A subtle leaven which the heart is always ready to receive!

AĀ subtle leavenĀ which the heart is always ready to receive!

(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)

“Beware of theĀ leaven of the Pharisees–which isĀ hypocrisy. For there is nothingĀ coveredĀ that will not be revealed, norĀ hiddenĀ that will not be made known.” Luke 12:1-2

The first thing that demands our attention in these verses, isĀ Christ’s warning against hypocrisy.Ā

This is aĀ warningĀ of which the importance can never be overrated. It was delivered by our Lord more than once, during His earthly ministry. It was intended to be a standing caution to His whole church in every age, and in every part of the world.Ā

It was meant to remind us thatĀ the principles of the Pharisees are deeply ingrained in human nature–and that Christians should be always on their guard against them. Hypocrisy isĀ aĀ subtle leavenĀ which the heart is always ready to receive!Ā It is a leaven which once received into the heart, infects the whole character of a man’s Christianity. Of this leaven, says our Lord, in words that should often ring in our ears–of this leaven,Ā beware!

Let us ever nail this caution in our memories, and bind it on our hearts.Ā The plague is around us on every side!Ā The danger is at all times. What is the essence of Romanism, and formalism, and ceremonialism? What is it all, but the leaven of the Pharisees under one shape or another?Ā The Pharisees are not extinct!Ā Pharisaism lives still.

If we would not become Pharisees–then let us cultivate a ‘heart religion’. Let us realize daily that the God with whom we have to do, looks far below the outward surface of our profession, and that He measures us by the state of our hearts. Let us beĀ realĀ andĀ trueĀ in our Christianity. Let us abhor all part-acting, and affectation, and semblance of devotion–put on for public occasions, but not really felt within.Ā

Our hypocrisy may deceive man, and get us the reputation of being very religious–but it cannot deceive God. “For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be made known.”Ā

Whatever we are in religion–let us never wear a cloak or a mask of religion.

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account!” Hebrews 4:13Ā

“The Aged Christian’s Final Farewell to the World and its Vanities” John Whitson, 1558-1629)

I desire that this may be the text at my funeral: Psalm 42:2, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”

Oh! when shall I ascend to the eternal throne of blessedness, where no comforts are lacking?

When shall I be covered with the glorious robe of immortality, and shine in the brightness of my Redeemer’s innocence?

When shall I behold the lovely face of my Lord and dwell in the courts of His holy temple, where . . .
all tears shall be wiped away from my eyes,
all sorrows removed from my heart,
and all sins and spots are done away?

Where I shall exchange the dross of this world, for true and durable riches!

Where, instead of these earthly riches which moth and rust corrupt–I shall enjoy the heavenly riches of perfect peace and good conscience, never to be lost!

Instead of these false and flattering honors, I shall enjoy everlasting glory, and be admitted into the fellowship of my Redeemer to reign with Him in His glorious kingdom!

Instead of vain and momentary pleasures, I shall be filled with fullness of joy and be ravished with those delights which neither eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man to conceive!

Instead of this dark and cloudy knowledge, I shall have my heart enlightened with the beams of the true light!

Instead of this feeble strength, I shall be endowed with the might of angels!

Instead of this transitory health, I shall enjoy a powerful and immortal vigor!

Instead of this fading beauty, I shall be adorned with the loveliness of Christ’s spouse!

Instead of long life, I shall be crowned with life eternal!

We shall sing, Holy! Holy! Holy! Lord God almighty! Heaven and Earth are full of your glory. Glory be to You, O Lord, most High.

And now, as the deer pants for the water-brooks, so longs my soul after You, O God!
O that I had wings like a dove, that I might fly away and be at rest!
For whom have I in Heaven but You–and who is there upon earth that I desire but You?
My heart and my strength fail me, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever!

The sweetest and the loudest note in our songs of praise should be . . .

The sweetest and the loudest note in our songs of praise should be . . .

