The family disease!

(J.C. Ryle)

“He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves, that they were righteous.” Luke 18:9Ā

The sin which our Lord here denounces, is “self-righteousness.”

We are all naturally self-righteous. It isĀ the family diseaseĀ of all the children of Adam. From the highest to the lowest–we think more highly of ourselves than we ought to. We secretly flatter ourselves that we are not as bad as some, and that we have something toĀ meritĀ the favor of God.

We forget the plain testimony of Scripture:
Ā  “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.”
Ā  “What is man, that he could be pure; or one born of woman, that he could be righteous?”
Ā  “There is no one righteous, not even one!”

The true cure for self-righteousness, is self-knowledge.Ā Once let the eyes of our understanding be opened by the Spirit–and we shall talk no more of our own goodness. Once let us see what sin there is in our own hearts, and what the holy law of God requires–and self-conceit will die. We shall lay our hand on our mouths, and cry with the leper,Ā “Unclean, unclean!”Ā LeviticusĀ  13:45

“I have not come to call the righteous, butĀ sinnersĀ to repentance.” Luke 5:32

Christ died for theĀ ungodly!”Ā Romans 5:6

We would be forever contented with the garlic and flesh-pots of Egypt!

We would be forever contented with the garlic and flesh-pots of Egypt!

(Thomas Case, “The Rod and the Word, A Treatise on Afflictions” 1653)

One lesson which God teaches us in the school of affliction, is how to prize and long for Heaven. In our prosperity, “when we wash our steps in butter, and the rock pours us out rivers of oil” (Job 29:6)–we could sit down with the present world, and say, “It is good for us to be here; let us build dwellings here.”

WhileĀ lifeĀ is sweet–thenĀ deathĀ is bitter.Ā

Heaven itself is no enticement–while the world gives us her alluring baits.Ā

But when poverty and imprisonment, reproach and persecution, sickness and sore diseases–pinch and vex our hearts with a variety of afflictions–then we are not so fond of the creature, and are pleased to parley withĀ death, and takeĀ HeavenĀ into our consideration.

God by putting us into the school of affliction, takes off our hearts by degrees from this present world, and makes us look homeward. Being burdened, we groan–and with the dove we return to the ark, when the world is sinking round about us.Ā

We would be forever contented with the garlic and flesh-pots of Egypt
–if God did not set cruel taskmasters over us to double our burdens. And when God thus lessens our esteem of the world–He reveals to us the excellency of heavenly comforts, and draws out the desires of the soul to Himself:Ā
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:1-2
“Even so, come Lord Jesus!” Revelation 22:20

Afflictions make Heaven appear as Heaven indeed!Ā

To the weary, Heaven is rest;Ā
to the banished, it is home;Ā
to the scorned and reproached, it is glory;
to the captive, it is liberty;Ā
to the soldier, it is victory;
to the hungry, it is hidden manna;Ā
to the thirsty, it is the fountain of life;Ā
to the grieved, it is fullness of joy; andĀ
to the mourner, it is pleasures forevermore.Ā
In a word, to those who have lain upon the dunghill of affliction, and walked in holiness–Heaven is the throne on which they shall sit and reign with Christ forever and ever!

That Man of sorrows, is the Savior of the world!

That Man of sorrows, is the Savior of the world!

(Gardiner Spring)

O! Who was it that suffered?Ā  What did He suffer?Ā  For whom did He suffer?Ā

Think of Him–the Father’s fellow, and the church’s Beloved.Ā

Think of the Garden and the Cross, and see how they demonstrate on the one hand, the enormity of our guilt; and on the other, the force of His almighty love.Ā

Think of the debased and abject character of those for whom He died–depraved men, and the enemies of God!Ā

That Man of sorrows, is the Savior of the world!Ā

That naked, bleeding victim–is the mighty Conqueror of death and Hell!Ā

O what triumphs of love and of holiness were there, when . . .
Ā  the earth trembled;
Ā  and the sun grew dark;
Ā  and the veil of the temple was rent in twain;
Ā  and the rocks broke asunder;
Ā  and the graves gave up their dead;
Ā  and Hell itself was moved with terror;
Ā  and the Great Redeemer exclaimed, “It is finished!”Ā

Christ is precious to all who believe!

AbrahamĀ “rejoiced to see Christ’s day, and he saw it and was glad.”

MosesĀ esteemed Him more precious than all the treasures of Egypt.

DavidĀ esteemed Him “fairer than the children of men.”

TheĀ ChurchĀ in her divine songs speaks of Him . . .Ā
Ā  as the “rose of Sharon and the lily of the valleys;”Ā
Ā  as “the chief among ten thousand and the altogether lovely One;”
Ā  and as the One whom “her soul loves.”

TheĀ wise menĀ of the East adored Him.

SimeonĀ took Him up in his arms, and said, “Now Lord, let you your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen Your salvation!”

And to holy men wherever found, Jesus is precious!Ā
“The upright love You!”Ā
“Whom having not seen, you love.”Ā
“To you who believe, He is precious!”

In all your duties and trials–He will be precious.

When the world loses its charms–He will become more glorious and lovely than ever.Ā

When death invades–He will become its mighty conqueror.

When you sleep beneath the clods of the valley–He will be the resurrection and the life.Ā

When the books shall be opened, and small and great shall stand before God, and the precious Savior shall come in the clouds, and you shall go to be forever with the Lord–He shall be doubly precious, and more and more precious through interminable ages!

They hope that they shall not have two Hells!Ā

(Thomas Case, “The Rod and the Word, A Treatise on Afflictions” 1653)

Because men suffer in this world–they assume they shall be freed from sufferings in the world to come.Ā
Because they have a Hell here–they imagine that they shall escape Hell hereafter.Ā

They hope that they shall not have two Hells!Ā

Poor, deluded soul! You may and must have two Hells. Cain, and Judas, and millions of reprobate men and women, have two Hells–one in this life, in torments of body–and another in the life to come, in unquenchable fire.Ā

You may have a prison on earth–and a dungeon in Hell.Ā
You may now lack a crumb of bread–and hereafter lack a drop of water.Ā
You may now be the reproach of men–and hereafter the scorn of God Himself.Ā

Affliction alone is not enough to evidence a man to be a saved man.Ā Blows may sooner break the neck, than the heart!Ā Afflictions are in themselves, the fruit of divine wrath–and therefore cannot possibly of themselves make the least argument of God’s love to the soul.Ā

God forbid that a man should take that for his security from Hell–which may be but the foretaste of Hell! Present afflictions, may be the pledge of endless misery.

In many cases it is to be feared that the cup of affliction, is a vial of wrath–and that the plagues of this life, are but some drops of that coming storm of fire and brimstone, wherein impenitent sinners shall be scorched and tormented forever!

God will rather fetch blood–than lose one of His sons!Ā

See and admire the wisdom, power and goodness of God–who can make His people better by their sufferings!

Behold, I show you a gospel mystery! God can . . .
Ā  extract gold, out of clay;
Ā  draw the richest wine, out of gall and wormwood;Ā
Ā  turn the greatest misery of the body, into the greatest good of the soul;Ā
Ā  turn the chastening itself, into a blessing;Ā
Ā  make the withered rod of affliction, to bud into a harvest of righteousness and peace!

The almond tree is said to be made fruitful byĀ driving nailsĀ into it, thereby letting out a noxious gum which hinders its fruitfulness. In the same way, God never intends more good to his children, than when He seems to deal most severely with them!Ā His discipline is sharp–but the end is sweet!Ā

O that the children of God in affliction, or entering upon sufferings–would sit down and dwell upon theĀ fruitĀ andĀ advantageĀ which God knows how to bring out of all their sorrows.Ā

Five sharp stings!

Five sharp stings!

