Discontent!
(Arthur Pink, “Comfort for Christians”)
“I have learned to beย contentย whatever the circumstances.” Philippians 4:11ย
Contentmentย is the being satisfied with the sovereign dispensations of God’s providence. It is the opposite of murmuring, which is the spirit of rebellion–theย clayย saying to theย Potter, “Why have You made me thus?” Instead of complaining at his lot–a contented man is thankful that his condition and circumstances are no worse than they are.ย
Discontent!ย Was there ever a time when there was so much discontent and restlessness in the world, as there is today? We very much doubt it. Despite our boasted progress, the vast increase of wealth, the time and money expended daily in pleasure–discontent is everywhere! No class is exempt. Everything is in a state of flux, and almost everybody is dissatisfied. Many even among God’s own people are affected with the evil spirit of this age.
Contentment!ย Is such a thing realizable, or is it nothing more than a beautiful ideal, a mere dream of the poet? Is it attainable on earth, or is it restricted to the inhabitants of Heaven? If feasible here and now–may it be retained, or are a few brief moments or hours of contentment the most that we may expect in this life?
The force of Paul’s statement will be better appreciated, if his condition and circumstances at the time he made it, are kept in mind. When the apostle wrote the words, he was not luxuriating in a special suite in the Emperor’s palace–but was in prison “in chains”. The contentment which Paul enjoyed, was not the result of congenial and comfortable surroundings. Most people suppose that contentment is impossible, unless one can have the desires of the carnal heart gratified. A prison is the last place to which they would go, if they were seeking a contented man. This much, then, is clear–contentment comes from within and not without; it must be sought from God, not in creature comforts.
Now, there is a vast difference between precept and practice, between the ideal and the realization. But in the case of Paul, contentment was an actual experience! It wasย something he hadย learned in the school of Christian experience.
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and beย contentย with what you have, because God has said–Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
Discontent!
God is too kind to punish the ungodly!
God is too kind to punish the ungodly!
(A.W. Tozer)
God’s justice stands forever against the unrepentant sinner in utter severity!
The vague and tenuous hope thatย God is too kind to punish the ungodlyย has becomeย a deadly opiate for the consciences of millions!ย It hushes their fears and allows them to practice all kinds of iniquity–while damnation draws every day nearer, and the command to repent goes unregarded. As responsible moral beings, we dare not so trifle with our eternal future!
“On the wicked He will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot!” Psalm 11:6ย
“Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them!” Isaiah 3:11ย
“They always heap up their sins to the limit. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost!” 1 Thessalonians 2:16ย
“They called to the mountains and the rocks: Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and fromย the wrath of the Lamb!ย For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” Revelation 6:16-17ย
“He, too, will drink of the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of His wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb!” Revelation 14:10ย
A subtle leaven which the heart is always ready to receive!
Aย subtle leavenย which the heart is always ready to receive!
(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)
“Beware of theย leaven of the Pharisees–which isย hypocrisy. For there is nothingย coveredย that will not be revealed, norย hiddenย that will not be made known.” Luke 12:1-2
The first thing that demands our attention in these verses, isย Christ’s warning against hypocrisy.ย
This is aย warningย of which the importance can never be overrated. It was delivered by our Lord more than once, during His earthly ministry. It was intended to be a standing caution to His whole church in every age, and in every part of the world.ย
It was meant to remind us thatย the principles of the Pharisees are deeply ingrained in human nature–and that Christians should be always on their guard against them. Hypocrisy isย aย subtle leavenย which the heart is always ready to receive!ย It is a leaven which once received into the heart, infects the whole character of a man’s Christianity. Of this leaven, says our Lord, in words that should often ring in our ears–of this leaven,ย beware!
Let us ever nail this caution in our memories, and bind it on our hearts.ย The plague is around us on every side!ย The danger is at all times. What is the essence of Romanism, and formalism, and ceremonialism? What is it all, but the leaven of the Pharisees under one shape or another?ย The Pharisees are not extinct!ย Pharisaism lives still.
If we would not become Pharisees–then let us cultivate a ‘heart religion’. Let us realize daily that the God with whom we have to do, looks far below the outward surface of our profession, and that He measures us by the state of our hearts. Let us beย realย andย trueย in our Christianity. Let us abhor all part-acting, and affectation, and semblance of devotion–put on for public occasions, but not really felt within.ย
Our hypocrisy may deceive man, and get us the reputation of being very religious–but it cannot deceive God. “For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be made known.”ย
Whatever we are in religion–let us never wear a cloak or a mask of religion.
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account!” Hebrews 4:13ย
I desire that this may be the text at my funeral
“The Aged Christian’s Final Farewell to the World and its Vanities” John Whitson, 1558-1629)
I desire that this may be the text at my funeral: Psalm 42:2, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”
Oh! when shall I ascend to the eternal throne of blessedness, where no comforts are lacking?
When shall I be covered with the glorious robe of immortality, and shine in the brightness of my Redeemer’s innocence?
When shall I behold the lovely face of my Lord and dwell in the courts of His holy temple, where . . .
all tears shall be wiped away from my eyes,
all sorrows removed from my heart,
and all sins and spots are done away?
Where I shall exchange the dross of this world, for true and durable riches!
Where, instead of these earthly riches which moth and rust corrupt–I shall enjoy the heavenly riches of perfect peace and good conscience, never to be lost!
Instead of these false and flattering honors, I shall enjoy everlasting glory, and be admitted into the fellowship of my Redeemer to reign with Him in His glorious kingdom!
Instead of vain and momentary pleasures, I shall be filled with fullness of joy and be ravished with those delights which neither eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man to conceive!
Instead of this dark and cloudy knowledge, I shall have my heart enlightened with the beams of the true light!
Instead of this feeble strength, I shall be endowed with the might of angels!
Instead of this transitory health, I shall enjoy a powerful and immortal vigor!
Instead of this fading beauty, I shall be adorned with the loveliness of Christ’s spouse!
Instead of long life, I shall be crowned with life eternal!
We shall sing, Holy! Holy! Holy! Lord God almighty! Heaven and Earth are full of your glory. Glory be to You, O Lord, most High.
And now, as the deer pants for the water-brooks, so longs my soul after You, O God!
O that I had wings like a dove, that I might fly away and be at rest!
For whom have I in Heaven but You–and who is there upon earth that I desire but You?
My heart and my strength fail me, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever!
The sweetest and the loudest note in our songs of praise should be . . .
The sweetest and the loudest note in our songs of praise should be . . .
“O that we would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to men.” Psalm 107:8
If weย complainedย less andย praisedย more–we would be happier, and God would be more glorified.ย
Let us daily praise God forย common mercies. They areย commonย as we frequently call them, and yet soย priceless, that when deprived of them–we imagine that we are ready to perish! Let us bless God . . .
ย for theย eyesย with which we behold the sun;
ย for theย healthย andย strengthย to walk abroad;
ย for theย breadย we eat;
ย for theย clothingย we wear;
ย for public and religiousย liberty;
ย for friends and family associations; and
ย for countless other comforts and blessings.ย
Let us praise Him, in fact, for everything which we receive from His bounteous hand; for we deserve little, and yet are most plenteously endowed.ย
