Psalm 46: 1-7 (ESV)

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

โ˜ข๏ธ How Are You All?

Sarah with arems around Steve

Hi friends!

We just wanted to send you a quick message to ask how youโ€™re all doing during this challenging time?

Donโ€™t forget we have a reason to sing with gratitude to the Lord every time we wake up to a new day filled with grace and mercy. Many times we forget to express our gratefulness in these busy, crazy and painful times. However, we can sing songs of thankfulness for Godโ€™s goodness and make a joyful noise as the true Spiritual church.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

I do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:9-14)

Stay safe and keep singing to the Lord! ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ˜€โ™ฅ๏ธ

Yours in Christ

The Complaint!

The Complaint!

(James Smith, 1864)

“O my God, my soul is cast down within me!”ย Psalm 42:6ย

Andย whyย are you cast down?ย

“My heart is burdened with a sense of my short-comings.ย
ย Every holyย dutyย I perform is so imperfect.ย
ย Every goodย purposeย I form is so soon frustrated.ย
ย Everyย hopeย of seeing better days is so soon beclouded.
ย Myย heartย is so fearfully depraved.
ย Myย lifeย is so unlike the life of Jesus.
ย Myย affectionsย are so unholy.
ย Myย prayersย are so brief and heartless.
ย Myย praisesย are so feeble and fitful.
ย Iย doย so little good.
ย Iย liveย to so little purpose.
ย Myย evidencesย are so dim.ย
ย Myย prospectsย are so overcast.ย
ย I am harassed sometimes with theย fear of death.ย
ย I cannot grasp the glories ofย Heaven.ย
ย I am dissatisfied with theย world–and yet glued to it!ย
ย I hateย sin–and yet fall into it!ย
ย I am a riddle, a mystery, a mass of inconsistency!ย
ย Is it, then, any wonder that I am cast down?”ย

No, if you look atย yourself, and pore over the things you have named–then it is no wonder that you are cast down! They are enough to cast anyone down! But if you carry them to theย throne of grace, if you thereย confessย them before God, if you look to the mercy of Jesus–then, in spite of them, you will not long be cast down.ย

I know it is difficult to do this. There is aย natural pronenessย to pore over such things. One feels at times a secret likingย to indulge in self-pity.ย

But we must look away fromย self–for if we do not, we shall become anxious, doubting and downcast! We mustย run the race–not looking atย ourย imperfections, short-comings, and failures–but looking unto Jesus. He knows what weย are. He knew what weย wouldbe–before He called us by His grace; yes, before He shed His sin-atoning blood for us!ย
Heย lovedย us, as sinners.ย
Heย diedย for us, as sinners.ย
Heย calledย us, as sinners.ย
Heย savesย us, as sinners.ย
He will have great glory by savingย such great sinners.ย We cannot do anything toย repayย Him for His wondrous love. Salvation is byย free grace–from first to last! Believe this, and it will raise up your drooping mind!

The life-boat of free graceย has put you on board theย vessel of salvation, and that will convey you safely to theย port of glory!ย Do not look atย yourย spiritual destitution, or feebleness, or incapacity, or imperfections–but trust in yourย Pilot, rely on yourย Captain, and expect His mercy and merit to land you safely in Heaven at last!ย

Regardless of any amount of spiritual progress, yourย dying prayerย will still be,ย “God be merciful unto me–a sinner!”

Hope in God!
Hisย mercyย is great unto the Heavens,ย
Hisย graceย is as free as the air,ย
Hisย loveย is as changeless as His nature,
Hisย promiseย is as immutable as His love.ย

He will save you for His own sake, and present you before assembled worlds as aย monument of His mercy,ย and aย trophy of His grace!

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?ย Why so disturbed within me?
ย
Put your hope in God,ย for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and ย my God!”ย Psalm 42:5

My Father’s home!

My Father’s home!

(James Smith, “The Better Land”)

“Do not be troubled. There are many rooms inย my Father’s home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with Me where I am!” John 14:1-3ย

How familiar with Heaven–how well acquainted with that “better land” must Jesus be! He calls itย “My Father’s home!”ย Sweet view of our eternal residence!

Dying is but ‘going home!’ Going home to our Father! Going to our Father’s home!

And shall we fear this? Fear it! Can we do anything other than eagerly desire it? Do we not wish to go home and see our Father? We shall not be strangers there–so many of our Christian friends have gone home before us. And even if some of our loved ones are not there–we could not possibly feel unhappy where JESUS is!

“I am leaving the world,” said Jesus, “and amย going to My Father!”ย Such should be our language in the prospect of death. O that, with child-like simplicity, we could receive into our minds the testimony of God’s Word! O that we could view death and Heaven–just as the Scriptures represent them! Where would ourย doubtsย andย fearsย be then? What would become of ourย reluctanceย to leave the world then? Then, if we spoke of departed Christian loved ones–we would use similar language to that of Judah in reference to his younger brother Benjamin,ย “He is this day with our Father!”ย We would no longer talk ofย losingย friends or relatives. Oh no! we should speak of them as being in our Father’s home, or of being with our Father!

My soul, I charge you in future to look to Heaven, simply asย your Father’s home!

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal!” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18ย

They sing best in their cages!

Grace logo

They sing best in their cages!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name!”ย  Psalm 33:21

Christians can rejoice even in the deepest distress. Although trouble may surround them, they still sing. Like many birds–they sing best in their cages!ย

Theย wavesย may roll over them, but their souls soon rise to the surface and see the light of God’s countenance.ย

In times ofย trouble, the presence of the Son of God in the fiery furnace with him fills his heart with joy.

He isย sickย andย suffering, but Jesus visits him and makes his bed for him.ย

He isย dying, but Jesus puts His arms around him and cries, “Fear not, beloved, to die is to be blessed–the waters of death have their fountainhead in Heaven. They are not bitter–they are as sweet as nectar, for they flow from the throne of God.”ย

As the departing saint wades through the stream and the billows gather around him, the same voice sounds in his ears, “Fear not, I am with you! Be not dismayed, I am your God.”

As he nears the borders of the infinite unknown, Jesus says, “Fear not, it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom!”

Thus strengthened and consoled, the believer is not afraid to die. No, he is even willing to depart, for since he has seen Jesus as the morning star, he longs to gaze upon Him as the sun in its strength. “I desire to depart andย be with Christ, which is better by far!” Philippians 1:23

Truly the presence of Jesus is all the Heaven we desire!ย

You must be born again!

Grace logo

You must be born again!

(Don Fortner)

“You must be born again!” John 3:7

In order for God to save a sinner two things must be done:ย
God must do something FOR you, and God must do something IN you.

ย  Redemptionย is the work of God FOR sinners.ย

ย  Regenerationย is the work of God IN sinners.ย

Both are the works of God. Man has nothing more to do with regeneration, than he has to do with redemption.

“You must be born again” because by nature we are fallen, sinful, depraved children of human flesh. All flesh is defiled. All flesh is corrupt. All flesh is sinful. All flesh is condemned. All flesh must die. Unless we are born of the Spirit, we will die in our sins, and our fleshย  shall be justly damned.

“You must be born again!”ย
You can reform your life without the new birth.ย
You can be baptized without the new birth.ย
You can join the church, be zealous in religion, teach a Bible class, serve as a deacon or elder; you can even preach with great success without being born again.ย

“You must be born again” for without the new birth . . .
ย  you will never enter the kingdom of God,ย
ย  you will never be a part of the family of God,ย
ย  you will never have eternal life,ย
ย  you will never be admitted into the presence of God’s glory in the bliss of Heaven.ย
Only new creatures will enter the New Jerusalem.ย
Only holy men will walk into the Holy City.ย
Only Heaven born citizens will possess the bliss of Heaven.

