The only effectual reformer of the world!

(Samuel Davies, “Serious Reflections on WAR” 1757)

“When He comes–He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment!” John 16:8

The Holy Spirit isĀ the only effectual reformer of the world!Ā If He is absent–
Ā Ā legislatorsĀ may make laws against crime;Ā 
Ā Ā philosophersĀ may reason against vice;Ā 
Ā Ā ministersĀ may preach against sin;Ā 
Ā Ā conscienceĀ may remonstrate against evil;
Ā  theĀ divine lawĀ may prescribe, and threaten Hell;Ā 
Ā  theĀ gospelĀ may invite, and allure to Heaven;Ā 
but all will be in vain!

The strongest arguments, the most melting entreaties, the most alarming denunciations from God and man, enforced with the highest authority, or the most compassionate tears–all will have no effect–all will not effectually reclaim one sinner, nor gain one sincere convert to righteousness!Ā 

Paul, Apollos, and Peter, with all their apostolic abilities, can do nothing, without the Holy Spirit. Paul may plant the seed–and Apollos may water it; but God alone can make it grow! “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything–but only God, who makes things grow!” 1 Corinthians 3:6, 7

Never will peace and harmony be established in thisĀ jangling world–until thisĀ Divine AgentĀ takes the work in hand.

It is He alone, who can melt down the obstinate hearts of men into love and peace!Ā 

It is He alone, who can soften their rugged and savage tempers, and transform them into mutual benevolence!Ā 

It is He alone–who can quench those lusts that set the world on fire, and implant the opposite virtues and graces. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, are mentioned by Paul, as theĀ fruit of the Spirit, because the Spirit alone is the author of them. And if these dispositions were predominant in the world–what a serene, calm, peaceful region would it be,Ā undisturbed with the hurricanes of human passions!

Oh, how much do we need the influence of the blessed Spirit . . .
Ā  to break the heart of stone,
Ā  to enlighten the dark mind, and
Ā  to comfort the desponding soul!

Viewing man as a fallen, sinful creature–the gospel isĀ theĀ onlyĀ system adapted to his case!Ā Ā 
The more he contemplates it, the more he perceives its precious adaptation to his dreadful state.Ā 
The gospel is . . .
Ā  light, for the darkness of his reason;Ā 
Ā  peace, for the tumult of his conscience;Ā 
Ā  joy, for the anguish of his mind;Ā 
Ā  hope, for the gloom of his despair.Ā 

Is he guilty? The gospel presents . . .
Ā  an all-sufficient Savior,
Ā  an all-atoning sacrifice,
Ā  and an all-forgiving God.Ā 

Is he impure? The gospel opens up for him a fountain for sin and for uncleanness–a hallowed flood supplied from the Redeemer’s cross, where the vilest sinner may wash from his heinous pollution.Ā 

Is he alienated from God–at an infinite distance from the only source of happiness and forgiveness? The gospel is a medium of approach, a way of access to the thrice holy God. Here the Alpine mountains of his guilt are leveled to the dust. Here the prodigal returns, is freely received, fully forgiven, elevated to a place in his heavenly Father’s family, and never lost from his heavenly Father’s heart.Ā 

Is he the victim of ignorance and error? Here he receives the lessons of a heavenly prophet–theĀ SpiritĀ of God becomes his kind instructor. Here the untutored savage is made wiser than the learned sage, “wise unto salvation!”

Does he feel himself the subject of passions that lead him continually astray from God?Ā 
The same Spirit becomes the inhabitant of his bosom . . .
Ā  to subdue his passions,Ā 
Ā  to curb his lusts,Ā 
Ā  to control his will, andĀ 
Ā  to sanctify the nature He has first renewed, and which shall finally be glorified with Christ.Ā 

In every point of view, the gospel meets his case!

Is he a sinner? The gospel offers pardon!

Is he a debtor? The gospel grants him full payment of his dept!Ā 

Is he a captive to sin and Satan? The gospel gives him liberty.Ā 

Is he fallen into utter depravity? It elevates him to God’s throne, and constitutes him “a king and a priest unto God.”Ā 

Is he thirsty? The gospel is a river of life.Ā 

Is he weary? It is a sweet repose.Ā 

Is he ignorant? The gospel is a divine instructor.Ā 

Is he spiritually diseased? It is immortal health and vigor to his soul.Ā 

Is he dying? The gospel is eternal life.Ā 

Yes, in the gospel . . .
Ā  the law is fulfilled,
Ā  justice is atoned, and
Ā  the divine perfections are harmonized in man’s redemption.

My heart feels for you, my dear friend, in your deep, deep trial. This present world is a world of sadness; but when we think of that glorious world which is to come, into which sorrow never enters, and how soon we may be there–we may well “rejoice in tribulation.” Our “light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory!”Ā 

In all your sorrows, pour out your heart to the Man of sorrows. He will bow down His ear and listen to all that you say. He will eitherĀ removeĀ orĀ moderateĀ your trial, or give youĀ strengthĀ to bear it. Even this bitter draught He has given you to drink shall result both in your good and His glory.Ā 

Remember, not a sparrow falls upon the ground without His guidance, and that the very hairs of your head are all numbered. How much more hasĀ this trying event been ordered and arranged by Him who loves you!Ā Infinite wisdom has appointed the whole!Ā Never doubt that He loves you, when He most deeply afflicts.Ā 

May He lift up upon you the light of His countenance, drawing you nearer to Himself, that you may see what a tender, loving heart He has for you, andĀ how deeply and tenderly and considerately He cares for you–as if there were not another poor sorrowful one to care for on the face of the whole earth!

Pray against a thirst forĀ light and trifling reading, that strange and sinful inconsistency of so many, the certain tendency of which is to starve the life of God in the soul, to engender a distaste for spiritual nourishment for the Word of God, for holy meditation, and for Divine communion and fellowship.Ā 

Yes, pray against the spirit of worldly, sinful conformity in everything!Ā 

Reader! are you a professing Christian? Then guard againstĀ a worldly Christianity–a Christianity that wears a fair exterior, so far as it is composed of church attendance; but which excludes from it the cross of the meek and lowly Lamb of God–a Christianity which loves the world and the things of the world, “makes a fair show in the flesh,” speaks well of Christ–and yet betrays Him with a kiss.Ā 

Oh, awful state! Oh, fearful deception! Oh, fatal delusion!Ā 

The world is the sworn enemy of your Savior; let it not be your friend. No, come out of it and be separate!