(Thomas Watson, “A Divine Cordial” 1663)

Many love sin, more than God. “They are haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful, inventors of evil.” Romans 1:30Ā

What is there in sin–that any should love it?Ā

Sin is aĀ debt. “Forgive us ourĀ debts.” Matthew 6:12Ā
Sin is a debt which binds over to the wrath of God!Ā
And will you love sin? Does any man love to be in debt?Ā

Sin is aĀ disease. “Your whole head is injured, your whole heart is sick. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness–only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil.” Isaiah 1:5-6. And will you love sin? Will any man hug a disease? Will he love his plague sores?Ā

Sin is aĀ pollution. The apostle calls it “filthiness.” James 1:21. It is compared to leprosy and to poison of asps!Ā

Sin isĀ a hideous monster. Lust makes a man brutish–and malice makes him devilish! What is in sin to be loved? Shall we love deformity?Ā

God’s heart rises against sinners.Ā “My soulĀ loathedĀ them!” Zechariah 11:8Ā

Sin is anĀ enemy. It is compared to a “serpent”. Sin hasĀ five sharp stings:
Ā  shame,
Ā  guilt,
Ā  horror,Ā
Ā  death,
Ā  damnation!Ā

Will a man love that which seeks his death? Surely then it is better to love God than sin.Ā

God will save you–but sin will damn you!Ā Is he not a fool–who loves damnation!

ButĀ love to GodĀ will never let sin thrive in the heart. The love of God withers sin. TheĀ flower of loveĀ kills theĀ weed of sin!Ā How should we labor for that grace ofĀ love to God–which isĀ the only corrosive to destroy sin!

The false doctrine of universal redemption!

The false doctrine of universal redemption!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd gives His lifeĀ for the sheep!”Ā John 10:11

I would like to die talking of this blessed doctrine ofĀ substitutionary atonementĀ and I intend, by divine grace, to live proclaiming it, for it is the keystone of the Gospel! Jesus Christ literally took upon Himself the transgression and iniquity ofĀ His people, and was made a curse for them, seeing that they had fallen under the wrath of God! For them, He has taken away the penalty and the curse due to sin.Ā

The false doctrine of universal redemption–that Christ died for the damned in Hell and suffered the torment of those who afterwards are tormented forever–seems to me to be detestable, subversive of the whole Gospel, and destructive of the only pillar upon which our hopes can be built!Ā

Christ stood in the place of His elect–for them He made a full atonement–for them He so suffered that not a sin of theirs shall ever be laid at their door. As the Father’s love embraced them–so the death of His Son reconciled them.Ā

We hold most firmly the doctrine ofĀ particular redemption–that Christ loved His Church, and gave Himself for it.

The onlyĀ limitĀ of the atonement is in its design–and that design was that Christ should give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him.

“Christ also loved theĀ church, and gave Himself for her!” Ephesians 5:25Ā

What gives the world its fatal charms?

Grace logo

What gives the world its fatal charms?

(E.M. Bounds, “The World!”)

“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other–or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. YouĀ cannotĀ serve both God and Money.”Ā Luke 16:13

TheĀ worldĀ is one of the Christian’s enemies which must be fought and conquered on the way to Heaven. The Christian life is represented as a training school, in which to deny worldly desires is one part of its curriculum.Ā

There is no more fundamental statement in Scripture, than that the world is to be renounced by every true disciple of Christ–and that to love the world and the things of the world, puts us in open and standing enmity to God. By virtue of our love or friendship to the world–we are the enemies of God.

Christ Jesus lays it down as an obvious truth that between the world and His disciples, there would be hatred. To serve two opposing masters is impossible. The call of Christ when accepted and obeyed, becomes at once the secret and the source of the world’s hatred.

Jesus declares the native and inevitable enmity of the world to His followers: “The world has hated them, becauseĀ they are not of the world–even as I am not of the world.” Again, in His high-priestly prayer, He declares this distinct and eternal separation and conflict: “They are not of the world–even as I am not of the world.” By virtue of their relation to Christ–they are separated from, and are in conflict with, the world.

The love of the world is hostile to and destructive of, the love of God. The two cannot co-exist. Yet many modern church members and church goers are friends of the world–its advocates and lovers.

“You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore would be the friend of the world, makes himself an enemy of God!” James 4:4.Ā Friendship with the worldĀ is God’s greatest enemy. Love of the world violates our marriage vows to Jesus.

Nothing is more explicit than this, nothing is more commanding, authoritative and more exacting. “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him!” 1 John 2:15. Nothing is more offensive to God, nothing is more criminal, more abominable, more violative of the most sacred relationship of the soul with God.Ā

It remains true to this hour, that all the genuine disciples of Jesus are not of the world–but are chosenĀ outĀ of the world, haveĀ leftthe world, haveĀ renouncedĀ the world, and areĀ crucifiedĀ to the world.

What gives the world its fatal charms?
Ā What makes its enchantment so lethal? What makes it a deadly foe to Christ, and which poisons us against Heaven?

The world is the devil’s pawn. The world gets its deadly and fascinating snares from the devil. The world is not simply the ally, but is the instrument and the agent of Satan.Ā

The world’s opposition and enmity have been always against the Christian–and often itsĀ smilesĀ are more fatal than its hate!

We are as moths near a burning candle!

We are asĀ mothsĀ near a burning candle!

(Charles Spurgeon)

Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity!” Psalm 119:37Ā

Dear friends, do notĀ gazeĀ upon any sin . . .
Ā  forĀ lookingĀ breeds longing,Ā
Ā  andĀ longingĀ begets lusting,Ā
Ā  andĀ lustingĀ bringsĀ sinning!Ā

Keep your eyes right–and you may keep your heart right.Ā

If thatĀ first womanĀ had not looked upon the forbidden tree and seen “that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise,” she would not have plucked and eaten the forbidden fruit–and we would not have been the children of sin and sorrow!

O friends, if we begin toĀ look upon iniquity, we shall almost certainly fall! There are some sins that we poor, frail creatures cannot endure to look at.Ā We are asĀ mothsĀ near a burning candle–the only safety for us is to get out of the room and fly into the open air. But if we go near the candle–we shall certainly burn our wings and, perhaps, even destroy ourselves!Ā

Just so, we must take care that we do not getĀ used to sin.Ā I believe that even the common reading in the newspapers ofĀ accounts of evil thingsĀ is defilingĀ to us. If we habitually read such things, we shall come, at last, to think less and less of the coarser forms of vice than we ought to do.

Nothing can keep us away from theĀ fangs of sin, like falling into the embraces of Christ. Looking unto Jesus, is the great remedy against looking unto sin!Ā

Turn away my eyes from vanity, my Lord, by filling them full with a vision of Yourself and holding me spellbound with that grandest spectacle that eyes of men, or angels, or even of God, Himself ever saw–the spectacle of God Incarnate bearing our sin in His own body on the Cross!Ā

Keep your eyes fixed there–and all will be well.

Oh! what it cost Him! Price beyond all computing!Ā Heaven’s richest treasure–paid for worms of earth!Ā

Oh! when I see Him face to face, and behold those love-prints in His glorious body, what shall I feel? That will be Heaven–not one of harps and crowns, or of anything else–but JESUS and the open vision of His unveiled glories, the ineffable glories of Deity, and perfect beauties of humanity ever beaming with new effulgence in the person of our Bridegroom! If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is,Ā you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” John 15:19

There would be much moreĀ persecutionĀ than there is–if there were more real Christians. But we have become soĀ likeĀ the world, that the world does not hate us as it once did. Remember, my brethren, whoever you may be, thatĀ if there is no distinction between you and the world around you–then you may be certain that you are of the world. For, there must always be some marks in the children of God to distinguish them from the ungodly. There is a something in them which is not to be found in the best worldling–something which is not to be discovered in the most admirable carnal man. A something in their character which can be readily perceived and which marks them as belonging to another and higher race, the twice-born, the elect of God, eternally chosen by Him–and, therefore, made to beĀ choice onesĀ through the effectual working of His grace.Ā

Had he known me better!

Had he known me better!

(Frederick Marsh)

Humility is the queen of the Christian graces.Ā The excellence ofĀ humilityĀ is illustrated in the following Scriptures.Ā
Ā
1. Humility is the Flower of Grace–Ephesians 4:2. Humility walks consistently, loves generously, serves willingly, acts meekly, forgives heartily, forbears thoughtfully, and responds obediently.

2. Humility is the Soul of Contentment–Philippians 4:12. It feels that it does not deserve anything, therefore takes whatever comes with gratitude. It ever sings,Ā “O to grace how great a debtor!”

3. Humility is the Secret of Service–Acts 20:19. To serve the Lord with all humility of mind, is to have the bloom of consecration, the aroma of grace, the unction of love, the warmth of zeal, the ardor of faith, the walk of obedience, and the beauty of holiness.