To be born again is to be made new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).ย
In the new birth, God the Holy Spirit gives chosen, redeemed sinners . . .
ย  a newย heartย to love God,
ย  a newย willย to bow to the rule of Christ,
ย  a newย mindย to understand the things of God,
ย  a new spiritualย natureย to know, enjoy, and live upon spiritual things,
ย  newย eyes, eyes of faith, with which to see Christ,
ย  newย earsย with which to hear His voice,
ย  newย hands, hands of faith, with which to lay hold of Christ and do His will,
ย  newย feet, with which to flee to Christ and walk with Him in the newness of life.

John 3:3, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again!”ย

What a compassionate, gracious arrangement!

Grace logo
What a compassionate, gracious arrangement!

(Susannah Spurgeon, “Words of Cheer and Comfort for Sick and Sorrowful Souls!” 1898)

“My times are in Your hand!”ย Psalm 31:15ย

Why then, need I worry or tremble? That great, loving, powerfulย handย keeps all the events of my life sealed and secure within its almighty clasp! Only He, my Maker and my Master, can permit them to be revealed to me as His will for me.ย What a compassionate, gracious arrangement!ย How eminently fitted to fulfill that sweet promise of His Word, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You!” If we fully believed this, we would be absolutely devoid of theย worryย which corrodes and chafes the daily life of so many professing Christians.

“My times.” Not one or twoย importantย epochs of my history only–butย everythingย that concerns me:
ย ย joysย that I had not expected,
ย ย sorrowsย that must have crushed me, if they could have been anticipated,ย
ย ย sufferingsย which might have terrified me by their grimness, had I looked upon them,
ย ย surprisesย which infinite love had prepared for me,
ย ย servicesย of which I could not have imagined myself capable–
all these lay in that mighty hand, as the purposes of God’s eternal will for me.ย

But, as they have developed gradually and silently–how great has been theย loveย which appeared enwrapping and enfolding each one!ย
Has not theย griefย been measured–while theย gladnessย has far more abounded?ย
Have not the comforts and consolations–exceeded the crosses and afflictions?ย
Have not all things been so arranged, and ordered, and undertaken, and worked out on our behalf–that we can but marvel at the goodness and wisdom of God, in meting out from that dearย handย of His, all the “times” that have passed over us?

You agree with me in all this, do you not, dear reader? Then I beg you to apply it to your present circumstances, however dark or difficult they may be.ย They have come directly from your Father’s hand to you, and they are His dear will for you!

The Savior’s abiding presence with His redeemed people!

Grace logo

The Savior’s abiding presence with His redeemed people!

(J.R. Miller, “The Practical Value of a Promise“)

“O LORD, You have searched me and You know me.
ย You know when I sit and when I rise;
ย You perceive my thoughts from afar.
ย You discern my going out and my lying down;
ย You are familiar with all my ways!
ย Before a word is on my tongue, You know it completely, O LORD!” Psalm 139:1-4

Doctrines are not such cold, lifeless things as some would have us to believe. There is no doctrine of Scripture which is not fitted toaffect the lifeย of him who believes it. Consider the proper influence upon us, of the doctrine and promise ofย the Savior’s abiding presence with His redeemed people. If we believe and always recollect that Christ is truly with us always–how will it affect us?

For one thing it will make us very thoughtful and careful in all our words and acts. Christ is present in Hisย holinessย as well as in His love and tenderness. His pure eyes see all our life, and see into our hearts. He is ever beholding us–our real inner life.

The thought of the Master’s eyeย upon us should . . .
ย  make us holy,
ย  rebuke our sins, and
ย  hold us back from evil.ย

We cannot do wicked things in the presence of even a pure and holy human friend. But could we be continually conscious of Christ’s perpetual presence with us, of His eye ever resting upon us, then . . .
ย  Could we run into sin?
ย  Could we live carelessly?
ย  Could we trifle?
ย  Could we speak sharp, bitter, or unkind words?
ย  Could we do unholy, unlovely things?ย

Surely the realizing of His perpetual abiding presence would make us live reverently, purely, lovingly–so as always to please and never to grieve Him.

Nothing in this world is more beautiful

Grace logo

Nothing in this world is more beautiful

(J.R. Miller)

Aย shipย is made to go in the water, and no matter how deep the sea nor how wild the tempest–all goes well as long as the water does not get into the ship. The problem of managing a ship, is not to keep the ship out of the water–but toย keep the water out of the ship!

In this sinful world, we cannot avoid allย caresย andย trialsย andย temptations.ย The goal of of true Christian living is to keep these cares and trials and temptations from getting into our souls. Some people let all their frets and worries at once into their hearts–and they soon live out their lives in sourness, irritability, and discontent. They become thus miserable themselves–and they make all around them miserable. They cast, not cooling, healthful, refreshing shade on others–but melancholy, darksome, chilling shadows.ย

Learn to keep your cares in your hands–and out of your hearts.ย Nothing in this world is more beautifulย than a Christian life with many trials and cares–yet remaining ever peaceful and joyous amid them all. This is the real goal of noble Christian living.

On whom do you trust?

Grace logo

On whom do you trust?

(Charles Spurgeon)ย

On whom do you trust?” Isaiah 36:5

Reader, this is an important question. Listen to the Christian’s answer, and see if it is yours.ย

“On whom do you trust?”

“I trust,” says the Christian, “in the triune God of Scripture!”

I trust theย Father, believing that He hasย chosenย me from before the foundation of the world. I trust Him toย provideย for me in His providence, toย teachย me, toย guideย me, toย correctย me if need be, and to bring me home to His own house where the many mansions are!

I trust theย Son. Theย manย Christ Jesus–is also the trueย God. I trust in Him as myย Redeemer–to take away all my sins by His atoning sacrifice, and to adorn me with His perfect righteousness. I trust Him to be myย Intercessor, to present my prayers and desires before His Father’s throne. I trust Him to be myย Advocateย at the last great day, to plead my cause, and to justify me. I trust Him . . .
ย  for what He is,
ย  for what He has done, and
ย  for what He has promised yet to do!

I trust theย Holy Spirit. He has begun to save me from my inbred sins; I trust Him to finally drive them all out. I trust Him . . .
ย  to curb my debased temperament,
ย  to subdue my stubborn will,
ย  to enlighten my darkened understanding,
ย  to check my evil passions,
ย  to comfort my despondency,
ย  to help my spiritual weakness,
ย  to provide my spiritual nourishment,ย
ย  to reign in me as my loving King,
ย  to sanctify me wholly, and then
ย  to take me up to dwell forever in glory!

Oh, blessed trust! To trust Him . . .
ย ย  whoseย powerย will never be exhausted,
ย ย  whoseย loveย will never wane,
ย ย  whoseย kindnessย will never change,
ย ย  whoseย faithfulnessย will never fail,
ย ย  whoseย wisdomย will never be confounded, and
ย ย  whoseย perfect goodnessย can never know a diminution!

Happy are you, reader, if this trust is yours! So trusting, you shall enjoy sweet peace now, and glory hereafter! The foundation of your trust shall never be removed!

You are greatly loved!

Grace logo

You are greatly loved!

“A man greatly loved by God.” Daniel 10:11ย

Child of God, do you hesitate to appropriate this title? Ah! has your unbelief made you forget that you are greatly loved by God?ย

Must you not have been greatly loved–to have been bought with the precious blood of Christ? When God smote His only begotten Son for you–what was this but being greatly loved by Him? You lived in sin and rioted in it–must you not have been greatly loved for God to have borne so patiently with you? You were called by grace and led to the Savior, and made a child of God and an heir ofย Heaven! All this proves, does it not–a very great and super-abounding love for you?ย

Since that time, whether your path has beenย rough with troubles, orย smooth with mercies–it has been full of proofs that you are greatly loved by God. If the Lord hasย chastenedย you–yet it was not in anger. If He has made youย poor–yet you have beenย maderich in grace. The more unworthy you feel yourself to be–the more evidence you have that nothing but unspeakable divine love could have led the Lord Jesus to save such a soul as yours! The more demerit you feel–the clearer is the display of the abounding love of God, in having chosen you, and called you, and made you an heir of everlasting bliss!

