Hi allโ€ฆYouโ€™ll never believe this?! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย 

Today was my first day of increasing the mileage (number of laps) to a distance iโ€™d never walked without stopping before! ๐Ÿ˜จ ย 

Each lap of the trail is 2.5 miles and this month iโ€™m attempting 3 laps without stopping. So today was my first time walking with my backpack and carrying water and a trusty Grenade protein bar supplied by my lovely wife Sarah. I thought after losing 5 stone (70 pounds) my legs would be able to manage an extra couple of pounds or so, lol! ๐Ÿคฃย 

I knew it was going to be more difficult as the sun was really bright and stopped me seeing most of the trail, i even missed a turning but managed to get back on itโ€ฆBut when i was in the shade i made sure i nailed it!ย ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Areย youย born again? This is one of life’s most important questions. Jesus Christ said, “Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God!” John 3:3

It is not enough to reply, “I belong to the church; I suppose I am a Christian.” Thousands ofย nominalย Christians show none of the signs of being born again which the Scriptures have given us in the First Epistle of John.

“No one who is born of God willย continueย to sin” 1 John 3:9ย 

“We know that anyone born of God does notย continueย to sin” 1 John 5:18

A person who has been born again, or regenerated, does notย habituallyย commit sin. He no longer sins with hisย heartย andย willย andย whole inclination. There was probably a time when he did not think about whether his actions were sinful or not, and he did not always feel grieved after doing evil. There was no quarrel between him and sin; they were friends. But the true Christian . . .
ย  hates sin,ย 
ย  flees from sin,ย 
ย  fights against sin,
ย  considers sin his greatest plague,
ย  resents the burden of sin’s presence,
ย  mourns when he falls under sin’s influence,ย 
ย  and longs to be completely delivered from sin.ย 

Sin no longer pleases him, nor is it even a matter of indifference to him; it has become the horrible thing which he hates. However, he cannot eliminate its presence within him.

If he said that he had no sin, he would be lying, 1 John 1:8. But he can say that heย hatesย sin, and that the great desire of his soul is not to commit sin at all. He cannot prevent bad thoughts from entering his mind, or shortcomings, omissions, and defects from appearing in both his words and his actions. He knows that “we all stumble in many ways,” James 3:2. But he can truly say in the sight of God, that these things cause him grief and sorrow, and that his whole nature does not consent to them. What would the apostle say about you? Areย youย born again?

“No one who lives in Himย keeps onย sinning. No one whoย continuesย to sin has either seen Him or known Him. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as He is righteous.” 1 John 3:6-7ย

Sarahโ€™s stupendous post-walk nutritional lunchโ€ฆย 

Pizza

Iโ€™d like to introduce you to the best pizza iโ€™ve ever had, and iโ€™ve had thousands over the years! This is our protein pizza which we prepare on Sunday evening (we make 1 each), cut into 6 pieces and have a slice each day. We both make our own so we can have our fave toppings (Sarah often puts olives on hers) and i hate olives, lol! ๐Ÿ˜€ We make the base from turkey mince so it has no carbs but lots of protein which is great for Sarah as sheโ€™s a T1 diabetic, then i can have my fave carb source food which is dry 7 seed wholemeal toast (like Elwood Blues) and Sarah doesnโ€™t have to worry about carb counting or her blood sugar shooting up! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ˜€ย 

As a post walk meal my lovely wife Sarah prepares me with a warmโ€ฆ

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Thoughย outwardlyย we are wasting away, yetย inwardlyย we are being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16

“For our perishable earthly bodies must be transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die!” 1 Corinthians 15:53

The lesson ofย the imperishable life, has a special application to those who suffer from sickness or from any bodily affliction. It will help us to endure physical sufferings quietly and unmurmuringly, if we will remember that it is only theย outwardย man that can be touched and affected by these experiences, and that theย inwardย man may not only be kept unharmed, but may be growing all the while in beauty and strength, being spiritually renewed through pain and suffering.

A poor shoemaker in his dreary little shopย in a great city, one day noticed that there was one little place in his dark room, from which he could get a view of green fields, blue skies and faraway hills. He wisely set up his bench at that point, so that at any moment he could lift his eyes from his dull work–and have a glimpse of the great, beautiful world outside.ย 

Just so, from the darkest sick-room, and from the midst of the keenest sufferings, there is always a point from which we can see the face of Christ and have a glimpse of the glory of Heaven. If only we will find this place and get this vision, it will make it easy to endure even the greatest suffering.

“For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down–when we die and leave these bodies–we will have a home in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God Himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long for the day when we will put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.” 2 Corinthians 5:1-2

Sickness is discouraging and is hard to bear. But we should remember that the doing of the will of God is always the noblest, holiest thing we can do any hour–however hard it may be for us. If we are called to suffer, let us suffer patiently and sweetly. Under all our sharp trials, let us keep the peace of God in our hearts. Theย outwardย man may indeed decay, but theย inwardย man will be renewed day by day.

“Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also fromย presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.” Psalm 19:12, 13

Here the Psalmist prays to be kept from committing presumptuous sins. He knows the danger there is in such sins, and so pleads to be held back from them–that is, from willful, conscious, high-handed sins.

Mark the teaching, too, that these presumptuous sins spring out of the minute hidden faults. From hidden, obscure, undiscovered faults–come presumptuous sins.ย 

A slightย moral weakness–grows into an evil tendency;ย 
and theย evil tendencyย indulged–develops into a loathsome vice;ย 
and theย loathsome vice–ripens into aย presumptuous sin!ย 

We need to guard against carelessness concerning ‘little sins’.ย 
The hidden fault lurking in the nature, may grow into a presumptuous sin!

ย ย  Sow aย thought–and you will reap an act;ย 
ย ย  sow anย act–and you will reap a habit;ย 
ย ย  sow aย habit–and you will reap a character;ย 
ย ย  sow aย character–and you will reap aย destiny!

Theย course of sinย is terrible! The little beginnings of sin, grow into appalling consequences! Be afraid of little sins and temptations.

There are some people who are alwaysย courting danger. Sin seems to have aย fascinationfor them. One of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer is, “Lead us not into temptation.” To expose ourselves needlessly to temptation, is presumption! Yet there are many who do this.ย They play with fire, and wonder why they are burned!ย Theyย dally with ‘little sins’, and end inย shameful degradationย at the last! They pay the penalty in moral and spiritual ruin.ย

Hi all!

I knew i could bore you to death with another award badge already!ย ๐Ÿคฃย 

Iโ€™d just finished my 2 lap walk through the woods near my home, when i was notified of winning this badge for burning 543 Kilocalories in one walk. As iโ€™m training for a Marathon walk in April i hope to win many more of this style of badgeโ€ฆOr maybe iโ€™ll just fall to pieces instead, one of these two willย happen!ย ๐Ÿคฃย

๐Ÿ˜จ Blindman 2 Marathons in 1 day??!!

Hi allโ€ฆI need your help, experience and opinions!

After theย โ€œUltra Step Challengeโ€ last December (2021) i saidย โ€œiโ€™m not doing a challenge that iโ€™ve made up next timeโ€ฆIโ€™m going to do an organised event by the charityโ€. Well that didnโ€™t last long, as here i am again thinking of my latest challenge!! I thought iโ€™d put it to you guys first before i started a fundraising page and jumped in feet first, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

My latest ideaโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฒย 

As you may know my lovely wife Sarah is working for MS Society, so i thought iโ€™d do another challenge to help fundraise. My mum died of MS the same month i was registered blind in July 2000. So of course this charity is close to my heartโ€ฆSo here is my idea.

I thought iโ€™d try and walk 2 marathons in 1 day?? (please give me your thoughts on this)ย ๐Ÿคฃย ย In my last ultra step challenge it took me over 4 days to walk the distance of 2 marathonsโ€ฆSo i thought itโ€™d be a great idea to try and walk 2 marathons in 1 day! ๐Ÿ˜จ Or should i start with 1 marathon first? ๐Ÿค”ย 

Can this bonkers blindman do this, lol? I wanted to walk on an athletics track as the stress of walking around my local woods would be way too much external stimuli for me and that amount of distance. But it’s harder than you think to get a track for 24 hours. Any ideas? Do you think this is a good challenge? Have you had any experience of anything similar? ๐Ÿค”ย 

Iโ€™m thinking of doing this 24 hour challenge in March or May 2022, as iโ€™ll (or you) come up with a funky title for my MS March or May ideasโ€ฆAlso itโ€™ll give me some time for lots and lots of walking before i start.

So many, at times they can feel overwhelming.

One of those choices we all make each day, sometimes minute by minute, is what we choose to do.

What we think on, what we meditate on, what we listen to, what we read, all are choices.

These choices either build our faith or tear it down.

When faced with uncertainty, tragedy, and pain we have a choice.

Despair or trust.

Will we praise God through the current circumstances or will we complain about the havock?

Throughout history we see God using the things Satan meant for evil and turning it to good.

As followers of Christ, we need to choose to find joy in Him, even in the midst of incredible pain.

For we can choose joy even while we suffer.

“Cain was veryย angry, and his face was downcast.” Genesis 4:5ย 

“Cain attacked his brother Abel andย killedย him!” Genesis 4:8

See here, theย fearful growth of the evilย feelingย in Cain’s heart. It was only aย thoughtย at first, but it was admitted into the heart and cherished there. Then itย grewย until it caused a terrible crime! We learn here, the danger of cherishing even the smallest beginning of bitterness; we do not know to what it will grow!ย 

Some people think lightly ofย bad temper, laughing at it as a mere harmless weakness.
But it is a perilous mood to indulge, and we do not know to what it mayย lead.

“Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you!” In His reproof of Cain, the Lord likens his sin toย a wild beast lying in hiding by his door, ready to leap on him and devour him. This is true of allย sinย which is cherished in the heart. It may long lie quiet and seem harmless, but it is onlyย a wild beast sleeping!

There is a story of a man who took aย young tigerย and resolved to make aย petย of it. It moved about his house like a kitten and grew up fond and gentle. For a long time its savage, blood-thirsty nature seemed changed into gentleness, and the creature was quiet and harmless.ย 

But one day the man was playing with his ‘pet’, when by accident his hand was scratched and the beast tasted blood. That one taste, aroused all theย fierce tiger nature, and the ferocious animal flew on his master and tore him to pieces!

So it is, with the passions and lusts of the old nature, which are onlyย pettedย andย tamedย and allowed to reside in the heart. They will crouch at the door in treacherous lurking, and in some unguarded hour they will rise up in all their old ferocity!ย 

It is never safe to make pets ofย tigers!ย 

It is never safe to make pets ofย little sins!

We never know what sin may grow into–if we let it abide in our heart!ย 

“Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him!” That is what came of the passion ofย envyย in Cain’s heart! It was left unrebuked, unrepented of, uncrushed–and in time it grew to fearful strength. Then in an evil moment, itsย tiger natureย asserted itself!

We never know to what dreadful stature, aย little sinย may grow!

Yayโ€ฆA huge (and very proud) congratulations to my lovely wife Sarah for starting her new job managing the legacy team at MS Society today! ๐Ÿ™Œ For all the years iโ€™ve known her, she’s been passionate, enthusiastic, knowledgable, driven, fun, caring, loving andโ€ฆalways looking to overachieve! ๐Ÿ˜€ย  ย Now she has a new job managing a new team, which means she has many more new goals to smashโ€ฆGo big or go home, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ
My Mum & MS (Multiple Sclerosis)โ€ฆAs you may know, my mum died, the same month that I was registered blind, after a 12 year debilitating and demoralising struggle with progressive MS. So youโ€™ll understand why I am so pleased she will be working for this charity, which is close to my heartโ€ฆand my families hearts too. โค๏ธ
And as would be expected I have already been enlisted to think up some fun ways to raise funds and support MS Society and their wonderful workโ€ฆ. Any ideas for new fundraising challenges would be very welcomeโ€ฆโ€ฆ..๐Ÿค”ย

ย Today iโ€™m celebrating a brobdingnagian 17 years since i met my lovely wife Sarah at โ€œSight Village, Birmingham, UKโ€ ๐Ÿ™Œ ย 

This is a major Sight Village show in Birmingham which is held in July each year. Exhibitors throughout the world take part and welcome many thousands of visitors, including people who are blind or partially sighted, professionals, business people and family members.

I was there (from Derby) working for a charity called LOOK and Sarah was there (from Surrey) working for RNIB. She came to my table as she had a magazine which she had just published an article about LOOK and wanted to show me. Sarah opened the magazine and said here are the pictures and the article, i said โ€œWow, Mmmm, Awww and fantasticโ€ฆIt all looks greatโ€ which made Sarah quite proud of her work. I then said while laughing โ€œyou know i didnโ€™t see any of what youโ€™ve just shown me, as iโ€™m blind!โ€. Then as always, a brief pause as Sarah tries to check out my eyes to see if iโ€™m joking, then Sarah laughed and said โ€œNo way, me too!โ€. We both approach blindness in a similar way and love blossomed from that point. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ˜€ย

This is one of my favourite Bible verses that i try desperately ย each day to live up to. As soon as i first read this verse it convicted me straight away and i knew i wanted to be a husband like that!

๐Ÿ™ Prayer

Holy Spirit, thanks for being a constant guiding presence in my life. Give me the faith to take practical and radical action to keep in step with You, so that You can love my spouse through me in a way that will sustain a fun, loving & trusting relationship. Amen.

“Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul!” Psalm 66:16

No one wordย can fully express all that God has done for my soul, though in general it may be described asย saved.ย Saved!ย Ah, that is a grand word worthy of being written in letters of gold!ย A saved soulย includes many things–I can only mention them:

1. A saved soul isย a God-pardoned soul. All its sins are forgiven, and its iniquities are drowned in thatย deluge of pardoning loveย that rises high above the topmost peaks of all its mountain sins!