4. Humility is the Badge of Obedience. The Lord’s command is, “Humble yourselves” (1 Peter 5:6), and it is not without meaning that it is to be “under the mighty hand of God.” We only know the mightiness of God’s hand–when we lieĀ lowĀ beneath it.

5. Humility is the Lesson of Grace. When we are yoked with Christ in God’s will, we are in the position to learn of Christ, who is “meek and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29). ToĀ talkĀ about humility, is to show we do not possess it; but to keep step with Christ, is to have it without knowing it.

6. The Mind of Humility. “In humility of mind, let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3). To see the best in others–is to find the worst in ourselves. Self-contemplation leads to self-congratulation, and that always fosters pride.

7. The Example of Christ. The mind of Christ is illustrated in that He “humbled Himself” (Philippians 2:8). He went down, before He was raised up. We need to pray: “Help us, O Lord, to deeper sink, that we may the higher rise.” The downward path is the upward one.

8. Humility is the Attire of Heaven. “BeĀ clothedĀ with humility” (1 Peter 5:5). This is a suit that is always in fashion–it never wears out, and it is always befitting. Humility is recognized by men, admired by angels, and loved by God.

9. Humility is the Securer of Blessing. “He gives more grace to the humble” (James 4:6), or as the margin, “A greater grace.” Whether an excelling grace, or “more” of the grace that excels–humility is its own reward, and is rewarded by the Lord’s commendation.

10. Humility is the Harbinger of Reward. “He who humbles himself shall be exalted” (Matthew 23:12). The heavier the cargo–the more the vessel is sunk into the water, and the greater its worth. When the fruit of humility causes the branch of the soul to bend in lowliness–the Heavenly Gardener plucks the fruit for the garner of His love!

There is a great importance in the way in which a man lives in his house.Ā It will not do to be a saint abroad–and a devil at home!Ā There are some of that kind. They are wonderfully sweet at a prayer meeting–but they are dreadfully sour to their wives and children. This will never do!Ā

Every genuine believer should say, and mean it,Ā “I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.”Ā It is in theĀ home, that we get the truest proof of godliness.

“What sort of a man is he?” said one to George Whitefield–and Whitefield answered, “I cannot say, for I neverĀ livedĀ with him.”Ā

That is the way to test a man–to live with him.

A Gospel which is according to men, will be welcomed by men–but it needs a Divine operation upon the heart and mind, to make a man willing to receive this distasteful gospel of the grace of God into his utmost soul!

Character

Grace logo

CharacterĀ

(John MacDuff)

CharacterĀ is the product of daily, hourly actions, words and thoughts:Ā
Ā  daily forgiveness,Ā
Ā  daily unselfishness,Ā
Ā  daily kindnesses,Ā
Ā  daily sympathies,Ā
Ā  daily charities,Ā
Ā  daily sacrifices for the good of others,Ā
Ā  daily struggles against temptation,Ā
Ā  daily submissiveness under trial.Ā
It is these, like the blending of colors in a picture–which constituteĀ a person’s character.

We so imperfectly read the engravings of His heart!

We so imperfectly read the engravings of His heart!

(Octavius Winslow)

“Christ died for theĀ ungodly!” Romans 5:6Ā

“God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were stillĀ sinners–Christ died for us!” Romans 5:8Ā

It is because we have such shallow views of God’sĀ love–that we have such defective views of God’sĀ dealings. We blindly interpret the symbols of HisĀ providence–becauseĀ we so imperfectly read the engravings of His heart.

“When we can’t trace His hand–we must trust His heart!”

We must test all our pleasures and amusements by this rule:

Grace logo

We must test all our pleasures and amusements by this rule:

(J.R. Miller)

“Lovers ofĀ pleasure–rather than lovers of God; having a form of godliness–but denying its power.” 2 Timothy 3:4-5Ā

Is theĀ love of pleasure and amusementĀ growing on you–gaining the power and authority over you?Ā

Is it dulling the keenness of your zest for spiritual pleasures?Ā

Is it making Bible study, prayer, communion with Christ, and meditation upon holy themes–less sweet enjoyments than they once were?Ā

Is it making your hunger and thirst for righteousness and for God–less intense?Ā

Is it interfering with the comfort and blessing which you used to find in church services, or in Christ’s work?Ā

If so, there is only one thing to do–hurry . . .
Ā  to return to God,
Ā  to abandon the pleasure or amusement which is imperiling your soul, and
Ā  to find in Christ, the joy which the world cannot give, and which never harms any aspect of life.Ā

We must test all our pleasures and amusements by this rule:Ā Are they helping us to grow into Christ-likeness and spiritual beauty?

“All things are lawful–but not all things areĀ profitable. All things are lawful–but not all thingsĀ edify.” 1 Corinthians 10:23Ā

If God is our Father

If God is our Father

(James Smith, “The Children’s Privileges!”)

“You are sons of the living God!” Hosea 1:10

To have God for our Father, is the greatest honor conceivable–and it is an infinite source of comfort and joy!Ā

If God is our FatherHe will loveĀ us with a strong and tender love!Ā He may try us and hide His face from us, to correct us for our follies–but He will still love us. Nothing shall separate His child from His love, or sever the bond which unites us to Himself.Ā

If God is our Father–He will bear with our numerous and painful infirmities.Ā Because we are HisĀ children–He will put the best construction upon everything. For, “Like as a Father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who love Him. He knows our frame. He remembers that we are dust.” He will accept our imperfect services, because we are butĀ children. He knows our weakness, ignorance, and failings; and He also knows our desire to please Him. And when we can onlyĀ desire–He accepts the will for the deed.

If God is our Father–He will provide for and take care of usmakingĀ provisionĀ for us on earth, while He reserves ourĀ portionĀ for Heaven. Will an earthly father leave his child to lack–while he has plenty, and can supply him with the greatest ease? He will not! Neither will our Heavenly Father; but He will supply all our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus!

If God is our Father–He will also protect us from all evilsspiritual and temporal.Ā
SinĀ
shall not have dominion over us,Ā
SatanĀ
shall not overcome us,Ā
theĀ worldĀ shall not destroy us
–for God will protect us!
He will keep us by His power, through faith unto salvation.

If God is our Father–He will reveal His mind and will to us for our comfort and salvation. He may hide the mysteries of the kingdom from the wise and prudent–but He will reveal them unto His babes. (Matthew 11:25) He will send the Comforter, even the Spirit of truth, who will guide us into all truth.Ā

If God is our Father–He will give us freedom of access into His presence with confidence–so that we may carry all our sins, sorrows, troubles, and temptations to Him, and lay them at His feet; feeling that we have to do with a Father–one who loves us, pities us, and delights to bless us!

If God is our Father–He will make all things work together for our good.Ā
GoodĀ things–such as mercies, blessings, and comforts.Ā
BadĀ things–such as sickness, poverty, reproach, persecution, bereavements, death.
ALL shall work our good, and issue in our eternal welfare.Ā

If we are children of God–we are heirs of every promise in His Book, and joint-heirs with Jesus Himself!Ā He will give us a Father’s blessing–a blessing worthy of His greatness, majesty, and glory. And He will keep us safe in every danger, and from every foe; so that we shall never perish–but possess and enjoy eternal life.

‘I will be a Father to you,Ā and you will be My sons and daughters,’Ā says theĀ Lord Almighty.”Ā 2 Corinthians 6:18

True Christianity is a fight!

Grace logo

True Christianity is a fight!

(J.C. Ryle, “Holiness“)

“Fight the good fight of faith!”Ā 1 Timothy 6:12

True Christianity! Let us mind that word “true.” There is a vast quantity of religion current in the world which is not true, genuine Christianity. There are thousands of men and women who go to churches and chapels every Sunday and call themselves Christians. They make a “profession” of faith in Christ. Their names are on the baptismal register. They are reckoned Christians while they live. They are married with a Christian marriage service. They mean to be buried as Christians when they die.Ā

But you never see any “fight” about their religion! Of spiritualĀ strifeĀ andĀ exertionĀ andĀ conflictĀ andĀ self-denialĀ andĀ watchingĀ andĀ warring–they know literally nothing at all. Such Christianity may satisfyĀ man, and those who say anything against it may be thought very hard and uncharitable–but it certainly is not the Christianity of the Bible. It is not the religion which the Lord Jesus founded, and His apostles preached. It is not the religion which produces real holiness.Ā True Christianity is a fight!