Now, if there is such great love from God to us–let us live in the influence and sweetness of it, and use the privilege of our exalted position as God’s redeemed children. Do not let us approach our Lord as though we wereย strangers, or as though He wereย unwillingย to hear us–for we are greatly cherished by our compassionate Father!

“He who spared not His own Son–but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” Come boldly, O believer, for despite the whisperings of Satan and the doubtings of your own heart–you are greatly loved!ย Meditate on the exceeding vastness and faithfulness of Christ’s matchless love to you!

“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully!”ย Ephesians 3:19ย

I would recommend all parents to get this kind of Bible

Grace logo

I would recommend all parents to get this kind of Bible

(J.R. Miller)

“Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path!” Psalm 119:105ย

In many houses you will see beautiful Bibles bound handsomely in morocco leather, with gilt edges, and full of bright pictures. I love to see a beautiful Bible in a home–especially if it is not kept too clean and unsoiled. But the most beautiful form in which a household Bible can be bound, is in the holy life of godly parents. There is no tinted, gold-edged paper so lovely–as the pages God gives us on which to write our daily record.ย

The precepts and lessons of the inspired Word sound very sweetly when read out of a richly-covered volume–but they sound far more sweetly, when the child can spell them out of the parent’s daily life.ย

It is well for a parent toย readย to his child from the inspired page about the beauty of holiness; but it is better still when the child canย seeย that beauty shining out transfigured in every feature of his parent’s character.ย

It is well for him toย readย of the patience, gentleness, meekness, forbearance, and love of Christ; but it is better when heย exemplifiesย all of these traits.ย

It is well for him toย teachย the child what the Bible says about lying, profanity, intemperance, and all sins; it is better when hisย lifeย proclaims all these lessons.

No family Bible is so well printed and bound, as the one that is printed on the heart, and bound up in the life of a godly parent.ย I would recommend all parents to get this kind of Bible–and to keep the dust off it always by constant use. This is the best kind for aย lampย to the children’s feet.

A beautiful Christian life is aย living epistleย written by the hand of God–which the youngest child can read before it has learned to spell out the shortest words of the language. It is a sermon that preaches Christ all day long–seven days in the week!

There is no heresy so dangerous to childhood–as heresies lived in the home!

In love He blessed us with all spiritual blessings!

Grace logo

In love He blessed us with all spiritual blessings!

(James Smith, “The Evening Sacrifice; Or, A Help to Devotion” 1859)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3

God’s love to us is infinite. He considers nothing too good or too great to confer upon His redeemed children. Having chosen us in His Son, that we may be holy and blameless before Him–in love He blessed us with all spiritual blessings. He gave us . . .
ย  grace in Jesus,
ย  grace before the foundation of the world,ย
ย  grace for all time,ย
ย  grace for all trials,
ย  grace to be given to us as our circumstances may require.ย

In going to the throne of grace, therefore–we simply go to receive what our heavenly Father has stored up in Jesus for us. What sweet encouragement is this! Well may the apostle say, “Therefore let us come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and findย graceย to help in time of need.”ย

Blessed Lord, we thank You, we praise You, we bless Your glorious name–that You have chosen us and put us into Christ, made provision for us in Christ, and will make us perfectly holy through Christ. Teach us to come with boldness and confidence to Your throne, that we may obtain for our use, all that You have treasured up for us in Jesus. O give us . . .
ย  moreย faithย in Christ,
ย  moreย humilityย when at your throne,
ย  moreย zealย for Your glory when in the world,ย
ย  moreย loveย to You and Your people; andย
teach us to eat, drink, dress, and do everything to Your glory!ย

O to be thoroughly Christ-like! O to reflect the glory of God on all around us! O to live and act as on the confines of eternity, as if always impressed with this fact,ย “I shall soon be in Heaven!”ย Gracious Savior, raise me above this world, fix my affections on Yourself, fill me with Your Spirit, and enable me to lie down tonight with the assurance that all spiritual blessings are mine!

Christian, think about this!

Grace logo

Christian, think about this!ย

(Richard Baxter)

“Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us!”ย Ephesians 5:2ย

Is it a small thing in your eyes to be loved by God–to be the son, the spouse, the beloved, the delight of the King of glory?

Christian, think about this!ย You will be eternally embraced in the arms of the love which was from everlasting, and will extend to everlasting–of the love which brought the Son of God’s love . . .ย
ย  from Heaven to earth,
ย  from earth to the cross,
ย  from the cross to the grave,
ย  from the grave to glory–
that love which was weary, hungry, tempted, scorned, scourged, buffeted, spat upon, crucified, pierced–which fasted, prayed, healed, wept, sweated, bled, died.ย That love will eternally embrace you!

“May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is! May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully!”ย Ephesians 3:18-19

It is your duty to assure him that he is not saved

Grace logo

It is your duty to assure him that he is not saved

(Charles Spurgeon)

“Not everyone whoย saysย to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ย will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but only he whoย does the willย of My Father who is in Heaven.” Matthew 7:21ย

“I will tell them plainly: I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!” Matthew 7:23ย

If a professed convert distinctly and deliberately declares that he knows the Lord’s will, but does not mean toย obeyย it–then you are not to pamper his presumption, butย it is your duty to assure him that he is not saved.ย

Do not suppose that the Gospel is magnified or God glorified, by going to religious worldlings and telling them that they are saved–while they are still wedded to their idols, and their hearts are still in love with sin. If I do so, I . . .
ย  tell them a lie,
ย  pervert the Gospel,
ย  insult Christ, and
ย  turn the grace of God into a license for sin!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

He is a bad preacher!

Grace logo

He is a bad preacher!

(Charles Spurgeon)ย

“Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.” Joel 1:3ย

In this simple way, by God’s grace, a living testimony for truth is always to be kept alive in the land. The beloved of the Lord are to hand down their witness for the gospel to their heirs, and these again to their next descendants.ย

This is ourย firstย duty–we are to begin at theย family hearth.ย He is a bad preacher, who does not commence his ministryย at home. The heathen are to be sought by all means, and the highways and hedges are to be searched–butย homeย has a prior claim, and woe unto those who reverse the order of the Lord’s arrangements.ย

To teach our children is aย personalย duty. We cannot delegate it to Sunday School Teachers, or to the church. These canย assistย us–but cannotย relieveย us from the sacred obligation. Mothers and fathers must, like Abraham, command their households in the fear of God, and talk with their offspring concerning the wondrous works of the Most High God.ย

Parental teaching is aย naturalย duty. Who is so fit to look to after child’s well-being, as those who are the authors of his actual being? To neglect the instruction of our offspring is worse than brutish!ย

Family instruction isย necessaryย for theย nation, for theย familyย itself, and for theย churchย of God. By a thousand plots, atheism is covertly advancing in our land, and one of the most effectual means for resisting its inroads is left almost neglected, namely, the instruction of children in the faith. Would that parentsย would awaken to a sense of the importance of this matter.ย

It is aย pleasantย duty to talk of Jesus to our sons and daughters, and the more so because it has often proved to be anย acceptedย work, for God has often saved the children through the parents’ prayers and admonitions.ย

May every house into which this counsel shall come, honor the Lord in this matter and receive His smile!

“These commandments that I give to you today are to be upon your hearts.ย Impress them on your children.ย Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates!”ย Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in theย trainingย andย instructionย of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4ย

Christian Love Part 1 Of 4 By J. C. Ryle

Grace logo

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But theย greatestย of these is love!” 1 Corinthians 13:13

“The end of the commandment is love.” 1 Timothy 1:5ย

Love is rightly called “the Queen of Christian graces.” It is a grace which all people profess to admire. It seems a plain practical thing which everybody can understand. It is none of “those troublesome doctrinal points” about which Christians are disagreed. Thousands, I suspect, would not be ashamed to tell you that they knew nothing about justification or regeneration, about the work of Christ or the Holy Spirit. But nobody, I believe, would like to say that he knew nothing about “love!” If men possess nothing else in religion, they always flatter themselves that they possess “love.”