But beloved,ย the sweetest and the loudest note in our songs of praise should beย ofย redeeming love!ย God’s redeeming acts towards His chosen people, are forever the favorite themes of their praise. If we know what redemption means, let us not withhold our sonnets of thanksgiving.
We have been redeemed from the power of our corruptions, and uplifted from the depth of sin in which we were naturally plunged.ย
We have been led to the cross of Christ, and our shackles of guilt have been broken off.
We are no longer slaves of sin–but children of the living God.
We shall shortly be presented before the eternal throne without spot or wrinkle or any such thing.ย
Shall we not unceasingly give thanks to the Lord our Redeemer?ย
Child of God, can you be silent?ย
Awake, awake, O inheritors of eternal glory, and cry out with David, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me–bless His holy name!”
You are absolutely beautiful, My beloved!
You are absolutely beautiful, My beloved!
(Charles Spurgeon)ย
“You are absolutely beautiful, My beloved!ย There is no spot in you!” Song of Solomon 4:7ย
The Lord’s admiration of His Church is very astonishing, and His description of her beauty is very glowing. She is not merelyย beautiful–but “absolutely beautiful.” He views her in Himself, washed in His sin-atoning blood, and clothed in His meritorious righteousness–thus He considers her to be full of loveliness and beauty. No wonder that such is the case–since it is but His own perfect excellency that He admires; for the holiness, glory, and perfection of His Church–are His own glorious garments on the back of His own well-beloved spouse!
Nor is the Churchย barelyย lovely, she isย superlativelyย so. Her Lord styles her the “most beautiful of women.” Song of Solomon 1:8ย
She has a real worth and excellence which cannot be rivaled by all the nobility and royalty of the world. If Jesus could exchange His elect bride for all the angels in Heaven–He would not, for He puts her first and foremost, “most beautiful of women.” She far outshines the stars!
Nor is this an opinion which He is ashamed of, for He invites all men to hear it. He sets a “behold” before it, a special note of exclamation, inviting and arresting attention. “Behold! How beautiful you are, My beloved, how beautiful!” (Song of Solomon 4:1). His opinion He publishes abroad even now, and one day from the throne of His glory He will avow the truth of it before the assembled universe.ย “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with Me!”ย will be His solemn affirmation of the loveliness of His elect!
“Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her ย to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word,ย and to present her to Himself asย a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless!”Ephesians 5:25-27ย
“The king is enthralled by your beauty!”ย Psalm 45:11ย
Extremely derogatory to human pride!
Extremely derogatory to human pride!ย
(Stephen Tyng, “Christ is All”)ย
“In hisย pride, the wicked does not seek God; in all his thoughts, there is no room for God!” Psalm 10:4ย
Sin has entirely perverted the nature of man.ย
The carnal mind is opposed to God in its . . .ย
ย judgments,ย
ย tastes,ย
ย desires,
ย pursuits.ย
God demands that guilty man . . .ย
ย ย sacrifice his own imaginaryย independence,ย
ย ย renounce his own fanciedย excellence, andย
ย ย acknowledge his personalย unworthiness,ย
before he can be received into the family of God.ย
Such demands seemย extremely derogatory toย human pride. For this reason, multitudes reject all the offers of the Gospel, and treat with contempt those who yield to the invitations which they themselves despise, and submit to the motives which they renounce, as deluded and degraded people.
“The day is coming whenย your pride will be brought lowย and the Lord alone will be exalted.” Isaiah 2:11
“The Lord Almighty has done it toย destroy your prideย and show His contempt for all human greatness.” Isaiah 23:9
“The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sureย of this: They will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5
This makes us prize the gospel, embrace the Savior, and fly to His cross!
This makes us prize the gospel, embrace the Savior, and fly to His cross!
(Letters of John Berridge, 1716-1793)
Dear Sir,ย
In November I gathered strength enough to preach, and through mercy have continued preaching ever since. For the last month I have shared with my neighbors in a bad cold, which has kept me wheezing and coughing, and pulled me down, but not laid me up.ย
Oh, how needful is theย furnace, both to reveal our dross, and to purge it away! How little do we know of ourselves, of the pride, sensuality, and idolatry of our hearts–until the Lord lays us on a bed of suffering, and searches all our inward parts with His candles. My heart, I knew, was bad enough, but I scarcely thought there was half the baseness in it which I find, and yet I know not half its plague!ย
How sweet is the mercy of God, and how rich is the grace of Jesus–when we have had an awful peep into our hearts!ย This makes us prize the gospel, embrace the Savior, and fly to His cross!ย At times I am so overwhelmed with the filth and mire of my nature, that I can scarcely look through it unto Jesus. And when he has put on a little of his eye-salve, and scoured the scales off my eyes–I stand amazed to think that He can touch such a leper! And yet where the sun shines clear for a season, and my dung-hill is covered with snow, I forget my leprosy, or become a leper only in notion. I think it perhaps, but do not feel it, nor am I humbled by it. What a heap of absurd contradiction is man!ย
After an affliction, I think I can say with David: It is good for me to have been afflicted. I can see and feel some profit attending it. Indeed, I never grow really wiser or better, unless when I am baptized both with theย Holy Spiritย and withย fire. If the Dove comes without a furnace, my heart is soon lifted up; pride steals in, and Heaven’s blessed beams turn everything sour within me! We learn nothing truly of ourselves, or of grace, but in a furnace.
The heaviest afflictions on this side of Hell are less, far less than my iniquities have deserved! Oh, boundless grace! The chastening rod of a reconciled Father, might have been the flaming sword of an avenging Judge! I might now have been weeping and wailing with devils and damned spirits in Hell! I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against Him. It is of His mercy alone, that I am not consumed!
All that we see within is foul, ugly and grim!
All that we see within is foul, ugly, and grim!
(Frank Hall)
“You are complete in Him!” Colossians 2:10ย
Oh desponding Christian, is not your grief caused by looking within yourself? Is not that miserable feeling of failure and disappointment, caused by your strange fixation upon your hollow heart of iniquity? You lookย within, hoping to find something good, something pure, something precious, something clean–but what do you see?ย Nothing but sin!ย To stare into one’s self–is to stare into a bottomless pit of despair and hopelessness! “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked!” Jeremiah 17:9
Will we ever learn this? There is nothingย withinย usย to give us hope, rest, or peace. Have we ever found anythingย within usย that gave us joy? Of course not! Then why do we continue toย stare into the darkness?ย All that we see within is foul, ugly, and grim!ย One glance within ought toย sickenย us. We would sooner find diamonds in a dunghill or roses growing in a sewer–than find goodness dwelling within!
In ourselves we are sinful, guilty, and vile! But bless God forever!ย
Ourย standingย before God is not in ourselves; it’s in Christ! He is . . .
ย our Salvation,
ย our Righteousness,ย
ย our Hope,
ย our Holiness, and
ย our Acceptance with God!ย
Change the direction of your gaze–and look up! Stop staring into the empty void of your heart–and fix your eyes upon Jesus your Lord, in whom all fullness dwells. Our hope is not within, but without, seated at the right hand of the Father! Lift up your head that is bowed down with guilt and shame! Behold Christ your Savior! Behold your glorious Redeemer! Bid sorrow goodbye and fear depart! Rejoice, for “Youย areย complete in Him!”ย
Believers are perfect in Christ. To be complete in Christ is to be perfect in Christ. Perfect is not something that we will be, or strive to be–but something that we are right now, by virtue of our eternal union with God’s darling Son.ย
Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are, by the free grace of God, complete in Christ our Savior!ย
We lack nothing!ย
All that Heย is–we are in Him!ย
All that Heย has–we have in Him!
All that He hasย done–we’ve done in Him!ย
We possess the infinite fullness of eternal life and everlasting salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord!
We are completelyย righteousย in Him!
We are completelyย holyย in Him!
We are completelyย forgivenย in Him!
We are completelyย acceptedย in Him!ย
We are completely, everlastingly, perfectlyย sinlessย in Him!