The true Christian is called to be aĀ soldier,Ā and must behave as such from the day of his conversion to the day of his death. He is not meant to live a life of pious ease, indolence and security. He must never imagine for a moment, that he can sleep and doze along the way to Heaven, like one traveling in an easy carriage. If he takes his standard of Christianity from the people of this world, he may be content with such vain notions–but he will find no countenance for them in the Word of God. If the Bible is the rule of his faith and practice, he will find his course laid down very plainly in this matter. He must fight!

The principal fight of the Christian is with . . .
Ā  the world,
Ā  the flesh,
Ā  and the devil.Ā

These are his never-dying foes! These are the three chief enemies against whom he must wage war. Unless he gets the victory over these three, all other victories are useless and vain. If he had a nature like an angel, and were not a fallen creature–the warfare would not be so essential. But withĀ a corrupt heart, a busy devil and an ensnaring world, he must either fight–or be lost.

He must fight theĀ WORLD. The subtle influence of that mighty enemy must be daily resisted–and without a daily battle, it can never be overcome.Ā

The love of the world’s good things,Ā
the fear of the world’s laughter or blame,Ā
the secret desire to keep in with the world,Ā
the secret wish to do as others in the world do–
all these areĀ spiritual foesĀ which beset the Christian continually on his way to Heaven, and must be conquered.Ā
“If any man loves the world–the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15
“The world is crucified to me–and I unto the world.” Galatians 6:14
“Whoever is born of God, overcomes the world.” 1 John 5:4
“Do not be conformed to this world.” Romans 12:2
“Friendship with the world is enmity with God. Whoever therefore will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God.” James 4:4

He must fight theĀ FLESH. Even after conversion, he carries within him aĀ nature prone to evilĀ and aĀ heart as weak and unstableĀ as water! That heart will never be free from imperfection in this world, and it is a miserable delusion to expect it.

He must fight theĀ DEVIL. ThatĀ old enemy of mankindĀ is not dead. Ever since the Fall of Adam and Eve, he has been “going to and fro in the earth, and walking up and down in it,” and striving to compass one great end–the ruin of man’s soul. Never slumbering and never sleeping–he is always going about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. AnĀ unseenĀ enemy, he is always near us, about our path and about our bed, and spying out all our ways! A murderer and a liar from the beginning–he labors night and day to cast us down to Hell. Sometimes by leading into superstition, sometimes by suggesting infidelity, sometimes by one kind of tactics and sometimes by another–he is always carrying on a campaign against our souls. This mighty adversary must beĀ daily resistedĀ if we wish to be saved.

Some may think these statements too strong. You imagine that I am going too far, and laying on the colors too thickly. But the Christian warfare is no light matter!Ā What do the Scriptures say?Ā
Ā  “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life.”Ā
Ā  “Endure hardship, as aĀ good soldierĀ of Jesus Christ.”Ā
Ā  “Put on theĀ full armorĀ of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes!”Ā
Ā  “StriveĀ to enter in at the strait gate.”Ā
Ā  “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong!”Ā

Words such as these appear to me as clear, plain and unmistakable. They all teach one and the same great lesson, if we are willing to receive it. That lesson is, that true Christianity is aĀ struggle, aĀ fightĀ and aĀ warfare!

Christ, the example of ministers

Christ, the example of ministers

(Jonathan Edwards)

It is not only our great duty, but will be our greatest honor, to imitate Christ, and do the work that He has done–and so act as co-workers with Him.Ā

The ministers of Christ should be persons of the same spirit that their Lord was of–the same spirit of humility and lowliness of heart; for the servant is not greater than his Lord.Ā

They should be of the same spirit of heavenly-mindedness, and contempt of the glory, wealth, and pleasures of this world.Ā

They should be of the same spirit of devotion and fervent love to God.Ā

They should follow the example of His prayerfulness; of whom we read from time to time of His retiring from the world, away from the noise and applause of the multitudes, into mountains and solitary places, for secret prayer, and holy converse with His Father.Ā

Ministers should be persons . . .
Ā  of the same quiet, lamb-like spirit that Christ was of;Ā
Ā  of the same spirit of submission to God’s will, and patience under afflictions, and meekness towards men;Ā
Ā  of the same calmness and composure of spirit under reproaches and sufferings from the malignity of evil men;
Ā  of the same spirit of forgiveness of injuries;Ā
Ā  of the same spirit of charity, of fervent love and extensive benevolence;Ā
Ā  of the same disposition to pity the miserable, and to weep with those who weep;Ā
Ā  of the same spirit of . . .
Ā Ā Ā  condescension to the poor and lowly,Ā
Ā Ā Ā  tenderness and gentleness toward the weak,Ā
Ā Ā Ā  and great and sincere love to enemies.Ā

They should also be of the same spirit of zeal, diligence, and self-denial for the glory of God, and advancement for his kingdom, and for the good of mankind; for which things sake Christ went though the greatest labors, and endured the most extreme sufferings.Ā

And in order to our imitating Christ in the work of the ministry, in any tolerable degree–we should not have ourĀ hearts weighed down, andĀ time filled upĀ with worldly affections, cares, and pursuits.

The duties of a minister that have been recommended, are absolutely inconsistent with a mind much taken up with worldly profit, glory, amusements and entertainments.

The breakdown and breakup of “Civilization”

The breakdown and breakup of “Civilization”

(Arthur Pink, “The Destruction of Dagon” 1943)

The “march of progress”Ā from 1920 onwards, was, if measured by the standards of righteousness and decency, steadilyĀ downwards. Those with the least sense of decency were determined to drag the whole generation down into the gutter. An orgy of licentiousness was widely entered into. Night-clubs were multiplied, gambling spread like wild fire, and debauchery abounded on every side. The beaches lowered their bathing restrictions–andĀ modestyĀ became a thing of the past. Youth was allowed to have its fling, unrestrained.Ā

TheĀ novelsĀ andĀ magazinesĀ of the last decade have been filled with obscenities and blasphemies. A friend of ours in the publishing business recently wrote to us, “Today we have shops stacked with books which, had they been published when we were boys–the authors and publishers would have been put in jail!” Censorship has long since been reduced to a farce. The great majority of our children have had their ideas formed by the pictures they saw at the “movies” and the debasing productions of a degenerate press. As a recent writer has said, “The best-sellers of today, are often books whoseĀ moralsĀ are of the barnyard, whoseĀ languageĀ is of the sewer and whoseĀ ethicsĀ are of the pit!”

The breakdown and breakup of “Civilization”Ā appears in such things as the decay of the sanctity of marriage–as evidenced by the multiplication of divorces, and the abandonment of large numbers of babies; juvenile delinquency and immorality among the young; the vandalism which is now so rife; such widespread pilfering–and the flimsy efforts of the authorities to deal with such evils! Thousands of culprits who ought to be sent to prison, are given nominal fines. Law and order is almost reduced to a farce!

No matter in which direction we turn, it is theĀ uglyĀ and theĀ vulgar–which is preferred to the beautiful and refined. What a commentary on our so-called “progress.”

Someone has said, “TheĀ popular tasteĀ is a good index to the health of society.” Apply that dictum to our own times, and it will quickly appear how the moral health of society has declined.

WeĀ doĀ what we do–because weĀ areĀ what we are. There is always a rigid consistency betweenĀ characterĀ andĀ conduct. The thin coating of “civilized” varnish has worn off–and twentieth-centuryĀ characterĀ stands exposed.

Editor’s note:Ā One can only imagine what Mr. Pink would write if he were alive today!

As a Cancer Prevention charity we were also giving away Bananas and sharing some great Banana facts as they help reduce your Cancer risk! I love Bananas…..So here are a few random facts:

1. Are energy boosters
The natural sugars found in bananas (sucrose, fructose, and glucose) combined with fiber and potassium make it an energy-boosting snack. In addition, its levels of serotonin and dopamine improve antioxidant capacity and help with of oxidative stress, enhancing performance overall. So the next time you plan an extreme workout session, remember to eat two bananas before your workout.

2. Is useful for treating anemia
People who suffer from anemia need to ingest great amounts of iron which stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood. Bananas are not only a rich source of iron they also contain a high amounts of vitamin C which increases the absorption of iron. So if you suffer from anemia, you should consider including bananas in their diet.