A fewย plain thoughtsย about love may not be without use. There areย false notionsย abroad about it which require to be dispelled. There areย mistakesย about it which require to be rectified. In my admiration of love, I yield to none. But I am bold to say that in many minds, the whole subject seems completely misunderstood.

I. Let me show, firstly, the place which the Bible gives to love.

II. Let me show, secondly, what the love of the Bible really is.

III. Let me show, thirdly, where true love comes from.

IV. Let me show, lastly, why love is “the greatest” of the graces.

I ask the best attention of my readers to the subject. My heart’s desire and prayer to God is, that the growth of love may be promoted in this sin-burdened world. In nothing does the fallen condition of man show itself so strongly, as in theย scarcity of Christian love. There is littleย faithย on earth, littleย hope, littleย knowledgeย of Divine things. But nothing, after all, is soย scarceย as real love!
ย

I. Let me show the PLACE which the Bible gives to love.

I begin with this point in order to establish theย immense practical importanceย of my subject. I do not forget that there are many high-flying Christians in this present day, who almost refuse to look at anythingย practicalย in Christianity. They can talk of nothing but two or three favorite doctrines. Now I want to remind my readers that the Bible contains much aboutย practiceย as well as aboutย doctrine, and that one thing to which it attaches great weight, is “love.”

I turn to the New Testament, and ask men to observe what it says about love. In all religious inquiries there is nothing like letting the Scripture speak for itself. There is no surer way of finding out truth, than the old way ofย turning to plain texts. Texts were our Lord’sย weapons, both in answering Satan, and in arguing with the Jews. Texts are theย guidesย we must never be ashamed to refer to in the present day. “What do the Scriptures say? What is written? How do you read?”

Let us hear what Paul says to the Corinthians: “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love–I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love–I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love–I gain nothing!” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3ย

Let us hear what Paul says to the Colossians: “Above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.” (Colossians 3:14.)

Let us hear what Paul says to Timothy: “The end of the commandment is love out of a pure heart” (1 Timothy 1:5.)

Let us hear what Peter says: “Above all things, have fervent love among yourselves: for love shall cover the multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8.)

Let us hear what our Lord Jesus Christ Himself says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34, 35.)ย

Above all, let us read our Lord’s account of the last judgment, and mark that lack of love will condemn millions. “Then He will say to those on the left: Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels! For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; I was naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not take care of Me.” (Matthew 25:41-43.)

Let us hear what Paul says to the Romans: “Owe no man anything–but to love another: for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:9.)

Let us hear what Paul says to the Ephesians: “Walk is love, as Christ also has loved us.” (Ephesians 5:2.)

Let us hear what John says: “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7, 8.)

I shall makeย no commentย upon these texts. I think it better to place them before my readers in theirย naked simplicity, and to let them speak for themselves. If anyone is disposed to think the subject of this paper a matter of light importance, I will only ask him to look at these texts, and to think again. He who would take down “love” from the high and holy place which it occupies in the Bible, and treat it as a matter ofย secondaryย consequence, must settle his account with God’s Word. I certainly shall not waste time in arguing with him.

To my own mind, the evidence of these texts appears clear, plain, and incontrovertible. They show theย immense importanceย of love, as one of the “things that accompany salvation.” They prove that it has a right to demand the serious attention of all who call themselves Christians, and that those who despise the subject are only exposing their own ignorance of Scripture.

โ‡ง Sarah & i โ‡งย

Each time our wedding anniversary comes round, i canโ€™t believe how much our marriage has grown more and more fruitful. Our love keeps blossoming through every season and i thank God for Sarah.!

My heart overflows with love for her, she encourages, inspires and loves me in spite of all my faults, She is the sunshine that warms me along my journey. I really donโ€™t have enough words to fully express how blessed i am to have my best friend as my wife to cherish and share every moment of this amazing life.

This is the chorus for the song i wrote for Sarahโ€ฆ.

Youโ€™re the love I thought Iโ€™d never find,
Your smile is like the warm sunshine,
As our souls, slowly entwine!
You light the heavens in my mind!

Godโ€™s Wordโ€ฆ..

Husbands, you must love your wives so deeply, purely, and sacrificially that we can understand it only when we compare it to the love that Jesus Christ has for His bride, the church..

โ€œYour love delights me, my treasure, my bride. Your love is better than wine, your perfume more fragrant than spices.โ€ โ€”Song of Solomon 4:10

โ€œKiss me and kiss me again, for your love is sweeter than wine.โ€ โ€”Song of Solomon 1:2

โ€œYou have captured my heart, my treasure, my bride. You hold it hostage with one glance of your eyes, with a single jewel of your necklace.โ€ โ€”Song of Solomon 4:9

โ€œLove is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never failsโ€ฆโ€ โ€”1 Corinthians 13:4โ€“8

I thank God for sustaining our marriage in Purity and Truth. Andย look forwards to more of this Brobdingnagian adventure!

Pride cannot live beneath the cross!

Pride cannot live beneath the cross!

(Charles Spurgeon)ย

“He humbled Himself.” Philippians 2:8ย

Jesus is the great teacher ofย lowliness of heart. We need daily to learn of Him.ย

See the Master taking a basin and towel to wash His disciples feet!ย
Follower of Christ, will you not humble yourself?
See Him asย the Servant of servants–and surely you cannot be proud!ย

Surely this sentence is theย compendium of His biography: “He humbled Himself!”ย

While on earth, He was always stripping off first one robe of honor and then another–until He was fastened to the bloody tree. And there He emptied out His inmost self, pouring out His life-blood, giving upย His allย for us–until they laid Him penniless in a borrowed grave!

How low was our dear Redeemer brought!ย How then can we be proud?ย

Stand at the foot of the cruel cross, and count theย purple dropsย by which you have been cleansed of your infinite sins! See the thorn-crown; mark His scourged shoulders, still gushing with encrimsoned rills. See His hands and feet given up to the rough iron, and His whole self to mockery and scorn. See the bitterness, and the pangs, and the throes of inward grief, showing themselves in His outward frame. Hear the horrid shriek:ย “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me!”ย

If you do not lie prostrate on the ground before that cross–you have never seen it!ย
If you are not humbled in the presence of the dying Jesus–you do not know Him.ย

You wereย so lostย that nothing could save you–but the sacrifice of God’s only begotten Son.ย
Think of that, and as Jesus stooped for you–bow yourself in lowliness at His feet.ย

A senseย of Christ’s amazing love to us–has a greater tendency to humble us than even a consciousness of our own guilt!ย

May the Lord bring us in contemplation, to Calvary–and then we will no longer think of ourselves with pompous pride. We shall then take the humble place of one who loves much, because much has been forgiven.ย Pride cannot live beneath the cross!ย Let us sit there and learn our lesson–and then rise and carry it into practice.

One blessing after another!

One blessing after another!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“From the fullness of His grace we have all receivedย one blessing after another!ย John 1:16ย

Our Lord Jesus is ever giving–and does not for a solitary instant withdraw His hand.ย
As long as there is a vessel of grace not yet full to the brim–the oil shall not be stopped.ย

He is a sun ever-shining.ย
He is manna always falling round the camp.ย
He is a rock in the desert, ever sending out streams of life from His smitten side.ย
The rain of His grace is always dropping.ย
The river of His bounty is ever-flowing.ย
The well-spring of His love is constantly overflowing.ย

As our King can never die–so His grace can never fail.ย

Daily we pluck His fruit, and daily His branches bend down to our hand with aย fresh store of mercy.ย

Who has ever returned from His door, unblessed?
Who has ever risen from His table, unsatisfied?ย
Who has ever come from His bosom, un-imparadised?ย
His mercies are new every morning–and fresh every evening.ย

Who can know the number of His benefits, or recount His infinite bounties?ย

Every sand which drops from the glass of time–is but the tardy follower of a myriad of mercies. The wings of our hours are covered with the silver of His kindness, and with the yellow gold of His affection. Theย river of timeย bears from theย mountains of eternity–theย golden sands of His favor.ย

Who can count theย dust of the benefitsย which He bestows on His redeemed people, or number of His mercies towards us? How shall my soul extol Him–who daily loads us with benefits, and who crowns us with loving-kindness?ย

O that myย praiseย could be as ceaseless as Hisย bounty!ย O miserable tongue, how can you be silent?ย

“Praise the Lord, O my soul!ย Do not forget all ofย Hisย benefits!”ย Psalm 103:2ย

Let us beware of the love of money!ย

(J.C. Ryle)

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21ย

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God!” Mark 10:25ย

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:10ย

Let us beware of the love of money!ย It is possible to use money well, and do good with it. But for each one who makes a right use of money, there are thousands who make a wrong use of it, and do harm both to themselves and others.ย

Let the worldly man, if he will, make an idol of money, and count him happiest who has most of it.ย

But let the Christian, who professes to have “treasure in Heaven,” set his face like a flint against the spirit of the world in this matter. Let him not worship gold. He is not the best man in God’s eyes who has most money, but he who has most grace and likeness to Jesus.

“Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.” Proverbs 30:8ย

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said: Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5ย

The more I see of Jesus

(Mary Winslow)

“My ears hadย heardย of You, but now my eyes haveย seenย You! Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:5-6ย

The more I see of Jesus, the more He opens to me His loving heart–the deeper is my sorrow for sin. I lie down in the dust at His feet closer than ever I did before. I can truly say I abhor myself in dust and ashes before Him. My heart seems ready to melt into contrition in view of the ten thousand thousand sins, willful and aggravating–that I have committed against Him who loved me with an everlasting love, and with loving kindness drew me to Himself.ย

So eternal and deep, so sovereign and boundless is the love of Jesus, that angels cannot fathom it! He is nothing but sincere, constant, and unabating love–to the weakest, the most unworthy of all His little flock.ย

I feel such a weariness of this world that nothing here gives me anything more than a momentary, passing pleasure–and it is gone at a glance.

Oh, to have such a Friend as Jesus, who feels all our sorrows, carries all our burdens, and has promised to bring us safely through this trying world, and place us at last at His own right hand, where neither sickness nor sorrow shall ever come!

Oh for Heaven! Nothing else will satisfy my longing soul, but the sight of Him it loves.

Jesus is all in all to me, and He will be all in all through eternity!

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name!ย

The object of God’s tender, perfect and ceaseless care!

The object of God’s tender, perfect and ceaseless care!

(James Smith, “Divine Care!” 1865)

“Casting all your care upon Him–forย He cares for you!”ย 1 Peter 5:7

Ourย caresย must be cast upon our God, or they will prove a burden too heavy for us–they will depress, bewilder, and make us wretched!ย

WHO is it that cares for us?ย

It is theย Lord Almighty–the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy!ย
It is He whom the angels obey, the seraphim adore, and all creation glorifies!ย
It is the Lord–who is soย great, that we have no adequate conception of His greatness!ย
It is He who is soย good–that it is impossible fully to set forth His goodness!ย
It is He who is soย glorious–that no sinner can see His face and live!ย
It is He whoย createdย all things with His Word!
It is He whoย governsย all things by His wisdom!
It is He whoย upholdsย all things by His power!ย
It is He whoseย resourcesย are infinite!
It is He whoseย compassionย is exquisite!
It is He whoseย patienceย is without limit!ย

But though He is so exalted, so happy, and so unspeakably great–He cares for you!

He cares for you–as base as you are.ย
He cares for you–as sinful as you are.ย
He cares for you–as depressed and discouraged as you are.ย

HE cares for YOU!

May I pass through the present world under the impression, “I amย the object of God’s tender, perfect and ceaseless care!

“Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.” Psalm 55:22ย

Do not pay too dear for a feast for worms!

Do not pay too dear for a feast for worms!

(Richard Baxter, “Directions against Gluttony“)

“Dust you are, and to dust you will return!” Genesis 3:19ย

“Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.” Job 21:26ย

“When You take away their breath, they die and return to the dust!” Psalm 104:29ย

“All come from dust, and to dust all return!” Ecclesiastes 3:20ย

Remember what your body is, and what it will shortly be, and how loathsome and vile it will be in the grave. And then think how far such a body should be pampered and pleased–and at what a price.ย Do not pay too dear for a feast for worms!ย Look into the grave, and see what the end of all of all your pleasant foods and drinks is; of all your dainty and costly fare. You may see there the skulls cast up, and the ugly hole of that mouth which devoured so many sweet, delicious morsels–but there is none of the pleasure of it now left!

Oh astonishing folly! that men can so easily, so eagerly, so obstinately, waste their estates, and neglect their souls, and displease their God, and in effect even sell their hopes of Heaven–for so small and sordid a delight, as the pleasing of such a piece of flesh, which must shortly have so vile an end!

Was it worth so much care, and toil, and cost, and the casting away of your salvation–to pamper that body a little while, which must shortly be such a loathsome carcass? Methinks one sight of a skull or a grave, would make you look upon gluttony and luxury as madness.

The case will be altered with you when all your wealth and friends cannot keep your pampered carcass from corruption, nor procure your soul a comfort equal to a drop of water to cool your tongue, tormented in the flames of God’s displeasure! Then all the comfort you can procure from God and conscience will be but this sad memento, “Remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony!” Luke 16:25ย

Our clumsy hands!

Our clumsy hands!

(J.R. Miller)

“I do not practice what I want to do–but I do what I hate!” Romans 7:15ย

Think of the brokenness, the incompleteness, the littleness–of these lives of ours!ย

We getย glimpsesย of beauty in character–which we are not able to attain!ย
We have spiritualย longings–which seem to us too great ever to come true.ย
Weย dreamย of things we want to do–but when we try to work them out,ย our clumsy handsย cannot put them into realizations!ย

We have glimmerings of aย loveย that is very rich and tender, without a trace of selfishness, without envy or jealousy, without resentment–a love which does not seek its own, nor is not provoked, and bears all things. We get the vision from the life of Christ Himself. We say, “I will learn that lesson of love–I will be like that!”ย But we fail.

We strive to be sweet-spirited, unselfish, thoughtful, kind–but we must wet our pillow with tears at the close ofย our marred days, because we cannot be what we strive to be! We have glimpses of an inner peace which is very beautiful. We strive after it strive with intense effort–but do not reach it!

So it is in all our living. Life is ever something too large for us. We attain onlyย fragmentsย of living. Yet take heart, “Theย desireย of the righteous shall be granted!” Proverbs 10:24

“We know that when He appears–we shall be like Him!” 1 John 3:2

For a rational man to be so attached to a bubble, is a most irrational thing!

Grace logo

For a rational man to be so attached to a bubble, is a most irrational thing!

(Don Fortner)

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15ย

Worldliness is an undue attachment to this world. It is living for this world–its riches, its honor, its joys and its cares. It is living by theย principlesย of this world: greed, covetousness, deceit and lust.

Nothing is more dangerous to the souls of men–than the love of the world.ย
Nothing more effectually chokes out the influence of the gospel in a man’s heart–than the cares of this world.ย
Nothing is more difficult to avoid–than an undue attachment to this world.ย

Therefore, John sets these four words up as a beacon. They stand in blazing letters to warn us of great danger: “LOVE NOT THE WORLD!”

Beloved, this world and all that it offers, is no more than aย bubbleย that soon must burst! Your money, your farms, your houses, your influence, your families–everything here is temporary. It will all vanish away!ย

We laugh at the small child who cries when the bubbles he is playing with burst. But,ย for a rational man to be so attached to a bubble, is a most irrational thing!

What fools they are who love and seek this world! I cannot warn you enough of the danger of worldliness–of loving, seeking, and living for this world!

Are you God’s child? Are you risen with Christ? Do you live in the hope of eternal glory?ย

Then count this world to be a dead thing.ย
Live no longer for this world.ย
Set your heart on things above.ย
Live above this pile of rubbish that must soon burn.ย
Live to do the will of God, seek the glory of Christ, further the gospel of the grace of God, and serve the people of God. Quit seeking those things for which unbelieving men live, and seek those things which are above–life, immortality, and glory.

