ā  to all reason and rational inducements,Ā
Ā  to right conceptions and perceptions,Ā
Ā  to every consideration of God’s claims upon him.Ā

Lost to all sense ofĀ shameĀ for his horrible condition in the eyes of the Holy One.Ā

So lost as to have “delight in wickedness” (2 Thessalonians 2:12).Ā

Lost to piety and true happiness.Ā

Out of the way of holiness, peace, and security.Ā

Lost in sin, in ignorance, and error.Ā

LostĀ irretrievably, like a sheep that wanders farther and farther astray, until it perishes. Man is utterly unable to find his way back to God, for he is in total darkness–a wanderer in a pathless desert, perishing in a howling wilderness. What makes man’s case yet worse, is thatĀ he has no desire to be recovered!Ā He has perversely set himself up to be his own master, and stubbornly determines to please himself and carve out his own career.Ā

Rather than return unto God, the unregenerate would take any road which leads farther away from Him. They resent His expostulations and resist the strivings of His Spirit. If not with their lips, with their hearts, they say unto God: “Depart from us, for we have no desire to know Your ways!” (Job 21:14). Yes, they would much prefer to be annihilated than yet meet God face to face, and have to give an account of themselves to Him (Romans 14:12). They hate His holiness and dread His justice, while despising His goodness and abusing His mercies!Ā

An unerring chart by which to steer through the dangerous sea of life!

(Arthur Pink, “The Attributes of God“)

God has placed His Word in our hands for an intensely practical purpose; namely, to direct our walk and to regulate our deportment. The primary purpose for which God gave the Scriptures, is to make a practicaluse of them–ordering the details of our lives by its rules and regulations.

“Your Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105. The metaphor used here is taken from a man walking along a dangerous road on a dark night, in urgent need of a lantern to show him where to walk safely and comfortably, to avoid injury and destruction.

God, in His infinite condescension and transcendent grace, has given us His Word for this very purpose, so that we need not stumble along blindly, ignorant of what pleases or displeases Him–but that we might know His mind. That divine Word is not given to us simply for information, but . . .
  to regulate our conduct,
  to enlighten our minds,
  and to mold our hearts.

The Word supplies us with an unerring chart by which to steer through the dangerous sea of life. If we sincerely and diligently follow, it will deliver us from disastrous rocks and submerged reefs; and direct us safely to the heavenly harbor. That Word has all the instructions we need for every problem, and every trouble we may be called upon to face. That Word has been given to us “that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:17. How thankful we should be, that God has favored us with such a Word!

This world is a dark place, and it is only as we take heed to the Word, to the light God has given us–that we shall be able to perceive and avoid “the broad road which leads to destruction,” and discern the narrow way which alone “leads unto eternal life.”

Our first duty, and our first aim, must be to take up the Scriptures to ascertain what is God’s revealed will for us–what are the paths He forbids us to walk, what are the ways pleasing in His sight.

The Scriptures are not given us, primarily for our intellectual gratification, nor for emotional admiration, but for life’s regulation. Nor are the precepts and commands, the warnings and encouragements contained therein, simply for our information. They are to be reduced to practice; they require unqualified obedience. He who treasures the divine precepts in his heart, and diligently seeks to walk by their rule, will escape those evils which destroy his fellows.

Thus the great business of the Christian is to regulate his life by, and conform his conduct to–the precepts of the written Word, and the example left us by the Incarnate Word. As he does so, and in proportion as he does so, he is . . .
emancipated from the darkness of his natural mind,
freed from the follies of his corrupt heart,
delivered from the mad course of this world,
and escapes the snares of the devil.

Correcting in love–not smiting in wrath!

“Whom the Lord loves, He chastens.” Hebrews 12:6

The Father’s wise and loving discipline is in view here.

It is of first importance that we learn to draw a sharp distinction between Divine punishment and Divine chastisement. The distinction is very simple, yet is it often lost sight of.

God’s people can never by any possibility be punished for their sins, for God has already punished them at the Cross. The Lord Jesus, our Blessed Substitute, suffered the full penalty of all our guilt; hence it is written “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.” Neither the justice nor the love of God, will permit Him to again exact payment of what Christ discharged to the full. The difference between punishment and chastisement lies not in the nature of the sufferings of the afflicted. There is a threefold distinction between the two:

First, the character in which God acts. In the former, God acts as Judge; in the latter, as Father. Sentence of punishment is the act of a judge–a penal sentence passed on those charged with guilt. Punishment can never fall upon the child of God in this judicial sense, because his guilt was all transferred to Christ, “Who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree.”

But while the believer’s sins cannot be punished, while the Christian cannot be condemned (Romans 8:3)–yet he may be chastised. The Christian occupies an entirely different position from the non-Christian; he is a member of the Family of God. The relationship which now exists between him and God is that of parent and child; and as a son he must be disciplined for wrongdoing. Folly is bound up in the hearts of all God’s children, and the rod is necessary to rebuke, to subdue, to humble.

The second distinction between Divine punishment and Divine chastisement lies in the recipients of each.

The objects of the former are His enemies
The subjects of the latter are His children

As the Judge of all the earth, God will yet take vengeance on all His foes.
As the Father of His family, God maintains discipline over all His children.

The one is judicial; the other parental.

A third distinction is seen in the design of each.

The one is retributive–the other remedial.

The one flows from His anger–the other from His love.

Divine punishment is never sent for the good of unrepentant sinners–but for the honoring of God’s law and the vindicating of His government.
But Divine chastisement is sent for the well-being of His children: “God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness.” (Hebrews 12:10)

When the believer is smarting under the rod let him not say, “God is now punishing me for my sins!” That can never be! That is most dishonoring to the blood of Christ. God is correcting you in love–not smiting in wrath!

Chastisement proceeds from God’s goodness and faithfulness, and is one of the greatest blessings for which we have to thank Him. Chastisement evidences our Divine sonship. It is designed for our good, to promote our highest interests. Look beyond the rod–to the all-wise hand which wields it!

Some of the saintliest of God’s people, some of the most obedient of His children–have been, and are the greatest sufferers.

Oftentimes, God’s chastenings are corrective. They are sent to empty us of self-sufficiency and self-righteousness. They are given to discover to us hidden transgressions, and to teach us the plague of our own hearts.

Or again, chastisements are sent to strengthen our faith, to raise us to higher levels of experience, to bring us into a condition of usefulness.

Still again, Divine chastisement is sent as a preventative, to keep under pride, to save us from being unduly elated over success in God’s service.

Remember, your afflictions are among the “all things” which work together for good. Learn, then, to look upon trials as proofs of God’s love–purgingpruning, and purifying you.

It is my deepening conviction that what is most needed today, is a wide proclamation of those truths which are the least acceptable to the flesh.

What is needed today, is a scriptural setting forth of the character of God:
His absolute sovereignty,
His ineffable holiness,
His inflexible justice,
His unchanging veracity.

What is needed today, is a scriptural setting forth of the condition of the natural man:
his total depravity,
his spiritual insensibility,
his inveterate hostility to God,
the fact that he is “condemned already” and that
the wrath of a sin-hating God is even now abiding upon him!