3. Bananas float on water!

Look unto Jesus in the Scriptures

Look unto Jesus in the Scriptures

(Theodore Monod, “Looking Unto Jesus!” 1874)
Ā
“Looking unto Jesus!”Ā Hebrews 12:2Ā
Ā
Only three words, but in these three words is the whole secret of spiritual life.Ā
Ā
Look unto Jesus in the Scriptures, to learn there . . .
Ā  who He is,
Ā  what He has done,
Ā  what He gives,
Ā  what He desires.

Looking unto Jesus in the Scriptures, we find . . .
Ā  in His character–our pattern;
Ā  in His teachings–our instruction;
Ā  in His precepts–our law;
Ā  in His promises–our support;
Ā  in His person and in His work–a full satisfaction provided for every need of our souls.Ā

“You study the Scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same Scriptures that testify about Me!” John 5:39

Oh! the bitter pain and sorrow,
That a time could ever be,Ā
When I proudly said to Jesus,Ā
AllĀ for self–andĀ noneĀ for Thee!”

Yet He found me; I beheld Him,Ā
Bleeding on the accursed tree;Ā
And my wistful heart said faintly,Ā
SomeĀ for self–andĀ someĀ for Thee.”Ā

Day by day His tender mercy,Ā
Healing, helping, full and free,
Brought me lower, while I whispered,Ā
LessĀ for self–andĀ moreĀ for Thee.”Ā

Higher than the highest heavens,Ā
Deeper than the deepest sea;Ā
Lord, Thy love at last has conquered,Ā
NoneĀ for self–andĀ allĀ for Thee!”

Should it be according to your mind?

Grace logo

Should it be according toĀ yourĀ mind?Ā

(James Smith, “Important Questions!” 1858)

Should it be according toĀ yourĀ mind?” Job 34:33

We are prone to be fretful, to complain of the dispensations of Divine Providence, and to reflect harshly upon the Lord’s dealings with us.

We want our own way.

We wish to carve for ourselves.

We would be treated as God’s favorites.

We want our ease, and prosperity, and pleasure, consulted in all things. And if this does not appear to be done–if ourĀ willsĀ are crossed, if ourĀ schemesĀ are frustrated, if ourĀ purposesĀ are broken off–then we stumble, think ourselves badly treated, and look for everybody to sympathize with us.

Under these circumstances, God comes to us–as we sit among our broken cisterns, surrounded by our dethroned idols–and puts this question to us: “Should it be according toĀ yourĀ mind?”

Ā  Are youĀ wiserĀ than God?

Ā Ā Ā  Are youĀ kinderĀ than God?

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Are youĀ holierĀ than God?

Ā Ā Ā  Are you moreĀ justĀ than God?

Ā  Are you betterĀ informedĀ than God?

May not your mind be dark, or selfish, or foolish?

Should it then be according toĀ yourĀ mind?

Should youĀ reign–or God?

Remember that . . .
Ā  God acts in the highest wisdom,
Ā  His motives are grace and justice,
Ā  and all His purposes are worthy of Himself.

The least the Christian can do is to submit–and to prefer God’s perfect wisdom, ways, and works–to his own. Seeing God has so arranged all events, that all things must work together for the good of His people–they, at least, should daily say, “Father, mayĀ YourĀ will be done!”

O my soul, seek grace from God, not only to submit and be resigned to the dispensations of Divine Providence–but toĀ acquiesceĀ in them, and beĀ pleasedĀ with the whole of them! Your good is consulted–your best interests are secured. Soon, very soon, it will be seen that infinite wisdom and mercy, grace and goodness, have marked outĀ every stepĀ of your road!

“Jesus replied: You do not understand what I amĀ nowĀ doing–but someday you will.” John 13:7

There is no sweeter pillow than providence!

Grace logo

There is no sweeter pillow than providence!Ā

(Charles Spurgeon, “Israel at the Red Sea”)

How sweet isĀ providenceĀ to a child of God, when he can reflect upon it!

He can look out into this world, and say, “However great my troubles, they are not so great as my Father’s power. However difficult may be my circumstances, yet all things are working together for my good.”

He who holds up yonder unpillared arch of the starry heavens–can also support my soul without a single apparent prop.

He who guides the stars in the well-ordered courses, even when they seem to move in hazy dances–surely He can overrule my trials in such a way that out of confusion He will bring order; and from seeming evil, produce lasting good.

He who bridles the storm, and puts the bit in the mouth of the tempest–surely He can restrain my trial, and keep my sorrows in subjection.

I need not fear . . .
Ā  while theĀ lightningsĀ are in His hands,
Ā  and theĀ thundersĀ sleep within His lips;
Ā  while theĀ oceansĀ gurgle from His fist,
Ā  and theĀ cloudsĀ are in the hollow of His hands;
Ā  while theĀ riversĀ are turned by His foot,
Ā  and while He digs the channels of theĀ sea.

Surely, He whose might gives wings to the angels, can furnish a worm with strength.Ā
Surely, He who guides a cherub, will not be overcome by the trials of a speck like myself.

He who makes the most ponderous orb roll in dignity, and keeps its predestined orbit–can make a little atom like myself move in my proper course, and conduct me as He pleases.

Christian!Ā there is no sweeter pillow than providence!Ā And when providence seems adverse, believe it still, and lay it under your head. For depend upon it–there is comfort in its bosom.

There is hope for you, child of God! The great trouble which is to come in your way in your pilgrimage, is planned by divine love–the same love which shall interpose as your protector.

At the cross!

Grace logo

At the cross!

(Charles Spurgeon)

The cross, that deepest revelation of the glory of God–is the great weapon which breaks down the heart’s defenses! It is especially the love of JesusĀ  shown in the cross, which turns and transforms the hearts of sinners.Ā

In the horrifying torture and crucifixion of Jesus, we see the highest proof of the highest love. His bleeding, makes our hearts bleed. His shame, makes us ashamed. In the cross we see the divine disgust at sin, which makes sin appalling in our eyes as well. But further, through the cross we see a love so unfathomable, that it pierces our apathy and overwhelms our desires for earthly trinkets.

At the crossĀ . . .
Ā  our pride and sinfulness are mortified,
Ā  our self-deifying efforts are destroyed,
Ā  our wandering hearts are exposed,
Ā  the beauty of Christ in His humility and holiness are held before us,Ā
Ā  and the glory of God shines brightest in all its transforming power.

The atoning work of Jesus is the greatĀ gunĀ of our battery. The cross is the mightyĀ battering-ram with which to break in pieces the bronze gates of human prejudices and the iron bars of sinful obstinacy!

The most excellent study for expanding the soul!

Grace logo

The most excellent study for expanding the soul!

(Charles Spurgeon, “The Immutability of God!“)

The proper study of God’s elect, is God. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God–is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father! There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a contemplation of the Divinity. It is a subject soĀ vast–that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; soĀ deep–that our pride is drowned in its infinity!Ā

Other subjects we can compass and grapple with; in them we feel a kind of self-contentment, and go our way with the thought,Ā “Behold I am wise!”Ā But when we come to this master-science, finding that ourĀ plumb-lineĀ cannot sound its depth, and that ourĀ eagle eyeĀ cannot see its height–we turn away with theĀ thoughtĀ that vain man would be wise, but he is like a wild donkey’s colt; and with the solemnĀ exclamation, “I am but of yesterday, and know nothing!” No subject of contemplation will tend more to humble the mind, than thoughts of God.Ā

The most excellent study for expanding the soul, is the science of Christ, and Him crucified–and the knowledge of the Godhead in the glorious Trinity. Nothing will so enlarge the intellect, nothing will so magnify the whole soul of man–as a devout, earnest, continued investigation of the great subject of the Deity. WhileĀ humblingĀ andĀ expanding, this subject is eminentlyĀ consolatory.Ā

Oh, there is in contemplating Christ, a balm for every wound!Ā
In musing on the Father, there is a quietus for every grief.Ā
In the influence of the Holy Spirit, there is a balsam for every sore.Ā

Would you lose your sorrows?Ā
Would you drown your cares?Ā
Then go, plunge yourself in the Godhead’s deepest sea!Ā
Be lost in His immensity–and you shall come forth as from a couch of rest, refreshed and invigorated.Ā

I know nothing which can . . .
Ā  so comfort the soul;Ā
Ā  so calm the swelling billows of grief and sorrow;
Ā  so speak peace to the winds of trial–
as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead!