2. A saved soul isย a God-reconciled soul. Once at enmity, God and the sinner are now at peace. All differences are at an end. Theย prodigal sinnerย has been embraced and kissed by the father. Theย rebelย has thrown down his weapons, and bent his knee to the Monarch–and the Monarch has raised him up, and with a smile of love, has put him among His children. If I may so express it,ย God and the sinner have met and shaken hands beneath the shadow of the cross!ย They are at at-one-ment there.

3. A saved soul is alsoย a sin-delivered soul. This is something more than pardon, or reconciliation. It is a higher blessing.ย Pardonย remits theย punishmentย of sin, but leaves theย guiltย of sin. Butย justificationย acquits the person of every charge. Believer, your sins are not merely forgiven–but they are done away with, put out of sight, removed from you as far as the remotest east is from the extreme west! In the eye of God, you are as guiltless as His spotless Son! “You are altogether beautiful, My love; there is no flaw in you!” Song of Songs 4:7ย 

4. A saved soul is alsoย a God-arrayed soul. This is higher still. The former blessing was a negation of guilt, this is a possession of righteousness. A righteousness, mark you, that is not capable of improvement, but a righteousness that is superlative in its quality–it is the righteousness of God Himself! A saved soul, even to the omniscient eye of Deity, is not only without spot or wrinkle or any such thing–but it is altogether lovely and glorious, robed in the splendor of “Jehovah Tsidkenu”–“The Lord our Righteousness!”

5. A saved soul isย a Heaven-entitled soul. This crowns all. Not merely am I delivered from Hell, but in my hand is placed a title-deed to eternal glory! This is no fiction or flight of imagination, but a blessed fact. Possessed by every saint, is a title to Heaven that God Himself will declare to be valid to all eternity.ย 

Now believer, if all these things are included in what God has done for our souls, then did I not say rightly that many words were necessary to describe the work? Let us then, asย God-pardoned, God-reconciled, Sin-delivered, God-arrayed, Heaven-entitled souls–call on all, far and near, to come and listen to our joyous tale.

God looks upon His redeemed people as the masterpieces of His love and power; and He will before assembled worlds exhibit us as the grandest trophies Heaven contains!

Hi all! Each time our wedding anniversary comes round, i canโ€™t believe how much our marriage has grown more and more fruitful. Our love keeps blossoming through every season and i thank God for Sarah.! โค๏ธ

For our 14th wedding anniversary we decided to visit Hunstanton, Norfolk, and stay over for one night in the Golden Lion hotel. This was โ€˜The Blind Sightseersโ€™ first trip away from home since Jan 2020 so we were ready, lol.ย 

As you may know Hunstanton is where we had our honeymoon (and then 5 consecutive anniversaries) in the Old Lighthouse, so we were interested to see if anything had changed?!ย 

After leaving home at 7am we knew it was going to be a long day, especially after a 5 hour journeyโ€ฆA taxi, train, underground train, another train and a bus we arrived at Hunstanton a little past lunchtime! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผย 

NO WAY THE DOUGHNUT VAN IS STILL HERE!!!ย

The sound of the โ€˜Blind Sightseers Gastronomic Leaderboard Bellโ€™ exploded as we quickly devoured the doughnut.ย 

We managed to get 1 each of the consistently perfect doughnutsโ€ฆAnd it was even the same lady whoโ€™d served us 14 years ago on our honeymoon! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ As we walked up to the van she said โ€œYour usual?โ€ ๐Ÿคฃ

After eating the best doughnuts in the world we started our walk around Hunstanton. We only walked about 200 yards when we found??? ๐Ÿค”ย

This beast is a 1967 Landing and Recovery Craft and isย ex USA Army and used in Vietnam. It now gives sea tours in Hunstanton Norfolk and is classed as a ferryโ€ฆOh and itโ€™s alsoย powered by 2 Cummins 920 V8 engines! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ˜€

We had been on this beast years ago and knew it went up to the lighthouse and backโ€ฆAnd since we canโ€™t go on a cruise ship, this was the nearest thing, lol.ย ย

ย The boat ride didnโ€™t disappoint and shortly after we needed to check into the hotel. There was only 1 room left and it was at the rear of the hotelโ€ฆBut the shower was hot and powerful (rips the skin off) so all was well, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ

Now iโ€™d dropped off my heavy backpack it was time to explore to see if anything had changed?! Noโ€ฆIt was all exactly as it was 14 years ago, the only thing (our fave shop) Surface had closed. This was our place to buy surfer clothes each yearโ€ฆWell i say we, Sarah used to but i was always too bigโ€ฆBut iโ€™d lost 5 stone now so was looking forwards to finally buying a topโ€ฆOh well, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

After a long day of walking around the place about 5 times, drinking coffee, eating chips, doughnuts and scones we were sipping a glass of red wine and watching the sun set over Hunstanton.

The walking…

I have no idea how we managed it as Hunstanton is a very small townโ€ฆBut weโ€™d managed to walk around 10 miles over the afternoon and evening! This was a blessing after what weโ€™d eaten on our mini holidayโ€ฆNow itโ€™s time to rest after a full day as we only have the morning to go!

The next day…

After a small breakfast we were excited to go for another walk. As it was also early there was hardly anybody else aroundโ€ฆAnd as this walkway is one of my fave places to walk in the world (empty and very wide), it was a good start to the day.ย

Since losing 5 stone over this last year, iโ€™ve also gone from a size XXL t-shirt to a size medium. I have never been a medium throughout my whole adult life. Iโ€™m loving having to get a new wardrobe andย ordering aย medium size and it fitting like a gloveโ€ฆNot much beats this feeling!ย ๐Ÿ˜€

My lovely wife Sarah has always LOVEDย sunbathingโ€ฆAnd i HAVNโ€™T, lol! Ifย youโ€™ve ever followed usย โ€œThe Blind Sightseersโ€ on ourย travels, youโ€™ll know that Sarah is always in the sun and iโ€™mย somewhere melting into a puddle of goo!ย ๐Ÿคฃ

Iโ€™ve never been comfortable in the sun and always hated the heat, iโ€™d always try and find shade or find some other way out of it but stay as close to Sarah as i could. Just sitting outside a coffee shop or in our own backย garden seriously felt like my bones were being steamed in a cauldron of boiling water, whilst my skin was being attacked by a million angry wasps with mini switchblades ย cutting into me! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Now iโ€™ve lost 5 stone (70 pounds) i sit out with Sarah everyday in our garden (when the sun is out anyway) and iโ€™m always the oneย wanting to stay out longerโ€ฆ

“Turn my eyes from looking at what isย worthless.” Psalm 119:37ย 

We must be alwaysย turning–if we would keep our life true and according to God’s commandments.ย 

There are someย flowersย which always turn toward theย sun. There wasย a little potted rose-bushย in a sick-room which I visited. It sat by the window. One day I noticed that the one rose on the bush was looking toward the light. I referred to it, and the sick woman said that her daughter had turned the rose around several times toward the darkness of the room–but that each time the little flower had twisted itself back, until again its face was toward theย light. It would not look into theย darkness.

The rose taught me a lesson: never to allow myself to look toward any evil, but instantly to turn from it. Not a moment should we permit our eyes to be inclined toward anything sinful. To yield to one moment’s sinful act, is to defile the soul. One of the main messages of the Bible is, “Turn from the wrong, the base, the crude, the unworthy–to the right, the pure, the noble, the godlike!” We should not allow even an unholy thought to stay a moment in our mind–but should turn from its very first suggestion, with face fully toward Christ, the Holy One.

Hi all.

Sarah & i were walking through the woods last night on our beautiful evening walkโ€ฆAnd i mentioned that iโ€™d not had hay fever at all this year?! Itโ€™s been the first year since iโ€™d not suffered from it and iโ€™m wondering if itโ€™s anything to do with losing 5 stone (over this last year) and eating healthier foods etc?! I thought this maybe a question for Ellie at โ€˜New Creation Ministriesโ€ as her blog posts have inspired and motivated me, especially over this last year. ๐Ÿ˜€ย 

Sarah also said that i should write a few posts on more of the changes iโ€™ve experienced since losing 5 stone (like this one) and share it with you guysโ€ฆSo here is the first one โ€œhay feverโ€. “Lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me aย thornย in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.” 2 Corinthians 12:7

Paul tells us that his “thorn” was given to him–to keep him humble, and save him from spiritual peril. Without it, he would have been exalted above measure and would have lost his spirituality. We do not know how much of his deep insight into the things of God, and his power in service for his Master–Paul owed toย this torturing “thorn”.ย It seemed to hinder him, and it caused him incessant suffering–but it detained him in theย low valley of humility, made him ever conscious of his own weakness and insufficiency, and thus kept him near to Christ whose home is with the humble.

There are few people who have not some “thorn” rankling in their flesh:ย 
in one it is an infirmity of speech;ย 
in another an infirmity of sight;ย 
in another an infirmity of hearing.ย 

Or it may be lameness;ย 
or a slow but incurable disease;ย 
or constitutional timidity,ย 
or excessive nervousness;ย 
or a disfiguring bodily deformity;ย 
or an infirmity of temper.ย 

Or it may be in one’s home–which is cold, unloving, and uncongenial;
or it may be some moral failure;ย 
or it may be a bitter personal disappointment through untrue friendship or unrequited love.ย 

Who has not his thorn?

We should never forget that in one sense, ourย thornย is a “messenger ofย Satan,” who desires by it:
ย  to hurt our life,
ย  to mar our peace,
ย  to spoil the divine beauty in us, and
ย  to break our communion with Christ.ย 

On the other hand, however,ย Christย Himself has a loving design in our “thorn.” He wants it to be a blessing to us. He would have it keep us humble–and save us from becoming vain. Or He means it to soften our hearts–and make us more gentle. He would haveย the uncongenial things in our environmentย to discipline us into heavenly-mindedness, give us greater self-control, and help us to keep our hearts loving and sweet–amid harshness and unlovingness. He would haveย our painย teach us endurance and patience; and ourย sorrowย andย lossย teach us faith.

Thus,ย ourย thornย may either be a choiceย blessingย to us–or it may do us irreparableย harm.ย 

If we allow it to fret us; if we chafe, resist, and complain; if we lose faith and lose heart–it will spoil our life!ย 

But if we accept it in the faith thatย in its ugly burden–it has a blessing for us; if we endure it patiently, submissively, unmurmuringly; if we seek grace to keep our heart gentle and true amid all the trial, temptation, and suffering it causes–it will work good for us; and out ofย its bitterness–will come sweet fruit!

“I haveย learnedย to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I haveย learnedย the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in need.” Philippians 4:11-12

Life is a ‘school’. All itsย experiencesย are ‘lessons’.

We are all in ‘Christ’s school’–and He is always ‘educating’ us.ย 

Disciplesย are ‘learners’ and all true Christians are disciples.ย 
We enter theย lowest gradeย when we begin to be Christians.ย 
We have everything to learn.ย 
Each new experience, is aย new lessonย set for us by the great Teacher.

The business ofย noble Christian living, isย learning. We know nothing when we begin. Learning is not confined to what we get from reading books.ย All of lifeย is a school. ‘Christ’s books’ are ever being put into our hands, and ‘lessons’ are set for us continually.

Paul tells us of one of theย lessonsย he had learned in the ‘school of experience’. “I have learned,” he said, “the secret of being content in any and every situation.” We are glad to know that Paul had toย learnย to be contented. We are apt to think that such a man as he was, did not have toย learn to liveย as we common people do; that he always knew, for instance, how to be contented. Here, however, we have the confession thatย he had to ‘learn the lesson’ just as we do. He did not always know ‘the secret of contentment’. He was well on in years when he said this, from which we conclude that it took him aย long timeย to learn the lesson–and that it was notย easyย for him to do it.ย Christ’s school is not easy.

Sorrowย is a choice lesson in Christ’s school. Sorrow is not anย accidentย breaking into our life, without meaning or purpose. God could prevent the coming of the sorrow, if He so desired. He has all power, and nothing can touch the life of any of His children–unless He is willing. Since we know that God loves us and yet permits us to suffer–we may be quite sure that there is a blessing, something good, in whatever it is that brings us pain or sorrow.

We shrink fromย pain. We would run away fromย afflictions. We would refuse to acceptย sorrow. But there are things worth suffering for–things dearer thanย easeย andย pleasure. We learn lessons in pain, which repay a thousand times the cost of our tears!

The Bible tells us that God preserves the tears of His children, putting them inย His tear-bottle. Tears are sacred to God, because of theย blessingsย that come through them, to His children. In Heaven, we will look back on our lives of pain and sorrow on the earth, and will find that ourย best lessonsย have come through ourย tears!

All theย Christian gracesย have to be learned in ‘Christ’s school’. There Paul had learned contentment. He never would have learned it, however, if he had had onlyย pleasureย andย easeย all his life. Contentment comes from learning to do without things, which we once supposed to beย essential to our comfort. Paul had learned contentment through finding such fullness of blessing in Christ–that he did not need the ‘secondary things’ any more.

Perhapsย weย would succeed better in learning this same grace–if we had fewer of life’s comforts, if sometimes we had experience ofย need. The continuity of blessings that flow like a river into our lives, gives us no opportunity toย learn contentment.ย 

When sufferings come into our life . . .ย 
ย  disagreeable things, instead of pleasant things;ย 
ย  hunger and poverty, instead of plenty;ย 
ย  rough ways, instead of flower-strewn paths;ย 
God is teaching us the ‘lesson of contentment’, so that we can say at length, that we haveย learned the secret of being content!