What is needed today, is a scriptural setting forth of the alarming danger which sinners are in; the indescribably awful doom which awaits them; the fact that if they follow their present course only a little further–they shall most certainly suffer the due penalty of their iniquities!

What is needed today, is a scriptural setting forth of the nature of that dreadful punishment which awaits the lost:
the awfulness of it,
the hopelessness of it,
the unendurableness of it,
the endlessness of it!
Excepting the Cross of Christ, nothing else so manifests the heinousness of sin–as the doctrine of eternal punishment.

It is just because these truths have been withheld so much from public ministry to the saints–that we now find so many backboneless, sentimental, lop-sided Christians in our assemblies!

A clearer vision of the awe-inspiring attributes of God, would banish much of our levity and irreverence.

A better understanding of our depravity by nature, would humble us and make us see our deep need of using the appointed means of grace.

A facing of the alarming danger of the lost sinner, would cause us to “consider our ways” and make us more diligent to make our “calling and election sure.”

A realization of the unspeakable misery which awaits the lost (and which each of us has fully merited) would immeasurably deepen our gratitude, and bring us to thank God more fervently–that we have been snatched as brands from the burning, and delivered from the wrath to come! It would also make us far more earnest in our prayers, as we supplicate God on behalf of the unsaved.

We have only one life to live–only one! Think of this for a moment.

Here we are in this world of time, making the journey of life. Each day we are farther from the cradle, and nearer to the grave! Solemn thought!

See the mighty concourse of human lives; hear their heavy tread in their onward march.
Some are just beginning life’s journey,
some are midway up the hill,
some have reached the top, and
some are midway down the western slope.

But where are we all going?

Listen, and you will hear but one answer, “Eternity!” Beyond the fading, dying gleams of the sunset of life–lies a boundless, endless ocean called Eternity! There, you and I are daily traveling.

Time is like a great wheel going its round. On and on it goes. Some are stepping on, and some are stepping off. But where are these latter stepping? Into eternity!

See that old man with bent form, snow-white locks, and tottering steps–his has been a long round, but he has reached his end at last.

See the middle-aged man–his round has not been so long, but he must also step off.

See the youth–he has been on only a little while, but he is brought to the stepping-off place. He thought his round would be much longer. He supposed that he was just getting started–when that icy hand was laid upon him and the usher said, “Come, you have made your round, and you must go!”

The infant that gave its first faint cry this morning, may utter its last feeble wail tonight!

And thus they go. But where? Oh, where? ETERNITY!

If you were to start today and ask each person you met the question, “Where are you going?” and, if possible, you were to travel the world over and ask each one of earth’s inhabitants–there could be but one correct answer, “Eternity!”

“Oh, eternity, Long eternity!
Hear the solemn footsteps of eternity!”

Only one life to live! Only one life–and then we must face vast, endless eternity! We shall pass along the pathway of life but once. Every step we take, is a step that can never be taken again.

This world is not a play-ground–or a place to trifle with time
Life is not given us to squander nor fritter away.
To trifle away time, is indeed, to be the greatest of spendthrifts.
If you squander a dollar, you may regain it; but a moment wasted, can never be regained. God gives us all the time we need to accomplish all that He purposes us to accomplish–but He does not give us one moment to trifle away.

We have only one life to live–only one!”So teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

“To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He  has made us accepted in the Beloved.” Ephesians 1:6

We are ever looking for something in self to make ourselves acceptable to God.
We are often sadly cast down and discouraged when we cannot find in ourselves . . .
  that holiness,
  that obedience,
that calm submission to the will of God,
  that serenity of soul,
  that spirituality and heavenly-mindedness,
which we believe to be acceptable in His sight.

Our crooked tempers,
our fretful, peevish minds,
our rebellious thoughts,
our coldness and barrenness,
our alienation from good,
our headlong proneness to evil,
with the daily feeling that we get no better, but rather worse,
make us think that God views us just as we view ourselves. And this brings on great darkness of mind and bondage of spirit, and we seem to lose sight of our acceptance in Christ, and get into the miserable dregs of self–almost ready to quarrel with God because we are so vile, and only get worse as we get older.

Now the more we get into these dregs of self, and the more we keep looking at the dreadful scenes of wreck and ruin which our heart presents to daily view–the farther do we get from the grace of the gospel, and the more do we lose sight of the only ground of our acceptance with God. It is “in the Beloved” that we are accepted, and not for any . . .
  good works,
  good words,
  good thoughts,
  good hearts, or
  good intentions of our own.

If our acceptance with God depended on anything in ourselves, we would have to believe we might be children of God today, and children of the devil tomorrow.

What, then, is to keep us from sinking altogether into despair, without hope or help? Why, a knowledge of our acceptance in the Beloved, independent of everything in us, good or bad.

“You are complete in Him!” Colossians 2:10

“The Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.” John 14:17

The world–that is, the world dead in sin, and the world dead in profession, men destitute of the life and power of God–must have something that it can see. And, as heavenly things can only be seen by heavenly eyes, they cannot receive the things which are invisible.

Now this explains why a religion that presents itself with a degree of beauty and grandeur to the natural eye, will always be received by the world; while a . . .
  spiritual,
  internal,
  heartfelt and
  experimental
religion will always be rejected.

The world can receive a religion that consists of . . .
  forms,
  rites, and
  ceremonies.
These are things seen.

Beautiful buildings,
painted windows,
pealing organs,
melodious choirs,
the pomp and parade of an earthly priesthood,
and a whole apparatus of ‘religious ceremony’,
carry with them something that the natural eye can see and admire. The world receives all this ‘external religion’ because it is suitable to the natural mind and intelligible to their reasoning faculties.

But the . . .
  quiet,
  inward,
  experimental,
  divine religion,
which presents no attractions to the outward eye, but is wrought in the heart by a divine operation–the world cannot receive this, because it presents nothing that the natural eye can rest upon with pleasure, or is adapted to gratify their general idea of what religion is or should be.

Do not marvel then, that worldly professors despise a religion wrought in the soul by the power of God. Do not be surprised if even your own relatives think you are almost insane, when you speak of the consolations of the Spirit, or of the teachings of God in your soul. They cannot receive these things, for they have no experience of them; and being such as are altogether opposed to the carnal mind, they reject them with enmity and scorn.

My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in your weakness.”Ā  2 Corinthians 12:9

Not yourĀ strength,Ā
not yourĀ wisdom,Ā
not yourĀ prayers,Ā
not yourĀ experience;Ā
butĀ “My grace”–My free, My matchless grace:
Ā  independent of all works and efforts,
Ā  independent of everything in the creature,
Ā  flowing wholly and solely, fully and freely, out of the bosom of Jesus to . . .
Ā Ā Ā  the needy,
Ā Ā Ā  the guilty,
Ā Ā Ā  the destitute,
Ā Ā Ā  the undone.

You who are tried in worldly circumstances, who have to endure the hard lot ofĀ poverty–“My grace is sufficient for you.”Ā

You who areĀ tempted, day by day, to say or do that which conscience testifies against–“My grace is sufficient for you.”Ā

You who are harassed withĀ family troublesĀ and afflictions, and are often drawn aside into peevishness and fretfulness–“My grace is sufficient for you.”Ā

OurĀ weakness,Ā helplessness, andĀ inabilityĀ are the very things which draw forth the power, the strength, and the grace of Jesus!