He does whatever pleases Him!

Grace logo

He does whatever pleases Him!

(The sermons of Matthew Mead, 1629-1699)

“I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. The LORD does whatever pleases Him–in theĀ heavensĀ and on theĀ earth, in theĀ seasĀ and all their depths. He makesĀ cloudsĀ rise from the ends of the earth; He sendsĀ lightningĀ with theĀ rainĀ and brings out theĀ windĀ from His storehouses!” Psalm 135:5-7Ā

Every creature is God’s subject, and even the devils themselves are at His beck.Ā

It is so with the most inanimate beings. God bids theĀ windsĀ be silent and theĀ seasĀ be still–and how readily they obey His voice!Ā

If God calls for aĀ famineĀ on a sinning nation–then how suddenly does the earth become iron and the heavens brass!Ā

Flies and lice shall infest thrones and kingdoms, if armed with a commission from Almighty God. “All are Your servants!” Psalm 119:91Ā

What the centurion said of his soldiers and servants–is much more true of God:Ā
“I say to this one,Ā ‘Go,’Ā and he goes;
Ā and to another,Ā ‘Come,’Ā and he comes;Ā and
Ā to my servant,Ā ‘Do this,’Ā and he does it.” Matthew 8:9

God has a power and dominion over all of His creatures, and a sovereign right to dispose of them at His own pleasure.Ā

Sometimes He governs things according to the course of second causes. Sometimes He governs them in an extraordinary way–above or beyond nature. As when He made, “theĀ sunĀ to stand still in Gibeon, and theĀ moonĀ in the valley of Aijalon.” Joshua 10:12Ā

At the word of God, theĀ seaĀ divides for Israel to pass over on dry land.Ā

He makes theĀ earthĀ open to swallow up Korah and his companions.Ā

He shuts the mouth of hungryĀ lions!Ā Daniel 6:22

He commands the fiery furnace not to burn! Daniel 3:25Ā

The angels, those inhabitants of the glorious world–do His commandments, hearkening to the voice of His word.Ā

All the creatures in Heaven and earth are controlled by His sovereign power! Psalm 135:6 says, “Whatever the Lord pleased, that he did in the Heaven and earth, in the sea and all deep places.”Ā

It is so with all sicknesses, trials, and diseases. Matthew 8:8Ā

God’s sovereign will and power governs all.

No creature can evade the power of His dominion, for all are at His command!Ā

“Our God is in Heaven;Ā He does whatever pleases Him!” Psalm 115:3Ā

Suppose I have fallen into some great sin–what then?

“Ah!” says one, “Suppose I have fallen into some great sin–what then?

Why then, that is all the more reason why you should cast yourself upon Him.Ā

Do you think Jesus Christ is only for little sinners?Ā

Is He a doctor who only heals finger-aches?

Beloved, it is not faith to trust Christ when I have no sin–but it is true faith to trust Him when I am foul, and black, and filthy!

“The blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin!” 1 John 1:7Ā

It is but a little sin!

It is but a little sin!

(Thomas Brooks, “Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices!“)

“So that Satan will not outsmart us–for we are familiar with his evil schemes.” 2 Corinthians 2:11

“Ah!” says Satan, “It is but a little sin–a little pride, a little worldliness, a little lust, etc. You may commit it without any danger to your soul. It is but a little one; you may commit it, and yet your soul shall live.”

Consider, that there is great danger, yes, many times most danger–in the smallest sins.Ā
“A little leaven leavens the whole lump!” 1 Corinthians 5:6Ā
If the serpent sneaks in his head–he will draw in his whole body after him.Ā

Greater sins sooner startle the soul, and awaken and rouse up the soul to repentance, than lesser sins do. Little sins often slide into the soul, and breed, and work secretly and indiscernibly in the soul, until they come to be so strong, as to trample upon the soul, and to cut the throat of the soul!

Many are eternally undone by the ‘little sins’, as they call them, that are nourished in their own bosoms.Ā

A little hole in the ship, sinks it.Ā

A small breach in a dyke, carries away all before it.Ā

A little stab at the heart, kills a man.Ā

A little sin, without a great deal of mercy, will damn a man!

(Octavius Winslow, “Christ is Ever With You!” 1863)

“Lo,Ā IĀ am with you always–even unto the end of the world!” Matthew 28:20Ā

WhoseĀ presence is thus promised and pledged?Ā

It is the presence of Christ! The Christ who is God. “Immanuel, God with us!”

The Christ who . . .
Ā  made all worlds,
Ā  created all beings,
Ā  governs all empires,
Ā  and controls all events!Ā

The Christ who replenishes . . .
Ā  earth with beauty,
Ā  Heaven with glory,
Ā  eternity with song!

The Christ before whom angels and archangels, principalities and powers bend–and at whose name every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord!

The Christ . . .
Ā  whoseĀ gloryĀ is divine,
Ā  whoseĀ beautyĀ is peerless,Ā
Ā  whoseĀ wealthĀ is boundless,
Ā  whoseĀ loveĀ is as infinite as His being!

The Christ who . . .
Ā  bore and put away your sins forever,
Ā  removed and forever canceled your curse,
Ā  paid all your great debt to Divine justice,Ā
Ā  sorrowed for you in the garden,
Ā  suffered and expired in your stead on the cross,
Ā  rose from the grave, ascended up to Heaven, lives and intercedes for you, representing your person and presenting your prayers and praises with ineffable acceptance and delight–to His Father and your Father, to His God and your God.Ā

“Lo,Ā IĀ am with you always! Mark! Behold! I the Incarnate God, I who opened my bleeding heart for your redemption on Calvary, I who am your dearest Friend–I am with you always, in all places, and at all times, unto the end of the world!”

O honored saint of God! You have . . .Ā Ā
Ā  theĀ DivinestĀ in the universe to love you,
Ā  theĀ MightiestĀ in the universe to shield you,
Ā  theĀ LoveliestĀ in the universe to delight you,
Ā  theĀ DearestĀ in the universe to soothe, cheer, and gladden you!Ā
O favored disciple of Jesus–you have such a One ever at your side!Ā

This is theĀ promise of promisesthe richest pearl of all the promises, exceeding in its mightiness and preciousness; while it is the substance, sweetness, and pledge of all the rest!

(Octavius Winslow)

“This was the one who hadĀ reclined on Jesus’ bosomĀ at the supper . . . ” John 21:20

The bosom of Jesus still pillows the head of the weary, loving disciple of the Lord. There is no real rest for the soul, but in Jesus.

Where should the Christ-loved, the Christ-loving disciple lean, with his sins and sorrows, with his weariness and want–but upon the bosom of his Lord? It is the place of repose, of faith, and of love.

There is room for you there amid the countless ones who fly to it for consolation, safety, and repose!Ā Go and lean with your burden, your grief, and your sin–where the beloved disciple reclined; and you shall realize the blessedness of the oneness, confidence, and affection which exist between Jesus and all the disciples whom He loves.Ā

Let all God’s people look upon death through Scripture spectacles!

(A Funeral Sermon for Mr.Ā Christopher LoveĀ on the following Sabbath-Day after he was executed. By Mr. Edmund Calamy, London, August 24, 1651)

“Our friend LazarusĀ sleeps.” John 11:11
Ā
“And when Stephen had said this, he fellĀ asleep.” Acts 7:60

Let me beseech the people of God, that they would look upon death, not as it is presented unto us in nature’s looking-glass, but as it is set down in a Scripture-dress. Nature presents death in a very terrible manner–and it is true, death is very terrible to a man outside of Christ. But to you who are in Christ, the sting of death is taken away–and death is nothing else but a quiet and placid sleep, a putting off of our clothes, and a going to bed until we awake in the morning of the resurrection.Ā

Death to a child of God is nothing else but a putting off of his earthly tabernacle.Ā

It is but a going from an earthly prison, into an heavenly palace.Ā

Death is the letting of the soul out of prison, as a bird out of the cage, that it may flee to Heaven.Ā

Death is change from a temporary Hell, to an eternal Heaven!Ā

Death is not the death of the man, but the death of his sins.