Later you will understand

(Charles Naylor, “When Adversity Comes” 1944)

“You do not realizeย nowย what I am doing, butย later you will understand.” John 13:7ย

A few years ago a young preacher came to me and told me his troubles. He was passing through a time of darkness that he could not understand. Several months ago he called upon me again, and in the course of our conversation he referred to the time of trouble through which he had passed. He said, “Those things that I could not understand at that time, have taught me lessons which have prepared me to help many souls as I never could have, had I not had those severe trials.”ย

Yes, things look different now.ย He can now see God’s hand in it. He can see that those difficult things were a blessing to his own soul and to the souls of others. He can see that he had been inย God’s school of adversityย and knew it not. He thought these things were destructive to him, but when he looked back upon them with clear vision and a knowledge of God’s purpose–he saw real blessing in them. He saw them as manifestations of the wisdom and kindness of God, and he thanked God for those things which had been bitter and hard to bear.

Are you passing through difficult things which you cannot now understand?ย

Does it look as if these things are ruining you?ย

Just trust God and be patient. Out of yourย night of bitterness, out of your darkness and woe–will come strength of character, a blessed realization of God’s faithfulness, and a knowledge of Him and yourself which can come to you in no other way. You will look back in time to come, and thank God for His wise care and tender love for you which brought you to these things, and realize that it was His hand leading you to better and richer things beyond.

“What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked.ย
They shouted back,ย “Crucify Him!”ย Matthew 27:22ย

Oh, what a revelation of man the cross is!ย
Man hating God, and hating Him most when God displayed His love most fully.ย
Man acting like the devil, taking Satan’s side against God!ย

Yes, the cross was a public declaration of man’s hatred for God and His Son.ย

The cross is proud man spitting in God’s face and saying, “I am holy. I need no Savior. To Hell with God and His Son!”ย

Our Savior asked,ย “What do you think you of Christ?”ย
Man’s answer was,ย “Crucify Him!”ย

Man’s heart, his hands, his tongue all combine to scream out hatred for God and His Son.ย

Calvary’s hill displays man’s utter hatred for God!

How deep, bitter, universal, and vile is the hatred of the human heart for God! Oh, how fallen man hates God!ย

The arrest, the scourging, the mockery, the spitting, the smiting, the cries, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”, the wagging the heads, the cruel nails, the thieves’ railing–everything was butย the outpouring of man’s utter hatred for God.ย

Here we see what is in every human heart by nature!

Man declared his heart, in the crucifixion of God’s darling Son.

God seems to have said, “Vent the feelings of your heart.” And he did, taking God by the throat, as it were, man snatched the only begotten Son from His Father’s heart and crucified Him with hellish delight.

Reckoning the death of the cross the worst of all deaths, man said, “This is the best way to show my contempt for God. This is exactly what I think of the Son of God!” Thus, the enmity of the natural heart speaks out, and man not only confesses publicly that he is a hater of God, but he takes pains to show the intensity of his hatred.ย

The cross interprets what is in man’s heart.ย

The cross rips theย mask of pretended religionย off of the face of our race.ย

The cross of Christ exhibits man’s heart as a cesspool overflowing with the malignity of Hell.ย

The chastenings of the Lordย often appear severe–but they areย merciful. They . . .

When Godย chastens–Heย teaches. Theย lessonsย are found in His Word–but we never learn many of them, until we go through theย furnace of affliction!ย We often learn more truth from one short, sharp affliction–than we do from many books and sermons!

Weย needย chastening. If we do not receive it–we become . . .
ย  carnal and worldly,
ย  light and trifling,
ย  unsavory and useless in both the world and the church!ย

It is aย blessedย thing to be chastened of the Lord, especially when theย rodย teaches us such important and invaluable lessons! Chastened Christians are generally the most useful and attractive Christians.ย

“As the Father has loved Me–so have I loved you!” John 15:9ย

Believer, you have a home in the heart of Jesus!ย What a pavilion of comfort is this–the love of Christ! To know that the affections of Jesus embrace and entwine around us, to be assured that He loves us each one as though we were the only one whom He loved–what a privilege and a bliss!

And yet so it is, Jesus loves you, cares for you, watches over and sympathizes with you–as if you were the only one whom He loved. “He lovedย me–and gave Himself forย me!” Seek this individual consciousness of Christ’s love, and you will be supremely happy!

O for a spirit of habitual prayer!

O for a spirit of habitual prayer!

(James Smith, “The Evening Sacrifice; Or, A Help to Devotion” 1859)

“But I call to God, and the LORD saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress–and He hears my voice!” Psalm 55:16-17ย

The well taught Christian carries everything to God–and in so doing, obtains relief, enjoys peace, and grows in grace.ย
For all that weย need–we should call upon God.ย
And from all that weย fear–we should flee unto God.ย

At theย closeย of every day, it is our mercy to call upon the Lord.
We must make confession of sin–and obtain pardon.ย
We must carry to Him our burdens–and obtain relief.ย
We must tell out before Him our needs–and obtain a supply.

Oh, how precious it is to go to the Lord at theย closeย of each day, and tell Him all that has . . .
ย  vexed us,
ย  grieved us,
ย  cast us down, or
ย  disquieted our spirits!ย

And how blessed to go to him eachย morning, and seek grace to live holily and happily through the day!ย

Nor is it less blessed to have a few minutes with God atย noon–breaking, as it were, the day in two, and keeping short accounts with God.ย

O for a spirit of habitual prayer
, that at evening, and at morning, and at noon–we may pray, and cry aloud to God!ย

If we were more with the Lord in prayer, we would have . . .
ย  moreย strengthย to carry our crosses,
ย  moreย patienceย to bear our troubles,
ย  and moreย comfortย amidst life’s sorrows.ย

Holy Spirit, take up your residence in my heart as a Spirit of prayer, and lead me daily, hourly, yes, very often–to the mercy-seat. Let me find the hours of prayer to be precious seasons. And especially at eventide, when worn and exhausted with the toils and troubles of the day–let me find sweet solace and refreshment in pouring out my soul unto God.ย

Precious Lord Jesus, draw our souls to You evening by evening, and lead us into the presence of Your Father, that we may have sweet and hallowed fellowship with God! Let our devotions ascend as sweet incense to God.

“The Son of God, who lovedย meย and gave Himselfย for me!” Galatians 2:20ย

Is Jesus precious to my heart?

Is He the object of my supreme admiration and delight?

Does He have my warmest affection?

Do I love Jesus above all?

I must light the torch of my affection for Christ–atย the altar of Calvary. I must go there, and learn and believe what the love of Jesus is to me–theย vastnessย of that love–theย selfsacrificeย of that love–how that love of Jesus . . .
ย ย laboredย for me,ย
ย  andย weptย for me,ย
ย  andย bledย for me,ย
ย  andย sufferedย for me,ย
ย  andย diedย for me!ย

Can I stand before this love–this love . . .
ย  so precious,ย
ย  so great,ย
ย  so enduring,ย
ย  so self-consuming,ย
ย  so changeless–and know thatย . . .
ย  ย  His sin-atoning sacrifice was for me,

ย ย ย  His agony was for me,
ย ย ย  His scorn and insult was for me,
ย ย ย  His death was for me–
and feel no sensibility, no emotion, no love to Jesus? Impossible!ย

Do not be cast down, then, in vain regrets that your love to Christ is so frigid, so fickle, so dubious. Go and muse upon the reality and the greatness ofย the Savior’s love to you–and if love can inspire love–while you muse, the fire will burn, and your soul shall be all in flame with love to Jesus!