Believer, your case is never beyond the reach of the words–“My grace is sufficient for you!”

The free, the matchless, sovereign grace of God, is sufficient for all His people–in whatever state, or stage, or trouble, or difficulty they may be in!

My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in your weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

“Affliction does not come forth from the dust, neither does trouble spring forth out of the ground!” Job 5:6

“Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.” Deuteronomy 8:5

“I know, O Lord, that Your laws are righteous, and in faithfulness You have afflicted me!” Psalm 119:75

“As many as I love, rebuke and discipline!” Revelation 3:19

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” Hebrews 12:6

“I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for You are the one who has done this!” Psalm 39:9

Dear Reader,
I have come into your sick-room, as it were, and wish to tell you a few things for your comfort and profit.

God has seen fit to stop you in the midst of your busy life, and to lay you aside for a while. It is not by chance that His afflicting hand has fallen upon you. It is not at random that He has chastened you. It may seem to be a mere accident that you are afflicted, and not another. But no; God has done it purposely!

Learn this then–that your present sickness or affliction is from God. It is His doing. He it is, who has brought this present chastisement upon you. Not even a sparrow falls to the ground without our heavenly Father’s ordering, and He prizes His redeemed children more than many sparrows.

Sickness usually comes as a messenger of divine love–it is sent to be a blessing, and may be made, by God’s grace, a very great blessing to the soul. God afflicts His children, because He desires to do them some great good.

The gardener cuts and prunes his tree, to make it grow better, and bear more precious fruit. In the same way, God often uses His sharp knife for some gracious purpose.

The wise and loving father thwarts his child, and sometimes scourges it, for its good. Just so, God uses His chastening rod for the very same reason.

The skillful physician prescribes nauseous medicines to restore his patient’s health. In the same way, God makes us take His bitter medicines, though at the time they are very distasteful to us.

Why does God afflict us?

Because He loves us, and wishes to make us holy as He is holy, and happy as He is happy. For, as it has been well said, “Fiery trials make golden Christians!”

God had one Son without sin–but He never had any son without sorrow.

God chastens purposely and lovingly. Affliction comes from Him; and He afflicts, not as a stern Judge, but as a Father and a Friend!

Before then you go a step further, ask God to convince you of this precious truth: “It is my Father who corrects me–even He who loves me! I will receive this chastisement then from Him, and remember that it is a loving hand that smites. I will kiss the very rod that scourges me. Father, not my will, but may Your will be done!”

A true Christian will receive affliction with submission. It is his Father’s doing, and therefore he quietly submits. It comes from Him, and must therefore be well. He feels that there is a needs-be for it. What a sweet pillow is this, on which to rest his weary head!

“We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose!” Romans 8:28

I will rejoice in Your salvation!” Psalm 9:14

The minds of the wicked find joy from the mostĀ trivialĀ causes–causes which the Spirit of God has taught the Christian to estimate as mere “vanity and vexation of spirit.” To the enlightened mind, the pursuits of this world, and the possessions of the most wealthy, dwindle into insignificance when compared with the value of the soul and its great salvation. If a sinner finds cause for joy in his career ofĀ iniquity, the end of which is damnation–then surely the believer hasĀ an unfailing source of joy and consolation in God’s salvation!

No one can rejoice in salvation, unless heĀ understandsĀ it. There will be a knowledge . . .Ā
of theĀ necessityĀ of salvation, arising from the conviction of one’s fallen, guilty, and condemned state before God;Ā
of theĀ accomplishmentĀ of salvation, by the atoning death, resurrection, and intercession of Jesus Christ, 1 Timothy 1:15;Ā
that when received, salvation willĀ grantĀ . . .Ā
Ā Ā pardonĀ to the guilty,Ā
Ā Ā justificationĀ to the condemned,Ā
Ā Ā libertyĀ to the spiritual captive,Ā
Ā Ā healthĀ to the spiritually sick,Ā
Ā Ā sightĀ to the spiritually blind, and, in short,Ā
Ā  “all spiritual blessingsĀ in heavenly places in Christ Jesus!”

No one can ever rejoice in salvation, unless he has felt hisĀ needĀ of it. The Spirit has opened the eyes of his understanding, and revealed to him his great guilt and need of the Savior. He now knows the plague of his own heart. He now feels his utter helplessness, and perceives the adaptation of the Savior to his state as a perishing sinner.

True salvation alwaysĀ produces joyĀ and rejoicing!Ā “I will rejoice in Your salvation.”
TheĀ sickĀ person rejoices when his disease departs, when the bloom of health again mantles his cheek, etc.Ā
TheĀ debtorĀ rejoices when his debts are discharged, etc.Ā
TheĀ culpritĀ rejoices when reprieved, when he hears the opening of the doors of his prison-house.Ā
And shall not the penitent and believing sinner rejoice? He is saved! Saved from . . .
Ā  theĀ guiltĀ of sin,Ā
Ā  theĀ condemnationĀ of sin,
Ā  theĀ dominionĀ of sin,
Ā  theĀ powerĀ of death,Ā
Ā  theĀ dominionĀ of the grave, andĀ
Ā  theĀ vengeanceĀ of everlasting fire!

This joy springs from the realization of divine mercy, through the sin-atoning death of Christ. This rejoicing is over . . .
Ā  an infinite soul,Ā
Ā  redeemed by an infinite price,Ā
Ā Ā fromĀ an infinite damnation–
toĀ infinite joys, realized first here, and then to be realized fully in an infinite Heaven.Ā

What a possession! What a prospect!Ā “I will rejoice in Your salvation!”Ā

1. The believer rejoices in theĀ originĀ of salvation. It is the result of distinguishing grace–the sovereign goodness and unmerited compassion and favor of God. Man . . .
Ā  did notĀ deserveĀ it,
Ā  had no equitableĀ titleĀ to it,
Ā  neverĀ solicitedĀ it.Ā
God beheld him as an outcast, pitied him, and condescended to save him!Ā

2. The believer rejoices in theĀ procuringĀ of salvation. When he sees his Redeemer in the garden and on the cross, he weeps–but they areĀ tears of joy.Ā There he sees Christ’s astonishing love. There he sees Him bearing his sins and dying in his stead, etc.