Tomorrow comes, and they are in Hell!

“The wicked is driven away in his wickedness;
Ā but the righteous has hope in his death.” Proverbs 14:32

“The wicked is driven away in his wickedness.”
That is, the wicked manĀ dies–just as heĀ lived.
HeĀ livedĀ in wickedness, and in wickedness heĀ dies.Ā 

His wickednessĀ sticks fastĀ upon him–when his earthly enjoyments, his friends, and all created comforts leave him forever.

TheĀ guiltĀ of his wickedness lies heavy upon him–like a mountain of lead, ready to sink him into the depths of eternal misery!

And theĀ principlesĀ of wickedness, which he indulged all his life, still live within him, even after the agonies of death; nay, they now arrive at a dreadful immortality, and produceĀ an eternal Hell in his heart!

He leaves behind him not only all hisĀ earthly comforts–but all theĀ little remains of goodnessĀ which he seemed to have, while under the restraints of divine grace; and he carries nothing but his wickedness along with him into eternity! With this dreadful attendant–his wickedness–he must stand before the tribunal of his holy Judge! To leave hisĀ earthly allĀ behind him, and die in the agonies of dissolving nature–this is terrible. But toĀ die in his wickedness–this is infinitely the most terrible of all!

He onceĀ flatteredĀ himself that though heĀ livedĀ in wickedness–that he would notĀ dieĀ in it. He adopted manyĀ resolutionsĀ to amend, and forsake his wickedness toward the close of life, or upon a death-bed. But Oh! how sorely is he disappointed! After all his promising purposes and hopes, heĀ diedĀ as heĀ lived–in wickedness!

This is generally the fate ofĀ veterans in sin. They are resolving and re-resolving to reform all their lives; but after all, theyĀ dieĀ the same as theyĀ lived. TheyĀ intendĀ to prepare for death and eternity, but just notĀ today. They have always something else to do today; and therefore they put off this work untilĀ tomorrow. Tomorrow comes, and instead of reforming, theyĀ dieĀ in their wickedness.Ā TomorrowĀ comes, and they are in Hell!

He isĀ drivenĀ away, in spite of all his reluctance.Ā 
Let him cling to life ever so strongly, yetĀ he must go!Ā 
All his struggles are vain, and cannot add one moment to his life.

Indeed, the wicked have so little taste for Heaven, and are so much in love with this world–that if they leave it at all, they must beĀ drivenĀ out of it–drivenĀ out of it, whether they want or not!

When they hope for Heaven, they do in reality consider it but a shift, or a refuge, when they can no longer live in this, their favorite world. They do not at all desire Heaven–in comparison with this world. They would live forever in this present world, if they could have their choice. But let them grasp ever so hard, they must let go their hold. They must beĀ drivenĀ away, like chaff before a whirlwind–driven away into the regions ofĀ misery. Into the regions of misery, I say; for certainly the happiness of Heaven was never intended for such as are so averse to it; and who prefer this wretched world, with all its cares and sorrows–before Heaven itself!

“But the wicked will loseĀ hope. They have no escape. TheirĀ hopeĀ becomes despair.” Job 11:20

“When the wicked die, theirĀ hopesĀ all perish!” Proverbs 11:7

“The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but theĀ hope of the wickedĀ only in wrath!” Proverbs 11:23

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?Ā

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?

That God reigns supreme inĀ Heaven, is generally conceded; but that He reigns supreme over this earth, is almost universally denied–if not directly, then indirectly. More and more men are relegating God to the background in their philosophizing and theorizing.Ā 

Take theĀ materialĀ realm. Not only is it denied that GodĀ createdĀ everything, by personal and direct action–but few believe that He has any immediate concern in regulating the works of His own hands. Everything is supposed to be ordered according to the (impersonal and abstract) “laws of Nature”. Thus is the Creator banished from His own creation! Therefore we need not be surprised that men, in their degrading conceptions, exclude Him from the realm ofĀ human affairs.Ā 

Throughout Christendom, with an almost negligible exception, the theory is held thatĀ manĀ is “a free agent”, and therefore, man is the master of his fortunes and the determiner of his destiny.Ā 

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today–God, or the Devil?Ā 


What do the Scriptures say? If we believe their plain and positive declarations, no room is left for uncertainty. They affirm, again and again . . .
Ā  that God is on theĀ throneĀ of His universe;
Ā  that theĀ scepterĀ is in His hands;
Ā  that He is directing all things “after the counsel of His own will”. Ephesians 1:11

The Scriptures affirm, not only that GodĀ createdĀ all things, but also that God isĀ rulingĀ andĀ reigningĀ over all the works of His hands. They affirm . . .
Ā  that God is the Almighty,
Ā  that His will is irreversible,
Ā  that He isĀ absolute sovereignĀ in every realm of all His vast dominions.Ā 

And surely it must be so. Only two alternatives are possible:
Ā  God must either rule–or be ruled;
Ā  God must either sway–or be swayed;
Ā  God must either accomplish His own will–or be thwarted by His creatures.Ā 

Accepting the fact that He is the “Most High God”, the only Potentate and King of kings, vested with perfect wisdom and illimitable power–the conclusion is irresistible, that He must be GodĀ in fact–as well as in name!

It is in view of what we have briefly referred to above, that we say, present-day conditions call loudly for a new examination and new presentation of God’s omnipotence, God’s sufficiency, and God’s sovereignty. From every pulpit in the land it needs to be thundered forth–that God still reigns! What is needed now, as never before, is a full, positive, constructive setting forth of the Godhood of God. Drastic diseases call for drastic remedies. We know of nothing which is more calculated to infuse spiritual vigor into our souls, than a scriptural apprehension of the full character of God!