Christian liberty

Grace logoChristian liberty

(J.R. Miller)

We should keep watch over our words and deeds, not only in their intent and purpose โ€” but also inย their possible influence over others. There may beย libertiesย which lead to no danger for us โ€” but which to others with less stable character, and less wholesome environments โ€” would be full of peril. It is part of our duty to think of theseย weakerย ones, and of the influence of our example upon them. We may not do anything in our liberty, which might possiblyย harmย others. We must be willing to sacrifice our liberty โ€” if by its exercise, we endanger another’s soul. This is the teaching of holy Scripture:

“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one mayย edifyย another.” Romans 14:19ย

“Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else toย stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.” Romans 14:20-21ย

“Be careful, however, that theย exercise of your freedomย does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, won’t he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound theirย weak conscience โ€”ย you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.” 1 Corinthians 8:9-13ย

“All things areย lawfulย for me, but not all things areย helpful;ย all things are lawful for me, but not all thingsย edify. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.” 1 Corinthians 10:23-24

The master-key which fits the locks!

Grace logo

The master-key which fits the locks!

(Susannah Spurgeon,ย “Words of Cheer and Comfort for Sick and Sorrowful Souls!”ย 1898)

“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; butย because the LORD loved you!” Deuteronomy 7:7-8ย

My gracious God, there is aย honeycomb of delight and sweetnessย in these words! Will You put theย rod of faithย into my hand, this morning, and enable me to dip the end thereof into this rich provision, that my soul may eat and be satisfied, and that the eyes of my understanding may be enlightened?

“Because the Lord loved you!”ย
This is His great “reason” for all of God’s dealings with His redeemed people. It is a full and convincing answer to all the doubts and questionings with which Satan can perplex and distress the Lord’s timid ones. The enemy of souls has, alas! a powerful confederate in the wicked unbelief which lurks within us; but they will both be vanquished when we have learned to use this weapon of war against them.

Come, my heart, try its blessed force and quality at this moment! The foe says, “Why does God send you affliction, and sorrow, and suffering โ€” when those who do not fear His Name have continual quietness and abounding prosperity?”

If you can boldly answer,ย “It is because the Lord loves me!”ย then you will have given him such aย sword-thrustย as will free you, for a time, at least, from his cunning devices and fierce onslaughts.

Or, look at the text as aย shaft of sunlight, piercing through a chink in the shuttered window of some dark experience. Bring your fears and forebodings out of their dusky corners, and place them within the radiance of this light of love โ€” you will be amazed to see them transformed into confident trusts โ€” your doubts will vanish as if they had never been, and the evil and bitter things of life will all be transformed into blessings in a moment.ย

“Because the Lord loved you!”ย isย the master-key which fits the locksย of the hardest question, and opens the mysteries of the deepest problem! It is aย charmย of wondrous efficacy, and every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ may not only rejoice in its possession โ€” but use it constantly to obtain all the desire of his heart in spiritual things.

What ails you, poor soul?
ย Is it loss of health, or friends, or means? Has God taken from you some dearly-loved one, and left you alone on this sad earth? Is He trying and proving you, by many and varied tests and troubles, “to know what was in your heart”? Whatever may be your immediate and peculiar sorrow, if you have grace and faith enough to say,ย “This is because the Lord loves me!”ย โ€” then I dare to promise you that all the bitterness of the affliction will melt away โ€” and theย peace of Godย will fill you with a sweet contentment which surpasses understanding. No distress can withstand such Divine solace, no anguish can refuse the relief of thisย balm of Gilead. If all that happens to you can be traced directly or indirectly to the hand of your loving Lord โ€” then how gladly should you bear life’s burdens, and how perfect should be the rest in which heart and mind should dwell!

O gracious Master, looking back over the years that are gone โ€” the interminglings of grief and gladness, pass before my eyes as the clouds sail by on an April day. And though the memories ofย great afflictionย andย sore bereavementย cast deep shadows across the scene, and seem for a time to blot out all the brightness โ€” yet, above and beyond those changeful skies โ€” the sun has never ceased shining, and darkness as well as day has proclaimed theย immutability of Your love. When the ears of my soul are attuned to catch the soft whisper of Your voice, I hear You saying: “All this, My child, was because I loved you! Left to yourself; you would have destroyed yourself; but in Me was your help found. All theย tribulationsย you have endured, were butย My servantsย to whom I entrusted the necessary discipline of your earthly life. Do not forget those words of Mine:ย As many as I love โ€” I rebuke and chasten!”

Soul-Comfort

Soul-Comfort

(Susannah Spurgeon,ย “Words of Cheer and Comfort for Sick and Sorrowful Souls!”ย 1898)

“When my anxious thoughts multiply within me โ€” Your comforts delight my soul.” Psalm 94:19ย

“Your comforts delight my soul!” Blessed Lord, how sweet is this text in my mouth! The taste of it is “like wafers made with honey.” It is both food and drink to my heart, for every word has joy and refreshing in it; so that, like the “best wine” of the Canticles, it “goes down sweetly.”ย

The first of Your comforts, gracious God, is this โ€” that You have said unto my soul, “I am your salvation!” Heย savesย us, not because of any merit in us, or any deservings of our own; but because sovereign graceย choseย us, and Divine compassionย redeemedย us. And when we were afar off, infinite pity brought us back, and made us near by the precious blood of Christ. This may well comfort our hearts โ€” coming as it does directly from “our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace!” A saved and pardoned sinner can truly say,ย “Your comforts delight my soul!”

The next thought is that, havingย savedย us โ€” Heย keepsย us. “We are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.” Comparatively few Christians putย God’s keeping powerย fully to the test. If we would trust Him for theย keeping, as we do for theย savingย โ€” our lives would be far holier and happier than they are. “I will keep it every moment,” is one of those grandly unlimited promises which most of us are afraid of; and we store them away in the background because we dare not believe them, and bring them out into the light of ourย daily practice.ย O foolish and unbelieving hearts, how much of soul-delighting comfort do we thus miss!

Then comes another thought โ€” Heย caresย for us. Dear friends, if you are His, you know the exceeding comfort ofย casting all your care upon Himย โ€” and being quite sure that He will “undertake” for you. Have we not often come to Him oppressed and burdened with anย intolerable weight of anxiety and distressย โ€” and been enabled to roll the whole mass of it on Him, leaving it all at His feet, and returning to our work with a lightened and restful heart? Some of us have had burdens and sorrows, which would have crushed the very life out of us โ€” if we had not been enabled to look up and say, “You, O Lord, have helped and comforted me!” Yes, truly, God’s care for us is one of the sweetest comforts of our mortal life!

Closely linked with this, is the thought that Heย knowsย all about us. Our enemies โ€” sometimes, even our friends โ€” misunderstand and malign us; they misconstrue our words and actions, and impute to us motives which never actuated us. But our God knows theย thoughtsย andย intentsย of our heart, and never makes a mistake in the judgment He passes on us. The comfort of this knowledge on the Lord’s part, to those who are “suffering wrongfully,” is inexpressibly precious. They can lift up their heads with joy, and say, “The Lord is good. He knows those who trust in Him.” I have known this comfort to so delight my soul, that trials and temptations had no power to vex or annoy it, for my soul was hidden “secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.”

Lastly (though there are many, many more), one of the multitude of thoughts which stand out prominently from the rest, as a comfort which delights the soul โ€” is that Heย lovesย us. This truth has been running through the fields of previous thought, as a silver streamlet glides through the meadows โ€” here, it would deepen and expand to a broad and fathomless ocean, had I the power to speak of its height, and depth, and length, and breadth, and to tell of the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge! But my pen utterly fails here. You who love Him, and know that He loves you โ€” must each one say to himself what that “comfort of His love” is to your own heart. This will be a better commentary than any I can offer.ย

And, if some poor distressed soul is mourning the loss of the sweet consolation which Christ’s love alone can give โ€” let him call to remembrance a tenderly precious promise which the Lord put into the lips of the prophet Isaiah, “I have seen his ways โ€” but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him!” Isaiah 57:18ย

Our thorn!

Our thorn!

