The only effectual reformer of the world!

(Samuel Davies, “Serious Reflections on WAR” 1757)

“When He comes–He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment!” John 16:8

The Holy Spirit isĀ the only effectual reformer of the world!Ā If He is absent–
Ā Ā legislatorsĀ may make laws against crime;Ā 
Ā Ā philosophersĀ may reason against vice;Ā 
Ā Ā ministersĀ may preach against sin;Ā 
Ā Ā conscienceĀ may remonstrate against evil;
Ā  theĀ divine lawĀ may prescribe, and threaten Hell;Ā 
Ā  theĀ gospelĀ may invite, and allure to Heaven;Ā 
but all will be in vain!

The strongest arguments, the most melting entreaties, the most alarming denunciations from God and man, enforced with the highest authority, or the most compassionate tears–all will have no effect–all will not effectually reclaim one sinner, nor gain one sincere convert to righteousness!Ā 

Paul, Apollos, and Peter, with all their apostolic abilities, can do nothing, without the Holy Spirit. Paul may plant the seed–and Apollos may water it; but God alone can make it grow! “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything–but only God, who makes things grow!” 1 Corinthians 3:6, 7

Never will peace and harmony be established in thisĀ jangling world–until thisĀ Divine AgentĀ takes the work in hand.

It is He alone, who can melt down the obstinate hearts of men into love and peace!Ā 

It is He alone, who can soften their rugged and savage tempers, and transform them into mutual benevolence!Ā 

It is He alone–who can quench those lusts that set the world on fire, and implant the opposite virtues and graces. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, are mentioned by Paul, as theĀ fruit of the Spirit, because the Spirit alone is the author of them. And if these dispositions were predominant in the world–what a serene, calm, peaceful region would it be,Ā undisturbed with the hurricanes of human passions!

Oh, how much do we need the influence of the blessed Spirit . . .
Ā  to break the heart of stone,
Ā  to enlighten the dark mind, and
Ā  to comfort the desponding soul!

Viewing man as a fallen, sinful creature–the gospel isĀ theĀ onlyĀ system adapted to his case!Ā Ā 
The more he contemplates it, the more he perceives its precious adaptation to his dreadful state.Ā 
The gospel is . . .
Ā  light, for the darkness of his reason;Ā 
Ā  peace, for the tumult of his conscience;Ā 
Ā  joy, for the anguish of his mind;Ā 
Ā  hope, for the gloom of his despair.Ā 

Is he guilty? The gospel presents . . .
Ā  an all-sufficient Savior,
Ā  an all-atoning sacrifice,
Ā  and an all-forgiving God.Ā 

Is he impure? The gospel opens up for him a fountain for sin and for uncleanness–a hallowed flood supplied from the Redeemer’s cross, where the vilest sinner may wash from his heinous pollution.Ā 

Is he alienated from God–at an infinite distance from the only source of happiness and forgiveness? The gospel is a medium of approach, a way of access to the thrice holy God. Here the Alpine mountains of his guilt are leveled to the dust. Here the prodigal returns, is freely received, fully forgiven, elevated to a place in his heavenly Father’s family, and never lost from his heavenly Father’s heart.Ā 

Is he the victim of ignorance and error? Here he receives the lessons of a heavenly prophet–theĀ SpiritĀ of God becomes his kind instructor. Here the untutored savage is made wiser than the learned sage, “wise unto salvation!”

Does he feel himself the subject of passions that lead him continually astray from God?Ā 
The same Spirit becomes the inhabitant of his bosom . . .
Ā  to subdue his passions,Ā 
Ā  to curb his lusts,Ā 
Ā  to control his will, andĀ 
Ā  to sanctify the nature He has first renewed, and which shall finally be glorified with Christ.Ā 

In every point of view, the gospel meets his case!

Is he a sinner? The gospel offers pardon!

Is he a debtor? The gospel grants him full payment of his dept!Ā 

Is he a captive to sin and Satan? The gospel gives him liberty.Ā 

Is he fallen into utter depravity? It elevates him to God’s throne, and constitutes him “a king and a priest unto God.”Ā 

Is he thirsty? The gospel is a river of life.Ā 

Is he weary? It is a sweet repose.Ā 

Is he ignorant? The gospel is a divine instructor.Ā 

Is he spiritually diseased? It is immortal health and vigor to his soul.Ā 

Is he dying? The gospel is eternal life.Ā 

Yes, in the gospel . . .
Ā  the law is fulfilled,
Ā  justice is atoned, and
Ā  the divine perfections are harmonized in man’s redemption.

My heart feels for you, my dear friend, in your deep, deep trial. This present world is a world of sadness; but when we think of that glorious world which is to come, into which sorrow never enters, and how soon we may be there–we may well “rejoice in tribulation.” Our “light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory!”Ā 

In all your sorrows, pour out your heart to the Man of sorrows. He will bow down His ear and listen to all that you say. He will eitherĀ removeĀ orĀ moderateĀ your trial, or give youĀ strengthĀ to bear it. Even this bitter draught He has given you to drink shall result both in your good and His glory.Ā 

Remember, not a sparrow falls upon the ground without His guidance, and that the very hairs of your head are all numbered. How much more hasĀ this trying event been ordered and arranged by Him who loves you!Ā Infinite wisdom has appointed the whole!Ā Never doubt that He loves you, when He most deeply afflicts.Ā 

May He lift up upon you the light of His countenance, drawing you nearer to Himself, that you may see what a tender, loving heart He has for you, andĀ how deeply and tenderly and considerately He cares for you–as if there were not another poor sorrowful one to care for on the face of the whole earth!