“The LORD does whatever pleases Him throughout all Heaven and earth, and on the seas and in their depths!” Psalm 135:6

“All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of Heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: What have you done?” Daniel 4:35Ā 

“Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns!” Revelation 19:6Ā

What shadows we are–and what shadows we pursue!

“He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleetingĀ shadow, he does not endure.” Job 14:2

“What is your life? You are aĀ vaporĀ that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14

All isĀ shadowĀ here below!Ā 

TheĀ worldĀ is a shadow–and is passing away!Ā 

TheĀ creatureĀ is a shadow–and the loveliest and the fondest may be the first to die!Ā 

HealthĀ is a shadow–fading, and in a moment gone!

WealthĀ is a shadow–today upon the summit of affluence, tomorrow at its base, plunged into poverty and dependence!

Human friendshipsĀ andĀ creature affectionsĀ are but shadows–sweet and pleasant while they last; but, with a worm feeding at the root of all created good, the sheltering gourd soon withers, exposing us to the sun’s burning heat by day, and to the frost’s cold chill by night!Ā 

Oh, yes!Ā “Passing Away!”Ā is indelibly inscribed upon everything here below!Ā 

Yet how slow we are to realize the solemn lesson: “What shadows we are–and what shadows we pursue!”Ā 

Unconverted reader, what is your life–but a vapor that passes away?Ā 
And what are your pursuits, but shadows–unreal, unsatisfying, evanescent?Ā 

Your rank, your wealth, your honors, your pleasures, are but phantoms which appear but for a little while, and then are lost in the deeper shadow of the grave, and the still deeper and longer shadow of eternity!Ā 

Oh, turn from these dreams and hallucinations, and, as a rational, accountable, immortal being, on your way to judgment–fix your mind upon your solemn, endless future! You are going to die! And, oh, when that dread hour comes, so real and appalling–how then will your past trifling life appear?

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you!” 1 Peter 5:7Ā 

The Christian’s life is very much made up ofĀ caresĀ andĀ comforts.
Cares spring from earth–comfort comes from Heaven.
Cares prove him a sinner–holy comforts prove him a saint.
Cares flow in from a variety of quarters–true comfort from only one quarter.
Cares come naturally–but comforts come supernaturally.Ā 

Cares must be cast on our God–or they will prove a burden too heavy for us. They will depress us, bewilder us, and make us wretched. But here is our comfort–we have always ONE to care for us, and the very One which of all others we would wish to do so, “TheĀ LordĀ cares for you!”

God cares for whom?Ā 
For you, who are born again by the Spirit.Ā 
For you, who are strangers and pilgrims on the earth.Ā 
For you, who are placed in humble circumstances, being numbered with the poor of this world.Ā 
For you, who are compassed about with so many cares, and who enjoy so few comforts.
For you, who are surprised at your many fiery trials, as though some strange thing had happened unto you.
For you, who are worried and harassed by Satan, who, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour.Ā 
For you, who are persecuted by the world, and hated by men for your Savior’s sake.Ā 
For you, to whom Christ is precious–as He is to every one who truly believes in Him.Ā 

God’s care extends toĀ every ChristianĀ . . .
Ā  the young and the aged,
Ā  the weak and the strong,
Ā  the poor and the wealthy,
Ā  the doubting and the confident.Ā 
Believer, He cares for you!

Who is it that cares for us?
It isĀ the Lord, the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy;
who is soĀ great–that we have no adequate conception of His greatness;
who is soĀ good–that it is impossible fully to set forth His goodness;
who is soĀ glorious–that no sinner can see His face and live.Ā 
It is He . . .
Ā Ā  whoĀ createdĀ all things with His word,
Ā Ā  whoĀ governsĀ all by His wisdom,Ā 
Ā Ā  andĀ upholdsĀ all by His power.Ā 
His resources are infinite,Ā 
His compassion is exquisite, andĀ 
His patience is astonishingly great.Ā 
He enters into all the circumstances of His redeemed people, is ever present with them, and rejoices over them to do them good.Ā 

The angels obey Him,Ā 
the seraphim adore Him,Ā 
and all creation glorifies Him!Ā 

But though He is so exalted, so holy, and so unspeakably great . . .
Ā  He cares for you–as vile as you are.
Ā  He cares for you–as sinful as you are.
Ā  He cares for you–as depressed and discouraged as you are.Ā 
He cares for you. He cares for youĀ individually, and according to the circumstances in which you are placed.

What does He do?Ā 
HeĀ caresĀ for you!
HeĀ thinksĀ of you!
HeĀ watchesĀ over you!
HeĀ sympathizesĀ with you!
He feels the deepest interest in you!
He ever seeks your welfare!
He infallibly secures your good!

YourĀ miseryĀ touches His heart,
yourĀ needsĀ lie open to His view,
and yourĀ criesĀ enter into His ears!

He cares for you more than for the proudest monarch on his throne!Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is CONSTANT!Ā 
It is not fitful or occasional–but ever the same.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is PATERNAL!Ā 
It is the care of a father for his child–the child whom he tenderly loves, and for whose welfare he feels the deepest concern.Ā 

He cares for you, and His care is PERPETUAL!Ā 
He will never care for you less than He does at present.Ā 
When old age weakens you,Ā 
when poverty pinches you,Ā 
when death appears just before you–
He will care for you as much as He does at this moment.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is BENEFICIAL!Ā 
It prevents innumerable evils–and secures the greatest possible amount of good. His care is more advantageous than the care of the kindest father, though that father were monarch of the mightiest empire, and possessed unbounded wealth. The care of God is of more value than the care of all His creatures combined.Ā 

He cares for you–but His care is MYSTERIOUSLY EXERCISED!Ā 
It benefits us certainly–but secretly. It conceals itself behind the blessings it brings, and the evils it prevents.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is SPECIAL!Ā 
It is not the care which He has for the beasts which perish, or the unbelieving sinners who die under His frown.Ā 

He cares for you–and His care is PARTICULAR.Ā 
It is care which extends to the very hairs of your heads, which, are all numbered–and to all the events and occurrences of your life, however minute or commonplace!