3. The believer rejoices in theĀ glorious propertiesĀ of salvation . . .Ā
Ā  theĀ freenessĀ of it, requiring no qualifications nor conditions,
Ā  theĀ purityĀ of it, unto holiness,
Ā  theĀ powerĀ of it, saving him from the guilt, dominion, and pollution of sin,
Ā  theĀ extensivenessĀ of it, investing him with every spiritual blessing,
Ā  theĀ certaintyĀ of it, assuring the soul, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish–ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand.” John 10:28Ā

4. The believer rejoices in the prospectiveĀ consummationĀ of salvation in Heaven. He anticipates with joy . . .
Ā  the full harvest,
Ā  the fruition of hope, and
Ā  the vision of gloryĀ in which faith shall be lost.Ā

“You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand!” Psalm 16:11Ā

People with sore and bruised hearts

People with sore and bruised hearts

(J.R. Miller, “Daily Bible Readings in the Life of Christ” 1890)

“WhenĀ a woman who had lived a sinful lifeĀ in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume . . .” Luke 7:37Ā

It is wonderful howĀ genuine goodnessĀ draws to itself:
Ā  the unfortunate,Ā
Ā  the troubled,
Ā  the friendless,Ā
Ā  the outcast,
Ā  the fallen.Ā

Wherever Jesus went, these classes always found Him out and gathered about Him. It was because He was the true, unselfish friend of all men. They foundĀ sympathyĀ in Him. He wouldĀ listenĀ to their story. Though He was the sinless One, there was yet no air of, “I am holier than you” about Him. He was just as gentle to an outcast sinner, as to a religious Nicodemus. No matter who reached out a hand for help, He was ready to grasp it. One of the truest things ever said of Jesus, was the prophetic word concerning him,Ā “He shall not break a bruised reed!”Ā He always dealt most gently withĀ sore spiritsĀ and withĀ bruised hearts!

Those who want to be useful in this world, must have the same qualities as Jesus. There is a kind of false “holiness” which draws nobody to itself–but rather repels. Genuine holiness, however, wins its way everywhere into men’s hearts. The secret of it all is in livingĀ “not to be served–but to serve;”Ā in considering one’s self not too good to serve the most unworthy of God’s creatures. If we live in this world toĀ beĀ served, we shall be of no use to anyone. But if we live to minister to others, yearning to be of service to everyone we meet–then our life will be of great worth. TheĀ hungry-heartedĀ and theĀ soul-needyĀ will be drawn to us, and God will love to put work into our hands.

We need, too, to train ourselves toĀ exceeding gentlenessĀ in dealing with human souls in their spiritual crises. Many earnest people, in the excess of their zeal–do incalculable harm to those whom they greatly desire to help.Ā People with sore and bruised hearts, usually need loving sympathy and strong, kindly friendship–much more than they need a lecture in theology!

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28Ā

Dead Fish Go With The Flow!

Adapted From Calvin Schlabach

ā€œBE DIFFERENT! Don’t go with the flow!ā€ we are urged. ā€œDon’t follow the crowd! Even a dead fish can float downstream.ā€ It does not take any effort or work on the part of a fish to go with the flow and drift downstEven a dead fish can float. Only a living and healthy fish can swim against the current and travel upstream. In the same way, any weak Christian can live like the world; it takes a vital, healthy faith to enable someone to stand on their convictions, firm against the tide of opinion and the example of unbelievers.

Perhaps we can carry the analogy a bit further. With the polluted condition of many of our modern streams and rivers, it is not only dead fish that float downstream. Trash, industrial waste, and pollutants of one kind or another floats downstream. A fish that travels in that direction finds itself swimming in increasingly fouled and filthy waters. The purest, cleanest waters are found farther upstream nearer the source, where people rarely go. What kind of water would you rather swim in? What kind of life would you rather have? Pure waters are reached only by swimming against the current!

Obviously, we do not want to be one of those wimpy, weak-willed, dead-fish Christians; yet it is so easy to go with the flow and follow the crowd. If we carelessly live like everyone else, we will find ourselves surrounded by the pollution of sin. Is there any way out of this mess? What does it take for us to be able to swim against the current and move farther upstream? I suggest that we need to concentrate on five main points.

Convictions

We will have to know what we believe and then hold to it strongly, for, as it has often been said, those who stand for nothing will fall for anything. We are given the teachings of the apostles and prophets so that we may ā€œno longer be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrineā€ (Ephesians 4:14). We must read our Bibles, accept the principles we find there as our standard of conduct, and then stand firmly on scriptural convictions! How rare it is to see that today! Most of us are so caught up in feelings and tradition, we do not allow truth to shine through.

Courage

The unbelievers will not make it to heaven: ā€œBut for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second deathā€ (Revelation 21:8). When they see that God’s way will require them to leave the false security of doing what all the rest of the world is doing and strike out on their own, their hearts will fail them. Rather than standing against the crowd with the courage of convictions (Romans 8:31), they take the easy way out, turning back to the world, to sin and condemnation. Joshua said, ā€œBe strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord you God is with you wherever you goā€ (1:9).

Strength

We must have power and might to stand firmly against the flood of evil that would swiftly sweep us downstream to our destruction. Paul said, ā€œBe on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strongā€ (1 Corinthians 16:13). We could not successfully withstand temptation and sin that threatens our spiritual well-being by ourselves. Therefore, we are called to ā€œbe strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His mightā€ (Ephesians 6:10). Fortified with power that comes only from God (Ephesians 3:16), we can say with Paul, ā€œI can do all things through Him who strengthens meā€ (Philippians 4:13).

Endurance

For most of us, the Christian race is not a brief sprint to the finish line, but rather it is a long, grueling marathon. Listen to the words of the Hebrew writer, ā€œYou have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised … ā€˜My righteous one shall live by faith; and if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in himā€™ā€ (10:36, 38). It is so sad to see those who have started on the Christian way later give up, forfeiting the race. They did not have the the long-distance endurance to run the race through to the end. Therefore, ā€œlet us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesusā€ (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Heavenly Goals

The reason we want to travel upstream is because we are seeking something better and higher than the careless world around us. We are not trying to be different from the world just for the sake of being different. We are different because we are pursuing different goals. We have to keep these goals continually before us. Paul said, ā€œKeep seeking the things above, where Christ is … Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earthā€ (Colossians 3:1-2). Raise your sights! Don’t follow the foolish crowd!

One of the finest things in a complete Christian character

One of the finest things in a complete Christian character
, isĀ thoughtfulness. It gives awondrous charmĀ to a life. It makes one aĀ blessingĀ wherever he goes. It tempers all his conduct, softening all natural harshness into gentleness, and giving a spirit of kindliness to his every word and act, and to all his bearing.

A thoughtful person does not have to be asked toĀ helpĀ others–he helps, as it were, instinctively. He is ever ready . . .Ā
Ā  to do the obliging thing,Ā
Ā  to say the encouraging word,Ā
Ā  to show an interest in the life of others,Ā
Ā  to perform those countless little kindnesses which so brighten the common pathway.Ā

In much home-life, there is a lack of thoughtfulness shown. Not always is the speech gentle–sometimes it is sharp and bitter, even rude. Without being aware of it, many of us are miserably selfish in our life among others. We practically forget that there are any other people, or that we ought to make any sacrifices, or practice any self-denials, for their sake.Ā

Thoughtfulness will seek always to say kindly words, never words that will give pain–but ever those that will give pleasure. We have no right, for the sake of saying a bright thing, to let loose a shaft, however polished, that will make a loving heart bleed!

We all know in our own experience, the value of sincere and ChristlyĀ thoughtfulness. We do not like to come in contact with thoughtless people. We know well how it hurts and how unbeautiful, how unchristian, it seems when we see it in another–and whenĀ ourĀ heart is the one that suffers from its harsh, rude impact. We all long for thoughtfulness in others; our hearts hunger and thirst for it. It is bread and wine to us.