Christ’s sympathy!
Christ’s sympathy!
(Octavius Winslow, “The Tears of Christ”)ย
“Jesus wept!”ย John 11:35ย
The Creator of all worlds, the Author of all beings, the Upholder of the universe–raining tears of human woe and sympathy upon a grave!ย
Oh, there lives not a being in the universe who can enter into our bereavements with the sympathy, the support, and the soothing of Christ!ย
They wereย tears of sympathy. His heart was touched, deeply touched, with sympathy for the sorrow of others. He wept because the mourning sisters wept. He mingled His tears with theirs.ย
This is true sympathy,ย “weeping with those who weep,”ย making their sorrow our own. How really our Lord does this with His people. So completely is He our Surety–that He takes our sins and infirmities, our trials and sorrows upon Himself, as if they were all and entirely His own. Our sins were so completely laid upon Him–that not one remains charged to the account of those who believe in Jesus.ย
Our present griefs are so entirely absorbed in Him, that,ย
ย softened by His love,
ย soothed by His sympathy,
ย supported by His grace–ย
the trial is welcome,ย
the affliction is sweet, andย
the rod of a Father’s chastening, buds and blossoms into delectable fruit.ย
Bereaved mourner, the sympathy of Christ is yours! The same Savior who wept at the grave of Bethany, now shares your grief. Do not imagine that your sorrow is isolated, or that your tears are forbidden or unseen. You have a merciful and faithful High Priest who is touched with your present calamity.ย
There exists no sympathy . . .ย ย
ย so real,ย
ย so perceptive,ย
ย so deep,ย
ย so tender,ย
ย so sanctifying–ย
asย Christ’s sympathy.ย
If your heavenly Father has seen it wise and good to remove from you theย spring of human pity–it is but that He may draw you closer beneath the wing of Jesus’ compassion, presence and love.ย
O child of sorrow, will not this suffice, that you possess Christ’s sympathy–as immeasurable and exhaustless as the ocean–as exquisite and changeless as His being! Yield your heart to His rich compassion!ย
Will Jesus be regardless of what I feel, and the sorrows under which I groan? Oh no! Theย sighย that bursts in secret from my heart is not secret to Him; theย tearย that is my food day and night and dropsย unperceived and unknown–is known and remembered by Him!ย
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses!” Hebrews 4:14-15ย
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book.”ย Psalm 56:8
Growing in grace
Growing in grace
(Thomas Moor, “Counsels and Thoughts for the Spiritual Life of Believers” 1882)
Remember that among your chief thoughts of the Lord Jesus, one must ever have a prominent place: that He is ever looking down upon you and watching you with tenderest love, and ordering all things for your good.ย
Sometimes it is spiritualย medicine, at other times it is spiritualย nourishment–but at all times it is spiritual good, and just what is best for you. He sees and knows just what is best for each day and hour. So, always when you think of Him, think of Him as thus looking down upon you and ever caring for you.
The Holy Spirit is ever leading us toย thinkย of Christ and toย liveย for Christ and continually toย lookย to Christ.
The natural mind makesย selfย the center, and self the end.ย
The spiritual mind makesย Christย the center, and Christ the end.ย
The more we seek Christ, and the less we seek self–the more we please Him.
Christ is the source and end both ofย graceย on earth andย gloryย in Heaven.ย
Grace in the heart, is glory in its beginnings.ย
Glory in Heaven, is grace in its full consummation.ย
Growing in graceย is living more upon Christ, and living more for Christ, and growing more like Christ.
To learn of Christ and live upon Christ, is the highest experience of the soul here or hereafter!
๐ Precious Proverbs: Vomit