Beloved, here is our comfort. We may lose the care of an earthly relative or dear friend by death–but the Lord ever lives; and while He lives, He . . .
Ā  ever loves us,
Ā  thoroughly knows us, and
Ā  never ceases to care for us!

Here is the ground of our confidence for the future. We know notĀ whereĀ we shall be, norĀ whatĀ we shall be–for we know not what a day may bring forth. But this we know, that God will care for us, and, caring for us–He will fulfill His precious promises to us.Ā 

If God cares for us, then . . .
Ā Ā  let us cast all our cares upon Him;Ā 
Ā Ā  let us live in daily fellowship with Him;Ā 
Ā Ā  let us seek all our supplies from Him.Ā 

If God cares for us, then let us not dishonor Him by nursing our doubts, or encouraging our fears–but let us trust in Him at all times, for . . .

Ā  His knowledge isĀ perfect.Ā 

We shall never be without aĀ divineĀ friend–however trying our circumstances may be. We shall never be without aĀ divineĀ guide–however perplexing or difficult our path may be. The care of God is more than the care of all the angelic hosts. If the care of God is not sufficient to preserve, supply, and satisfy us–then nothing is.

May the Lord help me to believe this precious truth, to realize it daily, and to pass through the present world under the impression, “I am the object of God’s tender, paternal, and ceaseless care!

If God gives me Himself–then it is more than as if He had given me the whole world, or ten thousand worlds like this! O how happy was the apostle Paul, who knowing God to be his portion could say, “I have learned to beĀ contentĀ whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learnedĀ the secret of being contentĀ in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in need!” Philippians 4:11-12

What dignity, what honor is conferred onĀ the man who has God for his portion!Ā I deserved to be stripped of everything, and to be turned out of God’s presence eternally penniless, wretched, and miserable. But instead of this, God in His free grace, in His infinite mercy–gives me . . .

The man of fortune ought not to live like the pauper. Just so, the Christian ought to live above other men.Ā

Ā  all my griefs and grievances,Ā

Mind what you are doing–you prosperous people, you who have nice homes, you who are hoarding up money. There is nothing permanent for you here on earth. Your home is in Heaven–your home is not here. If you find your treasure here–your heart will be here also.Ā 

You must keep all earthly treasures out of your heart.Ā 

Let Christ be your treasure, and let Him have your heart!

ThisĀ harmless, plastic, painted JesusĀ who has no spine, nor justice, nor wrath–but is a soft and pliant friend to everybody;Ā  if He is the only Christ, then we might as well close our Bibles, bar our doors and make a bakery or garage out of our church buildings!

The popular Christ being preached today–is not the Christ of the Bible, nor the Christ who will be our final Judge.Ā 

Jesus Christ our Lord, the Judge with the flaming eyes–is the one with whom we must deal. We cannot escape it.

“Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks: Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” Revelation 6:15-17Ā

Parents! YourĀ exampleĀ and life are a continual and powerful sermon which is always seen by your children!

Parents! Your children have anĀ everlasting inheritance of happinessĀ to attain–and it is that which you must bring them up for. They have anĀ endless miseryĀ to escape–and it is that which you must diligently teach them. If you don’t teach them to know God, and how to serve Him, and be saved, and to escape the flames of Hell–you teach them nothing, or worse than nothing.Ā It is in your hands to do them the greatest kindness or cruelty in all the world!Ā Help them to know God and to be saved, and you do more for them than if you helped them to be kings or princes.Ā 

If you neglect their souls, and bring them up them in ignorance, worldliness, ungodliness, and sin–youĀ betray them to the devil,the enemy of their souls, even as truly as if you sold them to him!Ā You sell them to be slaves to Satan!Ā You betray them to him who will deceive them and abuse them in this life–and torment them in eternity!

If you saw but a burning furnace, much more the flames of Hell–would you not think that man or womanĀ more fit to be called a devil than a parent, who could find in their hearts to cast their child into it? WhatĀ monsters then of inhumanityĀ are you, who read in Scripture what is the way to Hell, and who they are that God will deliver up to Satan, to be tormented by him–and yet will bring up your children in that very way, and will not take pains to save them from it!

If you love them, show it in those things on which their everlasting welfare depends.Ā Do not say you love them, and yet lead them unto Hell!Ā If you do not love them, yet do not be so unmerciful to them as to damn them! You cannot possibly do more to damn them, than to bring them up in . . .
Ā  ignorance,
Ā  carelessness,
Ā  worldliness,
Ā  sensuality and
Ā  ungodliness!
There is no other way to Hell. And yet, will you bring them up in such a life–and say that you do not desire to damn them?Ā 

But if you train up your children in ungodliness, you may as well say thatĀ you intend to have them damned!Ā And is not the devil more excusable, for dealing thus cruelly to your children–than you who are their parents, who are bound by nature to love them, and prevent their misery?

Let me seriously speak to the hearts of those careless and ungodly parents, who neglect the holy education of their children.Ā Oh, do not be so unmerciful to those who you have brought into the world!Ā Oh, pity and help the souls that you have defiled and undone! Have mercy on the souls that must perish in Hell, if they are not saved! Oh help them who have . . .

I do not wonder that so many are deceived, when I see the careless way in which they deal with their souls. When men have to do with theirĀ estates, they are very careful; they pay a lawyer to go back over the title-deeds perhaps for two or three hundred years. InĀ tradeĀ they will hurry hither and thither to attend to their commercial engagements; they would not launch into speculations, nor would they run great risks.Ā 

But theĀ soul, the poor soul–how menĀ playĀ with it as a toy, andĀ despiseĀ it as if it were worthless! Two or three minutes in the morning when they first roll out of bed; two or three odd minutes in the evening, when they are nearly asleep–the fag-ends of the day given to their souls, and all the best part given to the body!Ā 

And then, with what indifference do you lend your ears too often to the preaching of the Word! It is an old song–you have heard it so many times.Ā Heaven has become a trifle to you, Hell is almost a jest, eternity an empty notion, and death but a bugbear!