“I am cast down!”

And why are you cast down?

“My heart is burdened with a sense of my short-comings! Every duty I perform is so imperfect. Every purpose I form is so soon frustrated. Every hope of seeing better days is so soon beclouded.

My heart is so fearfully depraved.ย 
My life is so unlike the life of Jesus.ย 
My temper is so unholy.ย 
My prayers are so brief and heartless.ย 
My praises are so feeble and fitful.ย 
I do so little good.ย 
I live to so little purpose.ย 
My evidences are so dim.ย 
My prospects are so overcast.ย 
I am harassed sometimes with the fear of death.ย 
I cannot realize the glories of Heaven.ย 
I am dissatisfied with the world โ€” and yet glued to it!ย 
I hate sin โ€” and yet fall into it!ย 
I am a riddle, a mystery, a mass of inconsistency!ย 
Is it, then, any wonder that I am cast down?”

No, if you look at yourself, and pore over the things you have named โ€” then it is no wonder that you are cast down! They are enough to cast anyone down! But if you carry them to the throne of grace, if you there confess them before God, if you look to Jesus to save you from them โ€” then, in spite of them โ€” you will not long be cast down.

I know it is difficult to do this. There is a natural proneness to pore over such things. One feels at times a secret liking to indulge in gloomy thoughts.

But we must look away from self โ€” for if we do not, we shall become anxious, doubting and gloomy! We must run the race, not looking at our imperfections, short-comings, and failures โ€” but looking unto Jesus. He knows what we are. He knew what we would be โ€” before He called us by His grace; yes, before He shed His blood for us!

He loved us, as sinners.ย 
He died for us, as sinners.ย 
He called us, as sinners.

He saves us, as sinners. He will have all the glory of saving us, and He will get great glory by doing so, because we are such great sinners; and do not, cannot, do anything to repay Him for His wondrous love! Salvation is by free grace โ€” from first to last! Believe this, and it will raise up your drooping mind!

The life-boat of free grace has put you on board the vessel of salvation, and that will convey you safely to the port of glory! Do not look at your spiritual destitution, or feebleness, or incapacity, or imperfections โ€” but trust in your Pilot, rely on your Captain, and expect His mercy and merit to land you safe in Heaven at last!

As imperfect as you now are, and as imperfect you will be โ€” your dying prayer will still be, “God be merciful unto me โ€” a sinner!”

Hope in God!
His mercy is great unto the heavens,ย 
His grace is as free as the air,ย 
His love is as changeless as His nature,
His promise is as immutable as His love.

Hope in God, for you shall yet praise Him. He will save you for His own sake, and present you before assembled worlds as a monument of His mercy, and a trophy of His grace!

“Since he had no sword, he ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill the giant and cut off his head!” 1 Samuel 17:50-51

If he had not cut off the giant’s head–the old Philistine champion would have gotten up by and by, and walked away; for he was onlyย stunned, notย killed, by the stone. David madeย sure workย of his victory!

A great many ofย our attacks upon sinย in our own hearts, and in the world–onlyย stun, and do notย killย the evil. We walk away, thinking we have done a fine thing. But shortly, we meet the ‘old giant’ again, stalking abroad as before! He soon recovers from our blow, and we have to fight the battle over; and perhaps we fight it again in the sameย halfheartedย way–and thus on and on, to the end of our life!

Most of us have had just such experience as this with our own evil lusts and passions. Weย overcomeย them very often and think each time that we areย throughย with them, but soon again they are as active as ever.

We need to learn a lesson from David andย finish our victories by cutting off the head of every giant we strike down!

There is no other way of killing sins!

Theย lifeย is in theย head, and the head must be struck off–or the enemy will be facing us again in a day or two, with but aย scarย on his forehead!

The only way to get a real victory over vices is toย decapitate them!ย Bruises and wounds are not enough. There must be thorough work done, in the name of the Lord.ย Half-way measuresย will not avail.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Colossians 3:5ย 

“Samuelย hewed Agag to piecesย before the Lord.” 1 Samuel 15:33ย 

Like Samuel,ย we must hew ourย Agagsย to pieces!ย

My Engine & Body Analogy…

As i used to be a panel beater in a bodyshop, the engine analogy just seemed to click for me when thinking about my nutrition etc. As i needed to be in a healthy calorie deficit to lose weight, i needed to find out what kind of engine i had and how much fuel (calories) it burns.

The Lord is my Shepherd!

“The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need!”ย 
Psalm 23:1

Theย shepherdย is a favorite Scriptural picture of theย divine love and care. In the Old Testament, theย twenty-third Psalmย gathers the whole wonderful truth in exquisite lines, which are dear to young and old wherever the Bible is known. Then in the New Testament, when our Lord would give His friends the sweetest revealings of His heart toward them, and tell them what they are to Him, and what He would be to them–He says,ย I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”ย John 10:11ย 

The Hebrew shepherdย livesย with his sheep. If they are out in the storm–he is with them. If they are exposed to danger–so is he.ย 
Just so, Christ lives with His people. He enters into closest relations with them.

The shepherdย knowsย his sheep. He has aย nameย for each one and calls them all by their names.ย 
Just so, Christ knows each one of His friends, and has intimate personal knowledge of each one. He knows the best in us–and also the worst. He knows our faults, our sins, our wanderings. Yet, knowing us as we are–He loves us still and never wearies of us!

The shepherd is mostย gentleย with his sheep. He does notย driveย them–but goes before them andย leadsย them. When they need rest on the way–heย makesย them lie down, and chooses for their resting-place, not the dusty road–butย green pastures. He is especially kind to theย lambs, gathers them in his arms and carries them in his bosom.ย 
All this is an exquisite picture of theย gentleness of our Good Shepherd in His care of His sheep.ย He is thoughtful toward the weak. He loves theย lambsย and makes room for them in His bosom. Whatever the need is, there is something in the heart of Christ which meets its craving and supplies its lack! “He will feed His flock like a shepherd.ย He will carry theย lambsย in his arms,holding them close to His heart.ย He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.”ย Isaiah 40:11

The shepherdย defendsย his flock in all danger. Often he had to risk his own safety, even his life, inย protectingย his sheep.ย 
Just so, the Good Shepherd gives Hisย life–for His sheep!

Christ’s sheep are absolutelyย safeย in His keeping. “I give unto them eternal life,” He said; “and they will never perish–ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand!” Then at last, He will bring His own allย safely home, “and they shall become one flock–with one Shepherd!”

How can we learn contentment?

How can weย learnย contentment?ย 

One step toward contentment, isย patient submission to unavoidable ills and hardships. No earthly lot is perfect. No mortal ever yet in this world, has found a set of circumstances without some drawback. There are . . .
ย ย trialsย which we cannot change into blessings,
ย ย burdensย which we cannot lay down,
ย ย crossesย which we must continue to carry,
ย ย thornsย in the flesh which must remain with their rankling pain.
When we have such trials, why should we not sweetly accept them as part ofย God’s best wayย with us?ย 

Discontentย never made . . .
ย  a rough path smoother,
ย  a heavy burden lighter,
ย  a bitter cup less bitter,
ย  a dark way brighter,
ย  a sore sorrow less sore.ย 
It only makes matters worse!ย 

One who accepts with patience, that which he cannot change–has learned one secret of victorious living.

Another part of the lesson, is that we can learn toย moderate our desires. “Having food and clothing,” says Paul again, “let us be content with these.” Very much of our discontent arises from envy of those who seem to be more favored than ourselves. Many people lose most of the comfort out of their own lot–in coveting the finer, more luxurious things which some neighbor has. Yet if they knew the whole story of the life they envy for its greater prosperity, they probably would not exchange for it their own lowlier life with its more humble circumstances. Or if they could make the exchange, it is not likely they would find half so much real happiness in the other position, as they would have enjoyed in their own.ย 

Contentment does not dwell so often inย palaces–as in the homes of theย humble. Theย tall peaksย rise higher and are more conspicuous–but the winds smite them more fiercely than they do theย quiet valleys. And surely, the lot in life which God makes for us, is always theย bestย which could be made for us for the time. He knows better than we do, what our true needs are.ย 

The realย causeย of ourย discontentย is not in ourย circumstances; if it were, a change of circumstances might cure it. It is inย ourselves, and wherever we go–we shall carry ourย discontent heartย with us. The onlyย cureย which will affect anything, must be the curing of theย fever of discontentย in us.

A fine secret of contentment, lies inย finding and extracting all the pleasure we can get from the things we have–the common, everyday things; while we enter upon no mad, vain chase afterย impossible dreams. In whatever state we are in, we may find therein enough for our needs.

No earthly misfortune can touch the wealth which a Christian holds in the divine promises and hopes. Just in the measure, therefore, in which weย learn to live for spiritual and unseen eternal realities–do we find contentment amid earth’s trials and losses. If we would live to please God, to build up Christlike character in ourselves, and to lay up treasure in Heaven–we shall not depend for happiness, on the way things go with us here on earth, nor on the measure of temporal goods we have. The earthly desires are crowded out by the higher and spiritual desires. We can do withoutย childhood’s toys–when we haveย manhood’sย better possessions. We desire theย toys of this worldย less, as we get more of God and Heaven into our hearts.

Paul knew this secret. He cheerfully gave up all that this world had for him. Money had no power over him. He knew how to live inย plenty; but he did not fret whenย povertyย came instead. He was content in any trial, because earth meant so little–and Christ meant so much to him. He did notย needย the things he did not have. He was not made poor by the things he lost. He was not vexed by the sufferings he had to endure–because the sources of his life were in Heaven and could not be touched by earthly experiences of pain or loss.

These are hints of the way we may learn to be content in whatever circumstances. Surely the lesson is worth learning! One year of sweet contentment, amid earth’s troublous scenes–is better than a whole lifetime of vexed, restless discontent! The lessonย canย be learned, too, by anyone who is truly Christ’s disciple; for did not the Master say, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give unto you.”

The artist paintedย lifeย as a dark, storm-swept sea, covered with wrecks. Then out of the midst of the wild waves, he made to rise a great rock, in a cleft of which, high up, amid herbage and flowers–he painted a dove sitting quietly on her nest. It is a picture of Christian peace in the midst of this world’s strifes and storms. In the cleft of the Rock, is the home of contentment.

It needs theย presenceย andย powerย of the Holy Spirit! For unless the Holy Spirit works–your minister may preach, your church may meet–but no real good will be done! God’s work is carried on, not by might nor by power–but by the Spirit of the Lord Almighty. It is the Spirit who must . . .
ย ย  open the heart,ย 
ย ย  quicken the soul, andย 
ย ย  sanctify the person!

And if the Spirit works–then the feeblest ministry is efficient, and the smallest church prospers!

All theย successย that followed the preaching of Peter and the labors of Paul, was from the Holy Spirit. Therefore Paul says, “Godย gave the increase.”ย Thenย the church felt herย needย of the Spirit; she realized herย dependenceย on that divine Agent; she prayed with faith, fervor, and importunity for the blessing; and God answered her prayers, and filled His servants with the Holy Spirit and with power!

But now-a-days,ย we merelyย talkย of the Spirit–rather than feel our need!ย 
We boast of ourย instruments–rather than realize our dependence on the Almighty Agent!

“I have not come to call theย righteous, butย sinnersย to repentance.” Luke 5:32

That is, such as see themselves asย sinners, and thereby in aย lostย condition.ย 
“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save theย lost.” Luke 19:10

God will have the soul truly sensible of theย bitterness of sin–before it shall taste theย sweetness of mercy. Theย plough of convictionย must go deep, and make deep furrows in the heart, before God will sow the preciousย seed of graceย there–so that it may have depth of earth to grow in.ย 

This isย the unchangeable method of Godย in bestowing grace–to begin withย conviction of sin.ย 
ย  First to show man hisย sin–then his Savior;ย 
ย  first hisย danger–then his Redeemer;ย 
ย  first hisย wound–then his cure;ย 
ย  first hisย ownย vileness–then Christ’s righteousness.ย 

The sinner must see the worthlessness and vileness of hisย ownย righteousness–before he can be saved byย Christ’sย righteousness. The Israelites are first stung with theย fieryย serpents–and then theย brazenย serpent is set up to heal them.ย 

We must see theย leprosyย of our righteousness, and be brought to cry out,ย “Unclean, unclean!”ย We must mourn for Him whom we have pierced–and then He sets open for us “a fountain to cleanse us from all sin and impurity.” Zechariah 12:10, 13:1.

Be convinced of theย evilย of sin–theย filthyย andย heinousย nature of it.ย 
Sin is the greatest evil in the world:
ย  it wrongs God;
ย  it wounds Christ;
ย  it grieves the Holy Spirit;
ย  it damns a precious soul.
All other evils cannot be compared with this. Though to DO sin is the worst work–yet to SEE sin is the best sight! Sin discovered in its vileness–makes Christ to be desired in His fullness!

Alas! it is Christ’s infiniteย righteousnessย which must atone for our sins–for it is an infinite God whom we have sinned against!ย 

If ever yourย sin is pardoned–it is Christ’s infiniteย mercyย which must pardon it!ย 

If ever you areย reconciled to God–it is Christ’s infiniteย meritย which must do it!ย 

If ever yourย heart is changed–it is Christ’s infiniteย powerย which must effect it!ย 

If ever yourย soul escapes Hell, and is saved at last–it is Christ’s infiniteย graceย which must save it!

Worldly men imagine that there is true excellency and true happiness in those things which they are pursuing. They think that if they could but obtain them, that they would be happy. But when they obtain them, and cannot find happiness–then they look for happiness in something else, and are still upon the futile pursuit.

There is a transcendent glory, and an ineffable sweetness in Christ.