What we long for in others in their relation to us, we should be ready to give to them. What in others hurts us, gives us pain–we ought to avoid in our contact with others.Ā Thoughtfulness is one of the finest, ripest fruits of Christian love–and all who would be like the Master must seek to learn this lesson and wear this grace.

Ā My Thoughts šŸ’Ā

is your heart causing aĀ ā€˜draft’ over people?
Are you the ice cold draft that puts a chill into people even before you meet? If someone were to say your name does it make them sigh and say “Oh no I haven’t got the energy.” Or does your name bring a smile to their face as they can’t wait to meet up again.Ā
Ā
Or…Are you a draft project?
Not quite finished or ready to be publishedĀ yet, a broken toy forgotten on a shelf complaining because you feel your days are over. Are you sat waiting to bury your dead? waiting for your inheritance which you think will heal you. Then, and only then you decide to let Jesus walk alongside you…But NEVER in front!
Ā
Or…Do you create a backdraft?
Are you opening doors you know you shouldn’t be opening? Are you letting the flames consume you and pollute your mind??
Ā
Or…are you draftin’?Ā
Are you letting Jesus lead?Ā Are you following really close behind as he pulls you along, while leaving you with the energy to help others and become your own draft?Ā šŸ™Ā šŸ˜€Ā

From The Archives: The Finish Line

Hi all…This is my first post from my ā€˜From The Archives’ series, i hope you enjoy reading some of theĀ classics, lol?! šŸ˜€Ā

The Finish Line…

As a blind gamer, i was excited to be recommended(by my brother) a brand new racing game called ā€œProject Carsā€ for the PS4. I’m able to attempt to play a few racing games, If they include Grand Prix tracks, i can often remember each corner from my sighted gaming days, playing F1 97 etc.Ā

When i sat down to play for 15 minutes last night, i was surprised to be taught a lesson on being over zealous, while lacking wisdom! šŸ™‚

A close up photo of the amazing Ford Capri Touring Car

⇧ Screenshot of my 1980 Capri (Group 5 – Team Zakspeed) ⇧

I chose the rather extreme Capri to drive and chose a familiar track. After leaving the pits i span off on nearly every corner as my tyres were cold and not up to race temperatures. An influx of thoughts filled my mind,….

Over Zealous…

It reminded me of when i first became a Christian and first had revelation of the Truth when reading the Bible. I couldn’t believe what i was reading, and how it described me…yes me! I then did what normally happens, and become over zealous like a screaming twin turbo engine and had to tell everyone, and point out the right and wrongs with everything and everyone around me!Ā

I was making a lot of noise and using a lot of power and energy, Ā but was lacking something vital, i failed to slowly warm up the tyres of Godly Wisdom!

As we mature, and grow in step with the Holy Spirit, we are given all we need to finish the race. And when we get the balance right, we can stay on track until the end, and if our tyres stay hot, even the storms won’t be able to slow us down! šŸ™‚

Making Doughnuts…

photo of a racing sierra cosworth with smoking tyres doing doughnuts at Donington race track

⇧ Screenshot of my 1988 Sierra RS500 Cosworth (Group A) ⇧

After selecting ā€œDoningtonā€, my home town track in Derby, i decided to take the Sierra Cosworth for a ride. I stopped to make some doughnuts, and thought ā€œHere we go again, all that power and energy…and i’m just going round in circlesā€.

šŸ™Ā I want to thank God for not leaving us in the pits! But instead HeĀ empowers Ā instructs and steers us towards the finish line!Ā šŸ˜€Ā

ā˜€ļø #38 The Blind Sightseers “Escape The Lockdown” With Distant Memories: “Itea, Greece”šŸ‡¬šŸ‡·(2017)

The Blind Sightseers logo

Hi friends and welcome to Day 38 of this monumental, inconceivable and definitely memorable blind sightseers tour….!Ā

Itea logo

Good morning friends! (Καλημέρα φίλοι)Ā šŸ˜€ Ā

Let’s see where the ā€˜Blind Sightseers’ are going today… Ā

Ā You’ll visit the glorious mountain setting for this monastery with outstanding Byzantine mosaics. Osias Loukas (Holy Luke) settled here in the early 10th.century and the church was built over his grave around 963 AD. It is the earliest extant domed-octagon church, and is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

On the dockā€¦šŸ›³ Ā

The Thomson excursion team didn’t disappoint again and were waiting for us as we stepped off the ship. The kind man (sorry forgot his name) walked us to the correct coach as they have booked us the front 2 seats again. He also climbed aboard and said ā€œI’m coming on this tour too and i can keep an eye on you both so you don’t get lost or have any disastersā€. ā€œFantasticā€ i said to Sarah as it makes us less stressed knowing there is one of the excursion team (and not just the local guide) on the trip with us.

On the coach…🚌

ā€œWow…There are loads of goats in a field. Steve if you could see you’d really like this, lol!ā€ 🤣 Ā

lots of goats in a field of yellow grass

Yay we’ve arrived…

As the monastery was set in the hills there was not much to see as we stepped off the coach. The guide then led us to the top of the steps that circled round and down to the monastery.

ā€œSteve we have lots of long steps going down, i’ll let you know when the next one is approachingā€ Thank you my loveā€ i said stepping down the first step. Sarah continued ā€œStep down now…then 1, 2 , 3 flat steps and then step downā€ I obviously have to slow down because if i slip or fall just once i could twist or snap my ankle (especially with my weight, lol). ā€œ1,2, step down, 1, 2, 3 step downā€ isn’t my wife amazing?!Ā

There must have been about 2,000 steps as it took ages, but we wer’nt last and the Thomson man walked with us all of the way, i told you he was a kind man! šŸ˜€

At the bottom of the steps…Ā

Reaching the bottom of the steps without tripping or slipping once (thanks to my amazing guide Sarah) there was a small cafe, shop, monastery and a museum. ā€œWow you’d neve guess all of this was here when looking from the topā€ i said whilst looking at this beautiful place. 😲 Ā

IMG 5858

The guide said we have about 10 minutes before we can go inside the church. It was lovely in the courtyard and looking over the valley down below.

Rolling hills and olive rees

olive trees and rolling hills taken under a over hanging tree

As i was taking the 2 photos above i knew i couldn’t get the whole landscape in 1 photo…But i know someone who can!!!Ā

ā˜¢ļø HEALTH WARNING…You’ve guessed it…A stupendously sublime Sarah panorama.

Breathtaking panorama of the rolling hills and olive trees

Then as we were looking out (arm around each other) soaking up the hot sun, the Thompson man walked up behind us and asked if we’d like a photo together? ā€œWow yes pleaseā€. Another photo of me and Sarah i’ll cherishā€¦šŸ˜€ Ā

Me and Sarah with arms around each other and the rolling hills of olive trees etc behind us

The church…šŸ’’

The guide said we had to wait for the monks to disappear as they don’t want to be around us, so they have to leave and not be seen. ā€œThat’s evangelismā€ i said as the guide was passing Sarah an ankle length skirt. ā€œYou have to put this on if you want to go insideā€.