Proverbs 26:11ย (ESV)
Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.
My Thoughts ๐ญย
Wow, what an amazing word picture! Some of these proverbs just stick in your mind and heart (especially if youโve had a dog.) Itโs just so accurate and so full of His Wisdom that you canโt help but fall on your knees and ask once again for forgiveness.
ย ๐ Prayer 4 2day!ย
Loving Saviour, i donโt deserve the smallest of your mercies, and yet you continue to love, sustain and bless me in immeasurable ways!
Your love is blind to all of my faults, and ugly sides. I pray that You would work through me to love others compassionately and patiently. Amen.
Bring nothing but your sins and miseries!
Bring nothing but your sins and miseries!
(Thomas Wilcox)
“What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.” Philippians 3:8-9ย
When you come to Christ–you must leave behind you:
ย all your own righteousness,
ย all your own holiness,ย
ย all your own sanctification,
ย all your own duties,ย
ย all your own tears,ย
ย all your own repentings, etc.ย
Oh, this is hard!ย
You mustย bring nothing but your sins and miseriesย to Him. Otherwise, Christ is not fit for you–nor you for Christ!
๐ Precious Proverbs: The Unreliable Person

Proverbs 25:19ย (NLT)
Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.
My Thoughts ๐ญย
Ouch! We all know how much it hurts when we fail to put our trust in faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, it can really hurt us.
ย ๐ Prayer 4 2day!ย
Holy Father, forgive us when weโve been the unreliable friend, help us to walk in your Spirit and show your steadfast love to others, in Jesus name, amen.
In everything give thanks!
In everything give thanks!
(Thomas Watson, “All Things for Good”)
“We know that God causesย everythingย to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
See what cause the saints have to be frequent in the work ofย thanksgiving!ย In this, Christians are defective; though they are much inย supplication–yet they are little inย thanksgiving. The apostle says. “In everything give thanks!“ย 1 Thessalonians 5:18ย
Why so?ย Because God makes everything work together for our good.ย
We thank theย physician, though he gives us a bitter medicine which makes us nauseated–because it is to make us well. We thank any man who does us a good turn; and shall we not be thankful to God–who makesย everythingย work for good to us?
God loves a thankful Christian!ย Job thanked Godย when He took all away:ย “The Lord has taken away–blessed be the name of the Lord!” Job 1:21. Many will thank God when Heย gives; Job thanks Him when Heย takes away, because he knew that God would work good out of it.
We read of saints withย harpsย in their hands–an emblem of praise. Revelation 14:2. Yet we meet many Christians who haveย tearsย in their eyes, andย complaintsย in their mouths! But there are few with their harps in their hands–whoย praise God in affliction.
To beย thankful in affliction–is a work peculiar to a saint.ย
Every bird can sing in spring–but few birds will sing in the dead of winter!ย
Everyone, almost, can be thankful inย prosperity–but a true saint can be thankful inย adversity!ย
Well may we, in theย worstย that befalls us, have a psalm of thankfulness–because God works all things together for our good.ย Oh, be much in giving thanks to God!