Jesus Christ hasย true excellency, and so great an excellency that when you come to truly see Him, you look no further, but your mind rests there.

You see that you had been pursuingย shadows, but now you have found theย substance.

You realize that you had been seeking happiness in theย stream, but now you have found theย ocean.

The excellency of Christ is an object adequate to the natural cravings of the soul, and is sufficient to fill its capacity.

Christ has an infinite excellency, such as the mind desires, in which it can find no bounds.
The more the mind contemplates Him, the more excellent does He appear.

Each new discovery of Christ makes His beauty appear more ravishing, and the mind can see no end to His excellency. There is room enough for the mind to go deeper and deeper, and never come to the bottom.

Christ’s excellency is always fresh and new, and will as much delight us after we have beheld Him a thousand or ten thousand years–as when we have seen Him the first moment.

The soul is exceedingly ravished when it first looks on the beauty of Christ. It is never weary of Him.

Jesus had high expectations that His disciples would understand their responsibility to continue His ministry. On His way to the Garden of Gethsemane He explained how they could succeed in the mission He had given them by teaching them about grapes.

Use your imagination with me for a minute. Letโ€™s put ourselves right in the crowd with Jesus and His disciples on their last night together.

I first

They ate the Passover meal together in an upper room. During the meal Jesuscomforted them by giving them His peace and assuring them that everything would be all right. Look at the last verse of John, 14:31 โ€ฆโ€but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded me. Get up let us go from here.โ€

Why does the worldย rejectย the wondrous Savior? Why do theyย abhorย Him who is altogether lovely, andย hateย Him who is the best Friend of sinners?ย 

O men of the world! what good can you desire which is not in Christ? The excellencies ofย earthย are but His footstool; the excellencies ofย Heavenย are but His throne! How excellent, then, mustย He Himselfย be!ย 

His treasures are infinite–and open for you!ย 

In Jesus are . . .
ย ย riches–if you are poor;ย 
ย ย honor–if you are despised;ย 
ย ย friendship–if you are forsaken;
ย ย help–if you are injured;
ย ย mercy–if you are miserable;
ย ย joy–if you are disconsolate;ย 
ย ย protection–if you are in danger;
ย ย deliverance–if you are a captive;
ย ย life–if you are mortal; and
ย ย all things–if you have nothing at all.ย 

Time and eternity are His–and He can give you all the glorious things of eternity!

Moreover, He can deliver you . . .

ย  fromย self–the most hurtful of all companions;
ย  fromย death–the most dreadful of all changes;
ย  fromย Satan— the most subtle of all enemies;
ย  fromย Hell–the most horrible of all prisons; and
ย  fromย wrath–the most horrifying doom of all sinners!

Now, where will you find such a one as Jesus?ย 

Why, then, refuse life, and seek after death and damnation?

All Heaven is enamored with His beauty!

The longer we look on ‘created gaieties’, the leaner and less lovely they grow; so that, by the time we have viewed them forty, fifty, or sixty years–we see nothing butย vanityย in the creature! But when ten thousand ages are employed in beholding the perfection and beauty of Jesus, He still appearsย more and more lovely–evenย altogether lovely!

Alas! I can say nothing ofย His true excellencies!ย They overwhelm my laboring thought, and are too vast for my feeble conception to bring forth!

The greatness of the sin of gluttony!

1. Gluttony is a sin exceedingly contrary to the love of God–it is idolatry!ย 
What an odious, swinish, damning sin it is–for a man’s heart to be set upon his belly!

2. Gluttony is self-murder! Though it does not kill suddenly–it kills surely!

3. Gluttony is a deadly enemy to theย mind, and to all the noble employments of reason.

4. Gluttony dulls theย bodyย as well as the mind. It makes men heavy, and drowsy and slothful.

5. Gluttony is the immediate effect of a carnal mind, and of the damnable sin of flesh-pleasing.ย 

6. Gluttony is the breeder and feeder of all other lusts.

7. Gluttony is a base and beastly kind of sin.

8. Gluttony is a wasteful consumer and devourer of the creatures of God.

9. Gluttony is a most unthankful sin–it takes God’s mercies, and spews them as it were in His face!

10. Gluttony is a sin which turns your own mercies, and wealth, and food–into your snare and deadly ruin. You please your throat–and poison your soul!

11. Gluttony is a thief that robs you of your estates, and devours that which is given you for better uses, and for which you must give account to God.

12. Gluttony is a sin so much the greater–by how much the more delight you have in the committing of it. The sweetest, most voluntary and beloved sin–is the greatest sin. Few sins are more pleasant and beloved than gluttony.

I feel such a weariness of this world that nothing here gives me anything more than a momentary, passing pleasure–and it is gone at a glance.

Oh, to have such a Friend as Jesus, who feels all our sorrows, carries all our burdens; and has promised to bring us safely through this trying world, and place us at last at His own right hand, where neither sickness nor sorrow shall ever come!ย

Yay, Safe On The Dockโ€ฆ.๐Ÿ›ณ

Upon leaving the ship it felt like coming home, as we knew exactly where we needed to go as we were here last year (read post).ย Once we found and boarded our coach ready for our excursion to the nutmeg factory, then on to the chocolate factory, we settled back and enjoyed the view. We had visited the Nutmeg factory last year as itโ€™s Sarahโ€™s fave place, as the incredible smell of nutmeg fills her with warm memories of her Nan Peters when she used it in her legendary rice pudding. And now we knew what to expectโ€ฆWe could find and buy more nutmeg. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

We were blessed once more with the stunning beauty of this place as we drove around the coast and the luscious hills. โ˜€๏ธ ย

This time we were the first ones in the gift shop and ready to get some of the amazing nutmeg that fills all kinds of products. Sarah bought an omnifarious mixture of products including…Aloe Vera oils etc (wow nutmeg and aloe vera)โ€ฆShe had missed getting some of this last year when we had a similar tour. We really didnโ€™t think weโ€™d see this place again (never mind the first time) and it was such a blessing to be hereโ€ฆAawww that smell! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

The Chocolate Factory…๐Ÿซ

This was very educational and interesting. The local guide took us around the beautiful grounds and factory showing us different plants they grow, including the cocoa trees and how they harvest the beans, dry and ferment the seeds, crack the shells to emit the cocoa nibs (the actual cocoa their chocolate is made with)โ€ฆWatch video below. ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

Sorry but didnโ€™t get any photos or videos of the factory. But the local Mango & Lemon punch was amazing and refreshingโ€ฆBut that was a shadow of the ginger & dark chocolate bar! I saved it until we were back in the UK but i now wished iโ€™d bought about 10 of them instead of 1, i think we need to go back next year!! ย ย

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH!!!

Welcome to Bonaire on this fantastic occasionโ€ฆI wonder what surprise is in store for Sarah? ๐Ÿค” ย 

Arawak Off-road Safari…ย 

This trip is all about getting to grips with Bonaireโ€™s historic best bits. Clamber aboard one of the 4x4s, and in a couple of minutes youโ€™ll be whizzing along the off-road trails.ย 

First, youโ€™ll climb into the Subi Rincon hills, where the convoy will stop at a set of time-worn Indian caves. Then, itโ€™s on to one of the islandโ€™s only two towns โ€“ Rincon. Keep an eye out for the honey-yellow church tower as you pass through, then hop off the truck when you arrive at pretty Boca Onima. This rocky stretch of coastline is home to some of the best cave art in Bonaire, which gives you a real glimpse of the islandโ€™s past.ย 

One of the best bits is saved โ€˜til last โ€“ the beauty spot, Seru Largu. This cross-topped monument sits on a raised platform, setting you up with panoramic views of the capital, Kralendijk.

On the dockโ€ฆ๐Ÿ›ณย 

This shore excursion was a second choice as the first choice was sold out weeks before weโ€™d even started our cruise. We were thinking about the 4×4 Land Rover trip weโ€™d done in the Azores(see here) but couldn’t really get excitedโ€ฆAs it was much hotter here and the thought of being crammed in the back of a Land Rover really wasnโ€™t doing anything for us today. So what we thought was going to be an anticlimaxโ€ฆTurned out to be the best trip of the whole holiday! Oh and iโ€™d just travelled in my best vehicle of all time! ๐Ÿ˜Žย 

The 1961 Yellow Unimogโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย

Awww friendsโ€ฆ.Let me introduce you to this Yellow, 1961 Unimog…..have you seen the tires, lol! It threw us around like crazy and i still can’t believe that he didn’t slow down for anything. There is no way a vehicle can hit rocks, huge pot holes, climb cracked hills and go around tight bends whilst travelling at break neck speed, it would have destroyed anything else and left them in a pile of spare parts, lol. I’m not sure they issued these with brake pedals! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

ย Bertrand was our fantastic guide, and even better rally driver, lol. He said he had a PHD(pot hole dodger) although he didnโ€™t dodge anything but drove straight over everything which made the ride so much funโ€ฆWe were all hanging on for dear life as our bums were ‘getting airโ€™ as they lifted off our seats!! ย ย 

We ย climbed higher and higher into the Subi Rincon hills, where the amazing yellow Unimog stopped at a set of time-worn Indian caves. This place had lots of rocks to walk over and Bertrand told Sarah โ€œYouโ€™re a fantastic guideโ€ as she was expertly weaving me through the rocks! He told the group how the first explorers crawled through these caves in the pitch black, an inch at a time without knowing what was coming. ๐Ÿ˜จ ย

ย Back on the Unimog…

Bertrand put the ladder in place at the rear of the Unimog so we could climb in and out. I was very careful the first time as i was feeling with my feet to find out how many (and where) the steps were. But after a few times i was flying off them! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย 

He kept slowing down and then (klunck) slamming it into low gear as he climbed ludicrously steep and rocky slopes until we got to a high viewing point. Ikept forgetting it was Sarahโ€™s birthday and not mine! ๐Ÿคฃ ย

ย The Bonaire Donkeyโ€™s…

The Bonaire Donkeys

We were screaming down a dirt track when Bertrand hit the breaks. He jumped out of the Unimog and tried to call out to the Donkeys to see if theyโ€™d come over. He told us:

Donkeys have been around on Bonaire since the 17th century. The Spanish brought the donkeys for transportation. When modern vehicles became available like pushcarts, donkeys were redundant and left to their fate.

Bonaire is a predominantly rugged and arid island, making it difficult for the donkeys to survive. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of donkeys on Bonaire present. Because the donkeys can move freely on the island this regularly leads to traffic accidents.ย 

Fauna ezel thumbThe donkeys live in small herds of about 20 animals and can be 40 years old. During the day they seek the shade of the trees. In the early morning or early evening the donkeys are usually active.

Since 1993 injured, sick and orphaned donkeys are cared in a shelter, called Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire. Volunteers take care over 400 donkeys in a closed area. The shelter is open to visitors and is located south of the airport on the Kaya Ir.R. Statius van Eps.ย 

I heard โ€œEEEYYOOORRREEE, HONK, HONK, HONK) and Bertrand said โ€œOk i hear youโ€ to the donkeys and โ€œThey donโ€™t want to say helloโ€ to us as he climbed back into the Unimog and drove to our next stop…

After another blitzing ride we parked at the beauty spot, Seru Largu. We walked up quite a few steps to get to the top, but it was worth it!

Weโ€™d had a simply breathtaking trip on the fantastic yellow Unimog and we were really sad when we pulled back into the dock.

Back at the ship…๐Ÿ›ณ

After the incredible and mind bending ride in the Unimog, we quickly went on board and had an iced coffee before heading out into the town to see what goodies we could find.

It was absolutely scorching so the first place was a tiny local bar where Bertrand told us to try the locally (and traditionally) ย brewed beer โ€˜Bonaire Blondโ€™. Sarah sat me down at a small table and soon came back with a birthday celebration drinkโ€ฆThe 2 bottles of ice cold Bonaire Blond. The bottles were soon empty as the room was just too hot and we needed to get back outside.ย 

Yay, we managed to buy another bauble for our Christmas treeโ€ฆOh and i bought another bright and colourful shirt that youโ€™ll see at a later date! ๐ŸŽ„ ย ๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย 

The Evening Meal…๐Ÿฝ

ย As we walked into the usual evening restaurant we were guided to our seats. Sarah said โ€œSteve i think weโ€™ve sat somewhere we shouldnโ€™t, it looks much posher here and even the napkins are red instead of whiteโ€. After a few more seconds Sarah continued โ€œOh have you done this? Have you booked me a surprise birthday meal? I bet youโ€™ve done this!โ€ I’d kept quiet so far wondering myself what had happened, and wondering if i should tell Sarah that i had booked a special table for her birthday even though i hadnโ€™t, lol!
ย 
โ€œNo i havnโ€™t booked anything special but i wish i had nowโ€ i said as the waiter brought Sarah the menu. Sarah used the built in magnifier on her iPhone to read the menu aloud โ€œItโ€™s the italian restaurant, youโ€™re going to love thisโ€ โ€œNo way i thought you had to book for this oneโ€ i said wondering if they did Arancini (they did).ย 
ย 
The Italian restaurant was free like the main restaurant, the only difference is that you had to specify that you wanted to eat there which we hadnโ€™t. We still think they knew it was Sarahโ€™s birthday and sat us there without sayingโ€ฆBut we still donโ€™t know and it was a lovely surprise for Sarahโ€™s birthday. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

YAY, Itโ€™s Sarahโ€™s bell from her โ€˜Blind Sightseers Gastronomic Leaderboardโ€™. Moving straight to the top of her โ€˜Dessertsโ€™ leaderboard were the sugar free Profiteroles. Sarah said they tasted amazing and never seen any of these anywhere that were sugar free and didnโ€™t mess her blood sugar up. We told the waiter how good they were and soon the chef came over and chatted to us as we thanked her too! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย Welcome to day 2 of this ‘Tropical Delightsโ€™ cruse. Wow what a colourful place! Letโ€™s see what shore excursion weโ€™re doing today?! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

Discover Curacao Island:ย ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย 

Youโ€™ll get to see two of the islandโ€™s biggest attractions on this tour, starting with a drive past the islandโ€™s salt flats and on to the Hato Caves. They were formed below sea-level and today theyโ€™re full of stalagmites and stalactites.