Entrance to the church

As we walked inside the church it was a lot cooler (i was thankful for that) and it also had a peaceful atmosphere. The knowledgable guide told us all about the architectureĀ of the church and the golden mosaics of the saints and apostles. I didn’t start a discussion on the Iconoclastic Controversies…I just enjoyed listening to the guide whilst Sarah captured a couple of photos. šŸ˜€Ā

Inside and much darker image of the iside arches and roof

Ā Back in the courtyard…

There was a little shop where you can buy local honey, olive oil and some other lovely souvenirs. Sarah bought some honey (we thought it would be good for hypo’s) and olive oil for us to try on salads (Oopps, i accidentally said salads…I meant steak, lol) when we get home. 🤣 Ā

The queue was pretty long in the shop so unfortunately we didn’t have time to have a proper Greek coffee in the cafe. We met back up with the group and headed towards the mighty steps.

I am much better walking up steps as the step casts a shadow and i can just make out the contrast and figure out where the steps are…And it’s much easier to fall upwards than fall down and keep rolling head over heals until you’re left in a crumpled, crushed and broken mess at the bottom…Left to exsanguinate as your life slowly slipps away, one blood drop at a time!Ā šŸ¤•

Returning to the dock..šŸ›³ Ā

The coach dropped us back right near the dock and as the excursion was only a short one…We had time to explore a little of the town, yay!Ā

Oh did i mention it was burning hot?!Ā ā˜€ļø Ā

iPhone weather app showing Itea, Greece at 36°C

I know for most of you (and especially Sarah) that 36° isn’t that hot…But for me who wears cargo shorts all year round (even through the winter) it is burning. ā˜€ļø Ā

We started walking and noticed their wasn’t many people around, as not many places were open. So we turned back and headed up the other street. We found a huge cafe/restaurant and headed inside. The place was empty but we could hear a coffee machine and some pots in the back rattling. ā€œI’m not sure where we can order from? And i’m not sure if this place is open?ā€ Sarah said whilst trying to find anyone at all. We walked back outside and Sarah said ā€œThere is a woman serving coffee to those people right over there (on the dock overlooking the sea about 100 metres away) but it’s much too far to be part of this cafeā€.

We walked around a little further and made sure there were no other shops in the area, then we headed back to the dock to get a table and wait for the barista. ā˜• She did walk all the way back to the cafe we’d just been in to get the coffees…Wow i’d collapse of heat exhaustion. šŸ¤•Ā

The view of the sea and dock from the coffee shop seating area...I am right in the bottom right hand corner of the shot

Wow…This was the view we had from our table! We had plenty of time to just chill (burn) and relax and just soak in the view. Sarah and i love being beside the sea either like this or on a beach, as we live in a super green area near trees, village greens and conservation areas…So we love having holidays with sea and sand! šŸ˜€ ā˜€ļøĀ

Yesterday we had our first ā€˜Fredo Cappuccino’ in the cafe in Corinth, so when the barista placed 2 of them down in front of us we both grinned. šŸ˜€ ā€œWowā€ we both said ā€œthis is the best one so farā€ i said whilst trying not to drink it all in one go! We had about 2 hours before we needed to get back onto the ship, so we ordered 2 more fredo Ā cappuccinos. After a while i asked to order 1 more for me and the barista said ā€œNo you’ve had 2 already and you’re not having a 3rdā€ i thought she was joking until i tried asking again! 😭 Ā

After the amazing coffees we decided to have a quick walk up and down the empty dock before heading back on board.Ā

Sarah taking a panorama of the dock area

Ā Back on the ship..šŸ›³

We had time to refresh and change out of our sweaty clothes and make our way out on deck for a couple more shots before we leave the port. Ā

Sarah's panorama taken from the ship with the island in the background and the ship in the right hand side

Wow…After another stunning Sarah panorama, i thought i’d show you my new t-shirt…It’s archangel Michael fighting the war in heaven fromĀ Revelation 12:7-9Ā (for the record…I don’tĀ worship God through the use of icons, statues, mosaics or my t-shirt. There is oneĀ mediator between man and God…The Lord Jesus Christ).

Me atood on the deck with my new shirt on with arch angel Michael fighting Satan

We had a lovely evening meal again and when we returned to our cabin…Yay a fantastic towel elephant! 🐘 šŸ˜€ Ā

Wow what another interesting, beautiful and Ā scorching day, i hope you enjoyed it as much as us?! See you tomorrow for the day Sarah has been waiting patiently for! šŸ˜€ ā˜€ļø Ā

ā˜€ļø #37 The Blind Sightseers “Escape The Lockdown” With Distant Memories: “Corinth, Greece”šŸ‡¬šŸ‡·(2017)

The Blind Sightseers logo

Ā HiĀ friends and welcome to Day 37 of this monumental, inconceivable and definitely memorable blind sightseers tour….!

Corinth logo

Me stood on the right with my arms out stretched and waving as the Thomson Spirit shit covers the whole background

Good morning friends! (Καλημέρα φίλοι)šŸ˜€ Ā

I love the fact that we’ve just sailed to Corinth on the ā€˜Spirit’ and we’re now going on a trip along the Corinth canal, then to walk around ancient Corinth in the historic footsteps of the Apostle Paul. To say i was excited is an understatement! šŸ™ 😲 Ā

But firstā€¦ā˜€ļø Ā

I’m not good in the sun but Sarah comes alive in the scorching hot weather. So i sloshed on my sun cream as it was already 36 degrees outside (ouch) I’ve also bought myself a ā€˜Tactical Sun Hat’ to try and keep myself cooler in the sun and provide a little shade with the wide rim…It worked really well but i was still dripping like a candle in a Salvador Dali painting! 🤣 Ā

Corinth canal…

Get ready to be impressed. The Corinth Canal marries up the Gulf of Corinth in the northwest with the Saronic Gulf in the southeast. It’s 3.9 miles long and its width varies from 69 feet at the bottom to 82 feet at the water’s surface. Before it was built, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic Sea had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese, adding another 185 miles to their journey. On this fascinating tour you’ll drive to Isthmia, around 1 hr’s drive, where a boat will be waiting to whisk you off. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views as you sail through this famous canal. Along the way, your guide will tell you interesting facts about the way it was built.

Ā We stepped of the air conditioned coach and just as i said ā€œArgghh now that’s hotā€ Sarah said ā€œWow that’s better, it was freezing on that coachā€ we followed the group to the boat. ā˜€ļø Ā

After Sarah excellently guided me onto the boat, we took our seats. The whole trip was just stunning and we were blown away by the walls of the canal and the sheer size of it. The guide was telling us all about the history etc over the loud speakers (my fave part as i can’t see the scenery until i get home and really zoom in for a blurry look). I do listen and hear Sarah’s detailed descriptions of the landscapes and any other points of interest. I also take in the other people around me and their reactions too.Ā

Another photo taken from the front of the boat looking up the canal with tall walls either side and a bridge on top crossing over.