My Thoughts ๐ญย
Each time i read this proverb i think of my lovely wife Sarah. When she has a bad hypo and her blood sugar goes really low (she has type 1 diabetes – T1D), Sarah always has a piece of toast with local honey on the top. Honey is good and itโs definitely sweet to the taste! ๐ย

๐ Precious Proverbs: A Fool

Proverbs 23:9ย (ESV)
Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words.
๐ Prayer 4 2day!ย
Oh be merciful to me a sinner!ย
The devil’s old delusion!
The devil’s old delusion!
(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)
“John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him: You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire!” Luke 3
We have, in these verses, a specimen of John the Baptist’s ministry. It is a portion of Scripture which should always be especially interesting to a Christian mind.
We should first mark theย holy boldnessย with which John addresses the multitudes who came to his baptism. He speaks to them as a “brood of vipers!” He saw the rottenness and hypocrisy of the profession which the crowd around him were making, and uses language descriptive of their case.ย
His head was not turned by popularity.ย
He did not care who was offended by his words.
The spiritual disease of those before him was desperate, and of long standing–and he knew that desperate diseases need strong remedies!
Well would it be for the Church of Christ, if it possessed moreย plain speaking ministersย in our days–like John the Baptist.ย
A morbid dislike to strong language;ย
an excessive fear of giving offence;ย
a constant flinching from directness and plain speaking–
are, unhappily, too much the characteristics of the modern Christian pulpit.ย
Uncharitable language is no doubt always to be deprecated. But there is no charity . . .
ย in flattering unconverted people,ย
ย in abstaining from any mention of their vices,ย
ย or in applying smooth names to damnable sins!ย
There are two texts which are too much forgotten by Christian preachers. In one it is written, “Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you.” Luke 6:26. In the other it is written, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men–or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were trying to please men–I would not be Christ’s servant.” Galatians 1:10
We should mark, also–how plainly John speaksย to his hearers about HELL and danger!ย
He tells them that there is a “coming wrath!”ย
He speaks of “the ax” of God’s judgment–and of unfruitful trees being “thrown into the fire!”
The subject of HELL is always offensive to human nature. The minister who dwells much upon it–must expect to find himself regarded asย barbaric, violent, unfeeling and narrow-minded!ย
Men love to hear “smooth things,” and to be told of peace, and not of danger. Isaiah 30:10ย
But the subject of Hell is one that ought not to be kept back, if we desire to do good to souls. It is one that our Lord Jesus Christ brought forward frequently in His public teachings. That loving Savior, who spoke so graciously of the way to Heaven–has also used the plainest language about the way to Hell.
Let us beware of being wise above that which is written, and more charitable than Scripture itself. Let the language of John the Baptist be deeply engraved on our hearts. Let us never be ashamed to avow our firm belief, that there is a “coming wrath” for the impenitent; and that it is possible for a man to be lost, as well as to be saved.ย
To beย silentย on the subject–is dreadful treachery to men’s souls. It only encourages them to persevere in wickedness, and fostersย the devil’s old delusionย in their minds,ย “You shall not surely die!”ย Genesis 3:4
That minister is surely our best friend–who tells us honestly of danger, and warns us, like John the Baptist, to “flee from the wrath to come!”
Never will a man flee–until he sees that there is real cause to be afraid.ย
Never will he seek Heaven–until he is convinced that he is on his way to Hell.ย
The religion in which there is no mention of Hell–is not the religion of John the Baptist, or of our Lord Jesus and His apostles!
๐ Precious Proverbs: Deep Pit

Proverbs 22:14ย (ESV)
The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the LORD is angry will fall into it.
My Thoughts ๐ญย
Coming from a broken home and being brought up with the life long radiation fallout of thisโฆLove is whatever affection you can grab, and women where objectified. The Lord was certainly angry at me and my lifestyle and being trapped in pit after pitโฆ
But God who is rich in love and mercy reached down and saved me. His Word was a sharp sword that cut straight through my soul and showed me what His true love is, and working through my lovely wife Sarah to show, teach and grow to be a husband fit for a princess! ๐ ๐๐ป
The way to do good is to amuse people!
The way to do good is to amuse people!
(J.C. Ryle, 1884)
ย
A great change has taken place in the last forty years. A quantity ofย church workย is continually being carried on both by clergymen and laymen, which, however well-meant, can hardly be calledย Christian–and in reality has a painful tendency to throw true Christian work into the background, if not to throw it entirely out!ย
No one, for instance, can fail to observe that a large number of professors are spending all their time and strength on church music, church decorations, church programs, and an incessant round of churchย attractions. Others are equally absorbed in social work, feeding the poor, and improved dwellings for everyone. Others are incessantly getting up popular concerts, secular lectures, and evening recreations. They proclaim everywhere, thatย the way to do good is to amuse people!
Others are always occupied withย secularย guilds, and societies, and associations–and think you very wrong and heathenish if you do not join them. Myriads ofย professorsย are restlessly busy about such things from one end of the land to the other; and superficial observers are often saying,ย “What a great deal of church-work there is in these days!”
Now I would not for a moment be supposed to mean that all the things I have just mentioned are wrong and wicked. Yet I doubt whether the present state of things is altogether healthy. I doubt whether the work of the Holy Spirit on hearts and consciences, is not insensibly being left out in the cold and neglected. Amidst the incessant hustle and bustle about matters ofย entirely secondary importance–I doubt whether the sort of direct spiritual work to which the Apostles wholly gave themselves, receives as much attention as it ought.ย
It is quite certain that musical services, and church decorations, and concerts, and bazaars, and social work, and the like–will not save souls.ย
It is equally certain that, without repentance, and faith, and holy living, and practical, self-denying, kindly charity–no one is fit for Heaven. Do these simple, old-fashioned graces fill the place which they ought to do, in the daily proceedings of many so-called church-workers in this day? I confess I doubt it exceedingly.ย
I certainly see on every side a vast increase of what people call “church-work.” But there is little or no increase of true religion. There undoubtedly is moreย showย andย glitterย andย display. But I extremely doubt whether there is more spiritual reality, and more growth of practical godliness.
๐ Precious Proverbs: Tongue

Proverbs 21:23ย (ESV)
Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.
My Thoughts ๐ญย
Wow, i know all about this one. Who can tame the tongue?! Oh help us Jesus, Amen! ย ๐๐ป
Comfort, safety, strength, holiness!
Comfort, safety, strength, holiness!
(George Everard, “Talks about Home Life” 1878)
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable toย sympathizeย with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are.” Hebrews 4:15ย
There is noย comfort, but in Christ’s bosom.
There is noย safety, but by Christ’s side.
There is noย strength, but in Christ’s arm.
There is noย holiness, but in Christ’s footsteps.
Look up and see Christ, the merciful and gracious Savior, bending over you in most tender compassion.ย
He is very near to you. He marks . . .
ย each sigh,ย
ย each desire,ย
ย each tear,ย
ย each prayer.ย
He thinks upon and sympathizes with you.
“Let us then approach the throne of grace withย confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16ย
๐ Precious Proverbs: Not Wise