(Charles Spurgeon)Ā

“O that we would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to men.” Psalm 107:8

If weĀ complainedĀ less andĀ praisedĀ more–we would be happier, and God would be more glorified.Ā

Let us daily praise God forĀ common mercies. They areĀ commonĀ as we frequently call them, and yet soĀ priceless, that when deprived of them–we imagine that we are ready to perish! Let us bless God . . .
Ā  for theĀ eyesĀ with which we behold the sun;
Ā  for theĀ healthĀ andĀ strengthĀ to walk abroad;
Ā  for theĀ breadĀ we eat;
Ā  for theĀ clothingĀ we wear;
Ā  for public and religiousĀ liberty;
Ā  for friends and family associations; and
Ā  for countless other comforts and blessings.Ā

Let us praise Him, in fact, for everything which we receive from His bounteous hand; for we deserve little, and yet are most plenteously endowed.Ā

But beloved,Ā the sweetest and the loudest note in our songs of praise should beĀ ofĀ redeeming love!Ā God’s redeeming acts towards His chosen people, are forever the favorite themes of their praise. If we know what redemption means, let us not withhold our sonnets of thanksgiving.

We have been redeemed from the power of our corruptions, and uplifted from the depth of sin in which we were naturally plunged.Ā

We have been led to the cross of Christ, and our shackles of guilt have been broken off.

We are no longer slaves of sin–but children of the living God.

We shall shortly be presented before the eternal throne without spot or wrinkle or any such thing.Ā

Shall we not unceasingly give thanks to the Lord our Redeemer?Ā

Child of God, can you be silent?Ā

Awake, awake, O inheritors of eternal glory, and cry out with David, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me–bless His holy name!”

You are absolutely beautiful, My beloved!

Grace logo

You are absolutely beautiful, My beloved!

(Charles Spurgeon)Ā

You are absolutely beautiful, My beloved!Ā There is no spot in you!” Song of Solomon 4:7Ā

The Lord’s admiration of His Church is very astonishing, and His description of her beauty is very glowing. She is not merelyĀ beautiful–but “absolutely beautiful.” He views her in Himself, washed in His sin-atoning blood, and clothed in His meritorious righteousness–thus He considers her to be full of loveliness and beauty. No wonder that such is the case–since it is but His own perfect excellency that He admires; for the holiness, glory, and perfection of His Church–are His own glorious garments on the back of His own well-beloved spouse!

Nor is the ChurchĀ barelyĀ lovely, she isĀ superlativelyĀ so. Her Lord styles her the “most beautiful of women.” Song of Solomon 1:8Ā

She has a real worth and excellence which cannot be rivaled by all the nobility and royalty of the world. If Jesus could exchange His elect bride for all the angels in Heaven–He would not, for He puts her first and foremost, “most beautiful of women.” She far outshines the stars!

Nor is this an opinion which He is ashamed of, for He invites all men to hear it. He sets a “behold” before it, a special note of exclamation, inviting and arresting attention. “Behold! How beautiful you are, My beloved, how beautiful!” (Song of Solomon 4:1). His opinion He publishes abroad even now, and one day from the throne of His glory He will avow the truth of it before the assembled universe.Ā “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with Me!”Ā will be His solemn affirmation of the loveliness of His elect!

“Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her Ā to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word,Ā and to present her to Himself asĀ a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless!”Ephesians 5:25-27Ā

“The king is enthralled by your beauty!”Ā Psalm 45:11Ā

Extremely derogatory to human pride!

Extremely derogatory to human pride!Ā

(Stephen Tyng, “Christ is All”)Ā

“In hisĀ pride, the wicked does not seek God; in all his thoughts, there is no room for God!” Psalm 10:4Ā

Sin has entirely perverted the nature of man.Ā

The carnal mind is opposed to God in its . . .Ā
Ā  judgments,Ā
Ā  tastes,Ā
Ā  desires,
Ā  pursuits.Ā

God demands that guilty man . . .Ā
Ā Ā  sacrifice his own imaginaryĀ independence,Ā
Ā Ā  renounce his own fanciedĀ excellence, andĀ
Ā Ā  acknowledge his personalĀ unworthiness,Ā
before he can be received into the family of God.Ā

Such demands seemĀ extremely derogatory toĀ human pride. For this reason, multitudes reject all the offers of the Gospel, and treat with contempt those who yield to the invitations which they themselves despise, and submit to the motives which they renounce, as deluded and degraded people.