Alas! it is a marvel that there are not more deceived. The wonder is that any find the gate, that any discover eternal life, when we are so, so mad, so foolish, so insane–as to trifle where we ought to be solemnly in earnest; and to play and toy–where the whole heart should be given to a work of such everlasting importance. God help us, since it is so easy to be deceived–to search, and watch, and look, and test, and try, that we be not found castaways at the last!

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.Ā But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into Hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!” Luke 12:4-5

One thing that demands our attention in these verses, isĀ Christ’s warning against the fear of man.Ā “Do not be afraid,” He says, “of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.”

But He not only tells us whom we oughtĀ notĀ to fear–but of whom weĀ oughtĀ to be afraid. “Fear Him,” Jesus says, “Fear Him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into Hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!” The manner in which the lesson is conveyed is very striking and impressive. Twice over the exhortation is enforced. “Fear Him!” says our Lord. “Yes, I tell you, fear Him!”

TheĀ fear of manĀ is one of the greatest obstacles which stand between the soul and Heaven. “What will others say of me? What will they think of me? What will others do to me?” How often these little questions have turned the balance against the soul, and kept men bound hand and foot by sin and the devil! Thousands would never hesitate a moment to storm a breach–who dare not face the laughter of relatives, neighbors and friends.

Now if theĀ fear of manĀ has such influence in these times–then how much greater must its influence have been in the days when our Lord was upon earth! If it is hard to follow Christ through ridicule and scornful words–then how much harder must it have been to follow Him through prisons, beatings, scourgings, and violent deaths! All these things our Lord Jesus knew well. No wonder that He cries,Ā “Do not be afraid!”

What is the best remedy against the fear of man?Ā How are we to overcome this powerful feeling, and break theĀ chainsĀ which it throws around us? There is no remedy like that which our Lord recommends. We must supplant the fear ofĀ manĀ by a higher and more powerful principle–the fear ofĀ God. We must look away from those who can only hurt the body–to Him who has all dominion over the soul. We must turn our eyes from those who can only injure us in the life that now is–to Him who can condemn us to eternal misery in the life to come. Armed with this mighty principle, we shall not play the coward. Seeing Him that is invisible–we shall find the lesser fear melting away before the greater, and the weaker fear before the stronger.

“I fear God,” said Colonel Gardiner, “and therefore there is no one else that I need fear.” It was a noble saying of martyred Bishop Hooper, when a Roman Catholic urged him to save his life by recanting at the stake, “Life is sweet and death is bitter. But eternal life is more sweet–and eternal death is more bitter!”

Consider what those things are, which engross your affections, and which tempt you to neglect Christ and your salvation.

Have you found a better friend than Christ, or a more substantial and lasting happiness than His eternal salvation?Ā 

Oh! whatĀ triflesĀ andĀ vanities, whatĀ dreamsĀ andĀ shadowsĀ are men pursuing—while they neglect the important realities of the eternal world!Ā 

If crowns and kingdoms, if all the riches, glories, and pleasures of this present world were ensured to you—as a reward for making light of Christ, you would even then make the most foolish bargain possible; for what are these in the grand scale—when compared to eternal joy, or eternal misery! “What is a man profited, if he shall gain even the whole world, and lose his own soul!”Ā 

But you cannot realistically hope for the ten thousandth part of these worldly trifles! And will you cast away your souls for such a pittance?Ā 

Alas! what does the richest, the highest, the most voluptuous sinner do—but lay upĀ treasures of wrathĀ against the day of wrath! Oh how will the unhappy creatures torture themselves forever with the most cutting reflections, for selling their Savior and their souls—for such trifles! Let your sins and earthly enjoyments save you then, if they can! Then go and cry to theĀ godsĀ you have chosen; let them deliver you in the day of your damnation!Ā 

The time is hastening on, when you will not think so lightly of Christ and salvation. Oh, sirs, when God shall commissionĀ DEATHĀ to tear your guilty souls out of your bodies, when devils shall drag you away to the place of torment, when you find yourselves condemned to everlasting fire by that Savior whom you now neglect—what would you then give for a Savior!Ā 

When you see that theĀ worldĀ has deserted you, that yourĀ companionsĀ in sin have deceived both themselves and you, and all yourĀ merry daysĀ are over forever—would you notĀ thenĀ give ten thousand worlds for Christ!!

And now, dear immortal souls! Whenever you spend another prayerless, thoughtless day; whenever you give yourselves up to sinful pleasures, or an over-eager pursuit of the world—may your conscience become your preacher, and sting you with these solemn truths!Ā 

I cannot but fear, after all, that some of you, as usual, will continue careless and impenitent.Ā Well, when you are suffering the punishment of this sin in hell, remember that you were warned, and acquit me from beingĀ accessoryĀ to your eternal ruin!

And when we all appear before the supreme Judge, and I am called to give an account of my ministry: when I am asked, “Did you warn these creatures of their danger? Did you lay before them their guilt in making light of these things?” You will hear me answer, “Yes, Lord, I warned them in the best manner I could—but they would not believe me; they would not regard what I said!”Ā 

Oh sirs, must I give in this accusation against any ofĀ you? No, rather have mercy on yourselves—that I may give an account of you with joy, and not with grief!

Though we are too apt to think that we are not accountable for ourĀ words—He who is to be our Judge, has plainly told us that “forĀ every careless wordĀ which men speak, they shall give an account in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36

“For God will bring every deedĀ into judgment, includingĀ every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:14

What astonishing discoveries will this trial ofĀ every hidden thingĀ make!Ā 

On the one hand—whatĀ noble dispositionsĀ which never shone in full beauty to mortal eyes! WhatĀ generous purposesĀ crushed in embryo for lack of power to execute them! WhatĀ pious and noble actionsĀ concealed under the veil of modesty, or misconstrued by ignorance and prejudice! WhatĀ affectionate aspirations, whatĀ devout exercises of heart, which lay open only to theĀ eyes of Omniscience, are now brought to full light, and receive the approbation of the Supreme Judge before the assembled universe”!