Next up, weโ€™ll head over to the Chobolo Liqueur Factory, passing the Queen Juliana Bridge on the way. At the factory, youโ€™ll get to see how the islandโ€™s famous Blue Curacao Liqueur is made. The drink is distilled from the dried peel of bitter oranges, and youโ€™ll get to taste it for yourself.

Lastly, youโ€™ll head back to the ship via downtown Willemstad โ€“ you can get dropped off if youโ€™d rather stay and have a look around.ย

On the coach…๐ŸšŒ

After we boarded the coach and met our tour guide, we drove up and over the dock and had a fantastic view of the ship!

Hato cavesโ€ฆโ˜€๏ธ ย 

Leaving the air conditioned coach we walked into a wall of fire (i mean heat) and made our way to the bottom of the steps for the Hato cave. After a steep, difficult and gruelling climb up lots of uneven and twisty steps, we finally made it (super sweaty) to the top which is the mouth of the cave. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ย 

Upon entering the cave we were quickly ensconced with darkness. Our torch could not pierce this blackened world so we stopped, turned around and let other people squeeze past as we walked back out. We told the guide (who was waiting outside) that it was way too dark and dangerous for me and Sarah, so we made our way carefully back down the steps on a tactical withdrawal.ย 

On the plus side, We found a fantastic small yellow cafe which served local coffee. We walked to a table with a beautiful view (and breeze) and it was so quiet with only a handful of locals sipping their drinks and chatting. ๐Ÿ˜€ We heard the group arriving and it wasnโ€™t long before we were back in the coach.ย 

The Chobolo Liqueur Factory…๐Ÿน

Sarah was excited to learn all about the origins of this drink and how it was made, as she and her friend Caroline used to like this drink back in the day! The guide also gave us little testers of each flavour to see which ones we liked and disliked, then we could buy the ones we wanted in the gift shop. Sarah bought a bottle to send to Caroline as sheโ€™s never had one from the actual place before and we thought sheโ€™d love itโ€ฆShe did! ๐Ÿ˜€ย 

Back at the ship…๐Ÿ›ณ

After a lovely iced coffee and quick refresh we thought weโ€™d have a little walk into the town. It was pure midday burning sun and it seemed to take about half an hour just to walk the length of the ship. But we kept going and finally got to the stunning bridge, and knew we were heading in the right direction.ย

This was Sarahโ€™s favourite place as she could gaze upon the vivid colours of the buildings that lined both sides of the dock.

The town…๐ŸŒ‡

We had a little walk around this beautiful town to see what we could find, and first of all we found a clothes shop! โ€œOoohhh i wonder if they sell a caribbean shirt for meโ€ i said as Sarah was trying to find the most colourful section. Sarah then pulled out a fantastic orange and black shirt with Curacao written all over it (see image lower down). โ€œYes iโ€™ll have that oneโ€ i said with a huge smile on my face. Sarah also bought a top with Curacao on the front and we left the shop to find more souvenirs. We didnโ€™t have to wait long as we found another bauble for our Christmas tree, yay! ๐ŸŽ„ ย 

The sun was burning hot and microwaving my bones as i walked round like the ‘Ready Brek’ man causing a heat haze around me. So Sarah stopped at a small bar and got us a bottle of ice cold โ€˜Amstelโ€™.ย 

Thenโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย 

โ€œHOWDY!โ€ Both Sarah and i spun around and faced the american man from yesterday as he continued โ€œOh Sarah, I love your trainers theyโ€™re so colourfulโ€ we said โ€œWow how amazing that youโ€™re here, we thought weโ€™d never see you again. How are you?โ€ He said that his cruise ship had to wait a long time for the big bridge (one weโ€™d just walked over) to lift and let us into the dock, so we arrived a lot later than you. Shortly after his wife turned up and we started chatting for a while, before saying โ€œMaybe weโ€™ll see you tomorrow? I canโ€™t believe youโ€™re here todayโ€. ๐Ÿ˜€

After parting ways (again) we started on the long trek back, but we did get to walk back over the bridge with the colourful buildings, yay! ย

We quickly nipped back to the cabin so i could put on my new shirt, then we walked out on deck as i wanted a photo in Curacao whilst wearing my new Curacao shirt. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย

Thanks for joining me and Sarah on another Birthday celebration cruise and stay in the Caribbean, itโ€™s great to have you guys along for the ride.

Marella Explorer (Apr 2019)โ€ฆ๐Ÿ›ณ ย 

Unbelievably this is the Blind Sightseers 6th cruse! We have never been on the Marella Explorer and Sarah had booked cabin 8001 which is dead centre and right at the front of the ship. She chose this cabin as she thought the views from the window would be fantasticโ€ฆ.Sheโ€™s right again! ๐Ÿ˜Žย 

All it was missing is a steering wheel, lol.

Before getting to Aruba we had a day at sea. We were pleased with this as it gave us time to walk about 80,000 steps to find out where we could get Breakfast and the evening mealโ€ฆBut most of all find the Coffee Port to see if they made lovely strong coffee? They did! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

ย ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ผ Aruba…

As usual we had booked an excursion for each of the 5 islands we were visiting and todays excursion is:ย De Palm Island – Full Day, Aruba.

De Palm Island has got it all. Set adrift off the Aruban coastline, this private reef offers up pristine waters and a huge variety of exotic marine life, itโ€™s a first-class spot for an underwater exploration. Your day will start off with a short boat trip over to the island, where the friendly staff will be waiting to meet you. After a short safety briefing, youโ€™re ready to slip on your mask and wade into the warm, clear waters. Expect to meet friendly blue parrotfish and angelfish. Back on dry land, thereโ€™ll be time to sprawl out on the sand, take your seat for a banana boat ride or visit the islandโ€™s small waterpark before heading back to the ship. Don’t forget that a full buffet lunch and refreshments throughout the day will be included.ย

When booking this shore excursion we had visions of excitement and adventure from the amazingย Xel-Haย island in Mexico, unfortunately this wasnโ€™t like that. This place was tiny in comparison which worked well for us not getting lost but there wasnโ€™t much to do either. The weather was overcast and muggy, until the clouds parted and gave the sun chance to burn a hole through your flesh! ๐Ÿ”ฅย 

I was well impressed by the solid wooden walkways that curled around the whole place, and i marvelled on how long it must have taken to construct this very accessible path. When i was fully sighted i worked as a panel beater in a bodyshop so i know a little about sanding etc. I was enjoying the smoothness of the wood when Sarah pulled me from my reverie…โ€œSteve! Come on stop touching everything to see how smooth it is, lol!โ€ ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

We found the cafe first (funny how that happens) and use it as our starting reference point. We found a souvenir shop (weโ€™ll be back) then the toilets (useful) and passing the bar and food court (Mmmmmm) we stumbled upon the sun bed area. Seeing that all of the sun beds were taken and weโ€™d only just got here, we walked back to the cafe to see if they had iced coffee?! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

Walking around the cafe looking at the assortment of food we suddenly heard an american man with a bright and cheery accent right behind us โ€œHOWDYโ€ Sarah and i turned to face him and he continued โ€œI hope you donโ€™t mind me interrupting? But i saw you have an insulin pump and wanted to ask about itโ€ Sarah talked to him about how long sheโ€™d had Type 1 diabetes and how long sheโ€™d had the pump. The man was a chemist/Pharmacy person and his niece was debating whoever to get one or not? After Sarah talked about how much of a life saver the pump has been i think his niece will be getting one! The man (sorry forgot his name) had arrived on the โ€˜Celebrity Silhouetteโ€™ cruise ship that weโ€™d noticed towering over ours in the dock, and it was also his first time in Aruba, then we finished up our coffees (no iced coffee, just a machine) and parted ways with the lovely man. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย Yayโ€ฆIt was the first time in a while that iโ€™d been able to wear the bright orange shirt i bought in Saint Kitts from our first cruiseโ€ฆRead all about it here.

We quickly figured out that this place was mainly for snorkelers, and that wasnโ€™t an activity the ‘Blind Sightseers’ could do (yes even we have limits, lol). We managed to secure 2 sun bems ( nobody wanted them as they were in the shade) and as i sat down Sarah went to see if she could have a paddle in the sea?! Sarah quickly returned looking sad as theyโ€™re were rocks pretty much all the way round and lots of โ€˜Beware of Jellyfishโ€™ signs. More clouds came and lowered the temperature so we walked into the food court place as it was lunchtime already. ย 

Yayโ€ฆI was happy as they were mainly serving burger and chips (well french fries which are fake chips) and Sarah said they served salad too! ๐Ÿคฃ Once again (like the sun beds) every table was taken except the only one in the blistering sun no-one wantedโ€ฆSo we sat down and i placed my โ€˜Tactical sun hatโ€™ on my frying head and enjoyed the burger, although i wasnโ€™t sure which one of us was barbecued, lol! ย ๐Ÿ” ย โ˜€๏ธ ย ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

โ€œHOWDYโ€ the man said whilst walking past, i said to Sarah โ€œI donโ€™t have to ask who that was as his accent is fantasticโ€ as we waved in his general direction. As Sarah and i canโ€™t make eye contact itโ€™s almost impossible to make friends or start a conversation unless people come over to us. So it felt great to make a friend here who always says โ€œHowdyโ€ when seeing us! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

Sarah & i had a great time wondering around this beautiful little island and we found lots of little places until stumbling intoโ€ฆ.The gift shop! We love to find souvenirs that help us remember the amazing journeys/adventures we have conquered, and Sarah bought a fantastic t-shirt with “Biba Dushiโ€ written on the front. Biba dushi in Aruba means โ€œliving the sweet lifeโ€. The language is actually called Papiamento and is one of Arubaโ€™s two official languages spoken by many on the island. Papiamento is a Creole language derived from Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, French, and African languages.

After another fun ride on the little boat back to the ship, we had enough time to get changed, leave our bags and have a well needed iced-coffee before heading out to explore as much as we can without getting lost before the ship leaves.

We walked up one street and turned right before Sarah stopped and said โ€œWow, that lady is having her photo taken in front of that cool wall art/sign. Quick get one of meโ€ โ€œOk my lovely, youโ€™re wearing your new yellow Michael Kors t-shirt too, i hope i get everything inโ€. Sarah had bought this t-shirt for our holidays and couldnโ€™t wait to put on the lovely bright colours and flowers.

Walking back to the ship we finally found a local Bauble makerโ€ฆHer daughter makes and paints them herself. We bought a beautiful one which even had a cruise ship painted on with the Aruba island and even 2019 on it. ๐ŸŽ„ ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

We’ve started collecting Christmas Tree Baubles since i started going abroad 5 years ago. We love unpacking them at Christmas and filling the tree with all ย of the places we visit. We think its a lovely idea to fill the tree with our lives journeys and give thanks to God for everything.

Sarah & i like to share a table with other passengers, mainly to take this opportunity to try and be sociable( being blind and trapped in your very small world & not having any eye contact itโ€™s almost impossible to be sociable. or start conversations). So asking someone to read the menu for you because we are blind is a great ice breaker, lol!ย 

We met 2 lovely couples that night and you will hear a little more about them throughout this trip.

It was amazing to have my friend of nearly 30 years Adie join our “Hard As Nails” team. I thought we’d sit and catch up over a coffee….I didn’t have this in mind, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ ย

After jogging a little, we came to thisโ€ฆโ€ฆ.

“At over 2 stories high, this is one of the most impressive obstacles in the UK. It is a giant A-shaped cargo net that you and your team will have to scramble up and over it. Working together will be the only way to overcomeโ€.

This was easily my favourite obstacle of the day as i could get my hands on it. Also it’s where my new trainers just hooked perfectly around the rope and it felt completely solid.

My blindness helped me out for once as i couldnโ€™t see how high i was climbing and scrambling over the top. I heard a lot of fear from other people and a few of them froze going up and were glued to the spot. ๐Ÿ˜จ

ย Thenโ€ฆ.When getting to the bottom i hear โ€œYay, Whoop Whoop, Steve, Steve, Steveโ€ and the sound of the plastic clapper hands were going crazy! What a feeling to know my lovely Wife Sarah and the Crazy Clappers team were cheering me all of the way, a great feeling! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

More joggingโ€ฆ.Adie and the team were excellent at guiding me when jogging. Moving low hanging branches, telling me of tree roots and pulling me in the right direction. Adie said โ€œI tried running with my eyes closed for a few stepsโ€ฆAnd there is no way iโ€™d try any of this if i couldnโ€™t seeโ€.

โ€œWe’ve taken the 10′ Hero Walls and tilted them right at you. By removing the ability for you to climb up and over this wall, you will have to form a strategy with your team, work together and boost each other to the other sideโ€.

Time to get swinging. Grab on, hold tight, feel the momentum and swing yourself from ring to ring like a regular Tarzan. This obstacle will test your strength, coordination and flow. Hang in there, you got thisโ€.

“One of the most teamwork-inducing obstacles in the Tough Mudder portfolio, this obstacle is difficult to complete alone. You’re going to have to work together to form a human pyramid and, like its namesake, climb up and over your fellow Mudders on the way to the topโ€.