Pray against a thirst forĀ light and trifling reading, that strange and sinful inconsistency of so many, the certain tendency of which is to starve the life of God in the soul, to engender a distaste for spiritual nourishment for the Word of God, for holy meditation, and for Divine communion and fellowship.Ā 

Yes, pray against the spirit of worldly, sinful conformity in everything!Ā 

Reader! are you a professing Christian? Then guard againstĀ a worldly Christianity–a Christianity that wears a fair exterior, so far as it is composed of church attendance; but which excludes from it the cross of the meek and lowly Lamb of God–a Christianity which loves the world and the things of the world, “makes a fair show in the flesh,” speaks well of Christ–and yet betrays Him with a kiss.Ā 

Oh, awful state! Oh, fearful deception! Oh, fatal delusion!Ā 

The world is the sworn enemy of your Savior; let it not be your friend. No, come out of it and be separate!

Tomorrow comes, and they are in Hell!

“The wicked is driven away in his wickedness;
Ā but the righteous has hope in his death.” Proverbs 14:32

“The wicked is driven away in his wickedness.”
That is, the wicked manĀ dies–just as heĀ lived.
HeĀ livedĀ in wickedness, and in wickedness heĀ dies.Ā 

His wickednessĀ sticks fastĀ upon him–when his earthly enjoyments, his friends, and all created comforts leave him forever.

TheĀ guiltĀ of his wickedness lies heavy upon him–like a mountain of lead, ready to sink him into the depths of eternal misery!

And theĀ principlesĀ of wickedness, which he indulged all his life, still live within him, even after the agonies of death; nay, they now arrive at a dreadful immortality, and produceĀ an eternal Hell in his heart!

He leaves behind him not only all hisĀ earthly comforts–but all theĀ little remains of goodnessĀ which he seemed to have, while under the restraints of divine grace; and he carries nothing but his wickedness along with him into eternity! With this dreadful attendant–his wickedness–he must stand before the tribunal of his holy Judge! To leave hisĀ earthly allĀ behind him, and die in the agonies of dissolving nature–this is terrible. But toĀ die in his wickedness–this is infinitely the most terrible of all!

He onceĀ flatteredĀ himself that though heĀ livedĀ in wickedness–that he would notĀ dieĀ in it. He adopted manyĀ resolutionsĀ to amend, and forsake his wickedness toward the close of life, or upon a death-bed. But Oh! how sorely is he disappointed! After all his promising purposes and hopes, heĀ diedĀ as heĀ lived–in wickedness!

This is generally the fate ofĀ veterans in sin. They are resolving and re-resolving to reform all their lives; but after all, theyĀ dieĀ the same as theyĀ lived. TheyĀ intendĀ to prepare for death and eternity, but just notĀ today. They have always something else to do today; and therefore they put off this work untilĀ tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, and instead of reforming, theyĀ dieĀ in their wickedness.Ā TomorrowĀ comes, and they are in Hell!

He isĀ drivenĀ away, in spite of all his reluctance.Ā 
Let him cling to life ever so strongly, yetĀ he must go!Ā 
All his struggles are vain, and cannot add one moment to his life.

Indeed, the wicked have so little taste for Heaven, and are so much in love with this world–that if they leave it at all, they must beĀ drivenĀ out of it–drivenĀ out of it, whether they want or not!

When they hope for Heaven, they do in reality consider it but a shift, or a refuge, when they can no longer live in this, their favorite world. They do not at all desire Heaven–in comparison with this world. They would live forever in this present world, if they could have their choice. But let them grasp ever so hard, they must let go their hold. They must beĀ drivenĀ away, like chaff before a whirlwind–driven away into the regions ofĀ misery. Into the regions of misery, I say; for certainly the happiness of Heaven was never intended for such as are so averse to it; and who prefer this wretched world, with all its cares and sorrows–before Heaven itself!

“But the wicked will loseĀ hope. They have no escape. TheirĀ hopeĀ becomes despair.” Job 11:20

“When the wicked die, theirĀ hopesĀ all perish!” Proverbs 11:7

“The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but theĀ hope of the wickedĀ only in wrath!” Proverbs 11:23

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?Ā

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?

That God reigns supreme inĀ Heaven, is generally conceded; but that He reigns supreme over this earth, is almost universally denied–if not directly, then indirectly. More and more men are relegating God to the background in their philosophizing and theorizing.Ā 

Take theĀ materialĀ realm. Not only is it denied that GodĀ createdĀ everything, by personal and direct action–but few believe that He has any immediate concern in regulating the works of His own hands. Everything is supposed to be ordered according to the (impersonal and abstract) “laws of Nature”. Thus is the Creator banished from His own creation! Therefore we need not be surprised that men, in their degrading conceptions, exclude Him from the realm ofĀ human affairs.Ā 

Throughout Christendom, with an almost negligible exception, the theory is held thatĀ manĀ is “a free agent”, and therefore, man is the master of his fortunes and the determiner of his destiny.Ā 