“The day is coming whenĀ your pride will be brought lowĀ and the Lord alone will be exalted.” Isaiah 2:11

“The Lord Almighty has done it toĀ destroy your prideĀ and show His contempt for all human greatness.” Isaiah 23:9

The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sureĀ of this: They will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5

This makes us prize the gospel, embrace the Savior, and fly to His cross!

This makes us prize the gospel, embrace the Savior, and fly to His cross!

(Letters of John Berridge, 1716-1793)

Dear Sir,Ā
In November I gathered strength enough to preach, and through mercy have continued preaching ever since. For the last month I have shared with my neighbors in a bad cold, which has kept me wheezing and coughing, and pulled me down, but not laid me up.Ā

Oh, how needful is theĀ furnace, both to reveal our dross, and to purge it away! How little do we know of ourselves, of the pride, sensuality, and idolatry of our hearts–until the Lord lays us on a bed of suffering, and searches all our inward parts with His candles. My heart, I knew, was bad enough, but I scarcely thought there was half the baseness in it which I find, and yet I know not half its plague!Ā

How sweet is the mercy of God, and how rich is the grace of Jesus–when we have had an awful peep into our hearts!Ā This makes us prize the gospel, embrace the Savior, and fly to His cross!Ā At times I am so overwhelmed with the filth and mire of my nature, that I can scarcely look through it unto Jesus. And when he has put on a little of his eye-salve, and scoured the scales off my eyes–I stand amazed to think that He can touch such a leper! And yet where the sun shines clear for a season, and my dung-hill is covered with snow, I forget my leprosy, or become a leper only in notion. I think it perhaps, but do not feel it, nor am I humbled by it. What a heap of absurd contradiction is man!Ā

After an affliction, I think I can say with David: It is good for me to have been afflicted. I can see and feel some profit attending it. Indeed, I never grow really wiser or better, unless when I am baptized both with theĀ Holy SpiritĀ and withĀ fire. If the Dove comes without a furnace, my heart is soon lifted up; pride steals in, and Heaven’s blessed beams turn everything sour within me! We learn nothing truly of ourselves, or of grace, but in a furnace.

The heaviest afflictions on this side of Hell are less, far less than my iniquities have deserved! Oh, boundless grace! The chastening rod of a reconciled Father, might have been the flaming sword of an avenging Judge! I might now have been weeping and wailing with devils and damned spirits in Hell! I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against Him. It is of His mercy alone, that I am not consumed!

All that we see within is foul, ugly and grim!

All that we see within is foul, ugly, and grim!

(Frank Hall)

“You are complete in Him!” Colossians 2:10Ā

Oh desponding Christian, is not your grief caused by looking within yourself? Is not that miserable feeling of failure and disappointment, caused by your strange fixation upon your hollow heart of iniquity? You lookĀ within, hoping to find something good, something pure, something precious, something clean–but what do you see?Ā Nothing but sin!Ā To stare into one’s self–is to stare into a bottomless pit of despair and hopelessness! “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked!” Jeremiah 17:9

Will we ever learn this? There is nothingĀ withinĀ usĀ to give us hope, rest, or peace. Have we ever found anythingĀ within usĀ that gave us joy? Of course not! Then why do we continue toĀ stare into the darkness?Ā All that we see within is foul, ugly, and grim!Ā One glance within ought toĀ sickenĀ us. We would sooner find diamonds in a dunghill or roses growing in a sewer–than find goodness dwelling within!