As Vini was making everything look so easyโ€ฆ..It was great to look at the photos afterwards and see it wasnโ€™t all too easy and he had to struggle too!! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿคฃ ย

I knew this was going to be difficult for me as i needed to try it and get hands on before i could calculate what exactly i needed to do. Adie and Ashley kindly explained the processโ€ฆ.But i knew i just had to do it before i would really knowโ€ฆ.As running at a half pipe wall thingy when blind is going to be interesting!

I thought iโ€™d feel the incline of the ramp and know roughly where i needed to jump and reach out for the top. But i took 1 step too manyโ€ฆ.And before i knew it the hard wall was in my face! ๐Ÿค•ย

After hitting the wall i dropped down hard on both knees, and as the obstacle was made of hardish tyre rubber, it simply burned and ripped the skin off both kneesโ€ฆ.”Wow that stings!”

Time to regroup and recalculate! I could sense the crowd went very quiet, and i heard a couple of people wonder how iโ€™m going to get up there?

“Ok Steve, just do the same (not the face plant and flesh stripping knee thing) but with 1 step lessโ€. Here i go again! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

The team were fantastic and we all made it up. No-one was being left behind and you could just feel the team growing closer with each obstacle, it was amazing.

Wow what a journey!ย 

First…Iโ€™d like to give a stupendous amount of thanks to my lovely Wife Sarahโ€ฆ.The amount of love and encouragement was mind-blowing! This is our last full day before we have to fly home. ๐Ÿ˜ญย Weโ€™re going to miss this view! ย

ย We had our penultimate breakfast (yes sausagesโ€ฆI mean fruit) and i was wearing my new โ€˜Birthdayโ€™ t-shirt. Sarah had seen it in the little gift shop (on site) and knew she just had to get it for me. It says โ€œDonโ€™t sweat the small stuffโ€ and has a surf board with a large bite mark out of the side, it also has Barbados written on itโ€ฆFantastic! Sarah was wearing her โ€˜World Cancer Research Fundโ€™ t-shirt which is the charity she works for, and itโ€™s the reason for my impending doomโ€ฆLet me explain…

The Blindman Tough Mudder!ย ๐Ÿค” ย 

People who know me?! know that Iโ€™ve been struggling and fighting all kinds of obstacles for the past 18 years since being registered blindโ€ฆ..BUT Iโ€˜ve never faced obstacles such as these.

I was recently challenged (strong-armed) to do the Tough Mudder 5K by Sarahโ€™s nail tech/artist Ashley, who works at Ooh La La Hair & Beauty Salon. I chose the team name ‘HARD AS NAILSโ€™ and I’ll be competing and raising funds for one of my favourite charities ย -World Cancer Research Fund

My lovely wife Sarah works forย World Cancer Research Fundย and I was stopped in my tracks by one of the statistics she showed me – That 40% of cancer cases are preventable ….that’s around 147,000 cases each year in the UK alone. And that after not smoking eating a healthy diet, being more active and maintaining a healthy weight are the most important things you can do to reduce your cancer risk. This totally blew my mind!

โ€œWhat??? There are cancers that I can prevent? I thought cancer was something that you just got!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑย 

The light switched on for me and I thought โ€œWhy didnโ€™t I know this?ย 

I want to share this good news with everyone so we can all be aware and empowered to start fighting the cancers we can prevent.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ย 

Since then Iโ€™ve been following World Cancer Research Fundsย recommendationsย and have never felt more healthy and energised (even though Iโ€™m on beta-blockers). Most of all I know Iโ€™m helping to not dig my own grave with my own knife and fork!

Can a blindman do a ‘Tough Mudderโ€™โ€ฆ?ย (post coming tomorrow!)

Now itโ€™s time to spend our last full day on the immensely packed beach! ๐Ÿคฃ ย โ˜€๏ธ ย

ย After our 1st wave (see what i did there, lol) of beach fun it was time for a cool down, but first i had to try and get Sarah off the beach. ๐Ÿคฃ ย

ย Just as iโ€™d gotten comfortable in the shadeโ€ฆโ€Steve letโ€™s play some crazy golf! I bet you canโ€™t beat me, lol!โ€ Not another challenge! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ย ย

This hotel and beach club was just fantastic for us as there were no steps to trip us up. Walking out of our roomโ€ฆThe main swimming pool was about 10 meters away, the restaurant/bar was about 20-30 meters away, and the crazy golf course was about 30 meters and just around the back of the hotel in the beautiful grounds. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย We were happy straight away as the course had a lighthouse obstacleโ€ฆSarah loves lighthouses and we stayed in the โ€˜Old Hunstanton Lighthouseโ€™ for our honeymoon and then for the following 5 anniversaries! ๐Ÿ˜€ โค๏ธย 

We didnโ€™t have the course to ourselves as there were also some children playing, this really helped us out when Sarah did her ‘Happy Gilmore’ impression and smashed the ball off the course and into a load of bushes! The children (who were a lot smaller kindly returned Sarahโ€™s ball as they could fit under the bushes! ๐Ÿคฃ ย

We had no idea whoโ€™d wonย the game as we were having too much fun!ย ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

ย Back to the beach…

As the hotel is great and accessible for usโ€ฆThe empty beach was fantastic. When youโ€™re registered blind you hardly ever get to walk freely without millions of obstacles coming at you from every angle. So once Sarah plonked me by the sea and said itโ€™s safe to just walk up and down and follow the edge of the sea, i got moving. Itโ€™s a freedom i never ever thought about when i was fully sighted but now i love these brief moments!

ย After spending lots of time playing in the shallow water and being splashed (blasted) by the waves, we walked as far as we could along the bay (east), then we walked all the way back to Sarahโ€™s favourite placeโ€ฆThe rocks (west). You may recognise this place as the sunset location, as this is the place we always come to every night to capture a sunset. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย It was a beautiful place to stop and listen to the sound of the waves crashing and to sit ย (or stand) in reverie.ย 

Well now thatโ€™s out of the way itโ€™s time to try and catch up with Sarah. I really need to take more video clips as the auto focus isnโ€™t fast enough to keep up with Sarah, lol!ย

ย Weโ€™ve had such an amazing time staying at the Southern Palms Beach Club, playing on Dover beach and enjoying Barbados! So i thought there would be no better way to leave this place as to let the beautiful Bajan sun set on our holiday. ๐Ÿ˜€ย

Good morning friends! Yay weโ€™re still at the ๐ŸŒดย Southern Palms ๐ŸŒดย

โ€œWow, how nice are these bananas with a little fresh orange juice drizzled over them!โ€ i said as Sarah puts some fresh water melon next to me. โ€œWhat a way to start the day, they taste so much fruitier and juicier than back homeโ€. Sarah loved going over to the numerous tables and getting fresh fruit, nuts and best of allโ€ฆThe coconut bread! We then walked over to the cooked food table where we ordered our fresh omelettes.๐ŸŒ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ‰๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿฅฅ

But then…

DINGโ€ฆDINGโ€ฆDINGโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜‹ย 

Yayโ€ฆThatโ€™s the sound of my (not Sarahโ€™s) โ€˜Blind Sightseers Gastronomic Leaderboardโ€™ bell again. This time it was for the nicest sausages iโ€™ve ever tasted. I have no idea what herbs and spices they used but itโ€™s right up at number 1 for sausages! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

After being dragged (kicking and screaming) away from the sausages, we had a monumental walk back to our room (about 30 meters) as Sarah wanted to go for a swim. The pool was fantastic and not very busy! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย

ย There was always a cold fresh jug of water (with cucumber or lemon) available under an umbrella for guests to drink. It was a life saver for me who just boils to death the second i leave the air conditioned room. Being sat under an umbrella next to the pool, hearing Sarah splashing around and having fun with the view over the beach (see image below)โ€ฆIt wasnโ€™t the worst place to be, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ โ˜€๏ธ ย ย

Sitting still is not the usual Blind Sightseers way of doing things but suddenly ย i heard an airplane pretty close to us. I just pointed my phone towards the noise and i didnโ€™t expect to capture anything, but to my surprise i managed to get the plane. My ears must be well calibrated! ๐Ÿคฃ ย

ย Sharkeyโ€™s Tropical Cafeโ€ฆโ˜• ย 

ย You may remember from my ‘Barbados #1‘ post that weโ€™d had a walk up the โ€˜Gap’ from our hotel to explore. We walked past Sharkeyโ€™s and thought weโ€™d try it another dayโ€ฆWell now we are here! ๐Ÿ˜€ We absolutely loved the incredibly bold and vivid colour scheme and it wasnโ€™t long before weโ€™d sat down and had our iced coffees. We chatted with the man (making the coffees) and when he found out Sarah was diabetic he said โ€œHey, i can make a special one for you! Itโ€™s good that you told me as nobody dies on my watch, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

Just when i thought this place couldnโ€™t get any brighterโ€ฆSarah hits me with that amazing smile! ย

ย The Birthday Bajan Braides…

As we were on a ‘Full Day Island Tour’ yesterday, we didnโ€™t have time to book Sarah into the on site hairdressers to get her birthday ย braides. As you may know the wind here is quite strong (and cooling) so i already had my hair in braides, as itโ€™s my birthday 4 days after Sarahโ€™s. It was the same lady whoโ€™d done my braides and Sarah looked fantastic! ๐Ÿ˜€ โค๏ธย

ย The evening…

Weโ€™d already had another lovely day but it was time for the evening meal. The hotel had a different band playing every few nights, and sitting in the restaurant next to the perfect postcard beach was stunning. ย

Yes you know what this meansโ€ฆItโ€™s my โ€˜Blind Sightseers Gastronomic Leaderboardโ€™ and something has just smashed itโ€™s way to the top, i wonder what it could be??

This one isnโ€™t for the faint hearted but i donโ€™t have enough hyperbole to do this justice! So iโ€™ll just introduce you to my favourite burger of all timeโ€ฆThe โ€˜Southern Burgerโ€™ This is hard to write about without drooling. ๐Ÿ˜€ I must confess that i ordered this on the first night and then for all 7 nights! Once youโ€™ve hit the top thereโ€™s nowhere else to go! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ” ย ย

Thankfully we walked along the beach for the sunset before we had the evening meal. We always knew exactly what time to leave for our daily beach sunset walk as the ‘Bajan Whistling Frogโ€™ would start singing at the same time every night! ๐Ÿ˜€ย 

๐ŸŒด The โ€™Southern Palmsโ€™ and Barbados was already our fave place and island and weโ€™d not even been here a week. As the sun set on another fantastic day i wanted to leave you with this stunning view. ย

Wow what a view to start your Bajan Birthday whilst eating an amazing fresh and juicy breakfast. ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ‰ ๐ŸŠ ๐Ÿ‡ย ๐Ÿฅ“ We couldโ€™ve stayed here foreverโ€ฆBut we have a fantastic birthday trip starting in a moment! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย The Barbados 360 Island Tour is a great way to see BarbadosYour incredible experience begins with pick-up at your hotel by a friendly local guide/driver.

Southern Palmsโ€ฆ๐ŸŒด

We didnโ€™t even have to leave the hotel as the coach pulled right up to the entrance. We were one of the first on the coach and it was nice to get the chance to see the other hotels as the driver stopped to pick the other people up.

Bridgetown…

You’ll be driven through our bustling capital city of Bridgetown which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here the architecture and charm of a bygone era merges with the beauty of a modern city.

The tour guide told us lots of history as we drove through Bridgetown. It looked (and sounded) fantastic and itโ€™s a definite place for us to go and explore at a later date! ๐Ÿ˜€ย 

Speightstown…

And speaking of lovely architecture and colonial towns, your first stop is at Speightstown. Here you’ll enjoy seeing historic buildings and beautiful tropical beaches.

The tour guide kept talking about the PRC Bakery at our first stop, and said she was going in to get something for the trip. โ€œOOohhhh maybe we could get a small cake for your birthdayโ€ โ€œYes letโ€™s follow her and see what goodies they have?โ€ As we walked in to the little bakery the guide said โ€œOh yes a lead pipeโ€ as she picked one up and went to pay for it. โ€œWhatโ€™s a lead pipe?โ€ i said to the guide โ€œItโ€™s a local cake but it can be used as a weapon too as itโ€™s very heavyโ€. Sarah then passed me a bag with a cake in and said hold this โ€œWow this weighs about the same as a 16lb bowling ballโ€ โ€œeverything is so heavy in here, nothing has fluffy cream like in England as it would melt instantly, lolโ€.

Sarah told the baker that we loved coconut and did e have anything with coconut in them? We only got 1 coconut slice as we didnโ€™t know how sweet it was or even if we liked it?! ๐Ÿ˜€ย

DINGโ€ฆDINGโ€ฆDINGโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜‹ ย ย 

I never (ever) stop talking about this coconut slice as itโ€™s the nicest cake iโ€™ve ever tasted! The bell on the โ€˜Blind Sightseers Gastronomic Leaderboardโ€™ was destroyed as this flew to the top of the cakes list! If iโ€™d have known i wouldโ€™ve stayed in the bakery and continued to eat every single last one of them! But we only had that one and weโ€™ve never been able to go back since this monumental occasion. Oh yesโ€ฆThis monumental occasion is my lovely wife Sarah’s birthday! ๐Ÿคฃย

ย โ€œIf i can just break this cake in to small pieces then i could hide it in my pockets. Iโ€™m sure this cake is too sweet for Sarah and she just wonโ€™t like it!โ€ ๐Ÿคฃ ย

A kind person from our group asked if weโ€™d like a birthday photo together? Iโ€™m sure she must have noticed us fighting over the coconut slice, and thought sheโ€™d better break us up, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ ย

But itโ€™s not my birthday and it was time for us to get back on the coach.