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?Ā 


What do the Scriptures say? If we believe their plain and positive declarations, no room is left for uncertainty. They affirm, again and again . . .
Ā  that God is on theĀ throneĀ of His universe;
Ā  that theĀ scepterĀ is in His hands;
Ā  that He is directing all things “after the counsel of His own will”. Ephesians 1:11

The Scriptures affirm, not only that GodĀ createdĀ all things, but also that God isĀ rulingĀ andĀ reigningĀ over all the works of His hands. They affirm . . .
Ā  that God is the Almighty,
Ā  that His will is irreversible,
Ā  that He isĀ absolute sovereignĀ in every realm of all His vast dominions.Ā 

And surely it must be so. Only two alternatives are possible:
Ā  God must either rule–or be ruled;
Ā  God must either sway–or be swayed;
Ā  God must either accomplish His own will–or be thwarted by His creatures.Ā 

Accepting the fact that He is the “Most High God”, the only Potentate and King of kings, vested with perfect wisdom and illimitable power–the conclusion is irresistible, that He must be GodĀ in fact–as well as in name!

It is in view of what we have briefly referred to above, that we say, present-day conditions call loudly for a new examination and new presentation of God’s omnipotence, God’s sufficiency, and God’s sovereignty. From every pulpit in the land it needs to be thundered forth–that God still reigns! What is needed now, as never before, is a full, positive, constructive setting forth of the Godhood of God. Drastic diseases call for drastic remedies. We know of nothing which is more calculated to infuse spiritual vigor into our souls, than a scriptural apprehension of the full character of God!

“The LORD does whatever pleases Him throughout all Heaven and earth, and on the seas and in their depths!” Psalm 135:6

“All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of Heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: What have you done?” Daniel 4:35Ā 

“Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns!” Revelation 19:6Ā

“He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleetingĀ shadow, he does not endure.” Job 14:2

“What is your life? You are aĀ vaporĀ that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14

All isĀ shadowĀ here below!Ā 

TheĀ worldĀ is a shadow–and is passing away!Ā 

TheĀ creatureĀ is a shadow–and the loveliest and the fondest may be the first to die!Ā 

HealthĀ is a shadow–fading, and in a moment gone!

WealthĀ is a shadow–today upon the summit of affluence, tomorrow at its base, plunged into poverty and dependence!

Human friendshipsĀ andĀ creature affectionsĀ are but shadows–sweet and pleasant while they last; but, with a worm feeding at the root of all created good, the sheltering gourd soon withers, exposing us to the sun’s burning heat by day, and to the frost’s cold chill by night!Ā 

Oh, yes!Ā “Passing Away!”Ā is indelibly inscribed upon everything here below!Ā 

Yet how slow we are to realize the solemn lesson: “What shadows we are–and what shadows we pursue!”Ā 

Unconverted reader, what is your life–but a vapor that passes away?Ā 
And what are your pursuits, but shadows–unreal, unsatisfying, evanescent?Ā 

Your rank, your wealth, your honors, your pleasures, are but phantoms which appear but for a little while, and then are lost in the deeper shadow of the grave, and the still deeper and longer shadow of eternity!Ā 

Oh, turn from these dreams and hallucinations, and, as a rational, accountable, immortal being, on your way to judgment–fix your mind upon your solemn, endless future! You are going to die! And, oh, when that dread hour comes, so real and appalling–how then will your past trifling life appear?

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you!” 1 Peter 5:7Ā 

The Christian’s life is very much made up ofĀ caresĀ andĀ comforts.
Cares spring from earth–comfort comes from Heaven.
Cares prove him a sinner–holy comforts prove him a saint.
Cares flow in from a variety of quarters–true comfort from only one quarter.
Cares come naturally–but comforts come supernaturally.Ā 

Cares must be cast on our God–or they will prove a burden too heavy for us. They will depress us, bewilder us, and make us wretched. But here is our comfort–we have always ONE to care for us, and the very One which of all others we would wish to do so, “TheĀ LordĀ cares for you!”

God cares for whom?Ā 
For you, who are born again by the Spirit.Ā 
For you, who are strangers and pilgrims on the earth.Ā 
For you, who are placed in humble circumstances, being numbered with the poor of this world.Ā 
For you, who are compassed about with so many cares, and who enjoy so few comforts.
For you, who are surprised at your many fiery trials, as though some strange thing had happened unto you.
For you, who are worried and harassed by Satan, who, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour.Ā 
For you, who are persecuted by the world, and hated by men for your Savior’s sake.Ā 
For you, to whom Christ is precious–as He is to every one who truly believes in Him.Ā 

God’s care extends toĀ every ChristianĀ . . .
Ā  the young and the aged,
Ā  the weak and the strong,
Ā  the poor and the wealthy,
Ā  the doubting and the confident.Ā 
Believer, He cares for you!