(J. R. Miller, “The Blossoming of Our Thorns” 1905)

“To keep me from getting puffed up, I wasย givenย aย thornย in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from getting proud.” 2 Corinthians 12:7

We do not know how much of Paul’s rich, beautiful life, and his noble work for his Master โ€” he owed toย his thorn. Just so, we do not know how much we are indebted to ourย sufferingsย andย sorrows. Our richest lessons โ€” are the fruit of pain, of weakness, of sorrow.

There is not one of us who has not his own thorn. With one it may be a bodily infirmity or weakness. With another it is some disfigurement which cannot be removed. It may be some difficulty in circumstances, something which makes it hard to live beautifully.ย

The Master told Paul that his thorn wasย necessaryย to him โ€” to save him from becoming proud. We may think ofย our thorn, too โ€” as something weย need. Instead of allowing it to irritate us or to spoil our life โ€” its mission is to make us sweet, patient, loving. Many people beseech the Lord to take away their thorn. Yet it may be, that the prayerย isย not answered,ย willย not be answered,ย shouldย not be answered. It may be, that the thorn isย necessaryย to keep them humble at God’s feet.

God sends some of our best blessings to us inย our thorns, and it will be a sad thing if we thrust them away and miss them.

The time has come for my departure!

(James Smith, “The Better Land”)

The time has come for my departure!ย I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day!” 2 Timothy 4:6-8ย

Agedย believer, the time of yourย departureย will soon come! Do not let your mind be troubled as to . . .
ย ย whereย you shall die,
ย ย whenย you shall die,
ย  orย howย you shall die!
These are all minor matters โ€” and ought not to affect you.ย

Simply look atย deathย as Jesus did: “Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world โ€” andย go to His Father!”ย John 13:1ย

Why should you regret to leave a poor world like this โ€” where sin, sorrow, pain, grief, disappointment, and anxiety meet you at every turn? Why should you be reluctant to go HOME โ€” to go to your Father?ย
Do you not want to see His face?ย
Do you not want to enjoy His company?ย
Do you not want to be perfectly happy in His presence?

I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far!” Philippians 1:23ย

He willย sustainย you!

(J.R. Miller)

“Cast your burden upon the Lord โ€” andย He willย sustainย you.” Psalm 55:22

The promise is not that the Lord willย removeย the load we cast upon Him, nor that He willย carryย it for us โ€” but that He willย sustainย us so thatย weย may carry it.
He does notย freeย us from the duty โ€” but Heย strengthensย us for it.
He does notย deliverย us from the conflict โ€” but He enables us toย overcome.ย
He does not withhold or withdraw the trial from us โ€” but He helps us in trial to be submissive and victorious, and makes it a blessing to us.ย
He does not mitigate the hardness or severity of our circumstances, taking away the difficult elements, removing the thorns, making lifeย easyย for us โ€” but He puts Divine grace into our hearts, so that we can live sweetly in all the hard, adverse circumstances.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9ย

This city was a moral cesspool, a sink of pollution, filled with all corruption, and reeking with vileness!

This city was a moral cesspool, a sink of pollution, filled with all corruption, and reeking with vileness!

(Charles Naylor, “In Christ, and in Ephesus” 1920)

To theย saintsย in Ephesus โ€” theย faithfulย in Christ Jesus”ย Ephesians 1:1ย

Ephesus was one of the great centers of paganism. It was adorned with costly and magnificent heathen temples. It was rich and voluptuous. Both private and public life were utterly corrupt. Even the religious practices of the Ephesians were unspeakably vile.ย This city was a moral cesspool, a sink of pollution, filled with all corruption, and reeking with vileness!ย It was a second Sodom. Vice stalked abroad everywhere โ€” and was honored and worshiped.

We might therefore well say, “Can any good thing come out of Ephesus? Can Christianity flourish in such surroundings?”ย

Yes! There wereย saintsย in Ephesus โ€” andย faithfulย ones, too. They were such in their lives and characters as to win the commendation of that great apostle to the Gentiles. Out of that obnoxious cesspool of iniquity, were growing the pure white lilies of Christian character! That is the glory of Christianity and of Christ. Those who were now Christians were not superior to the other Ephesians โ€” they were not by nature different. In fact, Paul tells them that they had been the children of wrath, even as the others โ€” and that they had been such by nature. What a triumph of divine grace, which raised these people up out of such unspeakable filth โ€” and made themย faithful saints!ย And yet that is the power of our great Christ!

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” Ephesians 5:8

The religion of JOY

Grace logo

The religion of JOYย
(Octavius Winslow, “The Sympathy of Christ”)ย
The religion of Christ is the religion of JOY. Christ came to take away our sins, to roll off our curse, to unbind our chains, to open our prison house, to cancel our debt; in a word, to give us the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Isย  not this joy? Where can we find a joy so real, so deep, so pure, so lasting? There is every element of joy; deep, ecstatic, satisfying, sanctifying joy in the gospel of Christ. The believer in Jesus is essentially a happy man. The child of God is, from necessity, a joyful man. His sins are forgiven, his soul is justified, his person is adopted, his trials are blessings, his conflicts are victories, his death is immortality, his future is a heaven of inconceivable, unthought of, untold, and endless blessedness. With such a God, such a Savior, and such a hope, is he not, ought he not, to be a joyful man?ย

Giddily gliding along the broad road that leads to destruction!

Grace logoGiddily gliding along the broad road that leads to destruction!ย

(
Arthur Pink, “Laughter”)

There is aย naturalย laughter, which is innocent and harmless.

There is aย spiritualย laughter, which is God-pleasing and beneficial.

There is aย carnalย laughter, which is sinful and injurious.ย

“Woe unto you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep!” (Luke 6:25). The laughter which Christ here denounced, was a state of heart which lived only for the present, and had no serious concern for the future. It was His censure of those who areย giddily gliding along the broad road that leads to destruction!ย In the light of the immediate context, the reference is to those who rejoiced in the abundance of their worldly possessions, and found their delight in making gods of their bellies.ย

“I said of laughter,ย ‘It is madness,’ย and of pleasure,ย ‘What does it accomplish?’” (Ecclesiastes 2:2). Those were the words of one who was granted the opportunity and afforded the means, of gratifying every carnal desire and of obtaining every object which the natural heart and eye can covet โ€” only to prove from experience, that all were but “vanity and vexation of spirit.” There is no real or lasting happiness in anything which money can purchase. The void within the human heart cannot be filled by the objects of time and sense. For one to pursue theย shadows โ€”ย and miss the substance; to devote himself to the things whichย perishย with the using โ€” yet be indifferent to those which are eternal; to seek his delight in gratifying the lusts of the flesh โ€” and neglect the welfare of his soul, is nothing but a species of insanity! “For as the crackling of thorns under a pot [noisy, but of brief duration] โ€” so is the laughter of the fool!” (Ecclesiastes 7:6).

“All who see Me, laugh Me to scorn!” (Psalm 22:7). So far were they from pitying Him, they added to His afflictions with their ribaldry, making jest of His very sufferings! Horrid humanity! Fearful impiety! None should ever doubt the total depravity of man, as they see here to what unspeakable depths of iniquity man sinks, when the restraining hand of God is removed from him! The spectators of the dying Redeemer’s agonies, exerted the utmost of the venom of their hearts upon Him! This was aย Diabolicalย laughter!

There is also aย divineย laughter, which is dreadful and disastrous. To such David referred: “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh” (Psalm 2:4), which is the laughter ofย derisionย against those who think to defy Him with impunity.ย

And again God says, “I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes!” (Proverbs 1:26), which is the laughter ofย divine retribution. He has “called” โ€” by His Word, His providences, His ministers, and their own consciences โ€” but they “refused” to heed Him. They were neither melted by the abundance of Hisย merciesโ€” nor awed by the dreadfulness of Hisย threats. They did not respect His Law โ€” and had no heart for His Gospel. But though He bears the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction with much long-suffering, He has appointed a day when they shall be made to reap as they have sown. As they scorned His messengers when they warned of the wrath to come โ€” so shall He turn a deaf ear then to their cries for mercy, and righteously laugh at their calamity! Oh, that none our readers may ever be the objects of this laugh!