But on the other hand—what works ofĀ shameĀ andĀ darknessĀ are then revealed! What hidden things of dishonesty! What dire secrets of treachery, hypocrisy, lewdness, and various forms of wickedness—all artfully and industriously concealed from human sight! What horrid exploits of sin now burst to light in all their hellish colors—to the confusion of the guilty, and the astonishment and horror of the universe!

Surely theĀ history of mankindĀ must then appear likeĀ the annals of hell—or the biography of devils!Ā Then theĀ mask of deceitĀ will be torn off—and menĀ will appear in their true characters. Their hearts will be, as it were, turned outwards—and all theirĀ secretsĀ exposed to full view!

The design of this judicial inquiry will not be to inform the omniscient Judge—but to convince all worlds of the justice of His proceedings. And this design renders it necessary that all these ‘secret things’ should be laid open to their sight, that they may see the grounds upon which He passes sentence.

Does not the prospect of such a ‘revealing’ fill some of you with horror? For many of your actions, and especially of yourĀ thoughts—will not bear the light. How would it confound you, if all your secret thoughts were now all published, even in the small circle of your friends! My soul, meditate for a few moments on what JesusĀ isĀ to you, and what Jesus hasĀ doneĀ for you. Look back and glance at theĀ circumstancesĀ in which He found you — and theĀ deliveranceĀ which He wrought for you.

1. TheĀ circumstancesĀ in which Jesus found you.Ā Jesus found meĀ out of the way. God by His law had marked out a way in which His creatures should walk — its character was holiness, and its end His glory. But all we like sheep had gone astray, we had turned every one to his own way. We were in the path of death and destruction, and on the way to Hell.Ā 

We were not only out of the way — but we wereĀ enslaved. We were . . .
Ā  slaves ofĀ sin,
Ā  the drudges of theĀ world, and
Ā  led captive by theĀ DevilĀ at his will.Ā 

We wereĀ diseased — as well as enslaved. We wereĀ leprousĀ from head to foot. We had theĀ plague of the heart!Ā The whole head was sick, and the whole heart was faint.Ā 

We wereĀ imprisoned, as well as diseased. We were shut up in unbelief and sin. Our cell was cold and damp, dark and narrow — and our imprisonment was not merely for a few years — it was forever!Ā 

We wereĀ dead, though still conscious, and to some things alive. Dead in trespasses and sins.Ā 

In this state we were — and we loved it well. We neither desired, nor sought deliverance.Ā Left to ourselvesĀ . . .
Ā  we would haveĀ wanderedĀ on in darkness, until we had perished in our sins;Ā 
Ā  we would have continued theĀ slavesĀ of sin and Satan forever;
Ā  ourĀ diseaseĀ would have preyed upon our vitals to all eternity;Ā 
Ā  ourĀ prisonĀ walls would have enclosed us still;Ā 
Ā  we would have remainedĀ deadĀ in sin,Ā 
Ā  we would have suffered all the pangs ofĀ damnationĀ forever!

2. TheĀ deliveranceĀ which Jesus wrought for you.Ā Jesus saved me!

He saved me from theĀ roaring lion, who goes about seeking to devour me!

He saved me fromĀ my raging lusts, so that sin shall not have dominion over me!

He saved me fromĀ righteous wrath, and I, being justified by His blood, shall be saved from wrath through Him!

He saved me fromĀ death, the ‘king of terrors,’ depriving theĀ monsterĀ of his sting, and giving me the victory over him!

He has also saved me from theĀ flaming furnace of Hell — from that lake of fire, and thoseĀ floods of flameĀ in which the lost must welter forever!

See the cause of my happiness — 
I have a Savior!Ā 

A Savior who is divine.Ā 
A Savior who has ever loved me.Ā 
A Savior who lived, labored, and died for me.Ā 
A Savior who pleads for me before the throne of His Father.Ā 
A Savior who is in His Father’s house, preparing a place for me.Ā

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account!” Hebrews 4:13

Take heed of what men call secret sins. There are only too many who continue in wickedness, because as they think, no one knows how wicked they are. They are drunkards–but it is in the night. They are immoral–but it is in the dark. Their mystery of iniquity trades in the works of darkness and in the dark. Indeed, if men could sin and no eye see them–then they might sin securely; but this is a falsehood as well as a mistake.

Once a young maiden was tempted to be unchaste. The person who solicited her, promised to do great things for her if she would yield.

“I will,” he said, “do anything for you!”

“Will you?” she said, “then hold your hand in this fire!”

“Oh, that is unreasonable!” he answered.

“But,” she replied, “it is much more unreasonable that I should burn forever in Hell for your sake! Who would venture his soul to eternal torment–to gratify his own or another’s pleasure and lust?”

We cannot escape God’s sight–any more than we can escape His judgment. He sees us, though like Adam and Eve we cover ourselves with fig-leaves. And He will one day call to us, as He did to them, “Sinner–where are you?”

You cannot flee from His presence. You may more easily hide from yourselves–than from God.

I hope you will say, for I am sure you will see cause to do so, “How shall I do this wickedness–and sin against God!”

Those who mock at sin, are worse than fools and madmen!

Tell them, as Lot told his sons-in-law of the danger and judgments which hang over their head–and, as with Lot, you seem to them as one who jokes. Genesis 19:14. They laugh at it, as if God were not in earnest when He threatens sinners–and as if those who preach against sin were deranged.Ā 

“To do evil, is like sport to a fool!” Proverbs 10:23.

There are some who sport themselves on their way to Hell–as if sin were but a recreation! What fools are they–who laugh at their own folly and destruction! It is a devilish nature in us, to mock at the calamity of others–but to laugh at our own calamity, seems to be worse than devilish!

There are many, too many, who mourn under affliction–yet laugh over their sins! They sigh and weep when they feel any burden on their body–but make merry at that which destroys their soul! Can anything be more mad than this–to laugh, mock and make sport at that which eternally wrongs and damns their own souls!

The wicked laugh over their sin now. But if they do not repent–then they will weep forever in Hell over it!