Who is it that cares for us?
It isĀ the Lord, the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy;
who is soĀ great–that we have no adequate conception of His greatness;
who is soĀ good–that it is impossible fully to set forth His goodness;
who is soĀ glorious–that no sinner can see His face and live.Ā 
It is He . . .
Ā Ā  whoĀ createdĀ all things with His word,
Ā Ā  whoĀ governsĀ all by His wisdom,Ā 
Ā Ā  andĀ upholdsĀ all by His power.Ā 
His resources are infinite,Ā 
His compassion is exquisite, andĀ 
His patience is astonishingly great.Ā 
He enters into all the circumstances of His redeemed people, is ever present with them, and rejoices over them to do them good.Ā 

The angels obey Him,Ā 
the seraphim adore Him,Ā 
and all creation glorifies Him!Ā 

But though He is so exalted, so holy, and so unspeakably great . . .
Ā  He cares for you–as vile as you are.
Ā  He cares for you–as sinful as you are.
Ā  He cares for you–as depressed and discouraged as you are.Ā 
He cares for you. He cares for youĀ individually, and according to the circumstances in which you are placed.

What does He do?Ā 
HeĀ caresĀ for you!
HeĀ thinksĀ of you!
HeĀ watchesĀ over you!
HeĀ sympathizesĀ with you!
He feels the deepest interest in you!
He ever seeks your welfare!
He infallibly secures your good!

YourĀ miseryĀ touches His heart,
yourĀ needsĀ lie open to His view,
and yourĀ criesĀ enter into His ears!

He cares for you more than for the proudest monarch on his throne!Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is CONSTANT!Ā 
It is not fitful or occasional–but ever the same.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is PATERNAL!Ā 
It is the care of a father for his child–the child whom he tenderly loves, and for whose welfare he feels the deepest concern.Ā 

He cares for you, and His care is PERPETUAL!Ā 
He will never care for you less than He does at present.Ā 
When old age weakens you,Ā 
when poverty pinches you,Ā 
when death appears just before you–
He will care for you as much as He does at this moment.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is BENEFICIAL!Ā 
It prevents innumerable evils–and secures the greatest possible amount of good. His care is more advantageous than the care of the kindest father, though that father were monarch of the mightiest empire, and possessed unbounded wealth. The care of God is of more value than the care of all His creatures combined.Ā 

He cares for you–but His care is MYSTERIOUSLY EXERCISED!Ā 
It benefits us certainly–but secretly. It conceals itself behind the blessings it brings, and the evils it prevents.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is SPECIAL!Ā 
It is not the care which He has for the beasts which perish, or the unbelieving sinners who die under His frown.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is PARTICULAR.Ā 
It is care which extends to the very hairs of your heads, which, are all numbered–and to all the events and occurrences of your life, however minute or commonplace!

Beloved, here is our comfort. We may lose the care of an earthly relative or dear friend by death–but the Lord ever lives; and while He lives, He . . .
Ā  ever loves us,
Ā  thoroughly knows us, and
Ā  never ceases to care for us!

Here is the ground of our confidence for the future. We know notĀ whereĀ we shall be, norĀ whatĀ we shall be–for we know not what a day may bring forth. But this we know, that God will care for us, and, caring for us–He will fulfill His precious promises to us.Ā 

If God cares for us, then . . .
Ā Ā  let us cast all our cares upon Him;Ā 
Ā Ā  let us live in daily fellowship with Him;Ā 
Ā Ā  let us seek all our supplies from Him.Ā 

If God cares for us, then let us not dishonor Him by nursing our doubts, or encouraging our fears–but let us trust in Him at all times, for . . .

Ā  His knowledge isĀ perfect.Ā 

We shall never be without aĀ divineĀ friend–however trying our circumstances may be. We shall never be without aĀ divineĀ guide–however perplexing or difficult our path may be. The care of God is more than the care of all the angelic hosts. If the care of God is not sufficient to preserve, supply, and satisfy us–then nothing is.

May the Lord help me to believe this precious truth, to realize it daily, and to pass through the present world under the impression, “I am the object of God’s tender, paternal, and ceaseless care!

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous fall!” Psalm 55:22

If God is my portion, then I ought to beĀ contentĀ without any other portion. He is . . .
Ā  enough in poverty,
Ā  enough in persecution,
Ā  enough in life,
Ā  enough in death,
Ā  enough for evermore!

If God gives me Himself–then it is more than as if He had given me the whole world, or ten thousand worlds like this! O how happy was the apostle Paul, who knowing God to be his portion could say, “I have learned to beĀ contentĀ whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learnedĀ the secret of being contentĀ in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in need!” Philippians 4:11-12

If God is my portion, I ought to beĀ thankful. It is enough. There is no losing it. What dignity, what honor is conferred onĀ the man who has God for his portion!Ā I deserved to be stripped of everything, and to be turned out of God’s presence eternally penniless, wretched, and miserable. The man of fortune ought not to live like the pauper. Just so, the Christian ought to live above other men.Ā 

If God is my portion, I ought to be making aĀ proper useĀ of it. I should set my portion over and against . . .
Ā  all my pains and privations,
Ā  all my griefs and grievances,Ā 
Ā  all my sadnesses and sorrows.Ā 

I should lookĀ aboveĀ all my trials and troubles–and rejoice that throughout eternity, I shall have . . .

Mind what you are doing–you prosperous people, you who have nice homes, you who are hoarding up money. There is nothing permanent for you here on earth. Your home is in Heaven–your home is not here. If you find your treasure here–your heart will be here also.Ā 

You must keep all earthly treasures out of your heart.Ā 

Let Christ be your treasure, and let Him have your heart!