Proverbs 20:1ย (ESV)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
My Thoughts ๐ญย
Living in England(and probably your country too?), you grow up learning that drinking alcohol isnโt just a pasttime, itโs a national sport and essential to be cool. How deceitful is sin and the world?!ย
One of my fave quotes is: “I would not put a thief in my mouth to steal my brains.โ โ William Shakespeare
Letโs thank God today for his Truth and Wisdom that never changesโฆIt changes us! ๐ย
They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!
They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!
“Theย eyesย of the Lord are upon the righteous.
ย Hisย earsย are open unto their cry.” Psalm 34:15
The Lord observes His redeemed people with approval and tender consideration.ย They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!ย He watches each one of them as carefully and intently, as if there were only that one creature in the whole universe!
Thus the Lord’s eyes and ears are both turned upon His saints. His whole mind is occupied with them. If they are slighted by all others–they are never neglected by Him. He hears their cry at once, even as a mother is sure to hear her sick babe. The cry may be broken, plaintive or feeble–yet the Father’s quick ear catches each note of lament or appeal, and He is quick to answer His children’s voice!
“Theย eyesย of the Lord watch over those who do right,
ย and Hisย earsย areย attentive to their prayers.”ย 1 Peter 3:12ย
๐ Precious Proverbs: Man’s Wrath

Proverbs 19:19ย (ESV)
A man of great wrath will pay the penalty, for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again.
My Thoughts ๐ญย
How many times do you see/hear this Truth throughout life. When i first became a Christian and thought i was reading the bible, when all of the time it was reading me. Letโs thank God today for hisliving breathing Word that transforms! ๐๐ป
Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!
Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!
“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42ย
We should observe what a high commendation our Lord Jesus Christ pronounced on Mary’s choice.ย There was a deep meaning in these words. They were spoken not only for Mary’s sake, but for the sake of all Christ’s believing people in every part of the world. They were meant to encourage all true Christians . . .
ย to be single-eyed and whole-hearted,
ย to follow the Lord fully,ย
ย to walk closely with God,
ย to make soul-business immeasurably their first business, and
ย to think comparatively little of the things of this fleeting world.
The true Christian’s portion is the grace of God. It is the only good thing which is substantial, satisfying, real, and lasting. The grace of God is . . .
ย ย better in sickness–and better in health,
ย better in youth–and better in old age,
ย better in adversity–and better in prosperity,
ย better in life–and better in death,
ย better in time–and better in eternity.ย
No circumstance and no position can be imagined, in which it is not better for man to have the grace of God.
The true Christian’s possession shall never be taken from him.ย
He alone, of all mankind, shall never be stripped of his inheritance.ย
Kings must one day leave their palaces.
Rich men must one day leave their money and lands–they only hold them until they die.ย
But the poorest saint on earth has aย treasureย of which he will never be deprived. The grace of God, and the favor of Christ–are riches which no man can take from him. They will go with him to the grave when he dies. They will rise with him in the resurrection morning, and be his to all eternity!
What doย weย know of this “better part” which Mary chose? Have we chosen it for ourselves? Can we say with truth that it is ours? Let us never rest until we can. Let us choose life, while Christ offers it to us without money and without price. Let us seek treasure in Heaven–lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!
๐ Precious Proverbs: He Who Finds

Proverbs 18:22ย (ESV)
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.
My Thoughts ๐ญย

It Is Grace
It is grace at the beginning, and grace at the end.ย So that when youย and I come to lie upon our death beds,ย the one thing that should comfortย and help and strengthen us there is the thing that helped us in the beginning.ย Not what we have been, not what we have done, but the grace of God in Jesus Christ our Lord.ย The Christian life starts with grace,ย it must continue with grace, it ends with grace.ย Grace wondrous grace.ย By the grace of God I am what I am.ย Yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

Christian! God is near at hand whenever you approach Him in prayer.ย
Oh, comforting truth!ย You have a God at hand . . .
ย to listen to the softest breath of prayer,
ย to listen to every confession of sin,
ย to listen to every cry of need,
ย to listen to every utterance of sorrow,

Oh, be ravished with this!
Oh, be ravished with this!
(Charles Spurgeon)
“That the world may know that You sent Me andย loved them even as You have loved Me!”ย John 17:23ย
Can you believe it . . .
ย thatย youย should be the object of God’s delight,
ย thatย youย should be the object of the Father’s love as truly as Christ is!ย
See the amazing sacrifice which the Father made in giving Jesus to us.ย
Think what it cost Him to tear His Well-Beloved from His bosom and send Him down below to be despised and rejected.ย
Think what it cost Him to nail Jesus up to yonder cross, and then forsake Him and hide His face from Him, because He had laid all our sins upon Him.ย
Oh, the love He must have had to us, thus to have made His best Beloved to become a curse for us, as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree!”ย
I want you to get this truth right into your souls, dear friends.ย
Do not hold it as a dry doctrine, but let it penetrate your heart.ย
Oh, when the river ofย God’s great love to usย came rolling in like a mighty torrent, what a sea of love was there! Now we are borne onward forever by the mighty sweep of infinite love into an everlasting blessedness which tongues and lips can never fully set forth!ย
Oh, be ravished with this!ย Be in ecstasy at love so amazing, so divine! The Father lovesย youย even as He loves His Son! After the same manner and sort, He loves all His redeemed people.
Can you believe it!ย
Oh, if the love of Jesus once enters into a man’s soul . . .
ย ย it will forever transform him,
ย ย it will sway him with the noblest passions,
ย ย it will make him a zealot for Christ,
ย ย it will cast out his pride and selfishness,
ย ย it will change him into the image of Christ, and
ย ย fit him to dwell in Heaven where love is eternally perfected.
We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!
We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!
(Charles Spurgeon, “Treasury of David“)
“The Lord raises the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy from the dunghill!” Psalm 113:7ย
What a gracious stoop of love! He frequently lifts the lowest of mankind out of their poverty and degradation, and adopts them into His family.ย
His gracious Spirit is continually visiting the down-trodden, giving beauty for ashes to those who are cast down, and elevating the hearts of His mourners until they shout for joy.ย
These upliftings of grace are here ascribed directly to the divine hand, and truly those who have experienced them will not doubt the fact that it is the Lord alone who brings His people up from the dust of sorrow and death. When no hand but His can help, He interposes and the work is done.ย
“And lifts the needy from the dunghill”ย whereon they lay like worthless refuse, cast off and cast out–left as they thought, to rot into destruction, and to be everlastingly forgotten.ย
How great a stoop from the height of His throne, to a dunghill! How wonderful is that power which occupies itself in lifting up beggars, all befouled with the filthiness in which they lay! For He lifts them out of the dunghill, not disdaining to search them out from amidst the base things of the earth–that He may bring to nothing the great ones, and pour contempt upon all human glorying.ย
What a dunghill was that upon which we lay by nature!ย
What a mass of corruption is our original estate!
What a heap of loathsomeness we have accumulated by our sinful lives!
We could never have risen out of this corruption by our own efforts–we were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!ย
Almighty were the arms which lifted us, which are still lifting us, and will lift us into the perfection of Heaven itself!
He Has Risen โจ Happy Easter! ๐

๐ฌ Quote 4 2day…ย
“You have saved our lives, we are eternally grateful!“
Looking at the world through the cross!
Looking at the world through the cross!
(Octavius Winslow)
“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14ย
Jesus could accomplish man’s redemption in no other way than by crucifixion. He must die–and die the death of the cruel cross.ย
What light and glory beam aroundย the cross!
Of what prodigies of grace, is it the instrument,ย
of what glorious truths, is it the symbol,ย
of what mighty transforming power, is it the source!ย
Around the cross gathers all the light of the Old Testament economy:ย
ย it explains everyย symbol,ย
ย it substantiates everyย shadow,ย
ย it solves everyย mystery,ย
ย it fulfills everyย type,ย
ย it confirms everyย prophecy,ย
of that dispensation which had eternally remained unmeaning and inexplicable, but for the death of the Son of God upon the cross.ย
Not theย pastย only–but allย futureย splendor gathers around the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It assures us of the ultimate reign of the Savior, and tells of the reward which shall spring from His sufferings. And while its one arm points to the divine counsels of eternity past–with the other it points to the future triumph and glory of Christ’s kingdom in the eternity to come! Such is the lowly yet sublime, the weak yet mighty instrument, by which the sinner is saved and God eternally glorified.ย
The cross of Christ is . . .
ย the grand consummation of all preceding dispensations of God to men;
ย the meritorious procuring cause of all spiritual blessings to our fallen race;
ย the scene of Christ’s splendid victories over all His enemies and ours;
ย the most powerful incentive to all evangelical holiness;
ย the instrument which is to subjugate the world to the supremacy of Jesus;
ย the source of all true peace, joy and hope;
ย the tree beneath whose shadow all sin expires, all grace lives.ย
The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!ย
What a holy thrill these words produce in the heart of those who love the Savior!ย
How significant is their meaning, how precious is their influence!ย
Marvelous and irresistible, is the power of the cross! The cross of Christ has . . .
ย subdued many a rebellious will;ย
ย broken many a marble heart;ย
ย laid low many a vaunting foe;ย
ย overcome and triumphed, when all other instruments have failed;ย
ย transformed the lion like heart of man, into the lamb like heart of Christ!ย
When lifted up in its own bare simplicity and inimitable grandeur–the cross of Christ has won and attracted millions to its faith, admiration, and love!ย
What a marvelous power does this cross of Jesus possess! It changes the Christian’s entire judgment of the world.ย Looking at the world through the cross–his opinion is totally revolutionized.ย
He sees the world as it really is–a sinful, empty, vain thing.ย
He learns its iniquity, in that it crucified the Lord of life and glory.ย
His expectations from the world, and his love to the world, are transformed.ย
He has found another object of love–the Savior whom the world cast out and slew.ย
His love to the world is destroyed by that power which alone could destroy it–the crucifying power of the cross.ย
It is the cross which eclipses, in the view of the true believer, the glory and attraction of every other object.ย
What is the weapon by which faith combats with, and overcomes the world? What but the cross of Jesus!ย
Just as the natural eye, gazing for a while upon the sun, is blinded for the moment to all other objects by its overpowering effulgence; so to the believer, concentrating his mind upon the glory of the crucified Savior, studying closely the wonders ofย graceandย loveย andย truthย meeting in the cross–the world with all its attraction fades into the full darkness of an eclipse.ย
Christ and His cross infinitely better than the world and its trinkets!ย
“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14ย
The delight which God has in His redeemed people!
The delight which God has in His redeemed people!ย
“I willย rejoiceย over them to do them good.” Jeremiah 32:41ย
“Asย a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,ย so your God willย rejoiceย over you!”ย Isaiah 62:5ย
The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take greatย delightย in you . . . He willย rejoiceย over you with singing!” Zephaniah 3:17ย
How heart-cheering to the believer, isย theย delightย which God has in His redeemed people!
We cannot see any reason inย ourselvesย why the Lord should take pleasure in us. We cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan, being burdened; conscious of our sinfulness, and deploring our unfaithfulness.ย
And we fear thatย God’s peopleย cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies, that they may rather lament our infirmities, than admire our graces.ย
But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery–that as the bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so does the Lord rejoice over us!ย
We do not read anywhere that God delights in the cloud-capped mountains, or the sparkling stars–but we do read that His delights are with the sons of men.ย
We do not find it written that evenย angelsย give His soul delight; nor does He say, concerning cherubim and seraphim, “You shall be calledย Hephzibah, for the Lordย delightsย in you”; but He does say all that to poor fallen creatures like ourselves, debased and depraved by sin–but redeemed and saved by His grace.ย
In what strong language He expresses His delight in His people! Who could have conceived of the eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, “He will take greatย delightย in you . . . He will rejoice over you withย singing!”ย
As He looked upon the world He had made, He said, “It is very good”. But when He beheld those who are the purchase of Jesus’ blood, His own chosen ones, it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer–but overflowed in divine exclamations of joy.ย
Should not we utter ourย grateful responseย to such a marvelous declaration of His love, and sing, “I will rejoice in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”ย
May we see our sins
May we see our sins
(Henry Law, “Family Prayers”)
O God the Holy Spirit, have mercy upon us miserable sinners. Move, we beseech You, in our disordered hearts. Remove the deformities of unruly desires and hateful lusts. Chase away the mists and darkness of unbelief. Brighten our inner man with the pure light of truth. Sow abundantly the seeds of righteousness. Make our souls fragrant as the garden of the Lord. Enrich them with every godly fruit. Beautify them with heavenly grace. Be our comforter, our guide, our light, our sanctification.ย
Especially take of the things of Christ, and show them with enlarged power to our longing souls. May we daily learn more of His love, His grace, His tender compassion, His faithfulness, and His beauty. May we delight ourselves in Him with increased delight.ย Lead us to the cross, and show us in His wounds–the hateful character of sin.ย May we see our sins, as . . .ย
ย theย nailsย which transfixed Him,
ย theย cordsย which bound Him,
ย theย swordย which pierced Him,
ย theย thornsย which tore Him,
ย theย tauntsย which stung Him.ย
Help us to read in His cruel death, the reality and immensity of His love.ย
Open to us the wondrous volumes of glorious truth in the cry,ย “It is finished!”ย
Our atonement is forever achieved,ย
our debt is fully paid,ย
all our guilt is washed away,
all our sins most righteously forgiven,
our souls saved,
Hell vanquished,
the devil crushed,
Heaven won, andย
eternity of glory our rightful home!
Holy Spirit, deepen in us these saving lessons.ย
Write them with Your finger on the tablets of our hearts.ย
May our walk be . . .
ย sin-loathing,
ย sin-fleeing,
ย Christ-loving,
ย God-fearing!
Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil
Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil
(Charles Spurgeon)
“We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose!” Romans 8:28ย
The Christian does not merely hold this truth as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact. Everything has worked for good as yet.ย
Theย poisonous drugsย mixed in fit proportions, have worked the cure.ย
Theย sharp cutsย of the lancet, have cleansed out the infected flesh and facilitated the healing.ย
In every event of your life, God has always worked out the most divinely blessed results.
Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil–the believer’s heart is comforted, and he is enabled calmly to meet each trial as it comes. The believer can in the spirit of true resignation pray, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not mine! Send me what You will, my Father, so long as it comes from You!”
As foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!
As foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!ย
(Charles Spurgeon)
“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes!” Romans 1:16ย
To try to win a soul to Christ by keeping that soul in ignorance of any truth, is contrary to the mind of the Spirit. To endeavor to save men by mere claptrap, or entertainments, or excitements, or oratorical displays–isย as foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!ย
The best attraction is the gospel in its purity. The weapon with which the Lord conquers men, is the truth as it is in Jesus. The gospel will be found equal to every emergency. The gospel is anย arrowย which can pierce the hardest heart–aย balmย which will heal the deadliest wound. Preach it, and preach nothing else. Rely implicitly upon the old, old gospel.ย
You need no otherย netsย when you fish for men; those your Master has given you are strong enough for the large fish, and have meshes fine enough to hold the little ones.ย
Spread those nets and no others, and you need not fear the fulfillment of His Word, “I will make you fishers of men.”
The diamonds of Heaven!
The diamonds of Heaven!
“You keep track of all myย sorrows.
ย You have collected all myย tearsย in Your bottle.
ย You have recorded each one in Your book.”ย Psalm 56:8
“Behold, he is praying!” Acts 9:11ย
Prayers are instantly noticed in heaven. The moment Saul began to pray, the Lord heard him. Here is comfort for the distressed but praying soul. Oftentimes a poor broken-hearted one bends his knee, but can only utter his wailing in the language of sighs and tears; yet that groan has made all the harps of heaven thrill with music; that tear has been caught by God and treasured in theย lachrymatory of Heaven.ย “You have collected all my tears in Your bottle.”ย Thisย implies that they are caught as they flow!ย
The suppliant, who groans out his words, will be well understood by the Most High God. He may only look up with misty eye; butย prayer is the falling of a tear!ย Tears areย the diamonds of Heaven!ย Sighsย are a part of the music of Jehovah’s court, and are numbered with the most sublime strains which reach the majesty on high!
Do not think that your prayers, however weak or trembling, will be unregarded. Our God not onlyย hearsย prayers, but alsoย lovesย to hear them. “He does not forget the cry of the humble.”ย
True, He does not regard proud looks and lofty words.ย
He no concern for the pomp and pageantry of kings.ย
He does not listen not to the swell of martial music.ย
He does not regard the triumph and pride of man.ย
But wherever there is a contrite heart full with sorrow, or a lip quivering with agony, or a deep groan, or a penitential sigh่he heart of Jehovah is open! He marks that prayer down inย the registry of His memory!ย He puts our prayers, like rose leavesๅญetween the pages of His book of remembrance, and when the volume is opened at last there shall be a precious fragrance springing up therefrom!
When a tear is wept by you–do not think that God does not behold it
When a tear is wept by you–do not think that God does not behold it
(Charles Spurgeon)
“The LORD said:
ย I have indeedย seenย the misery of My people in Egypt.
ย I haveย heardย them crying out because of their slave drivers,
ย and I amย concernedย about their suffering.
ย So I have come down toย rescueย them . . .” Exodus 3:7, 8
Perhaps no figure of speech represents God in a more gracious light, than when He is spoken of as stooping from His throne and coming down from Heaven to attend to the wants and woes of His redeemed people.ย
How can we but love Him, when we know that He . . .
ย numbers the very hairs of our heads,
ย marks all our paths, and
ย orders all our ways?
When a tear is wept by you–do not think that God does not behold it, for . . .
“You keepย trackย of all my sorrows.
ย You haveย collectedย all my tears in Your bottle.
ย You haveย recordedย each one in Your book.” Psalm 56:8ย
Your sigh is able to move the heart of Jehovah,ย
your whisper can incline His ear unto you,ย
your prayer can stay His hand,ย
your faith can move His arm!
Do not think that God sits on high taking no account of you. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward Him.
There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!
There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!
(Charles Spurgeon)ย
“Be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age!” Matthew 28:20ย
It is well that there is One who is ever the same, and who is ever with us. It is well thatย there is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life. O my soul, do not set your affections upon rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures–but set your heart upon Him who abides forever faithful to you. Do not build your house upon the moving quicksands of a deceitful world–but found your hopes upon this rock, which, amid descending rain and roaring floods, shall stand immovably secure!
My soul, I charge you–lay up yourย treasureย in the only secure cabinet; store yourย jewelsย where you can never lose them. Put yourย allย in Christ; set . . .
ย all yourย affectionsย on His person,
ย all yourย hopeย in His merit,
ย all yourย trustย in His efficacious blood,
ย all yourย joyย in His presence,
and so you may laugh at loss and defy difficulties.ย
Remember thatย all the flowers in the world’s garden wither and die–and the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth.ย Death’s black extinguisherย must soon put out your candle. Oh! how sweet to haveย sunlight–when theย candleย is gone! Theย dark floodย must soon roll between you and all you have!ย
So wed your heart to Him who will never leave you. Trust yourself with Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death’s stream, and who will land you safely on the celestial shore, and make you sit with Him in heavenly places forever!ย
Go, sorrowing son of affliction–tell your secret troubles to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Trust all your concerns with Him . . .
ย who never can be taken from you,
ย who will never leave you, and
ย who will never let you leave Him, even “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”ย
“I am with you always,”ย is enough for my soul to live upon–though all others forsake me!
Praise The Lord!
Psalm 150:6ย (ESV)ย
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!ย Praise the Lord!