I look up to Heaven and there see the blessed and only Potentate, the Creator and Upholder of all things, the infinite and eternal Sovereign of the universe–governing His vast kingdom with uncontrollable power, in a manner perfectly wise and holy and just and good. In this Being, I see my Creator, my Preserver, my unwearied Benefactor–to whom I am indebted for everything which I possess.

And what does this Being see–what has He seen, in me? He sees a frail worm of the dust, who is of yesterday and knows nothing, who cannot take a single step without making mistakes, who is wholly incompetent to guide himself, and who, by his own folly, is self-destroyed. He has seen this frail, blind, erring worm, presumptuously daring to criticize and censure His proceedings, attempting to interfere in His government of the universe; and trying to set up his own perverse will against the will of his Creator, his Sovereign, and his God; his own ignorance–against divine omniscience, and his own folly–against infinite wisdom.

Should an angel who knew nothing of our characters, but who had heard of the blessings which God has bestowed on us, visit this world–would he not expect to find every part of it resounding with the praises of God and His love? Would he not expect to hear old and young, parents and children–all blessing God for the glad tidings of the gospel?

How, then, would he be grieved and disappointed! How astonished would he be to find that Being whom he had ever heard praised in the most rapturous strains by all the bright armies of Heaven–slighted, disobeyed, and dishonored by His creatures on earth!

O, then, let us strive to wipe away this foul stain–this disgrace to our race and our world.

Let not this world be the only place, except Hell–where God is not praised.

Let us not be the only creatures, except devils–who refuse to praise Him!

How apt are many at the sight of a rich worldling—to envy him for what he has. But, for my part, I rather pity him for what he lacks!

He has a talent—but it lacks improvement;
he has a lamp—but it lacks oil;
he has a soul—but it lacks grace;
he has the creature—but he lacks the Creator;
he has a mansion—but he lacks heaven.

In his life, he floats upon a torrent of vanity—which rolls along into an ocean of vexation!

And after death, it will be said of him, “Take this unprofitable servant, bind him hand and foot, and cast him into outer darkness! Consign his soul to the eternal lake of fire and brimstone!”

Where now is the object of your envy?

It is not his gold that can then rescue him,

Therefore, if he is worth the envying—then who can be worth the pitying?

If this is happiness—then give me misery!

Most people are not seeking to escape from theĀ wrath to come, they are busy in worldly thingsĀ while hell is near them. They are like idiotsĀ catching flies on board a ship which is in theĀ very act of sinking!

We see many people busy about their bodies,Ā decorating themselves, when their soul is in ruin.Ā They are like a man painting the front door,Ā when the house is in flames! Men are in a restless pursuit after satisfaction in earthly things.

They will hunt the purlieus of wealth, they will travelĀ the pathways of fame, they will dig into the minesĀ of knowledge, they will exhaust themselves in theĀ deceitful delights of sin, and, finding them all toĀ be vanity and emptiness, they will become veryĀ perplexed and disappointed.

But they will still continue their fruitless search.

Though wearied, they still stagger forward under theĀ influence of spiritual madness, and though there isĀ no result to be reached except that of everlastingĀ disappointment, yet they press forward with much ardor.

Living for today is enough for them– that they areĀ still alive, that they possess present comforts andĀ present enjoyments, this contents the many.

As for the future, they say, “Let it take care of itself.”

As for eternity, they leave others to care for itsĀ realities; the present life is enough for them.

Their motto is, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

They have no forethought for their eternal state;Ā the present hour absorbs them.

Carnal minds pursue with all their might earth’s vanities,Ā and when they are wearied in their pursuit they but changeĀ their direction, and continue the idle chase.

They turn to another and another of earth’s brokenĀ cisterns, hoping to find water where not a drop wasĀ ever discovered yet.

The Gimmick gospel

The nickels and noses racket!

The average pastor is no longer a powerful, plain preacher–but a polite, polished politician!

We live in a time of big meetings, big churches, big church buildings, big preachers, and big church budgets. The failure or success of a church and its pastor–is judged by the number of nickels and noses that they have. In all too many cases, there is seen in this more Satanic pride, than spiritual piety.

In the craze for nickels and noses churches have replaced preachers and pastors, with puppeteers and pranksters. The gospel of Christ has been superseded by gimmicks, gadgets, and games. Psychology has taken the place of Holy Spirit conviction. The faith has been displaced for finance, fun, and foolishness. Church discipline has been relegated to the background, in order to swell the size of the church with religious hypocrites who might give a little money to the church now and then.

The nickels and noses racket has filled our churches with unconverted persons. We have far more churchianity than Christianity. Many church members are white-washed–but they are not blood-washed. Their names are upon the church roll–but they are not found in the Lamb’s book of life. Many have been reformed–but they have not been re-born. Many have been confirmed–but they have not been converted to Christ. There are so many lost people in our churches, that you cannot tell the difference between a church member and the unconverted. The reason is, because there is no difference. Both are headed to Hell as fast as time can carry them!

It has produced icy services–and cold, callous, complacent church members. Look at the average church! They have their robed choir, their cut and dried program, and their intellectual preaching. They have a beautiful edifice. They have all the organization and rituals one could ask for–but in most cases it is Spiritless! We have form without reality; we have organization without power; we have profession without possession. We have a form of godliness–without the power of it. We have religion without life.

It has caused pastors to spend more time worrying with goats, than feeding the sheep. The pastor nowadays must provide a spiritual diet for people who have no spiritual appetite. Like Ezekiel of old (Ezekiel 37:1-10), he must preach to dead, dry bones–but without the blessings which Ezekiel experienced. These dry, dead bones can’t hear–yet the pastor must keep preaching and pretend that someone is listening. These dry, dead bones do not grow in grace–for the dead do not grow. These baptized bones are in no way sensitive to the appeals made to them from the Scriptures by the pastor. They watch the clock on Sunday morning, hoping the pastor will preach a short sermon so they can soon go home and do what they really enjoy.