ThisĀ harmless, plastic, painted JesusĀ who has no spine, nor justice, nor wrath–but is a soft and pliant friend to everybody;Ā  if He is the only Christ, then we might as well close our Bibles, bar our doors and make a bakery or garage out of our church buildings!

The popular Christ being preached today–is not the Christ of the Bible, nor the Christ who will be our final Judge.Ā 

Jesus Christ our Lord, the Judge with the flaming eyes–is the one with whom we must deal. We cannot escape it.

“Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks: Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” Revelation 6:15-17Ā

Parents! YourĀ exampleĀ and life are a continual and powerful sermon which is always seen by your children!

Parents! Your children have anĀ everlasting inheritance of happinessĀ to attain–and it is that which you must bring them up for. They have anĀ endless miseryĀ to escape–and it is that which you must diligently teach them. If you don’t teach them to know God, and how to serve Him, and be saved, and to escape the flames of Hell–you teach them nothing, or worse than nothing.Ā It is in your hands to do them the greatest kindness or cruelty in all the world!Ā Help them to know God and to be saved, and you do more for them than if you helped them to be kings or princes.Ā 

If you neglect their souls, and bring them up them in ignorance, worldliness, ungodliness, and sin–youĀ betray them to the devil,the enemy of their souls, even as truly as if you sold them to him!Ā You sell them to be slaves to Satan!Ā You betray them to him who will deceive them and abuse them in this life–and torment them in eternity!

If you saw but a burning furnace, much more the flames of Hell–would you not think that man or womanĀ more fit to be called a devil than a parent, who could find in their hearts to cast their child into it? WhatĀ monsters then of inhumanityĀ are you, who read in Scripture what is the way to Hell, and who they are that God will deliver up to Satan, to be tormented by him–and yet will bring up your children in that very way, and will not take pains to save them from it!

If you love them, show it in those things on which their everlasting welfare depends.Ā Do not say you love them, and yet lead them unto Hell!Ā If you do not love them, yet do not be so unmerciful to them as to damn them! You cannot possibly do more to damn them, than to bring them up in . . .
Ā  ignorance,
Ā  carelessness,
Ā  worldliness,
Ā  sensuality and
Ā  ungodliness!
There is no other way to Hell. And yet, will you bring them up in such a life–and say that you do not desire to damn them?Ā 

But if you train up your children in ungodliness, you may as well say thatĀ you intend to have them damned!Ā And is not the devil more excusable, for dealing thus cruelly to your children–than you who are their parents, who are bound by nature to love them, and prevent their misery?

Let me seriously speak to the hearts of those careless and ungodly parents, who neglect the holy education of their children.Ā Oh, do not be so unmerciful to those who you have brought into the world!Ā Oh, pity and help the souls that you have defiled and undone! Have mercy on the souls that must perish in Hell, if they are not saved! Oh help them who have . . .
Ā  so manyĀ enemiesĀ to assault them;
Ā  so manyĀ temptationsĀ to pass through;
Ā  so manyĀ difficultiesĀ to overcome;Ā 
Ā  so severe aĀ judgmentĀ to undergo!Ā

You live–only because He gives you life. He could take all your comforts from you–if it pleased Him. He could lay you on a bed of sickness this very day–He could in a moment, strike you dead!

Have you even spoken to Him today? Have you prayed to Him today?

I do not wonder that so many are deceived, when I see the careless way in which they deal with their souls. When men have to do with theirĀ estates, they are very careful; they pay a lawyer to go back over the title-deeds perhaps for two or three hundred years. InĀ tradeĀ they will hurry hither and thither to attend to their commercial engagements; they would not launch into speculations, nor would they run great risks.Ā 

But theĀ soul, the poor soul–how menĀ playĀ with it as a toy, andĀ despiseĀ it as if it were worthless! Two or three minutes in the morning when they first roll out of bed; two or three odd minutes in the evening, when they are nearly asleep–the fag-ends of the day given to their souls, and all the best part given to the body!Ā 

And then, with what indifference do you lend your ears too often to the preaching of the Word! It is an old song–you have heard it so many times.Ā Heaven has become a trifle to you, Hell is almost a jest, eternity an empty notion, and death but a bugbear!

Alas! it is a marvel that there are not more deceived. The wonder is that any find the gate, that any discover eternal life, when we are so, so mad, so foolish, so insane–as to trifle where we ought to be solemnly in earnest; and to play and toy–where the whole heart should be given to a work of such everlasting importance. God help us, since it is so easy to be deceived–to search, and watch, and look, and test, and try, that we be not found castaways at the last!

How comprehensive is the love of Jesus! There is no part of His people’s interests which He does not consider. There is nothing which concerns their welfare which is not important to Him. Not merely does He think of you, believer, as anĀ immortalĀ being–but as aĀ mortalĀ being too. Do not deny it or doubt it: “The very hairs of your head are all numbered!” It would be a sad thing for us if His mantle of love did not cover all our concerns–for what harm might be wrought to us if any of our matters did not come under our gracious Lord’s care!Ā 

Believer, rest assured that the heart of Jesus cares about your smaller affairs. The breadth of His tender love is such that you may resort to Him in all matters; for as a father pities his children–so does He pity you, His redeemed child. The smallest interests of all His saints–are all borne upon the broad bosom of the Son of God. Oh, what a heart is His, that does not merely comprehend the salvation of His people–but comprehends also, all their diverse and innumerable concerns!Ā 

Do you think, O Christian, that you canĀ measureĀ the love of Christ? Think of what His love has brought you–justification, adoption, sanctification, eternal life! The riches of His goodness are unsearchable; you shall never be able toĀ tallyĀ them–or evenĀ conceiveĀ them. Oh, the breadth of the love of Christ!