In ourselves we are sinful, guilty, and vile! But bless God forever!Ā
OurĀ standingĀ before God is not in ourselves; it’s in Christ! He is . . .
Ā  our Salvation,
Ā  our Righteousness,Ā
Ā  our Hope,
Ā  our Holiness, and
Ā  our Acceptance with God!Ā

Change the direction of your gaze–and look up! Stop staring into the empty void of your heart–and fix your eyes upon Jesus your Lord, in whom all fullness dwells. Our hope is not within, but without, seated at the right hand of the Father! Lift up your head that is bowed down with guilt and shame! Behold Christ your Savior! Behold your glorious Redeemer! Bid sorrow goodbye and fear depart! Rejoice, for “YouĀ areĀ complete in Him!”Ā

Believers are perfect in Christ. To be complete in Christ is to be perfect in Christ. Perfect is not something that we will be, or strive to be–but something that we are right now, by virtue of our eternal union with God’s darling Son.Ā

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are, by the free grace of God, complete in Christ our Savior!Ā
We lack nothing!Ā
All that HeĀ is–we are in Him!Ā
All that HeĀ has–we have in Him!
All that He hasĀ done–we’ve done in Him!Ā
We possess the infinite fullness of eternal life and everlasting salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord!

We are completelyĀ righteousĀ in Him!
We are completelyĀ holyĀ in Him!
We are completelyĀ forgivenĀ in Him!
We are completelyĀ acceptedĀ in Him!Ā
We are completely, everlastingly, perfectlyĀ sinlessĀ in Him!

Christ’s sympathy!

Christ’s sympathy!

(Octavius Winslow, “The Tears of Christ”)Ā

“Jesus wept!”Ā John 11:35Ā

The Creator of all worlds, the Author of all beings, the Upholder of the universe–raining tears of human woe and sympathy upon a grave!Ā

Oh, there lives not a being in the universe who can enter into our bereavements with the sympathy, the support, and the soothing of Christ!Ā

They wereĀ tears of sympathy. His heart was touched, deeply touched, with sympathy for the sorrow of others. He wept because the mourning sisters wept. He mingled His tears with theirs.Ā

This is true sympathy,Ā “weeping with those who weep,”Ā making their sorrow our own. How really our Lord does this with His people. So completely is He our Surety–that He takes our sins and infirmities, our trials and sorrows upon Himself, as if they were all and entirely His own. Our sins were so completely laid upon Him–that not one remains charged to the account of those who believe in Jesus.Ā

Our present griefs are so entirely absorbed in Him, that,Ā
Ā  softened by His love,
Ā  soothed by His sympathy,
Ā  supported by His grace–Ā
the trial is welcome,Ā
the affliction is sweet, andĀ
the rod of a Father’s chastening, buds and blossoms into delectable fruit.Ā

Bereaved mourner, the sympathy of Christ is yours! The same Savior who wept at the grave of Bethany, now shares your grief. Do not imagine that your sorrow is isolated, or that your tears are forbidden or unseen. You have a merciful and faithful High Priest who is touched with your present calamity.Ā

There exists no sympathy . . .Ā Ā
Ā  so real,Ā
Ā  so perceptive,Ā
Ā  so deep,Ā
Ā  so tender,Ā
Ā  so sanctifying–Ā
asĀ Christ’s sympathy.Ā

If your heavenly Father has seen it wise and good to remove from you theĀ spring of human pity–it is but that He may draw you closer beneath the wing of Jesus’ compassion, presence and love.Ā

O child of sorrow, will not this suffice, that you possess Christ’s sympathy–as immeasurable and exhaustless as the ocean–as exquisite and changeless as His being! Yield your heart to His rich compassion!Ā

Will Jesus be regardless of what I feel, and the sorrows under which I groan? Oh no! TheĀ sighĀ that bursts in secret from my heart is not secret to Him; theĀ tearĀ that is my food day and night and dropsĀ unperceived and unknown–is known and remembered by Him!Ā

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses!” Hebrews 4:14-15Ā

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book.”Ā Psalm 56:8

Growing in grace

Growing in grace

(Thomas Moor, “Counsels and Thoughts for the Spiritual Life of Believers” 1882)

Remember that among your chief thoughts of the Lord Jesus, one must ever have a prominent place: that He is ever looking down upon you and watching you with tenderest love, and ordering all things for your good.Ā

Sometimes it is spiritualĀ medicine, at other times it is spiritualĀ nourishment–but at all times it is spiritual good, and just what is best for you. He sees and knows just what is best for each day and hour. So, always when you think of Him, think of Him as thus looking down upon you and ever caring for you.