ā˜¢ļø HEALTH WARNING… Ā

Now for a blistering Sarah panorama! Ā

A Sarah Panorama of the end of the canal where it expands into the vastness of the sea, with land touching each side

Another Sarah panorama with the sea and land stretching from end to end with rolling hills and mountains in the background

After doing a 180˚ turn we headed back down the canal, fantastic! šŸ˜€ Ā Ā

Me stood right at the rear of the boat with the beautiful Corinth canal in the background

Ā Ancient Corinth…

You’ll now take a short drive to ancient Corinth, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the ruins of the “Agora” marketplace as well as the Temples of Apollo and Aphrodite.

We shot off the coach and followed the guide closely from the front, the path was all uphill and did i mention it was scorching hot?!Ā ā˜€ļø I kept saying to SarahĀ ā€œWow the Apostle Paul actually came here!ā€ and after about the 10th time…We’d reached the top.

Me stood in front of the ancient Temple of Apollo wearing my tactical sun hat

Sarah and the Temple of Apollo

Temple of Apollo

After a brief history lesson all about the temples and the culture as it was back in the day, we headed along another hot dusty path and ended up at the Synagogue. ā€œWowā€ i said ā€œPaul would’ve visited this actual Synagogue several times…It’s simply amazing that i’m standing in biblical historyā€.Ā

Upon leaving the synagogue the guide stopped and pointed to an ancient hebrew marking on the wall. Sarah quickly took a photo of it to share. I continued ā€œWow, Paul may have walked under this very arch, wow!ā€ 😲

A remain of the Jewish Synagogue where the Apostle Paul teached and preached

The Agora…

Moving further down and heading towards the agora, the sound of the cicadas were deafening, they were almost drowning out the voice of the guide…It sounded like i was walking around with a massive bee hive stuck on my head but less sticky and much less painful! 🤣 Ā

ā€œWow…the beema Ā seatā€ i said whilst trying to get excited but actually about to collapse due to heat exhaustion. ā€œThe agora! This is where the Apostle Paul would’ve been making tents..No way!ā€ i kept going ā€œDid you know Paul stayed in Corinth for about 18 months and he would’ve have frequently visited and worked around here!ā€ Sarah replied ā€œYes i know Steve it’s incredible, but we’re getting left behind as you keep stopping and making wow noises, lol!ā€ 🤣 Ā

ā€œSarah could you take some photos of me in the Agora and in front of the beema seat? I’d love to have a photo as a keep sake…Oh and have i mentioned that the Apostle Paul would’ve been around here?!ā€. Sarah puts up with a lot! 🤣 Ā Ā

Me and the Agora

The cicadas were still singing their thunderous lament as we walked deeper into the Agora. The guide stopped to show us the ruins and described how it would have looked and what would be happening back in classical times. Ā

Ā And then…

ā˜¢ļø HEALTH WARNING…Ā

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better…Sarah managed to fit the whole place in one monumental panorama! Ā

A Fantastic Panorama taken by Sarah of the Agora

At this point i was so exhausted, head and shoulders stooped forward and my mouth was dry and frothing. I managed a slow shuffle back to the air conditioned coach. Sarah said ā€œOh it’s freezing on here!Ā

It still blows me away when i think of this excursion to ancient Corinth and how we were actually there. 😲

Back at the shipā€¦šŸ›³ Ā

After freshening up back in the cabin, we still had a few hours before the ship left port. We’ve found that if the excursion leaves us with a few hours to spare we can use the ship as the starting reference and go and explore the town nearest to the dock (any further and we’ll get lost). This makes for a full day as we can go on the excursion around the island and then visit local shops and markets around the dock area…Yay! šŸ˜€Ā

Wow…Did i mention it was hot! ā˜€ļø 😰

iPhone weather app showing Corinth at 36° and sunny

ā€œYay…Steve a beach!ā€ Sarah shouts as we step out of the dock, she continues ā€œNo way, holidays don’t start until i’ve put my feet on the sand…Come on!ā€ I was just about to protest (as i’d left my beach shoes in the cabin) when Sarah dragged (i mean guided) me onto the powdery sand.Ā

The boiling hot sun, the powdery white sand and the gentle touch of the sea rolling over Sarah’s feet educed a wonderful smile. šŸ˜€ Ā

My new Microfibre towel…

We were now wet, frazzled and covered in sand and we walked for a while before we found a bench under a large tree. ā€œYes…Here you goā€ is said as i unclipped my new microfibre hand towel from my carabiner loop on my BDU (Battle Dress Uniform) shorts. I bought this little towel just before this cruise as i wanted to be more prepared as we learn a little more what we need from each holiday…And this time it worked beautifully! šŸ˜€ Ā

After a while we were both sand free, dry and ready for a cold drink. We walked down a few streets then Sarah said ā€œSteve, i think this looks like a cafe? I wonder if they do iced coffees?ā€ ā€œI hope soā€ i said feeling like a pulsing nuclear reactor.Ā

They did the best iced coffee (Freddo Cappuccino) and even a sugar free one for Sarah…Ā

Sarah enjoying an iced Cappaccino outside the Cafe in Corinth

As we were sitting outside drinking our amazing coffees…The man we’d met at the Captains table last night walked past and said hello. ā€œWowā€ i said to Sarah after a brief chat with the man, ā€œWe’re even making friends and it’s only the first day off the shipā€.Ā

Sadly it’s now time to return back to the ship…

Me stood in the middle of the road with buildings either side in Corinth

As we were walking towards the ship and the dock was empty…We stopped for a few photos…Ā

Sarah stood in front of the Thomson Spirit shipwith both arms in the air

Then…

As we were taking lots of photos, another nice person from our ship walked up behind us and asked if we’d like a photo together?! ā€œOh yes please that would be so kind of youā€ i said as i passed her my phone. šŸ˜€ Ā

Back on shipā€¦šŸ›³Ā

We’d had a fantastic day and had lots to talk about with Ā the people sat around our table at the evening meal. It’s lovely to hear other peoples stories from what they had done throughout the day, and to hear the adventures from the other excursions.

Finally…Just when you think the day is over, we have another fantastic folded creature.

Hi all, after reading and updating ā€œMy Testimonyā€ this morning…I realised i hadn’t shared it for years on here! I know lots of you have read it and left me some proper humbling comments that have just left me in tears(including this morning after i went through a lot of them again). Ā

If someone like me can be transformed by the reality and power of the Gospel, i know i need to share and make as many people aware of this amazing news of hope…As Jesus is the Ā Way, the Truth and the Life and no-one gets to Ā the Father but by Him. He’s the forgiver of Sins, breaker of chains, and the only Salvation! šŸ™ šŸ˜€Ā

With all of the personal stories, news reports of suicide and ā€œBlue Mondayā€ coming up next week…I just wanted to remind people that Jesus has the “Good Newsā€. I know this as it has happened to me and i want toĀ shareĀ it with everyone! šŸ˜€Ā

The Glorious Incarnation Logo

Ā The Advent Virus

Anonymous via email

WARNING……WARNING: ADVENT VIRUS

Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of The Advent Virus:

  1. A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
  2. An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
  3. A loss of interest in judging other people.
  4. A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
  5. A loss of interest in conflict.
  6. A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)
  7. Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
  8. Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
  9. Frequent attacks of smiling.
  10. An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
  11. An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Please send this warning out to all your friends. This virus can and has affected many systems. Some systems have been completely cleaned out because of it.