Shall such a love as this haveĀ halfĀ our hearts? Shall it have aĀ coldĀ love in return? Shall Jesus’ marvelous loving-kindness and tender care, meet with but faint response and tardy acknowledgment?Ā 

O my soul, you are no desolate wanderer–butĀ a beloved child, watched over, cared for, supplied, and defended by your Lord!

“May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully!” Ephesians 3:18-19

He sees and knows just what is best for each day and hour. So, always when you think of Him, think of Him as thus looking down upon you and ever caring for you.

The Holy Spirit is ever leading us toĀ thinkĀ of Christ and toĀ liveĀ for Christ and continually toĀ lookĀ to Christ.

The natural mind makesĀ selfĀ the center, and self the end.Ā 
The spiritual mind makesĀ ChristĀ the center, and Christ the end.Ā 
The more we seek Christ, and the less we seek self–the more we please Him.

Christ is the source and end both ofĀ graceĀ on earth andĀ gloryĀ in Heaven.Ā

See what cause the saints have to be frequent in the work ofĀ thanksgiving!Ā In this, Christians are defective; though they are much inĀ supplication–yet they are little inĀ thanksgiving. The apostle says. “In everything give thanks!Ā 1 Thessalonians 5:18Ā 

Why so?Ā Because God makes everything work together for our good.Ā 

We thank theĀ physician, though he gives us a bitter medicine which makes us nauseated–because it is to make us well. We thank any man who does us a good turn; and shall we not be thankful to God–who makesĀ everythingĀ work for good to us?

God loves a thankful Christian!Ā Job thanked GodĀ when He took all away:Ā “The Lord has taken away–blessed be the name of the Lord!” Job 1:21. Many will thank God when HeĀ gives; Job thanks Him when HeĀ takes away, because he knew that God would work good out of it.

We read of saints withĀ harpsĀ in their hands–an emblem of praise. Revelation 14:2. Yet we meet many Christians who haveĀ tearsĀ in their eyes, andĀ complaintsĀ in their mouths! But there are few with their harps in their hands–whoĀ praise God in affliction.

To beĀ thankful in affliction–is a work peculiar to a saint.Ā 
Every bird can sing in spring–but few birds will sing in the dead of winter!Ā 
Everyone, almost, can be thankful inĀ prosperity–but a true saint can be thankful inĀ adversity!Ā 

Well may we, in theĀ worstĀ that befalls us, have a psalm of thankfulness–because God works all things together for our good.Ā Oh, be much in giving thanks to God!

“John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him: You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire!” Luke 3

We have, in these verses, a specimen of John the Baptist’s ministry. It is a portion of Scripture which should always be especially interesting to a Christian mind.

We should first mark theĀ holy boldnessĀ with which John addresses the multitudes who came to his baptism. He speaks to them as a “brood of vipers!” He saw the rottenness and hypocrisy of the profession which the crowd around him were making, and uses language descriptive of their case.Ā 
His head was not turned by popularity.Ā 
He did not care who was offended by his words.
The spiritual disease of those before him was desperate, and of long standing–and he knew that desperate diseases need strong remedies!

Well would it be for the Church of Christ, if it possessed moreĀ plain speaking ministersĀ in our days–like John the Baptist.Ā 

A morbid dislike to strong language;Ā 
an excessive fear of giving offence;Ā 
a constant flinching from directness and plain speaking–
are, unhappily, too much the characteristics of the modern Christian pulpit.Ā 

Uncharitable language is no doubt always to be deprecated. But there is no charity . . .
Ā  in flattering unconverted people,Ā 
Ā  in abstaining from any mention of their vices,Ā 
Ā  or in applying smooth names to damnable sins!Ā 

There are two texts which are too much forgotten by Christian preachers. In one it is written, “Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you.” Luke 6:26. In the other it is written, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men–or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were trying to please men–I would not be Christ’s servant.” Galatians 1:10

We should mark, also–how plainly John speaksĀ to his hearers about HELL and danger!Ā 
He tells them that there is a “coming wrath!”Ā 
He speaks of “the ax” of God’s judgment–and of unfruitful trees being “thrown into the fire!”

The subject of HELL is always offensive to human nature. The minister who dwells much upon it–must expect to find himself regarded asĀ barbaric, violent, unfeeling and narrow-minded!Ā 

Men love to hear “smooth things,” and to be told of peace, and not of danger. Isaiah 30:10Ā 

But the subject of Hell is one that ought not to be kept back, if we desire to do good to souls. It is one that our Lord Jesus Christ brought forward frequently in His public teachings. That loving Savior, who spoke so graciously of the way to Heaven–has also used the plainest language about the way to Hell.

Let us beware of being wise above that which is written, and more charitable than Scripture itself. Let the language of John the Baptist be deeply engraved on our hearts. Let us never be ashamed to avow our firm belief, that there is a “coming wrath” for the impenitent; and that it is possible for a man to be lost, as well as to be saved.Ā 

To beĀ silentĀ on the subject–is dreadful treachery to men’s souls. It only encourages them to persevere in wickedness, and fostersĀ the devil’s old delusionĀ in their minds,Ā “You shall not surely die!”Ā Genesis 3:4

That minister is surely our best friend–who tells us honestly of danger, and warns us, like John the Baptist, to “flee from the wrath to come!”

Never will a man flee–until he sees that there is real cause to be afraid.Ā 
Never will he seek Heaven–until he is convinced that he is on his way to Hell.Ā 

The religion in which there is no mention of Hell–is not the religion of John the Baptist, or of our Lord Jesus and His apostles!

Coming from a broken home and being brought up with the life long radiation fallout of this…Love is whatever affection you can grab, and women where objectified. The Lord was certainly angry at me and my lifestyle and being trapped in pit after pit…

But God who is rich in love and mercy reached down and saved me. His Word was a sharp sword that cut straight through my soul and showed me what His true love is, and working through my lovely wife Sarah to show, teach and grow to be a husband fit for a princess! šŸ˜€ šŸ™šŸ»

A great change has taken place in the last forty years. A quantity ofĀ church workĀ is continually being carried on both by clergymen and laymen, which, however well-meant, can hardly be calledĀ Christian–and in reality has a painful tendency to throw true Christian work into the background, if not to throw it entirely out!Ā 

No one, for instance, can fail to observe that a large number of professors are spending all their time and strength on church music, church decorations, church programs, and an incessant round of churchĀ attractions. Others are equally absorbed in social work, feeding the poor, and improved dwellings for everyone. Others are incessantly getting up popular concerts, secular lectures, and evening recreations. They proclaim everywhere, thatĀ the way to do good is to amuse people!

Others are always occupied withĀ secularĀ guilds, and societies, and associations–and think you very wrong and heathenish if you do not join them. Myriads ofĀ professorsĀ are restlessly busy about such things from one end of the land to the other; and superficial observers are often saying,Ā “What a great deal of church-work there is in these days!”

Now I would not for a moment be supposed to mean that all the things I have just mentioned are wrong and wicked. Yet I doubt whether the present state of things is altogether healthy. I doubt whether the work of the Holy Spirit on hearts and consciences, is not insensibly being left out in the cold and neglected. Amidst the incessant hustle and bustle about matters ofĀ entirely secondary importance–I doubt whether the sort of direct spiritual work to which the Apostles wholly gave themselves, receives as much attention as it ought.Ā 

It is quite certain that musical services, and church decorations, and concerts, and bazaars, and social work, and the like–will not save souls.Ā 

It is equally certain that, without repentance, and faith, and holy living, and practical, self-denying, kindly charity–no one is fit for Heaven. Do these simple, old-fashioned graces fill the place which they ought to do, in the daily proceedings of many so-called church-workers in this day? I confess I doubt it exceedingly.Ā 

I certainly see on every side a vast increase of what people call “church-work.” But there is little or no increase of true religion. There undoubtedly is moreĀ showĀ andĀ glitterĀ andĀ display. But I extremely doubt whether there is more spiritual reality, and more growth of practical godliness.

What a gracious stoop of love! He frequently lifts the lowest of mankind out of their poverty and degradation, and adopts them into His family.Ā 

His gracious Spirit is continually visiting the down-trodden, giving beauty for ashes to those who are cast down, and elevating the hearts of His mourners until they shout for joy.Ā

of what mighty transforming power, is it the source!Ā 

Around the cross gathers all the light of the Old Testament economy:Ā

Ā  it fulfills everyĀ type,Ā

It is the cross which eclipses, in the view of the true believer, the glory and attraction of every other object.Ā 

What is the weapon by which faith combats with, and overcomes the world? What but the cross of Jesus!Ā 

Just as the natural eye, gazing for a while upon the sun, is blinded for the moment to all other objects by its overpowering effulgence; so to the believer, concentrating his mind upon the glory of the crucified Savior, studying closely the wonders ofĀ graceandĀ loveĀ andĀ truthĀ meeting in the cross–the world with all its attraction fades into the full darkness of an eclipse.Ā

The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take greatĀ delightĀ in you . . . He willĀ rejoiceĀ over you with singing!” Zephaniah 3:17Ā 

How heart-cheering to the believer, isĀ theĀ delightĀ which God has in His redeemed people!

We cannot see any reason inĀ ourselvesĀ why the Lord should take pleasure in us. We cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan, being burdened; conscious of our sinfulness, and deploring our unfaithfulness.Ā 

And we fear thatĀ God’s peopleĀ cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies, that they may rather lament our infirmities, than admire our graces.Ā 

But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery–that as the bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so does the Lord rejoice over us!Ā 

We do not read anywhere that God delights in the cloud-capped mountains, or the sparkling stars–but we do read that His delights are with the sons of men.Ā 

We do not find it written that evenĀ angelsĀ give His soul delight; nor does He say, concerning cherubim and seraphim, “You shall be calledĀ Hephzibah, for the LordĀ delightsĀ in you”; but He does say all that to poor fallen creatures like ourselves, debased and depraved by sin–but redeemed and saved by His grace.Ā 