It is the end of the pilgrim’s journey–and the seaman’s haven.

Death is being absent from the body, and being present with the Lord.

Let all God’s people look upon death through Scripture spectacles, and consider it as it is sweetly represented in this text! A child of God should be as willing to die as to put off his clothes–because death is nothing else to him but a sleep.

Death is a departure from earth’s misery–to the everlasting happiness of Heaven!

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” Psalm 116:15

Clear views of Christ’s priestly office and intercession

Clear views of Christ’s priestly office and intercession

(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)

“But I haveĀ prayedĀ for you Simon, that your faith may not fail.” Luke 22:32Ā

We see in this verse–one great secret of a believer’s perseverance in the faith.Ā
It was owing to Christ’s intercession–that Peter did not entirely fall away.

The continued existence of grace in a believer’s heart, is a great standing miracle. His enemies are so mighty–and his strength is so small; the world is so full of snares–and his heart is so weak; that it seems at first sight impossible for him to reach Heaven.Ā

The passage before us explains his safety. He has a mighty Friend at the right hand of God, who ever lives to make intercession for him. There is a watchful Advocate, who is daily pleading for him–seeing all his daily necessities, and obtaining daily supplies of mercy and grace for his soul. His grace never altogether dies–because Christ always lives to intercede for him! (Hebrews 7:25.)

If we are true Christians, we shall find it essential to our comfort in religion–to haveĀ clear views of Christ’s priestly office and intercession. Christ lives–and therefore our faith shall not fail. Let us beware of regarding Jesus only as one whoĀ diedĀ for us. Let us never forget that He isĀ aliveĀ for evermore. Paul bids us to especially remember that He is risen again, and is at the right hand of God, and also makes intercession for us. Romans 8:34
Ā
The work that He does for His people, is not yet over. He is still appearing in the presence of God for them, and doing for their souls, what He did for Peter. His present life for them–is just as important as His death on the cross eighteen hundred years ago! Christ lives–and therefore true Christians “shall live also.”

Well, when you are suffering the punishment of this sin in hell!

Grace logo

Well, when you are suffering the punishment of this sin in hell!

(Samuel Davies, “The Nature and Danger of Making Light of Christ and Salvation”)

“But they made light of it.”Ā Matthew 22:5

Consider what those things are, which engross your affections, and which tempt you to neglect Christ and your salvation.

Have you found a better friend than Christ, or a more substantial and lasting happiness than His eternal salvation?Ā

Oh! whatĀ triflesĀ andĀ vanities, whatĀ dreamsĀ andĀ shadowsĀ are men pursuing—while they neglect the important realities of the eternal world!Ā

If crowns and kingdoms, if all the riches, glories, and pleasures of this present world were ensured to you—as a reward for making light of Christ, you would even then make the most foolish bargain possible; for what are these in the grand scale—when compared to eternal joy, or eternal misery! “What is a man profited, if he shall gain even the whole world, and lose his own soul!”Ā

But you cannot realistically hope for the ten thousandth part of these worldly trifles! And will you cast away your souls for such a pittance?Ā

Alas! what does the richest, the highest, the most voluptuous sinner do—but lay upĀ treasures of wrathĀ against the day of wrath! Oh how will the unhappy creatures torture themselves forever with the most cutting reflections, for selling their Savior and their souls—for such trifles! Let your sins and earthly enjoyments save you then, if they can! Then go and cry to theĀ godsĀ you have chosen; let them deliver you in the day of your damnation!Ā

The time is hastening on, when you will not think so lightly of Christ and salvation. Oh, sirs, when God shall commissionĀ DEATHĀ to tear your guilty souls out of your bodies, when devils shall drag you away to the place of torment, when you find yourselves condemned to everlasting fire by that Savior whom you now neglect—what would you then give for a Savior!Ā

When you see that theĀ worldĀ has deserted you, that yourĀ companionsĀ in sin have deceived both themselves and you, and all yourĀ merry daysĀ are over forever—would you notĀ thenĀ give ten thousand worlds for Christ!!

And now, dear immortal souls! Whenever you spend another prayerless, thoughtless day; whenever you give yourselves up to sinful pleasures, or an over-eager pursuit of the world—may your conscience become your preacher, and sting you with these solemn truths!Ā

I cannot but fear, after all, that some of you, as usual, will continue careless and impenitent.Ā Well, when you are suffering the punishment of this sin in hell, remember that you were warned, and acquit me from beingĀ accessoryĀ to your eternal ruin!

And when we all appear before the supreme Judge, and I am called to give an account of my ministry: when I am asked, “Did you warn these creatures of their danger? Did you lay before them their guilt in making light of these things?” You will hear me answer, “Yes, Lord, I warned them in the best manner I could—but they would not believe me; they would not regard what I said!”Ā

Oh sirs, must I give in this accusation against any ofĀ you? No, rather have mercy on yourselves—that I may give an account of you with joy, and not with grief!

The greatest sinner that you know!

Grace logo

The greatest sinner that you know!

(William Law, “A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life“)

“This is a true saying, and worthy of all acceptance:Ā ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’–andĀ I am the worst of them all.” 1 Timothy 1:15Ā

You may truly look uponĀ yourselfĀ to beĀ the greatest sinner that you knowĀ in the world. For though you may know many people to be guilty of some gross sins with which you cannot charge yourself–yet you may justly condemn yourself as the greatest sinner that you know, because you know more of the folly of your own heart, than you do of other people’s hearts. You can charge yourself with various sins, that only you know of yourself, and cannot be sure that others are guilty of them.Ā

So that as you know more of the folly, the degradation, the pride, the deceitfulness and vileness of your own heart, than you do of any one’s else–so you have just reason to consider yourself asĀ the greatest sinner that you know; because you know more of the greatness of your own sins, than you do of other people’s sins.Ā

God Almighty knows greater sinners than you are; because He sees and knows the circumstances of all men’s sins.Ā But your own heart, if it is faithful to you, can discover no guilt so great as your own.

Perhaps that person who appears so odious in your eyes, would have been much better than you are–had he been altogether in your circumstances, and received all the same favors and graces from God that you have. And thereforeĀ the greatest sinner that you know, must be yourself.

This is a very humbling thought.Ā

A serious and frequent reflection upon this will mightily tend to . . .
Ā  humble us in our own eyes,Ā
Ā  make us very sensible of the greatness of our own guilt,Ā
Ā  and very tender in censuring and condemning other people.

“In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge!” Colossians 2:3

The one trueĀ resting-place where doubt and weariness, the stings of a pricking conscience, and the longings of an unsatisfied soul would all be quieted–is Christ Himself!
Ā
Not the church, but Christ.Ā

Not doctrine, but Christ.Ā

Not religious forms and ceremonies, but Christ.Ā

Christ the God-man . . .
Ā  giving His life for ours,
Ā  sealing the everlasting covenant, and
Ā  making peace for us through the blood of His cross!

Christ the divine storehouse of all light and truth, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge!Ā

Christ the infinite vessel–the enlightener, the teacher, the quickener, the comforter–so that out of His fullness we may receive grace upon grace.

This,Ā this alone is the vexed soul’s refuge, itsĀ rockĀ to build on, itsĀ homeĀ to abide in–until the great tempter is bound and every conflict ended in victory.

I cannot think little of sin, when . . .

(J.C. Ryle)

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”Ā Matthew 27:46

Would I know how exceedingly sinful and abominable sin is in the sight of God? Where shall I see sin most fully brought out?Ā

Shall I turn to the history of theĀ flood, and read how sin drowned the world?Ā

Shall I go to the shore of the Dead Sea, and mark what sin brought onĀ SodomĀ andĀ Gomorrah?Ā

No! I can find a clearer proof still! I look at theĀ cross of Christ!

There I see that sin is so filthy and damnable, that nothing but the blood of God’s own Son can wash it away!Ā

There I see that sin has so separated me from my holy Maker, that all the angels in Heaven could never have made peace between us. Nothing could reconcile us, short of the death of Christ.Ā

If I listened to the wretched talk of proud people, I might sometimes imagine that sin was not so very sinful! ButĀ I cannot think little of sin, whenĀ I look at the cross of Christ!Ā

“It is appointed unto all once to die–and after death, the judgment!” Hebrews 9:27

O my Father, You are daily loading me with Your benefits–giving me unnumbered causes for gratitudeĀ and thankfulness. No earthly friend could have loved and cared for me like You. Oh may the life You are thus preserving by Your unceasing bounty–be unreservedly dedicated to Your praise.

