The Holy Spirit
(James Smith, “The Way of Salvation Set Forth”)
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:6ย
The Holy Spiritย is theย authorย of the great work ofย regeneration. He takes up His abode in the renewed heart, as His temple. He dwells in us, and shall be with us. Jesus does allย forย us, in our justification; and the Holy Spirit does allย inย us, for our sanctification.ย
The Holy Spirit is the source of all holy desires, consistent purposes and good works. There is no good thing in us, but what He produces. He dwells within us as the Teacher, the Comforter and the Advocate of the soul. He leads us . . .
ย into truth,
ย against Satan,
ย and to labor for God.ย
He . . .
warns us of evil,
directs us to Jesus, and
applies the blessings of salvation to our souls.ย
He is in us as a well of water springing up into everlasting life.ย
Without the Holy Spirit there is not, there cannot be, genuine religion; for He is its author, guardian, and guide.
To Him we are indebted . . .
ย for every goodย desire,
ย for every holyย thought,
ย for every goodย word, and
ย for every fruitfulย work.
He works in us to will and to do of His own good pleasure.ย
Every tear of penitence,ย
every contrite sigh,ย
every fervent prayer,ย
every ray of spiritual light,ย
every holy emotion toward God
–is from the Holy Spirit.ย
If He left us–ourย gracesย would soon wither, fade and die.ย
When we grieve Him . . .
ย our comforts decline,ย
ย our evidences are beclouded,ย
ย and our hands wax feeble.ย
But . . .
if weย sowย to the Spirit,
if weย walkย in the Spirit,
if weย aimย in all things to please Him–then . . .
ย our souls are vigorous,
ย our graces are lively, andย
ย we are enabled to find our joy in God.ย