In what strong language He expresses His delight in His people! Who could have conceived of the eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, “He will take greatĀ delightĀ in you . . . He will rejoice over you withĀ singing!”Ā 

As He looked upon the world He had made, He said, “It is very good”. But when He beheld those who are the purchase of Jesus’ blood, His own chosen ones, it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer–but overflowed in divine exclamations of joy.Ā 

Should not we utter ourĀ grateful responseĀ to such a marvelous declaration of His love, and sing, “I will rejoice in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”Ā

“My times are in Your hand!”Ā Psalm 31:15Ā 

Why then, need I worry or tremble? That great, loving, powerfulĀ handĀ keeps all the events of my life sealed and secure within its almighty clasp! Only He, my Maker and my Master, can permit them to be revealed to me as His will for me.Ā What a compassionate, gracious arrangement!Ā How eminently fitted to fulfill that sweet promise of His Word, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You!” If we fully believed this, we would be absolutely devoid of theĀ worryĀ which corrodes and chafes the daily life of so many professing Christians.

“My times.” Not one or twoĀ importantĀ epochs of my history only–butĀ everythingĀ that concerns me:
Ā Ā joysĀ that I had not expected,
Ā Ā sorrowsĀ that must have crushed me, if they could have been anticipated,Ā 
Ā Ā sufferingsĀ which might have terrified me by their grimness, had I looked upon them,
Ā Ā surprisesĀ which infinite love had prepared for me,
Ā Ā servicesĀ of which I could not have imagined myself capable–
all these lay in that mighty hand, as the purposes of God’s eternal will for me.Ā 

But, as they have developed gradually and silently–how great has been theĀ loveĀ which appeared enwrapping and enfolding each one!Ā 
Has not theĀ griefĀ been measured–while theĀ gladnessĀ has far more abounded?Ā 
Have not the comforts and consolations–exceeded the crosses and afflictions?Ā 
Have not all things been so arranged, and ordered, and undertaken, and worked out on our behalf–that we can but marvel at the goodness and wisdom of God, in meting out from that dearĀ handĀ of His, all the “times” that have passed over us?

You agree with me in all this, do you not, dear reader? Then I beg you to apply it to your present circumstances, however dark or difficult they may be.Ā They have come directly from your Father’s hand to you, and they are His dear will for you!

What! The whole of it meaningless?

“Behold, all is vanity!” Ecclesiastes 1:14

Nothing can fully satisfy a person, but the Lord’s love and the Lord’s own self. Saints have tried other pursuits, but they have been driven out of such foolish and fatal refuges.

Solomon, the wisest of men, was permitted to make experiments for us all, and to do for us what we must not dare to do for ourselves. Here is his testimony in his own words: “So I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind! Nothing was gained under the sun!” “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

What! the whole of it meaningless?Ā O favored monarch, is there nothing in all your wealth? Nothing in your wide dominion reaching even to the sea? Nothing in your glorious palaces? In all your music and dancing, and wine and luxury–is there nothing?Ā 
“Nothing!”Ā he says,Ā “but a chasing after the wind!”Ā 
This was his final verdict, when he had trodden the whole round of pleasure.

To embrace our Lord Jesus, to dwell in His love, and be fully assured of union with Him–this isĀ all in all.Ā 

Dear reader, you need not try other forms of pleasure in order to see whether they are better than the Christian’s. If you roam the world around, you will see no sights like a sight of the Savior’s face! If you could have all the comforts of life, but lost your Savior–you would be most wretched. But if you possess Christ,Ā though you should rot in a dungeon–you would find it a paradise! Though you should live in obscurity, or die with famine–yet you would be satisfied with the favor and goodness of the Lord!Ā 

“But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.Ā What is more,Ā I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ!” Philippians 3:7-8Ā

The Savior’s abiding presence with His redeemed people!

“O LORD, You have searched me and You know me.
Ā You know when I sit and when I rise;
Ā You perceive my thoughts from afar.
Ā You discern my going out and my lying down;
Ā You are familiar with all my ways!
Ā Before a word is on my tongue, You know it completely, O LORD!” Psalm 139:1-4

Doctrines are not such cold, lifeless things as some would have us to believe. There is no doctrine of Scripture which is not fitted toaffect the lifeĀ of him who believes it. Consider the proper influence upon us, of the doctrine and promise ofĀ the Savior’s abiding presence with His redeemed people. If we believe and always recollect that Christ is truly with us always–how will it affect us?

For one thing it will make us very thoughtful and careful in all our words and acts. Christ is present in HisĀ holinessĀ as well as in His love and tenderness. His pure eyes see all our life, and see into our hearts. He is ever beholding us–our real inner life.

The thought of the Master’s eyeĀ upon us should . . .
Ā  make us holy,
Ā  rebuke our sins, and
Ā  hold us back from evil.Ā 

We cannot do wicked things in the presence of even a pure and holy human friend. But could we be continually conscious of Christ’s perpetual presence with us, of His eye ever resting upon us, then . . .
Ā  Could we run into sin?
Ā  Could we live carelessly?
Ā  Could we trifle?
Ā  Could we speak sharp, bitter, or unkind words?
Ā  Could we do unholy, unlovely things?Ā 

Surely the realizing of His perpetual abiding presence would make us live reverently, purely, lovingly–so as always to please and never to grieve Him.