North point and Saint Lucy…

After a short drive we ended up at North Point, the most northern part of Barbados. Instead of flat sandy beaches this place had cliffs and big waves. But first Sarah had to have her photo taken with Saint Lucy. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย

ย We walked inside the cafe/bar area as we had enough time for a cold drink, and then lots of noise and singingโ€ฆIt was the tour guide and a few of the staff singing Happy Birthday (stevie wonder style) bouncing and dancing around whilst carrying a bowl of flying fish with a sparkler sticking out of the top! It was a special moment for Sarah and weโ€™ve never had anything like this before, a lovely thing for them to do. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

It was an amazing place and totally different to the postcard beaches weโ€™re used to at our hotel. โ˜€๏ธ

Bathsheba & the soup bowl…ย 

Next you travel along that coastline to the seaside village at Bathsheba, to see fascinating rock formations standing strong against the battering waves. You might also see surfers enjoying the white surf of the world famous “Soup Bowl”.

ย This place was beautiful and wild and also very different from the normal beaches. Just before we arrived at the next location our driver treated us by singing (with a great voice) โ€œAll of meโ€ by John Legend. Every time we hear this song playing it takes us back to this stunning place! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย โ˜€๏ธ ย 

ย Sunbury Plantation House…ย 

By now you might be feeling a bit hungry, so it’s off to Sunbury Plantation House, for a delicious local buffet lunch and a tour of this beautifully restored historic home.

Wow what a place packed with so much history. We had a short walk around looking at the antiques then sat down for a stunning buffet birthday lunch. We tried an omnifarious amount of local foods and it was so tasty! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

After enjoying the beauty of nature it’s time to visit St. Johns Church, a gothic Church that boasts amazing views from its hilltop location.ย 

ย This was the last stop on our epic tour of the island and it was beautiful. ย

After a long day filled with excitement, surprises and beautiful scenery, the coach pulled up outside our hotel. We said our goodbyes and headed back to our room.

And thenโ€ฆ๐Ÿ™Œ ย 

As we opened the door to our room we were greeted with this lovely surprise for Sarahโ€™s birthday from the hotel staff.๐Ÿ˜€ ย ย

ย Good morning friends! Yay weโ€™re in Barbados! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย โ˜€๏ธย ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ง ย 

After our relaxing breakfast (no excursion today) we had a couple of hours on the ship. We were excited not to be flying home as usual but to be staying a week on Barbados. Weโ€™ve never done a cruise and stay before so had no idea what to expect. But while we are waitingโ€ฆHow about a game of blind crazy golf? ๐Ÿคฃ ย  ย ย

ย We made sure there wasnโ€™t many people playing as i take too long on a shot. I canโ€™t see my feet never mind a golf ball, lol! To take a shot i bend down and place the ball on the floor while holding the club against it. Then slowly rise up whilst at the same time trying not to move the club or the ball at all. Hopefully the wind hasnโ€™t blown my ball away from the club (happened a few times as i swung and just hit air) then i swing. If i make contact with the ball itโ€™s a bonus, but sometimes i just fluke a hole in one! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ย

ย After a very hot round of crazy golf (i think Sarah won) and a farewell iced coffee it was time for us to leave this lovely ship.ย

ย After a short ride in a minibus with the driver telling us some great places to visit if we get the chance, we pulled up a the hotel. We were welcomed by a steel drum band and Sarah just had to get a video of this place! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย  ย

Once weโ€™d been shown around our room with lovely air conditioning, we unpacked our case and went for a little walk round which included the beach. โ˜€๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜€ย

ย We couldnโ€™t believe how empty the beach was and had a walk up and down up to the limits of our hotel (the hotel was wider than we’d thought) and there were not many people on the beach at all. We walked around the whole bay (which wasnโ€™t very big) and there were more people on the beach in front of the next hotel down, but hardly any in front of our hotel..Excellent. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

As the Southern Palms faced directly south we headed right along the beach so i could find a lovely sunset photo, i knew the sunsets must be amazing here so wondered where we could stand to get one?! Wow i think this looks like the place! We couldnโ€™t believe it as this place was about 50 meters from our hotel, and it was the end of the bay so we couldnโ€™t walk any further anyway. Sarah quickly found her new โ€˜Happy Place’ on the top of the rocks.ย ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

ย It was beautiful and we stayed as long as we could before it got too dark for us. It had rocks, coastline and trees for composition and we were happy to come here for the next 7 days! ย

ย We knew instantly that this place was something special and weโ€™d love itโ€ฆAnd i havnโ€™t even mentioned the evening meals yet!! Oh the โ€˜Blind Sightseers Gastronomic Leaderboardโ€™ is going to get busy! More about that on a later date. ย 

The following day…

We had breakfast and evening meal included at the hotel, and wow what a breakfast (tell you later!) So when weโ€™d filled our tanks we headed out of the hotel for a short walk. As the hotel was located on St Lawrence Gap we thought even if we get lost, someone would always know about the gap and take us home, good plan.ย

It was scorching hot (and then some) but there was a sprinkling of stalls, shops and cafe/bars along the gap, so i could stand underneath in the boiling hot shade, lol! Then walking further along the gap we found (which is now) our favourite and most colourful cafe…โ€˜Sharkeyโ€™s Tropical Cafeโ€.ย

ย We didnโ€™t have time to stop at the moment as we were on exploration mode. The gap then turned 90หš to the right until we hit the main road. We knew we could just turn back and get back the way we came, but weโ€™d read about the legendary public buses and wanted to try one!ย 

The busโ€ฆ๐ŸšŒ ย 

Wow, let me tell you a little about the bus! Remember how i was telling you about my favourite cars of all time back inย Corsica, yes the insanely fast โ€˜Group Bโ€™ rally carsโ€ฆWell when weโ€™d walked along the main road a little, on some tiny paths that took some navigatingโ€ฆOne of these blasted past (i enjoyed the breeze,lol). โ€œWow that was closeโ€ i said whilst trying to sort my shirt out as it had been blown violently around. Climbing on board one of these missiles (it was heading the way of another coffee shop iโ€™d found on Facebook) the first thing that we noticed was the noise! It had a hugely loud raspy exhaust (like Group B cars) and it only accelerated hard and fast. There were no cruising and just hard braking for anyone else brave enough to get on. It took us about 7 seconds (maybe 10 minutes) before we could breathe again and the g-force came down to normal and we could step off.

It stopped right outside the โ€˜Victoria Coffee Shopโ€™ and we were greeted with this fantastic sign as we walked inโ€ฆI canโ€™t remember what it said though, lolโ€ฆMaybe a super kind reader could enter the text in the comment section below?! ๐Ÿ˜€ย

ย The coffee shop was beautiful and we had a lovely strong coffee with some local banana bread, Mmmmm. ย ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย After another dizzying blast on the rocket fuelled bus we managed to get back to the hotel after a good time exploring. Sarah said (i think sheโ€™d seen my hair after the bus ride) โ€œShall we book you in to get your hair braided as the hotel has itโ€™s own hair salon?โ€ My hair did look like a cross between โ€˜Aslanโ€™ and โ€˜Worzel Gummidgeโ€™ so i was happy to get it out of the way for a whole week! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย  ย

ย The lady did a fantastic job and we had a great time chatting to her and learning more about Barbados.

Sarahโ€™s Birthday in Barbados…

Tomorrow will be Sarahโ€™s birthday and weโ€™ve booked an excursion that will take us all around the island, showing us the different coastlines of this beautiful place. Weโ€™re really looking forward to it and canโ€™t wait to share Sarahโ€™s birthday with you in Barbados. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ง ๐Ÿ˜€ ย  ย

ย Good morning friends and welcome to Grenada! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

ย Sarahโ€™s really looking forwards to Grenada and visiting the nutmeg factory, she loves nutmeg! It reminds her of lovely memories of her even lovelier nan, and the beautiful smell of her legendary rice pudding.

After yesterdaysย postย (short story) i thought weโ€™d have a lovely gentle coach rideโ€ฆWhat can go wrong, lol! ๐Ÿคฃ ย ย 

Where are we going todayโ€ฆ๐Ÿค” ย 

All cinnamon, cloves and allspice, itโ€™s little wonder Grenadaโ€™s known as the Caribbeanโ€™s Spice Island. But theyโ€™re not the only treats that grow here. Thereโ€™s plenty of citrus, bananas and cocoa beans too. In fact, the menu of plants that call this place home reads like the ingredients for a Nigella recipe, so itโ€™s easy to see how this place came to be one of the worldโ€™s leading spice suppliers.

Youโ€™ll wind through the rainforest to the Grand Etang Lake viewing point. A giant volcano crater filled to the brim with cobalt water, itโ€™s certainly easy on the eye. And its volcano-top location makes it all the more breathtaking. From here, youโ€™ll travel to Annandale Falls, a fairytale paradise of cascading water, hanging ferns and dainty orchids thatโ€™s like a secret Caribbean garden. Then itโ€™s of to the nutmeg factory!

Wow you can smell the lovely warm spices even from the dock! Oh and what a beautiful place! ๐Ÿ˜€ย

ย We boarded our air conditioned coach and met our guide who was very knowledgable about the history of this incredible island. The first thing we noticed is just how green it was. Massive fruit and all kinds of food just grew along the roadside, it was just lush with life! It wasnโ€™t long before we were getting off the coach for our first stop of the day. ย ย

Sarahย expertly guided me down steep paths and large steps to get down to the waterfallโ€ฆAnd it was totally worth it. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย Wow i really hoped you could feel how fresh and cool it was when stepping nearer this waterfall, i couldโ€™ve stayed there all day but itโ€™s back to the coach.ย

Every time we stepped off the coach we were greeted with the amazing smell of the spices, and walking through the national park there were a few stalls where we could finally buy some! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

It was so beautiful up here.ย

ย Back on the coachโ€ฆ๐ŸšŒ ย 

We were driving past many nutmeg trees when the coach slowed and came to a stop and the guide jumped out, picked something and jumped back on the coach.ย 

He held up the freshly picked spice and told us all about the nutmeg and itโ€™s various uses, he was showing us their yellow apricot-sized fruits, that were often split open, showing the red mace covering the hard-shelled nut with the seed inside. He also told us that Grenada is one of the biggest producers of this spice in the world, after Indonesia from whose Banda islands this nut originates.ย 

The coach then pulled away and we had a beautiful scenic drive until we reached the nutmeg factory. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย Wowโ€ฆWhat a delight for the senses! The wonderful aroma ensconced us as we walked into the factory and it never let us go until we were back on the coach.

We were shown and told all about the process from farming to distribution around the world. The ladies were smiling (some even singing) which gave a lovely feel to the place. My favourite part was the snapping and popping of the used shells under our feet, it was so loud. The guide told us that not even the shells are wasted as locals put them on their paths and around their gardens so they know if someone (or something) is coming!

This nutmeg factory industry is an essential part of the island economy and it’s gratifying to contribute in some small way to its continuance.

The shop…ย 

At the end we went to a souvenir shop, where nutmeg products are sold in all kinds of forms, from powder and jams to syrups. Most of our group were already on the coach and we only had a few minutes. It smelt amazing and we wanted to take everything. Sarah bought an incredible smelling cream then we rushed back on to the coach.

We later found out the Sarah had bought an insect repellent โ€œNo way i thought it was a moisturising creamโ€ฆBut it smells so amazing!โ€ We used it lots but made sure to save some as it really does smell incredible! ๐Ÿ˜€ย

Back on the shipโ€ฆ๐Ÿ›ณ ย 

I was happy for the refresh as the plaster on my leg (from yesterday) wouldnโ€™t stick as i was so hot my legs felt they had custard drooling down them. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

Well weโ€™ve sadly made it (mostly intact) ย to the end of another cruise (Seven Isles Cruise) but the adventure doesnโ€™t stop here! This is the first week of our 2 week cruise and stay, so tomorrow we head for Barbados. We are staying for a week at โ€˜Southern Palms Beach Clubโ€™ and hope to meet with you there! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย

ย Bonjour mes amisย (Good Morning My Friends) and welcome to Martinique!ย 

Sorry but Sarah & i didnโ€™t managed to take any photos at all on the very wet shore excursion. Yes even i was in my wet gear (last time ever Sarah has commanded) and we had no water proof cameras. But this is a must read and a gripping drama of an adventure weโ€™ll never forget! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย 

Side noteโ€ฆAlthough itโ€™s called a post itโ€™s actually more like a short story. So settle back with your favourite beverage and enjoy the drama! ๐Ÿ˜จ ย

Kayaking Mangroves Martinique…๐Ÿ›ถ

Had your fill of sunbathing and swimming? This is one for the more active crowd. Youโ€™ll first travel to a nearby islet to pick up your kayaks. And with paddles at the ready, youโ€™ll head off into the quiet mangroves. Youโ€™ll be in the water about 40 minutes, gliding under tropical canopies. And red and black mangrove trees sprout from the water. Guides are on hand to make sure you get the most out of the day and help you perfect your technique. Plus thereโ€™s plenty of time to chill with a fruit juice, or swim in the sea before taking the boat back to the ship.