Job 12:7-10 (ESV)ย
โBut ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
This is another photo taken on our day trip to Chessington world of adventures a few years ago. The crazy thing isโฆI had no idea that this Tiger(or any of the creatures in my recent posts) were looking at me until i returned home and zoomed in on the photos whilst viewing them on my iMac, lol! ๐ย
I hope thisย beautiful Tiger puts another smile on your face,?ย ๐ย

“Iโve never seen so clearly since going blind” 20 Years Of Sight-loss!

Hi friends. As it is 20 years to the day since i went blindโฆI thought iโd share one of my older posts(yet updated) from 4 years ago when i was asked to share a little of what i went through when i lost my sight at 24.
I really hope that youโll have the time to read it, and that it blesses you in some small way?!ย
Here Goes…
I was asked by our Minister Nik if i would share my Testimony in the parade service. The theme was โFaith through Adversityโ, Nik said “i can ask you some straight forward questions, it will only take about 5 minutes(or so we thought)โ โYeah, ok, if you think it will help?โ.
Sunday 8th May 2016…
Walking into the church building Sunday morning, it was quite full, as it was parade service, the scouts and other uniformed groups were there, but Nik found us seats at the front, then showed me up the steps and where iโd stand to speak, after testing the microphone i remembered the steps and sat back down.ย
As iโm blind, i canโt use any notes, so i spent a little time trying to etch some answer headings into my mind, hoping iโd not veer too far off track. I then prayed that iโd use this time to Glorify Him, as i talked about the Truth that sets us free, and how iโm not ashamed of the Gospel, itโs the power of God unto Salvation to all who believe…please make it real(be careful praying this, lol).
It;s time…
Steve, we are looking at people who have showed faith in difficult circumstances and I have asked you to share some of your story with us.
Many people here, even those who have seen you around at various church events may not know that you are blind.
My Testimony…
Nik stood next to me at the microphone and started with the first 2 questions:
Have you always been blind? How and when did you loose your sight?
I explained iโd been fully sighted until i was 24, and after 2 brain haemorrhages(March – July 2000) that burst my optic nerve, iโm now registered blind and have Severe Hypertensive Retinopathy.
“How did that change your life?”
I said โI can only scratch the surface this morning, but if ever you see me walking around here or in town, please ask me anything. But now i’ll try and sketch you a quick picture and give you a flavour of what happenedโฆ”
โI went to the gym 6-7 days a week, played football most evenings and was quite violent, acting the tough guy. ย I wasnโt a Christian, i hadnโt been born again, or even been inside a church buildingโฆsoโฆAs i stepped out of the eye consultants office after being told iโd be blind for the rest of my life, it was out of character but i collapsed on the floor sobbingg my eyes out. And as my crying out got a little too loud they pulled me into a small empty roomโฆ.And this was the easy bitโ.
โFollowing this was pure isolation… all my football mates left me, i lost my job, my car and ability to do anything…i lost everything, i was completely broken, and on top of that i was left to my acusing thoughts โNobody wants you, youโre useless now, unwanted, rejected, unloved and unlovable!!โ
Suddenly, as i was telling my story…
My mouth was silenced, an image of Jesus in Glory(Revelation 1) filled my mind, it wasย so clear(not blurred by my blindness)ย I could see His flaming eyes of judgmentโฆthenโฆthe image changed, it was Jesus on the cross, now His eyes were filled with Mercy, Compassion & Grace, and while looking down straight at me he said โI did this for you, so that you can live. IโฆLOVEโฆYOU!!!
I started sobbing uncontrollably, and it took a couple of minutes for me to try and start talking againโฆ.but more sobbingโฆi was completely undone. But these tears were different!
I already knew He’d given His life so i could live. He’d come down so farย to save me it is immeasurable. His blood washed me clean, white as snow. He’s forgiven me all my sins, past, present and future, and there is no more condemnation for me, it is finished!
Iโd been ย praying for so long for God to โBreak my heart for what broke Hisโ and sang the songs many times, but rarely had i caught a glimpse of the true cost of His Love, and His free gift of Grace to those who Repent and Believe in Him. I knew He wanted me to share the True Gospel to people listening(and now reading), as it alone is the only Hope. It is the Power of God unto Salvation for anyone that believes.
Still sobbing, i continued…
My every word was a different pitch but i said โMy pit was so dark, my accusing thoughts were too heavy, and this led to a daily cycle of waking up and trying to kill myselfโฆfailing, which made me feel worseโฆthen drinking so much i could drown them out for the rest of the day, until i woke the next day, then it started again.ย
I didnโt have the strength to kill myself, and i didnโt have the strength to live…i was without God, and without Hope!
Nik, whoโs hand was rested on my shoulder asked question 4 “I know you were deeply unhappy at the time, what changed that?”
The world followed itโs pattern and sent me to Counselling, then Psychotherapy & finally Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, they didnโt work, they all had no answer for me, they couldnโt reach far enough down to pull me out. I needed a Saviour, I needed the light of the Gospel!ย
The Good News &ย Lovely Sarah…
Meeting Sarah changed my life! I have no idea how sheโs put up with me. Sheโs ย been so patient and long suffering as i tried attacking her Faith and this Jesus! But she kept on loving me. Sarah always seemed to have a rock to stand on no matter how bad things got for her, and i was being dragged deeper into the sinking sand. She always had this Blessed Hope that i didnโt,
Jesus worked through Sarah to shine the light of the Gospel, the Good News i was dying for.ย
Words failed me as i was trying to describe how much i love Sarah, so when my mind filled with thoughts of how far weโve grown together in loveโฆi broke down again.ย
The sobbing was still making me pause every few words, but mentioned Jesus doesnโt want to see anyone perish, but he pursues you, He has come to seek and save that which is lost. He loves you and no matter how bad or hopeless you think you are, Heโll keep coming with His free gift of Salvation!
Nik asked Question 5 “some people would say that your life must be worse now, would you agree with them?”
Iโd gone way over my time slot, and i was almost pulled away from the mic as i was so overwhelmedโฆBUT i knew these tears were not about me, or my losses. I had 1 focus and that was to share the Truth that sets us free. I had no feeling of sorrow or pain. I knew it must have seemed like this to the congregation, and i thought theyโd stick me in a counselling room when iโd finished!
The Holy Spirit was filling me like never before, and made the Power of the Gospel so real to me i almost exploded.
I continued โI wouldnโt agree with anyone who thinks(or measures) life by how good our circumstances are. Iโd lead them to 2 Corinthians 4 & 5 where it talks about living by Faith, not by Sight, and now that we are born again in the Spirit, we should walk by the Spirit. Not living for things that are seen which are temporary(like my sight loss), but living for the unseen which is Eternalโ
โI used to hate this song, but now iโd play it every service if i couldโฆhave you heard Amazing Grace, the Chris Tomlin version? If you pass me in the street youโll normally hear me singing or humming these words:”
“Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.ย I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see. My chains are gone I’ve been set free. My God, my Saviour has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy reigns. Unending love, amazing graceโ.
โIโve never seen so clearly since going blindโ This is one of my fave sayings.ย ๐ย
Nik then walked me back to my seat next to Sarah. The church was completely silent, it had been silent since i first started sobbing. I could feel Sarah was upset as she didnโt react for a while, then she said โPeople kept on running up and passing me tissuesโ. Nik sat down next to Sarah, and Sarah said โYouโre not borrowing him again to speakโ.ย
After the service people came over and said they really connected with the things i said, although i think everyone thinks iโm back in dark depression again, lol.
He showed me the reality and Power of transformation in His Gospel, and how vital it is to share it, as Jesus is the ย Way, the Truth and the Life and no-one gets to ย the Father but by Him. Heโs the forgiver of Sins, breaker of chains, and the only Salvation for Eternal Life in Heaven.
John 3:14-21ย New King James Version (NKJV)
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but[a] have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 โHe who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.โ
I felt i needed to share this post to try and explain a little more of what was happening to me, and maybe reach out to someone who is struggling with the creeping death called Depression,or who is just simply lost and without God, and without Hope.
You Guide Me
Psalm 73:23-26 (ESV)
23 Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength[a] of my heart and my portion forever.

Proverbs 16:24ย Amplified Bible (AMP)