O my Father, keep me mindful that I am soon to be done with this fleeting world; thatĀ I am fast borne along the stream of time–to the ocean of endless futurity!

May I be living in a constant state ofĀ preparednessĀ for that solemn hour when small and great shall stand before You, and theĀ booksshall be opened. Train me forĀ eternity!Ā Let me not beĀ frittering awayĀ these fleeting, but precious moments. Impress on me the solemn conviction . . .
Ā  that as menĀ live–so do menĀ die;Ā
Ā  that asĀ deathĀ leaves me–soĀ judgmentĀ will find me;
Ā  and that asĀ judgmentĀ finds me–soĀ eternityĀ will keep me.

Oh let death leave meĀ falling asleep in Jesus, united to Him by a living faith–so that judgment may find me seated at His right hand, listening to the joyous welcome, “Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world!”

Blessed Jesus, all my hope of a glorious resurrection centers in You. I look to You as the strong tower which cannot be shaken. I flee anew to the holy sanctuary of Your covenant love. Sheltered there, amid a dissolving earth, and burning worlds–I shall be able joyfully to utter the challenge, “Who shall separate me from the love of Christ?”

Keep me from all negligence and unwatchfulness. Trim my flickering lamp. Let me live with Your Judgment-throne in view. May I ever remember–that I must soon give anĀ accountĀ of myself to You, the infallible searcher of all hearts. May I feel that all the talents and means which You have given me–areĀ trustsĀ to be laid out for You. When you come to demand a reckoning, may I not be among the number of those who have hidden their talent in the earth, and have theĀ cheerless retrospect of a misspent life.

May every providential voice sound loud in my ears, “Arise and depart–for this is not your rest, because it is defiled–it is ruined, beyond all remedy!”

Make me more heavenly-minded. Give me more of aĀ pilgrimĀ attitude–and a pilgrim spirit. May I ever feel thatĀ my true homeĀ is above–and that I am here on earth, but a wayfarer and sojourner, as all my fathers were. May I attain, as I advance nearer to Heaven, the blessed habit of a holy life, declaring plainly that I am seeking a heavenly home.Ā

I delight often to anticipate that happy time, when I shallĀ sufferĀ no more–andĀ sinĀ no more!

A golden master-key!

A golden master-key!Ā
Ā
(Charles Spurgeon)

The Lord opened Lydia’s heartĀ to respond to what Paul was saying.” Acts 16:14

God’s saving grace will not be baffled.Ā
Ā
He frequently begins with theĀ silver keyĀ of a mother’s tearful prayers and a father’s tender counsels.Ā
Ā
In turn, He uses theĀ church-keysĀ of His ordinances and His ministers, and these are often found to move the bolt.Ā
Ā
But if they fail, He thrusts in theĀ iron keyĀ of trouble and affliction which has been known to succeed after all others have failed.Ā
Ā
He has, however,Ā a golden master-key, which excels all others. It is the operation of His own most gracious Spirit, by which entrance is effected into hearts which seemed shut up forever.
Ā
Wonderful is the patience and long-suffering of the Lord, or He would long since have left hardened and careless sinners to themselves. He is importunate, whether we are so or not. We take pains to resist His heavenly grace, but He abides faithful to His own name of love.
Ā
O Lord, we bless You that You have opened our hearts, and we ask You now that You have entered, to abide in our souls forever, as a king in his own palace!

God deals mysteriously with me!

God deals mysteriously with me!

(Alexander Smellie, “The Secret Place” 1907)

“Your path led through the sea, Your way through the mighty waters–though Your footprints were not seen!”Ā Psalm 77:19Ā

Just so,Ā God deals mysteriously with me. His footsteps, His judgments, His methods, are often untrackable, like the untried sea. What thoughĀ IĀ cannot comprehend all His winding mazes? It is enough thatĀ HeĀ comprehends. I rest in His wise-heartedness and love.

I know that if He surrounds me withĀ change, He gives me a hold on what is permanent and stable. Every breath of wind, every passing shadow, every ray of sun, alters the sea. And, meanwhile, by God’s will, nothing in my life continues unchangeable. The very mutableness of things, drives me into closer communion with Himself. Standing on the Rock of Ages, I am rooted in an element that is indestructible.

I know that if He permits me to be assailed byĀ storm, He can keep my heart in peace. It is His decree that I am driven hither and thither over moonless waters by contrary winds. But the certainty is mine, that He makes all things to work together for my good.Ā

He is my holy Father, my unerring Father, my Father of immeasurable grace. He makes no mistakes now, and, by and by He will bring me to His house not made with hands, where I will sing with everlasting joy!

Trust His heart–even when you can’t trace His hand!

Grace logo

Trust HisĀ heart–even when you can’t trace HisĀ hand!

(John MacDuff, “The Promised Land!” 1859)

“And HeĀ ledĀ them forth by theĀ rightĀ way–that they might go to a city of habitation.” Psalm 107:7

God’sĀ thoughtsĀ are not as our thoughts–neither are HisĀ waysĀ as our ways! This truth is strikingly exemplified in theĀ mannerĀ in which He led the Israelites from Egypt to the promised land.Ā WeĀ would have chosen the way that wasĀ nearestĀ andĀ most direct–but God decided otherwise. He led them round about through the wilderness, and that for the space of forty years! And not merely was it the mostĀ distantĀ way–but it was the mostĀ dangerousĀ way as well. It was a land ofĀ desertsĀ and ofĀ pits–a land ofĀ droughtĀ andĀ death–a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt.Ā

But, as strange as it appeared, we are fully justified in saying that it wasĀ wisely arranged.Ā
Their long detainments;
their tiresome and circuitous wanderings;
their fierce conflicts with the Moabites and the Amalekites;
the bitter waters which they had to drink; and
the fiery serpents with which they were stung–
all fulfilled the high purposes of Him who is excellent in counsel, as well as wonderful in working. However contraryĀ HisĀ way might have been toĀ theirs–yet “He led them forth by theĀ rightĀ way, that they might go to a city of habitation.”

His dealings with His people nowĀ are still as unusual, and as much opposed to allĀ theirĀ preconceived plans–as were His dealings with the Israelites! He has crossed their own schemes, and thwarted their most fondly-cherished purposes! He always effects His own ends–in His own way!

Christian, what is your duty?

It is to cherish high thoughts of God in all HisĀ inscrutable dealingsĀ towards you.Ā

It is toĀ trust HisĀ heart–even when you can’t trace HisĀ hand; believing that “all theĀ pathsĀ of the Lord are mercy and truth, unto such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.”Ā

It is to follow HisĀ guidanceĀ continually; for as He led His people of old with “the cloud by day, the pillared fire by night”–so He has promised to direct allĀ your steps, and preserve allĀ yourĀ goings.

It is to wait His time; for although the way may appear longĀ and tedious–yet remember,Ā “all is well, that ends well.”Ā And whatĀ will the end be? “And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs, and everlasting joy upon their heads! They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away!”

A book full of Christ!

A book full of Christ!

(J.C. Ryle)

“Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Luke 24:44Ā

We have probably little idea how much deep truth is contained in the book of Psalms. No part of the Bible perhaps is better known in the letter–and none so little understood in the spirit. We err greatly if we suppose that it is nothing but a record of David’s feelings, of David’s experience, David’s praises, and David’s prayers. The hand that held the pen was generally David’s. But the subject matter was often something far deeper and higher than the history of the son of Jesse.Ā

The book of Psalms, in a word, isĀ a book full of Christ:
Ā  Christ in humiliation,
Ā  Christ suffering,
Ā  Christ dying,
Ā  Christ rising again,
Ā  Christ coming the second time,
Ā  Christ reigning over all.Ā

Both of Christ’s advents are here: His coming in suffering to bear theĀ cross–and His second coming in power to wear theĀ crown.Ā

Both of Christ’s kingdoms are here–His kingdom ofĀ grace, during which the elect are gathered–and His kingdom of glory, when every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord.Ā

Let us always read the Psalms with a peculiar reverence. Let us say to ourselves as we read, “A greater than David is here!”