On the dock and boarding the boatโ€ฆ๐Ÿ›ณ ย 

After another lovely breakfast we left the ship and joined our excursion guide on the dock. We stood waiting for a while and started talking to a lovely man and his grandson who he was taking on our trip. When the man knew i was registered blind and still kayaking and swimming he seemed to relax a little. Yay i can help without helping! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

We were then guided onto a small fun boat, it had a totally flat and wide floor (like a dance floor) so was easy for me to get on. We took our seats around the edge of the boat and it pulled away bobbing across the sea. The cool sea breeze flowed briskly through the boat (which i enjoyed) and before long we were pulling up to a small islet from what seemed like a beautiful film set!. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Sarah unplugged her insulin pump and stored it safe in our bags that weโ€™d left on the boat, then we stepped off the boat and after a short lesson on kayaking we were ready to get in.ย 

The kayak and the mangrovesโ€ฆโ˜€๏ธ ย 

ย As this was the second time weโ€™d tried kayaking (1st time in Mexico) we thought we knew what to expect. Sarah climbed in the back seat and i sat in the front waiting for the navigator (Sarah) to direct. The guide took us across the open sea and we swiftly pulled into line about half way up the group. We were kayaking across the open Caribbean sea and it was incredible, itโ€™s such a lovely feeling being out in the open sea. Then we started to turn towards the mangroves. The group pulled in tight as we made our way along the stunning narrow waterway.ย 

Thenโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜จ ย 

I heard a commotion a head of me and a screaming/shouting. As we pulled nearer a woman had fallen in and her husband was still in the kayak trying to help her. The woman was freaking out and on the verge of hysterics and could not be reasoned with. As a side noteโ€ฆDuring our boat ride from the ship the guides showed the group huge photos (about A3) of the omnifarious types of creatures out there including huge crabs that lay on the floor and the sides of the mangroves, and i think the woman had those photos still etched in her mind. Sarah said the woman was up to her shoulders in water and couldnโ€™t get back in to the kayak. Her paddle had hit the side of our kayak so we stopped to give her support and save her paddle for when she gets back in. ๐Ÿ˜จ ย 

ย With the woman safely back in the kayak (she was fuming) the group continued along the amazing mangroves until we stopped for a rest before heading further along for about 20 minutes until it opened back out in to the Caribbean sea. Now we could test the top speed as we flew back to the little dock thingy. I wouldnโ€™t say our kayaking always went smoothly and we have had a few crossed paddles along the way, but we had fun and made it back. ๐Ÿคฃ ย 

The boat and the short beach breakโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ย 

ย We sat back down on the boat (tired) after a fantastic kayak trip and the guide said โ€œItโ€™s about half an hour until we get to the beach, so relax and come and have a fresh cold drink at the bar area at the front of the boat. I said to Sarah โ€œThat was the Blind Sightseers 2nd kayak trip and we made it without sinking or capsizing againโ€ โ€œYeah i knowโ€ Sarah said very slowly and quite slurry. At firs i thought she was just tired as it took a lot out of us with all of the paddling, and how could it be a hypo as she hasnโ€™t had her pump attached? But i said โ€œAre you ok?โ€ If it is a hypo then i need to hear her speak so i know it is for definite. โ€œI think iโ€™m having a hypo?!โ€ Sarah said as she looked at her pump to clarify the very low reading. I knew Sarah really wanted to enjoy the beach we were heading towards but this was going to be a big hypo! ๐Ÿ˜จ ย 

I jumped up and headed for the juice bar and asked for any full sugar orange juice if they had any? They did and Sarah was just with it enough to be able to drink itโ€ฆNow we wait to see if the sugar kicks in or Sarah passes out. I do not enjoy this bit at all, but i just think about how Sarah must be feeling and stop complaining! The music on the boat was loud, the people were chatting away while i was trying to keep Sarah sat upright. About 15 minutes had passed and the juice wasnโ€™t really working, so i got up and asked for another one. I knew Sarah really wanted to go on the beach and would be upset if she missed it, but i also knew sheโ€™d be absolutely freezing after this hypoโ€ฆThe T1Dโ€™s who read this will know exactly what iโ€™m talking about, the bone chill that happens is like your bone themselves are frozen and the only way to get warm again is to have a hot bath.ย 

With about 5 minutes to go Sarahโ€™s speech became much more normal again and she asked if weโ€™d already been to the beach. โ€œNot yet my love, we are about 5 minutes away but we can just stay on the boat where itโ€™s safeโ€ I said with my arm around Sarah trying to get her warm. โ€œNo way itโ€™s freezing on here and itโ€™s in the shade, at least the beach will be in the sun and i can warm upโ€ โ€œGood thinkingโ€ i said as people were getting ready to leave the boat. โ€œHang onโ€ i said as i heard a couple of people splash into the water โ€œIt sounds like we are not on landโ€ โ€œNo weโ€™re not, we are in a beautiful film set looking place but the beach island is a long way over thereโ€ The guide said we have about half an hour until the boat sounds itโ€™s 1st of 2 horns then you have a few minutes to get back on board, the guide continued You can swim over to the ย beach if you want to as we have permission to use the bar there etc but make sure youโ€™re back on the boat shortly after the 1st horn blastโ€. Sarah said โ€œThe sea should be warmer than being trapped in here and lots of people are getting off so we can have a swim over to the island and get warmโ€ โ€œSounds like a plan, letโ€™s goโ€.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ ย 

The sea and the island…๐Ÿ

Sarah guided me to the back of the boat and there were steps leading down to the sea. โ€œSteve you can sit on the bottom step and then push yourself offโ€ โ€œWhich way is the beach?โ€ Sarah pointed at a 90หš angle to her right โ€œOk thanks if i canโ€™t tread water iโ€™ll head that way until i hit landโ€, here goes…

As i slid off the last step i went straight under and started to sink like a stone. At the same time salt water filled my lungs as i panicked and i seemed to stop breathing. I kicked my legs and frantically thrust my arms in a a swimming motion with little effectโ€ฆAt first. More water filled my mouth and lungs and finally my head poked out of the water. I think the panic of drowning was overtaking me as i couldnโ€™t keep my head above water long enough to spit out all of the salt water. Treading water was out of the question but if i swam i seemed to stay on top. I only know 2 swimming strokes Breast stroke and doggy paddle (doggy paddle really wouldnโ€™t work right now). I said to myself โ€œSteve youโ€™re not drowning here and leaving Sarah all on her ownโ€ฆJust swim to the beachโ€ I knew if i stopped then iโ€™d drown , and i knew roughly which way the beach is so i started the breast stroke (iโ€™m really good at breast stroke). The faster i went the less likely i was going to drown so i kicked and pumped my arms as hard as i could!

I seemed to be swimming for quite a while and i couldnโ€™t hear Sarah at all, i thought Sarah wouldnโ€™t leave me out here alone? But maybe she is next to me or behind me as i can only hear the water forcing itโ€™s way into my ears, either way iโ€™ll meet up with her on the beach as she is an amazing swimmerโ€. There was no beach or island getting any closer and i tried looking and i thought i could see a shadow of something to my right (it was just blue everywhere else) so i steered myself towards the shadow and kept pumping my quickly tiring arms and legs.

โ€œYESโ€ i said whilst spitting out another mouthful of salt water โ€œThis looks like an island. OUCHโ€ i said as my knee hit something sharp and hard, it stopped me dead and i kicked my legs around to try and get purchase on something. I was so thankful that iโ€™d bought some โ€˜Hot Tunaโ€™ beach shoes with heavy rubber tread, as all i could feel with my feet were lots of points like hundreds of tall pointy pyramids trying to pierce me. As iโ€™m blind iโ€™m really good at feeling with my feet to compensate my sight loss, and after a few attempts i managed to grip on with a foot either side of the huge point. I was crouched and wobbling as i tried to counter the waves hitting me constantly but i was glad of the rest. Looking straight ahead (where i thought the boat would be) i saw nothing but blue. โ€œWow no boat or peopleโ€ i could also hear nothing or no-one. โ€œHow far have i swamโ€ i thought whilst looking to my left, i was using and straining my very blurry sight to itโ€™s limit but i could make out that this islet i was on continued further along. Realising i couldnโ€™t stay hear (especially as my foot slipped and my left shin is stinging like mad) i pushed away. ๐Ÿ˜จ ย 

Finally after swimming around those nasty pointy things ย i crawled my way onto the beach. โ€œI thought they said there was a bar hereโ€ i thought whilst hearing nothing as i sat down to catch my breath and to think about what had just happened. I expected to hear Sarah calling meโ€ฆBut nothing. I looked out again straining until my eyes burned but couldnโ€™t see a boat either. My left shin was really stinging and i knew it was bleeding and had salt water in it,โ€ฆ

Thenโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜จ ย 

As i was rubbing my hands to get the sand off i noticed my wedding ring was missing. My heart dropped through the floor so i checked againโ€ฆStill missing. My first thought was โ€œSarahโ€™s going to kill meโ€ as i dropped to my knees to search around the sand with my sweeping hands. I couldnโ€™t find it and knew it probably flew off in the mad panic from the boat, so i started walking up and down the beach at the sea edge and thought, “if people were looking for me at least they have a better chance of spotting me if iโ€™m up and moving”. The beach was only about 50 meters long and iโ€™d done a few lengths already and still heard nothing. I walked another time up and down the beach with the realisation of my predicament setting in. I was tired, iโ€™d lost my wedding ring and i was lost on a Caribbean islet, iโ€™d stopped walking at this point and was just looking out into the vast blue sea deep in prayer and thought when…

โ€œSteve?โ€ i looked a little to my right where iโ€™d heard the noise and thought โ€œThatโ€™s not Sarahโ€™s voiceโ€ โ€œSteve?โ€ โ€œYesโ€ i said as the man continued โ€œSarah (your wife) has sent me to guide you back to the boatโ€ I was almost in tears of relief as i started to walk into the sea and join him. He continued โ€œHow much can you see?โ€ โ€œVery likktleโ€ i said โ€œOk just follow my voice as i keep shouting at youโ€. I was back in the water and swimming along behind my navigator as we arrived at the rear of the boat. My mind was picturing me swimming into the propellers and slicing me into a thousand pieces just as i thought iโ€™d made it, but i hit the bottom step instead. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Climbingย the last step and into Sarah’s arms she saidย โ€œYouโ€™re not swimming ever again!โ€ i replied “I do not disassociate myself from that statement!โ€. Sarah continuedย โ€œDo you have any idea how terrified i was that iโ€™d lost you?!

I heard you enter the water as i was looking down to make sure i didnโ€™t trip on any of the tiny steps. A lady who was smashing around with an inflatable lilo and another person were totally distracting me with another inflatable theyโ€™d pulled out of nowhere, so when iโ€™d looked upโ€ฆYouโ€™d disappeared. I quickly looked to the right (towards the beach) to see if i could see anyone swimming in that direction, nothing. I looked straight ahead and still nothing. For some reason i looked out to the open sea, and just caught sight of your head bobbing up and down,ย The woman on the lilo kept chatting and chatting really loudly, people were behind me getting more drinks and some were trying to get into the water, it was really confusing. I tried asking the woman on the lilo to help but she wouldnโ€™t leave her lilo, so i asked a man behind me for some help, and when i turned back aroundโ€ฆYouโ€™d vanished again! More time passed and my thoughts didnโ€™t get any happier. Iย was still freezing and feeling a little sick after the hypo, i just wanted you back and to get a hot shower back in the cabin to get rid of this bone chill.

I continued asking for help when this kind man came over to me and i told him how you were heading for the beach, but iโ€™d seen you in the opposite direction heading out to sea! The man looked out to sea and couldnโ€™t see you anywhere, then he looked towards the beach and couldnโ€™t see you there either. A few more minutes went by and the man said โ€œThere he is!โ€ โ€œWhere?โ€ Sarah said โ€œHeโ€™s on the beach walking up and down the beachโ€ โ€œIs he ok?โ€ โ€œhe looks fineโ€ โ€œSteve is registered blind and wonโ€™t be able to see the boat never mind how heโ€™s going to get back. Could you please go and guide him back?โ€ I was so relieved when the man left to go and get youโ€ฆAnd now here you are! Youโ€™re banned from ever swimming again and youโ€™re never leaving my sight! ๐Ÿ˜กย 

Safe on the boat…

Weโ€™d sat back down when i was about to tell Sarah about losing my wedding ring when she said โ€œWhat have you done to your leg?โ€ I lifted my throbbing leg up for her to see โ€œWow itโ€™s cut and bleedingโ€ โ€œI know itโ€™s stinging like madโ€ โ€œIbet it is, how did you do that?โ€ I thought about a reply but it would be too long, and iโ€™ll tell her the details later โ€œIโ€™ve got even worse news than my legโ€ โ€œWhat could be worse than this?โ€ I held up my hand and said โ€œMy wedding ring has gone, it must’ve come off in my blind panic (pun intended)โ€. I was expecting a drilling but got a hug instead โ€œThatโ€™s ok iโ€™m just glad to have you backโ€ โค๏ธ

After a refresh and a very strong coffee, we went to reception and asked if a nurse could take a quick look at my leg to make sure it wasnโ€™t infected. We went down to the hospital deck and had my massive gaping wound (large cut) cleaned and got lots of large plasters to keep it covered for a couple of days. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

We decided not to get dressed up for the evening meal and just go up and get a snack from the buffet restaurant. We were just walking in when…

The man, ย his wife and his grandson walked up to us. The man was really limping as he approached and Sarah said โ€œOh no what happened? Did you enjoy the adventure today?โ€ The grandson said heโ€™d really enjoyed himself and the grandad said โ€œI stepped onto a sea urchin and it pierced straight through my sea shoes and deep into my footโ€. Sarah & i made the noise together โ€œAawwwwwโ€ โ€œYes it really hut and when i stepped backwards after the first sting, i stepped onto another one but luckily it didnโ€™t get me as bad! Did you 2 enjoy the day?โ€ Sarah relayed the story of what happened and showed him my leg. As we said our goodbyes i was in need of a chip butty! ๐Ÿ˜€ ย 

As we sat down and chatted about the usual Blind Sightseers adventure i said โ€œI didnโ€™t know i could swim that fast?!โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t startโ€ Sarah said with a smile lighting up her face. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย
