β˜€οΈ #38 The Blind Sightseers “Escape The Lockdown” With Distant Memories: “Itea, Greece”πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·(2017)

Itea logo

Good morning friends! (Καλημέρα φίλοι)Β πŸ˜€ Β

Let’s see where the β€˜Blind Sightseers’ are going today… Β

Β You’ll visit the glorious mountain setting for this monastery with outstanding Byzantine mosaics. Osias Loukas (Holy Luke) settled here in the early 10th.century and the church was built over his grave around 963 AD. It is the earliest extant domed-octagon church, and is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

On the dock…

The Thomson excursion team didn’t disappoint again and were waiting for us as we stepped off the ship. The kind man (sorry forgot his name) walked us to the correct coach as they have booked us the front 2 seats again. He also climbed aboard and said β€œI’m coming on this tour too and i can keep an eye on you both so you don’t get lost or have any disasters”. β€œFantastic” i said to Sarah as it makes us less stressed knowing there is one of the excursion team (and not just the local guide) on the trip with us.

On the coach…

β€œWow…There are loads of goats in a field. Steve if you could see you’d really like this, lol!” 🀣 Β

lots of goats in a field of yellow grass

Yay we’ve arrived…

As the monastery was set in the hills there was not much to see as we stepped off the coach. The guide then led us to the top of the steps that circled round and down to the monastery.

β€œSteve we have lots of long steps going down, i’ll let you know when the next one is approaching” Thank you my love” i said stepping down the first step. Sarah continued β€œStep down now…then 1, 2 , 3 flat steps and then step down” I obviously have to slow down because if i slip or fall just once i could twist or snap my ankle (especially with my weight, lol). β€œ1,2, step down, 1, 2, 3 step down” isn’t my wife amazing?!Β

There must have been about 2,000 steps as it took ages, but we wer’nt last and the Thomson man walked with us all of the way, i told you he was a kind man! πŸ˜€

At the bottom of the steps…Β

Reaching the bottom of the steps without tripping or slipping once (thanks to my amazing guide Sarah) there was a small cafe, shop, monastery and a museum. β€œWow you’d neve guess all of this was here when looking from the top” i said whilst looking at this beautiful place.

The guide said we have about 10 minutes before we can go inside the church. It was lovely in the courtyard and looking over the valley down below.

Rolling hills and olive rees

olive trees and rolling hills taken under a over hanging tree

As i was taking the 2 photos above i knew i couldn’t get the whole landscape in 1 photo…But i know someone who can!!!Β

You’ve guessed it…A stupendously sublime Sarah panorama.

Breathtaking panorama of the rolling hills and olive trees

Then as we were looking out (arm around each other) soaking up the hot sun, the Thompson man walked up behind us and asked if we’d like a photo together? β€œWow yes please”. Another photo of me and Sarah i’ll cherish…

Me and Sarah with arms around each other and the rolling hills of olive trees etc behind us

The church…

The guide said we had to wait for the monks to disappear as they don’t want to be around us, so they have to leave and not be seen. β€œThat’s evangelism” i said as the guide was passing Sarah an ankle length skirt. β€œYou have to put this on if you want to go inside”.

Entrance to the church

As we walked inside the church it was a lot cooler (i was thankful for that) and it also had a peaceful atmosphere. The knowledgable guide told us all about the architectureΒ of the church and the golden mosaics of the saints and apostles. I didn’t start a discussion on the Iconoclastic Controversies…I just enjoyed listening to the guide whilst Sarah captured a couple of photos. πŸ˜€Β

Inside and much darker image of the iside arches and roof

Β Back in the courtyard…

There was a little shop where you can buy local honey, olive oil and some other lovely souvenirs. Sarah bought some honey (we thought it would be good for hypo’s) and olive oil for us to try on salads (Oopps, i accidentally said salads…I meant steak, lol) when we get home.

The queue was pretty long in the shop so unfortunately we didn’t have time to have a proper Greek coffee in the cafe. We met back up with the group and headed towards the mighty steps.

I am much better walking up steps as the step casts a shadow and i can just make out the contrast and figure out where the steps are…And it’s much easier to fall upwards than fall down and keep rolling head over heals until you’re left in a crumpled, crushed and broken mess at the bottom…Left to exsanguinate as your life slowly slipps away, one blood drop at a time!Β πŸ€•

Returning to the dock..

The coach dropped us back right near the dock and as the excursion was only a short one…We had time to explore a little of the town, yay!Β

Oh did i mention it was burning hot?!Β β˜€οΈ Β

iPhone weather app showing Itea, Greece at 36Β°C

I know for most of you (and especially Sarah) that 36Β° isn’t that hot…But for me who wears cargo shorts all year round (even through the winter) it is burning. β˜€οΈ Β

We started walking and noticed their wasn’t many people around, as not many places were open. So we turned back and headed up the other street. We found a huge cafe/restaurant and headed inside. The place was empty but we could hear a coffee machine and some pots in the back rattling. β€œI’m not sure where we can order from? And i’m not sure if this place is open?” Sarah said whilst trying to find anyone at all. We walked back outside and Sarah said β€œThere is a woman serving coffee to those people right over there (on the dock overlooking the sea about 100 metres away) but it’s much too far to be part of this cafe”.

We walked around a little further and made sure there were no other shops in the area, then we headed back to the dock to get a table and wait for the barista. β˜• She did walk all the way back to the cafe we’d just been in to get the coffees…Wow i’d collapse of heat exhaustion. πŸ€•Β

The view of the sea and dock from the coffee shop seating area...I am right in the bottom right hand corner of the shot

Wow…This was the view we had from our table! We had plenty of time to just chill (burn) and relax and just soak in the view. Sarah and i love being beside the sea either like this or on a beach, as we live in a super green area near trees, village greens and conservation areas…So we love having holidays with sea and sand! πŸ˜€ β˜€οΈΒ

Yesterday we had our first β€˜Fredo Cappuccino’ in the cafe in Corinth, so when the barista placed 2 of them down in front of us we both grinned. πŸ˜€ β€œWow” we both said β€œthis is the best one so far” i said whilst trying not to drink it all in one go! We had about 2 hours before we needed to get back onto the ship, so we ordered 2 more fredo Β cappuccinos. After a while i asked to order 1 more for me and the barista said β€œNo you’ve had 2 already and you’re not having a 3rd” i thought she was joking until i tried asking again! 😒

After the amazing coffees we decided to have a quick walk up and down the empty dock before heading back on board.Β

Sarah taking a panorama of the dock area

Β Back on the ship..

We had time to refresh and change out of our sweaty clothes and make our way out on deck for a couple more shots before we leave the port. Β

Sarah's panorama taken from the ship with the island in the background and the ship in the right hand side

Wow…After another stunning Sarah panorama, i thought i’d show you my new t-shirt…It’s archangel Michael fighting the war in heaven from Revelation 12:7-9Β (for the record…I don’tΒ worship God through the use of icons, statues, mosaics or my t-shirt. There is oneΒ mediator between man and God…The Lord Jesus Christ).

Me atood on the deck with my new shirt on with arch angel Michael fighting Satan

We had a lovely evening meal again and when we returned to our cabin…Yay a fantastic towel elephant! 🐘 πŸ˜€ Β

Fantastic elephant folded towel

Wow what another interesting, beautiful and Β scorching day, i hope you enjoyed it as much as us?! See you tomorrow for the day Sarah has been waiting patiently for! πŸ˜€ β˜€οΈ Β

β˜€οΈ #37 The Blind Sightseers “Escape The Lockdown” With Distant Memories: “Corinth, Greece”πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·(2017)

Corinth logo

Me stood on the right with my arms out stretched and waving as the Thomson Spirit shit covers the whole background

Good morning friends! (Καλημέρα φίλοι)πŸ˜€ Β

I love the fact that we’ve just sailed to Corinth on the β€˜Spirit’ and we’re now going on a trip along the Corinth canal, then to walk around ancient Corinth in the historic footsteps of the Apostle Paul. To say i was excited is an understatement! πŸ˜€Β

But firstβ€¦β˜€οΈ Β

I’m not good in the sun but Sarah comes alive in the scorching hot weather. So i sloshed on my sun cream as it was already 36 degrees outside (ouch) I’ve also bought myself a β€˜Tactical Sun Hat’ to try and keep myself cooler in the sun and provide a little shade with the wide rim…It worked really well but i was still dripping like a candle in a Salvador Dali painting! 🀣 Β

Corinth canal…

Get ready to be impressed. The Corinth Canal marries up the Gulf of Corinth in the northwest with the Saronic Gulf in the southeast. It’s 3.9 miles long and its width varies from 69 feet at the bottom to 82 feet at the water’s surface. Before it was built, ships sailing between the Aegean and the Adriatic Sea had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese, adding another 185 miles to their journey. On this fascinating tour you’ll drive to Isthmia, around 1 hr’s drive, where a boat will be waiting to whisk you off. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views as you sail through this famous canal. Along the way, your guide will tell you interesting facts about the way it was built.

Β We stepped of the air conditioned coach and just as i said β€œArgghh now that’s hot” Sarah said β€œWow that’s better, it was freezing on that coach” we followed the group to the boat.

After Sarah excellently guided me onto the boat, we took our seats. The whole trip was just stunning and we were blown away by the walls of the canal and the sheer size of it. The guide was telling us all about the history etc over the loud speakers (my fave part as i can’t see the scenery until i get home and really zoom in for a blurry look). I do listen and hear Sarah’s detailed descriptions of the landscapes and any other points of interest. I also take in the other people around me and their reactions too.Β

Another photo taken from the front of the boat looking up the canal with tall walls either side and a bridge on top crossing over.

Β The Peloponnese…

Now for a blistering Sarah panorama! Β

A Sarah Panorama of the end of the canal where it expands into the vastness of the sea, with land touching each side

Another Sarah panorama with the sea and land stretching from end to end with rolling hills and mountains in the background

After doing a 180˚ turn we headed back down the canal, fantastic! πŸ˜€ Β Β

Me stood right at the rear of the boat with the beautiful Corinth canal in the background

Β Ancient Corinth…

You’ll now take a short drive to ancient Corinth, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the ruins of the “Agora” marketplace as well as the Temples of Apollo and Aphrodite.

We shot off the coach and followed the guide closely from the front, the path was all uphill and did i mention it was scorching hot?!Β β˜€οΈ I kept saying to SarahΒ β€œWow the Apostle Paul actually came here!” and after about the 10th time…We’d reached the top.

Me stood in front of the ancient Temple of Apollo wearing my tactical sun hat

Sarah and the Temple of Apollo

Temple of Apollo

After a brief history lesson all about the temples and the culture as it was back in the day, we headed along another hot dusty path and ended up at the Synagogue. β€œWow” i said β€œPaul would’ve visited this actual Synagogue several times…It’s simply amazing that i’m standing in biblical history”.Β

Upon leaving the synagogue the guide stopped and pointed to an ancient hebrew marking on the wall. Sarah quickly took a photo of it to share. I continued β€œWow, Paul may have walked under this very arch, wow!” 😲

A remain of the Jewish Synagogue where the Apostle Paul teached and preached

The Agora…

Moving further down and heading towards the agora, the sound of the cicadas were deafening, they were almost drowning out the voice of the guide…It sounded like i was walking around with a massive bee hive stuck on my head but less sticky and much less painful! 🀣 Β

β€œWow…the beema Β seat” i said whilst trying to get excited but actually about to collapse due to heat exhaustion. β€œThe agora! This is where the Apostle Paul would’ve been making tents..No way!” i kept going β€œDid you know Paul stayed in Corinth for about 18 months and he would’ve have frequently visited and worked around here!” Sarah replied β€œYes i know Steve it’s incredible, but we’re getting left behind as you keep stopping and making wow noises, lol!” 🀣 Β

β€œSarah could you take some photos of me in the Agora and in front of the beema seat? I’d love to have a photo as a keep sake…Oh and have i mentioned that the Apostle Paul would’ve been around here?!”. Sarah puts up with a lot! 🀣 Β Β

Me and the Agora

The cicadas were still singing their thunderous lament as we walked deeper into the Agora. The guide stopped to show us the ruins and described how it would have looked and what would be happening back in classical times. Β

lots of stones which are the ruins of the Agora in Corinth

Β And then…

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better…Sarah managed to fit the whole place in one monumental panorama! Β

A Fantastic Panorama taken by Sarah of the Agora

At this point i was so exhausted, head and shoulders stooped forward and my mouth was dry and frothing. I managed a slow shuffle back to the air conditioned coach. Sarah said β€œOh it’s freezing on here!Β

It still blows me away when i think of this excursion to ancient Corinth and how we were actually there. 😲

Back at the ship…

After freshening up back in the cabin, we still had a few hours before the ship left port. We’ve found that if the excursion leaves us with a few hours to spare we can use the ship as the starting reference and go and explore the town nearest to the dock (any further and we’ll get lost). This makes for a full day as we can go on the excursion around the island and then visit local shops and markets around the dock area…Yay! πŸ˜€Β

Wow…Did i mention it was hot! β˜€οΈ 😰

iPhone weather app showing Corinth at 36Β° and sunny

β€œYay…Steve a beach!” Sarah shouts as we step out of the dock, she continues β€œNo way, holidays don’t start until i’ve put my feet on the sand…Come on!” I was just about to protest (as i’d left my beach shoes in the cabin) when Sarah dragged (i mean guided) me onto the powdery sand.Β

The boiling hot sun, the powdery white sand and the gentle touch of the sea rolling over Sarah’s feet educed a wonderful smile. πŸ˜€ Β

My new Microfibre towel…

We were now wet, frazzled and covered in sand and we walked for a while before we found a bench under a large tree. β€œYes…Here you go” is said as i unclipped my new microfibre hand towel from my carabiner loop on my BDU shorts. I bought this little towel just before this cruise as i wanted to be more prepared as we learn a little more what we need from each holiday…And this time it worked beautifully! πŸ˜€ Β

After a while we were both sand free, dry and ready for a cold drink. We walked down a few streets then Sarah said β€œSteve, i think this looks like a cafe? I wonder if they do iced coffees?” β€œI hope so” i said feeling like a pulsing nuclear reactor.Β

They did the best iced coffee (Freddo Cappuccino) and even a sugar free one for Sarah…Β

Sarah enjoying an iced Cappaccino outside the Cafe in Corinth

As we were sitting outside drinking our amazing coffees…The man we’d met at the Captains table last night walked past and said hello. β€œWow” i said to Sarah after a brief chat with the man, β€œWe’re even making friends and it’s only the first day off the ship”.Β

Sadly it’s now time to return back to the ship…

Me stood in the middle of the road with buildings either side in Corinth

As we were walking towards the ship and the dock was empty…We stopped for a few photos…Β

Sarah stood in front of the Thomson Spirit shipwith both arms in the air

Me stood on the right with my shadow filling the rest of the photo

Then…

As we were taking lots of photos, another nice person from our ship walked up behind us and asked if we’d like a photo together?! β€œOh yes please that would be so kind of you” i said as i passed her my phone. πŸ˜€ Β

Sarah & i in front of the Thomson Spirit in the background

Back on ship…

We’d had a fantastic day and had lots to talk about with Β the people sat around our table at the evening meal. It’s lovely to hear other peoples stories from what they had done throughout the day, and to hear the adventures from the other excursions.

Finally…Just when you think the day is over, we have another fantastic folded creature.

A towel folded into a puppy dog with chocolates as his eyes

Β Hope you’ve enjoyed travelling with us today? We’ll meet you tomorrow ready for our next excursion!

Growing in grace

Grace logo

Growing in grace

(Thomas Moor, “Counsels and Thoughts for the Spiritual Life of Believers” 1882)

Remember that among your chief thoughts of the Lord Jesus, one must ever have a prominent place: that He is ever looking down upon you and watching you with tenderest love, and ordering all things for your good.Β

Sometimes it is spiritualΒ medicine, at other times it is spiritualΒ nourishment–but at all times it is spiritual good, and just what is best for you. He sees and knows just what is best for each day and hour. So, always when you think of Him, think of Him as thus looking down upon you and ever caring for you.

The Holy Spirit is ever leading us toΒ thinkΒ of Christ and toΒ liveΒ for Christ and continually toΒ lookΒ to Christ.

The natural mind makesΒ selfΒ the center, and self the end.Β
The spiritual mind makesΒ ChristΒ the center, and Christ the end.Β
The more we seek Christ, and the less we seek self–the more we please Him.

Christ is the source and end both ofΒ graceΒ on earth andΒ gloryΒ in Heaven.Β
Grace in the heart, is glory in its beginnings.Β
Glory in Heaven, is grace in its full consummation.Β

Growing in graceΒ is living more upon Christ, and living more for Christ, and growing more like Christ.

To learn of Christ and live upon Christ, is the highest experience of the soul here or hereafter!

πŸ“œ Precious Proverbs: Vomit

Proverbs Logo

Proverbs 26:11Β (ESV)

Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.

My Thoughts πŸ’Β

Wow, what an amazing word picture! Some of these proverbs just stick in your mind and heart (especially if you’ve had a dog.) It’s just so accurate and so full of His Wisdom that you can’t help but fall on your knees and ask once again for forgiveness.

Β πŸ™ Prayer 4 2day!Β

Loving Saviour, i don’t deserve the smallest of your mercies, and yet you continue to love, sustain and bless me in immeasurable ways!

Your love is blind to all of my faults, and ugly sides. I pray that You would work through me to love others compassionately and patiently. Amen.

Bring nothing but your sins and miseries!

Grace logo

Bring nothing but your sins and miseries!

(Thomas Wilcox)

“What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.” Philippians 3:8-9Β

When you come to Christ–you must leave behind you:
Β  all your own righteousness,
Β  all your own holiness,Β
Β  all your own sanctification,
Β  all your own duties,Β
Β  all your own tears,Β
Β  all your own repentings, etc.Β
Oh, this is hard!Β

You mustΒ bring nothing but your sins and miseriesΒ to Him. Otherwise, Christ is not fit for you–nor you for Christ!

πŸ“œ Precious Proverbs: The Unreliable Person

Proverbs Logo

Proverbs 25:19Β (NLT)

Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.

My Thoughts πŸ’Β

Ouch! We all know how much it hurts when we fail to put our trust in faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, it can really hurt us.

Β πŸ™ Prayer 4 2day!Β

Holy Father, forgive us when we’ve been the unreliable friend, help us to walk in your Spirit and show your steadfast love to others, in Jesus name, amen.

In everything give thanks!

Grace logo

In everything give thanks!

(Thomas Watson, “All Things for Good”)

“We know that God causesΒ everythingΒ to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

See what cause the saints have to be frequent in the work ofΒ thanksgiving!Β In this, Christians are defective; though they are much inΒ supplication–yet they are little inΒ thanksgiving. The apostle says. “In everything give thanks!Β 1 Thessalonians 5:18Β

Why so?Β Because God makes everything work together for our good.Β

We thank theΒ physician, though he gives us a bitter medicine which makes us nauseated–because it is to make us well. We thank any man who does us a good turn; and shall we not be thankful to God–who makesΒ everythingΒ work for good to us?

God loves a thankful Christian!Β Job thanked GodΒ when He took all away:Β “The Lord has taken away–blessed be the name of the Lord!” Job 1:21. Many will thank God when HeΒ gives; Job thanks Him when HeΒ takes away, because he knew that God would work good out of it.

We read of saints withΒ harpsΒ in their hands–an emblem of praise. Revelation 14:2. Yet we meet many Christians who haveΒ tearsΒ in their eyes, andΒ complaintsΒ in their mouths! But there are few with their harps in their hands–whoΒ praise God in affliction.

To beΒ thankful in affliction–is a work peculiar to a saint.Β
Every bird can sing in spring–but few birds will sing in the dead of winter!Β
Everyone, almost, can be thankful inΒ prosperity–but a true saint can be thankful inΒ adversity!Β

Well may we, in theΒ worstΒ that befalls us, have a psalm of thankfulness–because God works all things together for our good.Β Oh, be much in giving thanks to God!

Β Β  ~Β  ~Β  ~Β  ~

And did the Holy and the Just,
The Sovereign of the skies,
Stoop down to wretchedness and dust,
That guilty worms might rise?

Yes, the Redeemer left His throne,
His radiant throne on high,
(Surprising mercy! love unknown!)
To suffer, bleed, and die!

He took the dying traitor’s place,
And suffered in his stead;
ForΒ manΒ (O miracle of grace!)
ForΒ man, the Savior bled!

Dear Lord, what heavenly wonders dwell
In Your atoning blood!
By this are sinners snatched from Hell,Β
And rebels brought to God!

What glad return can I impart
For favors so divine?
O take my all, this worthless heart,
And make it wholly Thine!

My child, eat honey, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to the taste.

My Thoughts πŸ’Β

Each time i read this proverb i think of my lovely wife Sarah. When she has a bad hypo and her blood sugar goes really low (she has type 1 diabetes – T1D), Sarah always has a piece of toast with local honey on the top. Honey is good and it’s definitely sweet to the taste! πŸ˜€Β

The Bible, the Word of God!

The Bible, the Word of God!

(John Mason’s Spiritual Sayings)

The Word of God must be . . .
Β Β nearerΒ to us than our friends,Β
Β Β dearerΒ to us than our lives,Β
Β Β sweeterΒ to us than our liberty, andΒ
Β Β pleasanterΒ to us than all earthly comforts.

Take the candle of God’s Word and search the corners of your heart.

We speak to God in prayer.
God speaks to us in His Word.

AllΒ argumentsΒ against the Word of God are fallacies;Β
Β  allΒ ideasΒ against the Word are delusions;Β
Β  allΒ derisionΒ against the Word is folly; andΒ
Β  allΒ oppositionΒ against the Word is madness.

When GodΒ threatens, that’s a time to repent;Β
when HeΒ promises, that’s a time to believe;Β
when HeΒ commands, that’s a time to obey.

If a man believed the threatenings of the Word of God,Β
he would tremble and fly to the promises for refuge.hrist came out of His Father’s bosom, so
the promises came out of Christ’s riven side.

πŸ™ Prayer 4 2day!Β

Oh be merciful to me a sinner!Β

The devil’s old delusion!

Grace logo

The devil’s old delusion!

(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)

“John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him: You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire!” Luke 3

We have, in these verses, a specimen of John the Baptist’s ministry. It is a portion of Scripture which should always be especially interesting to a Christian mind.

We should first mark theΒ holy boldnessΒ with which John addresses the multitudes who came to his baptism. He speaks to them as a “brood of vipers!” He saw the rottenness and hypocrisy of the profession which the crowd around him were making, and uses language descriptive of their case.Β
His head was not turned by popularity.Β
He did not care who was offended by his words.
The spiritual disease of those before him was desperate, and of long standing–and he knew that desperate diseases need strong remedies!

Well would it be for the Church of Christ, if it possessed moreΒ plain speaking ministersΒ in our days–like John the Baptist.Β

A morbid dislike to strong language;Β
an excessive fear of giving offence;Β
a constant flinching from directness and plain speaking–
are, unhappily, too much the characteristics of the modern Christian pulpit.Β

Uncharitable language is no doubt always to be deprecated. But there is no charity . . .
Β  in flattering unconverted people,Β
Β  in abstaining from any mention of their vices,Β
Β  or in applying smooth names to damnable sins!Β

There are two texts which are too much forgotten by Christian preachers. In one it is written, “Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you.” Luke 6:26. In the other it is written, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men–or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were trying to please men–I would not be Christ’s servant.” Galatians 1:10

We should mark, also–how plainly John speaksΒ to his hearers about HELL and danger!Β
He tells them that there is a “coming wrath!”Β
He speaks of “the ax” of God’s judgment–and of unfruitful trees being “thrown into the fire!”

The subject of HELL is always offensive to human nature. The minister who dwells much upon it–must expect to find himself regarded asΒ barbaric, violent, unfeeling and narrow-minded!Β

Men love to hear “smooth things,” and to be told of peace, and not of danger. Isaiah 30:10Β

But the subject of Hell is one that ought not to be kept back, if we desire to do good to souls. It is one that our Lord Jesus Christ brought forward frequently in His public teachings. That loving Savior, who spoke so graciously of the way to Heaven–has also used the plainest language about the way to Hell.

Let us beware of being wise above that which is written, and more charitable than Scripture itself. Let the language of John the Baptist be deeply engraved on our hearts. Let us never be ashamed to avow our firm belief, that there is a “coming wrath” for the impenitent; and that it is possible for a man to be lost, as well as to be saved.Β

To beΒ silentΒ on the subject–is dreadful treachery to men’s souls. It only encourages them to persevere in wickedness, and fostersΒ the devil’s old delusionΒ in their minds,Β “You shall not surely die!”Β Genesis 3:4

That minister is surely our best friend–who tells us honestly of danger, and warns us, like John the Baptist, to “flee from the wrath to come!”

Never will a man flee–until he sees that there is real cause to be afraid.Β
Never will he seek Heaven–until he is convinced that he is on his way to Hell.Β

The religion in which there is no mention of Hell–is not the religion of John the Baptist, or of our Lord Jesus and His apostles!

Proverbs 22:14Β (ESV)

The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the LORD is angry will fall into it.

My Thoughts πŸ’Β

Coming from a broken home and being brought up with the life long radiation fallout of this…Love is whatever affection you can grab, and women where objectified. The Lord was certainly angry at me and my lifestyle and being trapped in pit after pit…

But God who is rich in love and mercy reached down and saved me. His Word was a sharp sword that cut straight through my soul and showed me what His true love is, and working through my lovely wife Sarah to show, teach and grow to be a husband fit for a princess! πŸ˜€ πŸ™πŸ»

The way to do good is to amuse people!

The way to do good is to amuse people!

(J.C. Ryle, 1884)
Β
A great change has taken place in the last forty years. A quantity ofΒ church workΒ is continually being carried on both by clergymen and laymen, which, however well-meant, can hardly be calledΒ Christian–and in reality has a painful tendency to throw true Christian work into the background, if not to throw it entirely out!Β

No one, for instance, can fail to observe that a large number of professors are spending all their time and strength on church music, church decorations, church programs, and an incessant round of churchΒ attractions. Others are equally absorbed in social work, feeding the poor, and improved dwellings for everyone. Others are incessantly getting up popular concerts, secular lectures, and evening recreations. They proclaim everywhere, thatΒ the way to do good is to amuse people!

Others are always occupied withΒ secularΒ guilds, and societies, and associations–and think you very wrong and heathenish if you do not join them. Myriads ofΒ professorsΒ are restlessly busy about such things from one end of the land to the other; and superficial observers are often saying,Β “What a great deal of church-work there is in these days!”

Now I would not for a moment be supposed to mean that all the things I have just mentioned are wrong and wicked. Yet I doubt whether the present state of things is altogether healthy. I doubt whether the work of the Holy Spirit on hearts and consciences, is not insensibly being left out in the cold and neglected. Amidst the incessant hustle and bustle about matters ofΒ entirely secondary importance–I doubt whether the sort of direct spiritual work to which the Apostles wholly gave themselves, receives as much attention as it ought.Β

It is quite certain that musical services, and church decorations, and concerts, and bazaars, and social work, and the like–will not save souls.Β

It is equally certain that, without repentance, and faith, and holy living, and practical, self-denying, kindly charity–no one is fit for Heaven. Do these simple, old-fashioned graces fill the place which they ought to do, in the daily proceedings of many so-called church-workers in this day? I confess I doubt it exceedingly.Β

I certainly see on every side a vast increase of what people call “church-work.” But there is little or no increase of true religion. There undoubtedly is moreΒ showΒ andΒ glitterΒ andΒ display. But I extremely doubt whether there is more spiritual reality, and more growth of practical godliness.

“TheΒ eyesΒ of the Lord are upon the righteous.
Β HisΒ earsΒ are open unto their cry.” Psalm 34:15

The Lord observes His redeemed people with approval and tender consideration.Β They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!Β He watches each one of them as carefully and intently, as if there were only that one creature in the whole universe!

Thus the Lord’s eyes and ears are both turned upon His saints. His whole mind is occupied with them. If they are slighted by all others–they are never neglected by Him. He hears their cry at once, even as a mother is sure to hear her sick babe. The cry may be broken, plaintive or feeble–yet the Father’s quick ear catches each note of lament or appeal, and He is quick to answer His children’s voice!

Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

Grace logo

Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

(J.C. Ryle)

“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42Β

We should observe what a high commendation our Lord Jesus Christ pronounced on Mary’s choice.Β There was a deep meaning in these words. They were spoken not only for Mary’s sake, but for the sake of all Christ’s believing people in every part of the world. They were meant to encourage all true Christians . . .
Β  to be single-eyed and whole-hearted,
Β  to follow the Lord fully,Β
Β  to walk closely with God,
Β  to make soul-business immeasurably their first business, and
Β  to think comparatively little of the things of this fleeting world.

The true Christian’s portion is the grace of God. It is the only good thing which is substantial, satisfying, real, and lasting. The grace of God is . . .
Β Β better in sickness–and better in health,
Β  better in youth–and better in old age,
Β  better in adversity–and better in prosperity,
Β  better in life–and better in death,
Β  better in time–and better in eternity.Β
No circumstance and no position can be imagined, in which it is not better for man to have the grace of God.

The true Christian’s possession shall never be taken from him.Β
He alone, of all mankind, shall never be stripped of his inheritance.Β
Kings must one day leave their palaces.
Rich men must one day leave their money and lands–they only hold them until they die.Β

But the poorest saint on earth has aΒ treasureΒ of which he will never be deprived. The grace of God, and the favor of Christ–are riches which no man can take from him. They will go with him to the grave when he dies. They will rise with him in the resurrection morning, and be his to all eternity!

What doΒ weΒ know of this “better part” which Mary chose? Have we chosen it for ourselves? Can we say with truth that it is ours? Let us never rest until we can. Let us choose life, while Christ offers it to us without money and without price. Let us seek treasure in Heaven–lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

Can you believe it . . .

Β  thatΒ youΒ should be the object of the Father’s love as truly as Christ is!Β

See the amazing sacrifice which the Father made in giving Jesus to us.Β

Think what it cost Him to tear His Well-Beloved from His bosom and send Him down below to be despised and rejected.Β

Think what it cost Him to nail Jesus up to yonder cross, and then forsake Him and hide His face from Him, because He had laid all our sins upon Him.Β

Oh, the love He must have had to us, thus to have made His best Beloved to become a curse for us, as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree!”Β

I want you to get this truth right into your souls, dear friends.Β
Do not hold it as a dry doctrine, but let it penetrate your heart.Β

We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!

Grace logo

We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!

(Charles Spurgeon, “Treasury of David“)

“The Lord raises the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy from the dunghill!” Psalm 113:7Β

What a gracious stoop of love! He frequently lifts the lowest of mankind out of their poverty and degradation, and adopts them into His family.Β

His gracious Spirit is continually visiting the down-trodden, giving beauty for ashes to those who are cast down, and elevating the hearts of His mourners until they shout for joy.Β

These upliftings of grace are here ascribed directly to the divine hand, and truly those who have experienced them will not doubt the fact that it is the Lord alone who brings His people up from the dust of sorrow and death. When no hand but His can help, He interposes and the work is done.Β

“And lifts the needy from the dunghill”Β whereon they lay like worthless refuse, cast off and cast out–left as they thought, to rot into destruction, and to be everlastingly forgotten.Β

How great a stoop from the height of His throne, to a dunghill! How wonderful is that power which occupies itself in lifting up beggars, all befouled with the filthiness in which they lay! For He lifts them out of the dunghill, not disdaining to search them out from amidst the base things of the earth–that He may bring to nothing the great ones, and pour contempt upon all human glorying.Β

What a dunghill was that upon which we lay by nature!Β

What a mass of corruption is our original estate!

What a heap of loathsomeness we have accumulated by our sinful lives!

We could never have risen out of this corruption by our own efforts–we were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!Β

Almighty were the arms which lifted us, which are still lifting us, and will lift us into the perfection of Heaven itself!

Looking at the world through the cross!

Looking at the world through the cross!

(Octavius Winslow)

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14Β

Jesus could accomplish man’s redemption in no other way than by crucifixion. He must die–and die the death of the cruel cross.Β

What light and glory beam aroundΒ the cross!

Of what prodigies of grace, is it the instrument,Β
of what glorious truths, is it the symbol,Β
of what mighty transforming power, is it the source!Β

Around the cross gathers all the light of the Old Testament economy:Β
Β  it explains everyΒ symbol,Β
Β  it substantiates everyΒ shadow,Β
Β  it solves everyΒ mystery,Β
Β  it fulfills everyΒ type,Β
Β  it confirms everyΒ prophecy,Β
of that dispensation which had eternally remained unmeaning and inexplicable, but for the death of the Son of God upon the cross.Β

Not theΒ pastΒ only–but allΒ futureΒ splendor gathers around the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It assures us of the ultimate reign of the Savior, and tells of the reward which shall spring from His sufferings. And while its one arm points to the divine counsels of eternity past–with the other it points to the future triumph and glory of Christ’s kingdom in the eternity to come! Such is the lowly yet sublime, the weak yet mighty instrument, by which the sinner is saved and God eternally glorified.Β

The cross of Christ is . . .
Β  the grand consummation of all preceding dispensations of God to men;
Β  the meritorious procuring cause of all spiritual blessings to our fallen race;
Β  the scene of Christ’s splendid victories over all His enemies and ours;
Β  the most powerful incentive to all evangelical holiness;
Β  the instrument which is to subjugate the world to the supremacy of Jesus;
Β  the source of all true peace, joy and hope;
Β  the tree beneath whose shadow all sin expires, all grace lives.Β

The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!Β
What a holy thrill these words produce in the heart of those who love the Savior!Β
How significant is their meaning, how precious is their influence!Β

Marvelous and irresistible, is the power of the cross! The cross of Christ has . . .
Β  subdued many a rebellious will;Β
Β  broken many a marble heart;Β
Β  laid low many a vaunting foe;Β
Β  overcome and triumphed, when all other instruments have failed;Β
Β  transformed the lion like heart of man, into the lamb like heart of Christ!Β

When lifted up in its own bare simplicity and inimitable grandeur–the cross of Christ has won and attracted millions to its faith, admiration, and love!Β

What a marvelous power does this cross of Jesus possess! It changes the Christian’s entire judgment of the world.Β Looking at the world through the cross–his opinion is totally revolutionized.Β
He sees the world as it really is–a sinful, empty, vain thing.Β
He learns its iniquity, in that it crucified the Lord of life and glory.Β
His expectations from the world, and his love to the world, are transformed.Β
He has found another object of love–the Savior whom the world cast out and slew.Β
His love to the world is destroyed by that power which alone could destroy it–the crucifying power of the cross.Β

It is the cross which eclipses, in the view of the true believer, the glory and attraction of every other object.Β

What is the weapon by which faith combats with, and overcomes the world? What but the cross of Jesus!Β

Just as the natural eye, gazing for a while upon the sun, is blinded for the moment to all other objects by its overpowering effulgence; so to the believer, concentrating his mind upon the glory of the crucified Savior, studying closely the wonders ofΒ graceandΒ loveΒ andΒ truthΒ meeting in the cross–the world with all its attraction fades into the full darkness of an eclipse.Β

Christ and His cross infinitely better than the world and its trinkets!Β

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14Β

The delight which God has in His redeemed people!

Grace logo

The delight which God has in His redeemed people!Β

“I willΒ rejoiceΒ over them to do them good.” Jeremiah 32:41Β

“AsΒ a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,Β so your God willΒ rejoiceΒ over you!”Β Isaiah 62:5Β

The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take greatΒ delightΒ in you . . . He willΒ rejoiceΒ over you with singing!” Zephaniah 3:17Β

How heart-cheering to the believer, isΒ theΒ delightΒ which God has in His redeemed people!

We cannot see any reason inΒ ourselvesΒ why the Lord should take pleasure in us. We cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan, being burdened; conscious of our sinfulness, and deploring our unfaithfulness.Β

And we fear thatΒ God’s peopleΒ cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies, that they may rather lament our infirmities, than admire our graces.Β

But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery–that as the bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so does the Lord rejoice over us!Β

We do not read anywhere that God delights in the cloud-capped mountains, or the sparkling stars–but we do read that His delights are with the sons of men.Β

We do not find it written that evenΒ angelsΒ give His soul delight; nor does He say, concerning cherubim and seraphim, “You shall be calledΒ Hephzibah, for the LordΒ delightsΒ in you”; but He does say all that to poor fallen creatures like ourselves, debased and depraved by sin–but redeemed and saved by His grace.Β

In what strong language He expresses His delight in His people! Who could have conceived of the eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, “He will take greatΒ delightΒ in you . . . He will rejoice over you withΒ singing!”Β

As He looked upon the world He had made, He said, “It is very good”. But when He beheld those who are the purchase of Jesus’ blood, His own chosen ones, it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer–but overflowed in divine exclamations of joy.Β

Should not we utter ourΒ grateful responseΒ to such a marvelous declaration of His love, and sing, “I will rejoice in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”Β

May we see our sins

(
Henry Law, “Family Prayers”)

O God the Holy Spirit, have mercy upon us miserable sinners. Move, we beseech You, in our disordered hearts. Remove the deformities of unruly desires and hateful lusts. Chase away the mists and darkness of unbelief. Brighten our inner man with the pure light of truth. Sow abundantly the seeds of righteousness. Make our souls fragrant as the garden of the Lord. Enrich them with every godly fruit. Beautify them with heavenly grace. Be our comforter, our guide, our light, our sanctification.Β

Especially take of the things of Christ, and show them with enlarged power to our longing souls. May we daily learn more of His love, His grace, His tender compassion, His faithfulness, and His beauty. May we delight ourselves in Him with increased delight.Β Lead us to the cross, and show us in His wounds–the hateful character of sin.Β May we see our sins, as . . .Β
Β  theΒ nailsΒ which transfixed Him,
Β  theΒ cordsΒ which bound Him,
Β  theΒ swordΒ which pierced Him,
Β  theΒ thornsΒ which tore Him,
Β  theΒ tauntsΒ which stung Him.Β

Help us to read in His cruel death, the reality and immensity of His love.Β

Open to us the wondrous volumes of glorious truth in the cry,Β “It is finished!”Β
Our atonement is forever achieved,Β
our debt is fully paid,Β
all our guilt is washed away,
all our sins most righteously forgiven,
our souls saved,
Hell vanquished,
the devil crushed,
Heaven won, andΒ
eternity of glory our rightful home!

Holy Spirit, deepen in us these saving lessons.Β
Write them with Your finger on the tablets of our hearts.Β

May our walk be . . .
Β  sin-loathing,
Β  sin-fleeing,
Β  Christ-loving,
Β  God-fearing!

Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil

Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil

(Charles Spurgeon)

“We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose!” Romans 8:28Β

The Christian does not merely hold this truth as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact. Everything has worked for good as yet.Β

TheΒ poisonous drugsΒ mixed in fit proportions, have worked the cure.Β

TheΒ sharp cutsΒ of the lancet, have cleansed out the infected flesh and facilitated the healing.Β

In every event of your life, God has always worked out the most divinely blessed results.

Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil–the believer’s heart is comforted, and he is enabled calmly to meet each trial as it comes. The believer can in the spirit of true resignation pray, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not mine! Send me what You will, my Father, so long as it comes from You!”

The crying evil of both the Church and of the world!

Grace logo

The crying evil of both the Church and of the world!Β

(Thomas Reade, “The Desire of More”)Β

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, andΒ covetousness, which is idolatry.” Colossians 3:5Β

“You can be sure that no immoral, impure, orΒ covetousΒ person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For aΒ covetousΒ person is really anΒ idolaterΒ who worships the things of this world.” Ephesians 5:5Β

The love of money
Β under every form, insinuates itself into every heart.Β

A day is fast approaching when it will be clearly seen whether Christ or Mammon has swayed our affections.Β

Covetousness
, in the language of Scripture, is the desire of having more. If we are habitually desirous of riches, for their own sake, we are, in the estimation of God,Β covetousΒ people, idolaters, the servants of mammon. Our station may be exalted; our profession of religion may be outwardly strict, but still our destruction is sure.Β

There are, perhaps, few sins which assume so plausible an appearance; and for which so many excuses are made as for that ofcovetousness. And hence it is that we have need to guard so much the citadel of the heart.Β

Covetousness
, eatingΒ like a canker, upon the vitals of our religion–isΒ the crying evil of both the Church and of the world!Β

What advantage did Lot’s wife, Achan, Gehazi, Judas, and Ananias and Sapphira, gain by their desire for more? They reaped shame and death; and now stand asΒ beaconsΒ in the Word of God to warn us against their soul-destroying sin!Β

For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul?”Β Luke 9:25Β

As foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!

As foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!Β

(Charles Spurgeon)

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes!” Romans 1:16Β

To try to win a soul to Christ by keeping that soul in ignorance of any truth, is contrary to the mind of the Spirit. To endeavor to save men by mere claptrap, or entertainments, or excitements, or oratorical displays–isΒ as foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!Β

The best attraction is the gospel in its purity. The weapon with which the Lord conquers men, is the truth as it is in Jesus. The gospel will be found equal to every emergency. The gospel is anΒ arrowΒ which can pierce the hardest heart–aΒ balmΒ which will heal the deadliest wound. Preach it, and preach nothing else. Rely implicitly upon the old, old gospel.Β

You need no otherΒ netsΒ when you fish for men; those your Master has given you are strong enough for the large fish, and have meshes fine enough to hold the little ones.Β

Spread those nets and no others, and you need not fear the fulfillment of His Word, “I will make you fishers of men.”

The diamonds of Heaven!

The diamonds of Heaven!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“You keep track of all myΒ sorrows.
Β You have collected all myΒ tearsΒ in Your bottle.
Β You have recorded each one in Your book.”Β Psalm 56:8

“Behold, he is praying!” Acts 9:11Β

Prayers are instantly noticed in heaven. The moment Saul began to pray, the Lord heard him. Here is comfort for the distressed but praying soul. Oftentimes a poor broken-hearted one bends his knee, but can only utter his wailing in the language of sighs and tears; yet that groan has made all the harps of heaven thrill with music; that tear has been caught by God and treasured in theΒ lachrymatory of Heaven.Β You have collected all my tears in Your bottle.”Β ThisΒ implies that they are caught as they flow!Β

The suppliant, who groans out his words, will be well understood by the Most High God. He may only look up with misty eye; butΒ prayer is the falling of a tear!Β Tears areΒ the diamonds of Heaven!Β SighsΒ are a part of the music of Jehovah’s court, and are numbered with the most sublime strains which reach the majesty on high!

Do not think that your prayers, however weak or trembling, will be unregarded. Our God not onlyΒ hearsΒ prayers, but alsoΒ lovesΒ to hear them. “He does not forget the cry of the humble.”Β

True, He does not regard proud looks and lofty words.Β
He no concern for the pomp and pageantry of kings.Β
He does not listen not to the swell of martial music.Β
He does not regard the triumph and pride of man.Β

But wherever there is a contrite heart full with sorrow, or a lip quivering with agony, or a deep groan, or a penitential sigh葉he heart of Jehovah is open! He marks that prayer down inΒ the registry of His memory!Β He puts our prayers, like rose leavesε‚etween the pages of His book of remembrance, and when the volume is opened at last there shall be a precious fragrance springing up therefrom!

When a tear is wept by you–do not think that God does not behold it

When a tear is wept by you–do not think that God does not behold it

(Charles Spurgeon)

“The LORD said:
Β  I have indeedΒ seenΒ the misery of My people in Egypt.
Β  I haveΒ heardΒ them crying out because of their slave drivers,
Β  and I amΒ concernedΒ about their suffering.
Β  So I have come down toΒ rescueΒ them . . .” Exodus 3:7, 8

Perhaps no figure of speech represents God in a more gracious light, than when He is spoken of as stooping from His throne and coming down from Heaven to attend to the wants and woes of His redeemed people.Β

How can we but love Him, when we know that He . . .
Β  numbers the very hairs of our heads,
Β  marks all our paths, and
Β  orders all our ways?

When a tear is wept by you–do not think that God does not behold it
, for . . .
“You keepΒ trackΒ of all my sorrows.
Β You haveΒ collectedΒ all my tears in Your bottle.
Β You haveΒ recordedΒ each one in Your book.” Psalm 56:8Β

Your sigh is able to move the heart of Jehovah,Β
your whisper can incline His ear unto you,Β
your prayer can stay His hand,Β
your faith can move His arm!

Do not think that God sits on high taking no account of you. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward Him.

There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!

There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!

(Charles Spurgeon)Β

“Be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age!” Matthew 28:20Β

It is well that there is One who is ever the same, and who is ever with us. It is well thatΒ there is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life. O my soul, do not set your affections upon rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures–but set your heart upon Him who abides forever faithful to you. Do not build your house upon the moving quicksands of a deceitful world–but found your hopes upon this rock, which, amid descending rain and roaring floods, shall stand immovably secure!

My soul, I charge you–lay up yourΒ treasureΒ in the only secure cabinet; store yourΒ jewelsΒ where you can never lose them. Put yourΒ allΒ in Christ; set . . .
Β  all yourΒ affectionsΒ on His person,
Β  all yourΒ hopeΒ in His merit,
Β  all yourΒ trustΒ in His efficacious blood,
Β  all yourΒ joyΒ in His presence,
and so you may laugh at loss and defy difficulties.Β

Remember thatΒ all the flowers in the world’s garden wither and die–and the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth.Β Death’s black extinguisherΒ must soon put out your candle. Oh! how sweet to haveΒ sunlight–when theΒ candleΒ is gone! TheΒ dark floodΒ must soon roll between you and all you have!Β

So wed your heart to Him who will never leave you. Trust yourself with Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death’s stream, and who will land you safely on the celestial shore, and make you sit with Him in heavenly places forever!Β

Go, sorrowing son of affliction–tell your secret troubles to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Trust all your concerns with Him . . .
Β  who never can be taken from you,
Β  who will never leave you, and
Β  who will never let you leave Him, even “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”Β

“I am with you always,”Β is enough for my soul to live upon–though all others forsake me!

All the ‘littles’ of our little world!

(Charles Spurgeon)Β

Divine omniscience affords no comfort to the ungodly mind, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account!” Hebrews 4:13Β

But to the child of God it overflows with consolation, “How precious also are Your thoughts unto me, O God.” Psalm 139:17

God is always thinking upon us; He never turns aside His mind from us, and has us always before His eyes! This is precisely as we would have it–for it would be dreadful to exist for a moment, beyond the observation of our heavenly Father! His thoughts are always filial, tender, loving, wise–and they bring to us countless benefits. Hence it is a choice delight for us to remember them.

The LordΒ hasΒ always thought upon His people–hence their election and the covenant of grace by which their salvation is secured.Β

He alwaysΒ willΒ think upon them–hence their continual preservation by which they shall be brought safely to their heavenly rest.Β

In all our wanderings, the watchful glance of the Eternal Watcher is evermore fixed upon us!Β We never roam beyond the Shepherd’s eye!Β In ourΒ sorrowsΒ He observes us incessantly, and not a pang escapes Him! In ourΒ toilsΒ He marks all our weariness, and writes in His book all the struggles of His faithful ones. These thoughts of the Lord encompass us in all our paths, and penetrate the innermost region of our being. Not a nerve or tissue, valve or vessel, of our bodily organization is uncared for.Β All the ‘littles’ of our little world, are thought upon by the great God!

Dear reader, is not this precious to you? The Lord lives and thinks upon you!Β

If the Lord thinks upon you, then all is well, and you may rejoice evermore!

“I’ve never seen so clearly since going blind” 20 Years Of Sight-loss!

Me playing my Taylor K22ce at church and in front of a cross on the wall

Hi friends. As it is 20 years to the day since i went blind…I thought i’d share one of my older posts(yet updated) from 4 years ago when i was asked to share a little of what i went through when i lost my sight at 24.

I really hope that you’ll have the time to read it, and that it blesses you in some small way?!Β

Here Goes…

I was asked by our Minister Nik if i would share my Testimony in the parade service. The theme was β€˜Faith through Adversity’, Nik said “i can ask you some straight forward questions, it will only take about 5 minutes(or so we thought)” β€œYeah, ok, if you think it will help?”.

Sunday 8th May 2016…

Walking into the church building Sunday morning, it was quite full, as it was parade service, the scouts and other uniformed groups were there, but Nik found us seats at the front, then showed me up the steps and where i’d stand to speak, after testing the microphone i remembered the steps and sat back down.Β

As i’m blind, i can’t use any notes, so i spent a little time trying to etch some answer headings into my mind, hoping i’d not veer too far off track. I then prayed that i’d use this time to Glorify Him, as i talked about the Truth that sets us free, and how i’m not ashamed of the Gospel, it’s the power of God unto Salvation to all who believe…please make it real(be careful praying this, lol).

It;s time…

Steve, we are looking at people who have showed faith in difficult circumstances and I have asked you to share some of your story with us.

Many people here, even those who have seen you around at various church events may not know that you are blind.

My Testimony…

Nik stood next to me at the microphone and started with the first 2 questions:

Have you always been blind? How and when did you loose your sight?

I explained i’d been fully sighted until i was 24, and after 2 brain haemorrhages(March – July 2000) that burst my optic nerve, i’m now registered blind and have Severe Hypertensive Retinopathy.

“How did that change your life?”

I said β€œI can only scratch the surface this morning, but if ever you see me walking around here or in town, please ask me anything. But now i’ll try and sketch you a quick picture and give you a flavour of what happened…”

β€œI went to the gym 6-7 days a week, played football most evenings and was quite violent, acting the tough guy. Β I wasn’t a Christian, i hadn’t been born again, or even been inside a church building…so…As i stepped out of the eye consultants office after being told i’d be blind for the rest of my life, it was out of character but i collapsed on the floor sobbingg my eyes out. And as my crying out got a little too loud they pulled me into a small empty room….And this was the easy bit”.

β€œFollowing this was pure isolation… all my football mates left me, i lost my job, my car and ability to do anything…i lost everything, i was completely broken, and on top of that i was left to my acusing thoughts β€œNobody wants you, you’re useless now, unwanted, rejected, unloved and unlovable!!”

Suddenly, as i was telling my story…

My mouth was silenced, an image of Jesus in Glory(Revelation 1) filled my mind, it wasΒ so clear(not blurred by my blindness)Β I could see His flaming eyes of judgment…then…the image changed, it was Jesus on the cross, now His eyes were filled with Mercy, Compassion & Grace, and while looking down straight at me he said β€œI did this for you, so that you can live. I…LOVE…YOU!!!

I started sobbing uncontrollably, and it took a couple of minutes for me to try and start talking again….but more sobbing…i was completely undone. But these tears were different!

I already knew He’d given His life so i could live. He’d come down so farΒ to save me it is immeasurable. His blood washed me clean, white as snow. He’s forgiven me all my sins, past, present and future, and there is no more condemnation for me, it is finished!

I’d been Β praying for so long for God to β€œBreak my heart for what broke His” and sang the songs many times, but rarely had i caught a glimpse of the true cost of His Love, and His free gift of Grace to those who Repent and Believe in Him. I knew He wanted me to share the True Gospel to people listening(and now reading), as it alone is the only Hope. It is the Power of God unto Salvation for anyone that believes.

Still sobbing, i continued…

My every word was a different pitch but i said β€œMy pit was so dark, my accusing thoughts were too heavy, and this led to a daily cycle of waking up and trying to kill myself…failing, which made me feel worse…then drinking so much i could drown them out for the rest of the day, until i woke the next day, then it started again.Β

I didn’t have the strength to kill myself, and i didn’t have the strength to live…i was without God, and without Hope!

Nik, who’s hand was rested on my shoulder asked question 4 “I know you were deeply unhappy at the time, what changed that?”

The world followed it’s pattern and sent me to Counselling, then Psychotherapy & finally Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, they didn’t work, they all had no answer for me, they couldn’t reach far enough down to pull me out. I needed a Saviour, I needed the light of the Gospel!Β

The Good News &Β Lovely Sarah

Meeting Sarah changed my life! I have no idea how she’s put up with me. She’s Β been so patient and long suffering as i tried attacking her Faith and this Jesus! But she kept on loving me. Sarah always seemed to have a rock to stand on no matter how bad things got for her, and i was being dragged deeper into the sinking sand. She always had this Blessed Hope that i didn’t,

Jesus worked through Sarah to shine the light of the Gospel, the Good News i was dying for.Β

Words failed me as i was trying to describe how much i love Sarah, so when my mind filled with thoughts of how far we’ve grown together in love…i broke down again.Β

The sobbing was still making me pause every few words, but mentioned Jesus doesn’t want to see anyone perish, but he pursues you, He has come to seek and save that which is lost. He loves you and no matter how bad or hopeless you think you are, He’ll keep coming with His free gift of Salvation!

Nik asked Question 5 “some people would say that your life must be worse now, would you agree with them?”

I’d gone way over my time slot, and i was almost pulled away from the mic as i was so overwhelmed…BUT i knew these tears were not about me, or my losses. I had 1 focus and that was to share the Truth that sets us free. I had no feeling of sorrow or pain. I knew it must have seemed like this to the congregation, and i thought they’d stick me in a counselling room when i’d finished!

The Holy Spirit was filling me like never before, and made the Power of the Gospel so real to me i almost exploded.

I continued β€œI wouldn’t agree with anyone who thinks(or measures) life by how good our circumstances are. I’d lead them to 2 Corinthians 4 & 5 where it talks about living by Faith, not by Sight, and now that we are born again in the Spirit, we should walk by the Spirit. Not living for things that are seen which are temporary(like my sight loss), but living for the unseen which is Eternal”

β€œI used to hate this song, but now i’d play it every service if i could…have you heard Amazing Grace, the Chris Tomlin version? If you pass me in the street you’ll normally hear me singing or humming these words:”

“Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.Β I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see. My chains are gone I’ve been set free. My God, my Saviour has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy reigns. Unending love, amazing grace”.

β€œI’ve never seen so clearly since going blind” This is one of my fave sayings.Β πŸ˜€Β

Nik then walked me back to my seat next to Sarah. The church was completely silent, it had been silent since i first started sobbing. I could feel Sarah was upset as she didn’t react for a while, then she said β€œPeople kept on running up and passing me tissues”. Nik sat down next to Sarah, and Sarah said β€œYou’re not borrowing him again to speak”.Β

After the service people came over and said they really connected with the things i said, although i think everyone thinks i’m back in dark depression again, lol.

He showed me the reality and Power of transformation in His Gospel, and how vital it is to share it, as Jesus is the Β Way, the Truth and the Life and no-one gets to Β the Father but by Him. He’s the forgiver of Sins, breaker of chains, and the only Salvation for Eternal Life in Heaven.

John 3:14-21Β New King James Version (NKJV)

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but[a] have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 β€œHe who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

I felt i needed to share this post to try and explain a little more of what was happening to me, and maybe reach out to someone who is struggling with the creeping death called Depression,or who is just simply lost and without God, and without Hope.

“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.” John 16:33Β

The way to Heaven lies through much tribulation. All our troubles are not over when we are saved by Christ; nay, then commonly our greatest sorrows begin! Nor are we to expect freedom from our troubles, until harbored in Heaven.

ThisΒ winter weatherΒ shall be useful to destroy those noxious weeds, which theΒ summer of prosperityΒ bred. By wintry trials, God will mortify and purge our corruptions!

At presentΒ we are tossed upon an ocean of troubles, fears and temptations–but these will make Heaven all the sweeter. Cheer up, then, O my soul, your salvation is now nearer than when you first believed! Yet a few more days, and then comes that blessed day you have so long waited and panted for!

God will shortly put a blessed end to all of your soul troubles, cares and watchings. The time is coming, when your heart shall be as you would have it, when you shall be discharged of all these cares, fears and sorrows, and never more cry out: “O my hard, my proud, my vain, my earthly heart!”

The time is coming, when all vanity shall be purged perfectly out of your thoughts–and they will be everlastingly, ravishingly, and delightfully entertained and exercised upon that supreme goodness and infinite excellency of God!

We come with our lamps burning brightly and with our lamps hidden.Β
We come with our longing and with our pride.Β
We come with our words and with our silence.Β
We come with our music and with our resentments.

Lord forgive our hardness of heart

Forgive us for those times when we think we can do it without you

Forgive us for our coldness towards you and others

Melt the ice of our coldness and breathe your new life into us

Generous God,
we thank you that a small amount of saltΒ
can season a whole meal;
a small candle can light a whole room,
a small act of kindness inspire a whole life,
a small community transform a whole city,
a small prayer bring near a whole kingdom.
We thank you, Lord, we thank you.

Please show me the areas of my life which have become flavourless?!

Show me in what ways can I be salt in my world?

We pray, gracious God, for your Church throughout the world, for your Church in this nation, in this place, that we would be light bearers and truth bearers.Β May we shed the light of encouragement where there is disappointment;Β the light of integrity where there is corruption;Β the light of clarity where there is uncertainty;Β the light of challenge where there is complacency;Β the light of acceptance where there is rejection.Β And may we always walk and pray and serve in the light of humility and in the strength of your name, that others may see you in us and give you the glory.

We pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

May you be as salt where there is staleness;
light where there is darkness;Β

and love where there is great need.Β
And may you know the blessing of God the Father,

The one indispensable book!

(Daniel March, 1870)

The Bible is theΒ oldest–and theΒ newestΒ of books.

The Bible surveys the whole field ofΒ time–and it looks farthest into the infinite depths ofΒ eternity.Β

The Bible lends the most vivid and absorbing interest to the scenes and events of theΒ past–and it keeps us in the most active sympathy with the time in which we live.Β

The Bible gives us the most reliable record of whatΒ hasΒ been–and it affords us our only means of knowing what isΒ yetΒ to be.Β

The Bible isΒ holyΒ enough to denounce the very shadow and semblance of sin–and it isΒ mercifulΒ enough to save the chief of sinners.Β

The Bible is full ofΒ God–and must therefore be read with a pure heart, or its true glory will not be seen.Β
The Bible is full ofΒ man–and must therefore always be interesting and instructive to all who would know themselves.

The Bible is theΒ plainestΒ of books–and yet it hasΒ depths of wisdomΒ which no created mind can fathom.Β

The Bible is set up as a beacon to show all wanderers the safe way–and yet its light shines forth from thick clouds of mystery, and from abysses of infinite darkness.Β

The Bible describes all conditions of life–and it gives utterance to all desires and emotions of the soul.Β

The Bible has a song of triumph for theΒ overcomer–and a wail of defeat for theΒ overcome.Β

The Bible . . .
Β  sparkles with the fervor and gladness ofΒ youth,
Β  celebrates the strength and glory ofΒ manhood,
Β  bewails the sorrows and infirmities ofΒ old age.Β

The Bible . . .
Β  exults in the mighty deeds of kings and conquerors,Β
Β  sympathizes with the poor and lowly,Β
Β  lifts up the fallen,Β
Β  delivers the oppressed, andΒ
Β  breathes the blessing of peace upon the quiet homes of domestic life.Β

The Bible describes with startling clearness . . .
Β  the seductions ofΒ temptation,
Β  the conflicts ofΒ doubtΒ and
Β  the miseries ofΒ skepticism.Β

The Bible . . .
Β  searches the secret chambers of theΒ heart,Β
Β  brings to light its purest love and its darkest hate,Β
Β  reveals its highest joy and its deepest grief.Β

The Bible compasses the utmost range ofΒ thoughtΒ andΒ feelingΒ andΒ desire–and it sounds the utmost depth ofΒ motiveΒ andΒ characterandΒ passion.

Thus in the Bible,Β
Β  God and man,
Β  earth and heaven,
Β  time and eternity–
speak with one voice and teach the same truth.Β

The Bible sets forth the most spiritual and heavenly truths–in the lights and shadows of earthly scenes and human characters.Β

Thus the Bible isΒ the one indispensable bookΒ . . .
Β  for all ages–and all nations,
Β  for all classes of men–and all states of society,
Β  for all capacities of intellect–and all necessities of the soul!

☒️ How Are You All?

Sarah with arems around Steve

Hi friends!

We just wanted to send you a quick message to ask how you’re all doing during this challenging time?

Don’t forget we have a reason to sing with gratitude to the Lord every time we wake up to a new day filled with grace and mercy. Many times we forget to express our gratefulness in these busy, crazy and painful times. However, we can sing songs of thankfulness for God’s goodness and make a joyful noise as the true Spiritual church.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

I do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:9-14)

Stay safe and keep singing to the Lord! πŸŽΆπŸ˜€β™₯️

Yours in Christ