šŸŽ„ #18 The Glorious Incarnation ~ Humility

The Glorious Incarnation Logo

Ā ā€œHe [Jesus] was born in a barn to show what God thinks of human pride, of human ambition, of human loftiness, of human hardness…of those who turn to religion only because of what they think it can do for them…of those who always insist on having a place at the high table and are miserable when others are put before them…of those personal jealousies and those family feuds that mar the fellowship with God.ā€

[Handel H. Brown]

Ā

šŸŽ„ #4 The Glorious Incarnation ~ God With Us

The Glorious Incarnation Logo

Ā If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three words, these would be the words: ā€œGod with us.ā€ We tend to focus our attention at Christmas on the infancy of Christ. The greater truth of the holiday is His deity. More astonishing than a baby in the manger is the truth that this promised baby is the omnipotent Creator of the heavens and the earth!

John MacArthur

Ā

šŸŽ„ #1 The Glorious Incarnation ~ Your Gift

The Glorious Incarnation Logo

Heavenly Father,Ā We think we are ready for Christmas …Not because we have read the pages of the Bible, but because we have read our credit card statements,Ā And they say that we have left no stone unturned, and no gift unbought, if still unpaid for.Ā We stand ready to stagger under the weight of Christmas,Ā To eat and drink far too much,Ā To party with the best of them,Ā And to worry all the time that we’ve forgotten something.Ā And we’ll do it all, not always because we want to, but because everyone else is doing it, and we’ll go along for the ride.

Somewhere in all of this, Father, please feel free to stop us.Ā Any place, any time, just stop us in our tracks.Ā Stop us, grab our attention, and then place your gift in our hands where we can see it,Ā And in our hearts where we can feel it.Ā The gift of knowing that, a little over two thousand years ago, you stepped into the history of this world and placed yourself in a manger in a dirty backstreet stable,Ā And called yourself a Christ-Child. It was then that we could see you and understand you as we had never been able to do before: As Creator, as Spirit, and as a man who would walk unerringly towards a Cross.

Everything else, all the food, the fun, the partying, none of it matters, and none of it has any point at all, unless we grasp this simple, beautiful gift and press it close to our hearts and keep it there…..….. that we live with you, that we are one with you, Our Lord Immanuel.

What else is there to say?

Except thank you, Amen.

#28 āœž 28 Motives to Love Jesus!

Red Love logo with reflectionĀ

28 Motives to Love Jesus!

(Thomas Doolittle, “Love to Christ Necessary to Escape the Curse at His Coming!” 1693)

#28. Will not love to Jesus best help us to PERSEVERE in the Christian race?Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Ā

When trials, suffering and persecution come, only those who truly love Jesus will be able to endure.

Ā

CONCLUSIONĀ

What shall I say to advance Jesus in your esteem, that you might love Him? Is He not aĀ comprehensiveĀ good? Is He not eminentlyĀ all? There is no goodness in the creature, but it is formally, or virtually, in Jesus.Ā

Is there wisdom in the creature? There is more in Jesus.Ā
Is thereĀ beautyĀ orĀ powerĀ in the creature? There is much more in Jesus.Ā

“For it pleased the Father, that in Him shouldĀ all fullnessĀ dwell.” Jesus is “fullĀ of grace and truth.” This is the One whom I beg you to love. This is He who isĀ altogether lovely and desirable.Ā

Consider now, I plead with you–can you ever imagine a better offer than Jesus? Can you find a better match for your soul? Can you say all this, or any one of all these things–concerning the objects you have loved previous to Jesus?

Oh then say, “I never understood the loveliness of Christ before this! How hasĀ sinĀ fooled me! How has theĀ worldĀ bewitched me! How has myĀ foolish wicked heartĀ deceived me–that I have lavished my love upon the creature and sin–when there was a Christ to love! Such a Christ to love! Such a good as is not to be found in all the world! Now He alone shall have my heart, my love–myĀ all!”

#27. Is not love to Jesus the best help against the TEMPTATIONS of Satan?Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

Is not Satan your enemy? Is not your heart sometimes anxious to yield to him? But love to Jesus would garrison your hearts, fortify your souls, and make you courageous and resolute against all the batteries of Satan and the assaults of sin. It would make you watchful against the allurements and amusements of the world, so that you would say, “Shall I offend my dearest Lord? Shall I displease Him who has done me such good, such everlasting good? Oh! how can I do this great evil, and sin against Him whom I love!” Do you not find that love forbids, and exceedingly restrains–from grieving, offending or wronging the one whom you entirely love?Ā

#26. Is not love to Jesus the most universally NECESSARY love?Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

One man loves one thing, and a second another, and a third another. But there is no necessity that all men should love any one thing–except for Jesus, and things pertaining to our having and enjoying Him. Love to Jesus is absolutely necessary for poor and rich, for great and small, for noble and low-born, for learned and unlearned, for slave and free.Ā

#25. Is not love to Jesus the most PROFITABLE love?Ā Ā  Ā  Ā

“What is a man profited, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” By loving Jesus you shall have such a gain that no man can value, that no mind can estimate, that no mathematician, by all his numbers and figures, can compute–even . . .Ā  pardon of innumerable sins,Ā Ā  the favor of an infinite and holy God,Ā Ā  deliverance from inconceivable torments,Ā Ā  possession of endless bliss, andĀ Ā  more than I, or any man, can describe or comprehend!Ā

#24. You should never have any cause or reason to be ashamed to love Jesus.Ā Ā  Ā

Is not the time coming, and the day hastening, when . . .Ā  covetous men shall be ashamed of loving the world,Ā Ā  and voluptuous men ashamed of loving their pleasures,Ā Ā  and ambitious men ashamed of loving their honors?Ā For is it not a horrid shame, that a rational creature should be so debased as to love sin which is most loathsome, and not to love Jesus who is most lovely? That he should love deformity, and not beauty?

Oh shame, shame! It is a shame that sin should have such esteem, and Jesus such great contempt put upon Him. But shame shall before long confound these now shameless wretches, when they shall cry out, “We are ashamed that we loved filthy lucre, and not Jesus–that we loved houses, lands, lusts, and not Jesus. This is the confusion of our faces, and shame covers us–that we should be so foolish, and so blind, that we had not sense, nor reason, to distinguish between sin, which is the greatest and most odious evil–and Jesus who is the greatest and most lovely good.”Ā

But the time will never come, the day will never be–that a gracious soul shall be ashamed of his sincere love to Jesus Christ.Ā

#23. Is it not great condescension in Jesus, that He will so kindly accept your love?Ā Ā

Shall one so great, accept of the love of one so inferior?Ā Shall one so holy, accept the love of one that is so sinful?Ā Shall one so glorious, accept the love of one so vile?Ā Do great men value the love of beggars?Ā Do princes value the love of peasants?Ā Would a man of noble birth and wealth, marry a diseased and deformed woman clothed in rags?Ā
I think, considering who Jesus is, and who you are–that you should say, “If Jesus will allow me, I will love Him.” Allow you! Not only so, but He gives you a command to love Him, and that upon pain and peril of everlasting damnation!Ā