This idea has given us the gimmick gospel. Most church members want to be entertained–instead of instructed in the Word of God. They have far more delight in the gospel of amusement–than the gospel of the atonement. Gospel celebrities must be brought in to entertain these worldly church members. These members love to hear these clerical comedians who mix a few verses of Scripture with a large amount of humor. Special singing groups must be brought in too. These have the same dress, music, hair style, and manners of any rock and roll group. Our church services nowadays have become a carefully produced theatrical production for the delight of carnal Christians and religious rascals. The only difference between this entertainment and that in the local nightclub, is that it has a religious flavor! But they say it must be done to get nickels and noses!

While there are some exceptions, most big churches are worldly churches. They have high carnality–and low spirituality. Truth is very scarce in such fashionable churches, because the Word of God has been compromised to keep nickels and noses.

The biggest loser!

The biggest loser!

There are usually two sides:

the one dangerous—the other safe; the one is uncertain—and the other is sure.

It is always the wisest—to be found on the safe side!

Look at the unbeliever:
He denies the Bible to be God’s book.
He walks by his own reason.
He gratifies his senses and his lusts.
He lives in sin.
He must soon die.
He has no Savior.
He has no true hope.

If the Bible is false—then he is safe; BUT if the Bible is true—then he is damned forever!

He is certainly not on the safe side!

There are many things in the Bible which he does not like.
He is prejudiced against it.
It never prophecies good concerning him—but always evil.
It requires him to change his present sinful course—but he loves it.
He loves sin—and the Bible condemns it.
He gratifies the lusts of the flesh—and the Bible bids him to mortify them.

In a word, there is as much opposition between the Bible and him—as between light and darkness, holiness and sin, truth and error. Therefore he hates it!

At the best, with him all is uncertain, unsatisfactory, and vexatious.

He is certainly not on the safe side!

Now look at the true Christian:
He believes the Bible to be from God. He has examined it. He has evidence of its inspiration in his heart. He fully believes it.
What the Bible says of himself as a sinner—he knows to be true.
What it says of Jesus as a Savior—he has proved to be a fact.
As guilty—he has applied to God for pardon, and obtained it.
As impure—he has sought the cleansing operations of the Holy Spirit, and has experienced them.
His guilt is gone—therefore he has no slavish fears.
His soul is justified—therefore he has peace with God.
He approves of the inspired precepts—and regulates his life by them.
He carries his cares to God—and is sustained under them.
He realizes that God is his Friend, his Father, and his everlasting Portion.
He is peaceful.
He is often happy.
To him death has no sting—and eternity has no terror.
He knows Jesus as his Savior—and trusts in Him.
He knows God as his Father—and walks with Him.
He knows the Holy Spirit as his comforting Teacher—and listens to Him.

He is, perhaps, more tried than the unbeliever—but he has supports, consolations, and pleasures—of which the unbeliever knows nothing. He lives to bless others, to honor God, to prepare for a glorious immortality.

He would not change his worst day—for the unbeliever’s best day!

He is on the safe side!

If the unbeliever should be right—then the Christian is no loser.

But if the Christian is right—and he is—then the unbeliever is the biggest loser—an infinite loser!

Reader, on which side are you? There is but one safe side.

There is no safety for a sinner now—but at the Cross!

There will be no safety at death and judgment—but in Christ!

He who is on the safe side now—will be on the safe side then!

There will be no changing sides then!

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit upon His glorious throne! All the nations will be gathered in His presence, and He will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at His right hand—and the goats at His left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father—inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world!’ (the safe side)Ā Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones—into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons!’ (the perilous side)Ā And they will go away into eternal punishment—but the righteous will go into eternal life!” Matthew 25:31-46

More fit to be called a devil than a parent!

Parents! Your example and life are a continual and powerful sermon, which is always seen byĀ your children!

Parents! Your children have an everlasting inheritance of happiness to attain–and it is that which you must bring them up for. They have an endless misery to escape–and it is that which you must diligently teach them. If you don’t teach them to know God, and how to serve Him, and be saved, and to escape the flames of hell–you teach them nothing, or worse than nothing. It is in your hands to do them the greatest kindness or cruelty in all the world! Help them to know God and to be saved, and you do more for them than if you helped them to be kings or princes. If you neglect their souls, and bring them up them in ignorance, worldliness, ungodliness, and sin–you betray them to the devil, the enemy of souls, even as truly as if you sold them to him! You sell hem to be slaves to Satan! You betray them to him who will deceive them and abuse them in this life–and torment them in eternity!

If you saw but a burning furnace, much more the flamesĀ of hell–would you not think that man or woman more fit to be called a devil than a parent, who could find in their hearts to cast their child into it? What monsters then of inhumanity are you, who read in Scripture which is the way to hell, and who they are that God will deliver up to Satan, to be tormented by him–and yet will bring up your children in that very way, and will not take pains to save them from it!

If you love them, show it in those things on which their everlasting welfare depends. Do not say you love them–and yet lead them unto hell! If you do not love them, yet do not be so unmerciful to them as to damn them! You cannot possibly do more to damn them, than to bring them up in . ..

ignorance,
carelessness,
worldliness,
sensuality and
ungodliness!

There is no other way to hell. And yet, will you bring them up in such a life–and say that you do not desire to damn them?

But if you train up your children in ungodliness, you may as well say that you intend to have them damned! And is not the devil more excusable, for dealing thus cruelly to your children–than you who are their parents, who are bound by nature to love them, and prevent their misery?

Let me seriously speak to the hearts of those careless and ungodly parents, who neglect the holy education of their children. Oh, do not be so unmerciful to those who you have brought into the world! Oh, pity and help the souls that you have defiled and undone! Have mercy on the souls that must perish in hell, if they are not saved! Oh help them that have so many enemies to assault them! Help them that have so many temptations to pass through; and so many difficulties to overcome; and so severe a judgment to undergo! Help them that are so weak, and so easily deceived and overthrown! Help them speedily; before sin hardens them, and Satan makes a stronger fortress in their hearts!

Oh be not cruel to their souls! Do not sell them to Satan, and that for nothing! Do not betray them not by your ungodly negligence to hell! If any of them will perish, let it not be because of you–who are so much bound to do them good. The undoing of your children’s souls is a work much fitter for Satan, than for their parents!