The Holy Spirit is ever leading us toĀ thinkĀ of Christ and toĀ liveĀ for Christ and continually toĀ lookĀ to Christ.

The natural mind makesĀ selfĀ the center, and self the end.Ā
The spiritual mind makesĀ ChristĀ the center, and Christ the end.Ā
The more we seek Christ, and the less we seek self–the more we please Him.

Christ is the source and end both ofĀ graceĀ on earth andĀ gloryĀ in Heaven.Ā
Grace in the heart, is glory in its beginnings.Ā
Glory in Heaven, is grace in its full consummation.Ā

Growing in graceĀ is living more upon Christ, and living more for Christ, and growing more like Christ.

To learn of Christ and live upon Christ, is the highest experience of the soul here or hereafter!

In everything give thanks!

(Thomas Watson, “All Things for Good”)

“We know that God causesĀ everythingĀ to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

See what cause the saints have to be frequent in the work ofĀ thanksgiving!Ā In this, Christians are defective; though they are much inĀ supplication–yet they are little inĀ thanksgiving. The apostle says. “In everything give thanks!Ā 1 Thessalonians 5:18Ā

Why so?Ā Because God makes everything work together for our good.Ā

We thank theĀ physician, though he gives us a bitter medicine which makes us nauseated–because it is to make us well. We thank any man who does us a good turn; and shall we not be thankful to God–who makesĀ everythingĀ work for good to us?

God loves a thankful Christian!Ā Job thanked GodĀ when He took all away:Ā “The Lord has taken away–blessed be the name of the Lord!” Job 1:21. Many will thank God when HeĀ gives; Job thanks Him when HeĀ takes away, because he knew that God would work good out of it.

We read of saints withĀ harpsĀ in their hands–an emblem of praise. Revelation 14:2. Yet we meet many Christians who haveĀ tearsĀ in their eyes, andĀ complaintsĀ in their mouths! But there are few with their harps in their hands–whoĀ praise God in affliction.

To beĀ thankful in affliction–is a work peculiar to a saint.Ā
Every bird can sing in spring–but few birds will sing in the dead of winter!Ā
Everyone, almost, can be thankful inĀ prosperity–but a true saint can be thankful inĀ adversity!Ā

Well may we, in theĀ worstĀ that befalls us, have a psalm of thankfulness–because God works all things together for our good.Ā Oh, be much in giving thanks to God!

The devil’s old delusion!

The devil’s old delusion!

(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)

“John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him: You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire!” Luke 3

We have, in these verses, a specimen of John the Baptist’s ministry. It is a portion of Scripture which should always be especially interesting to a Christian mind.

We should first mark theĀ holy boldnessĀ with which John addresses the multitudes who came to his baptism. He speaks to them as a “brood of vipers!” He saw the rottenness and hypocrisy of the profession which the crowd around him were making, and uses language descriptive of their case.Ā
His head was not turned by popularity.Ā
He did not care who was offended by his words.
The spiritual disease of those before him was desperate, and of long standing–and he knew that desperate diseases need strong remedies!

Well would it be for the Church of Christ, if it possessed moreĀ plain speaking ministersĀ in our days–like John the Baptist.Ā

A morbid dislike to strong language;Ā
an excessive fear of giving offence;Ā
a constant flinching from directness and plain speaking–
are, unhappily, too much the characteristics of the modern Christian pulpit.Ā

Uncharitable language is no doubt always to be deprecated. But there is no charity . . .
Ā  in flattering unconverted people,Ā
Ā  in abstaining from any mention of their vices,Ā
Ā  or in applying smooth names to damnable sins!Ā

There are two texts which are too much forgotten by Christian preachers. In one it is written, “Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you.” Luke 6:26. In the other it is written, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men–or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were trying to please men–I would not be Christ’s servant.” Galatians 1:10

We should mark, also–how plainly John speaksĀ to his hearers about HELL and danger!Ā
He tells them that there is a “coming wrath!”Ā
He speaks of “the ax” of God’s judgment–and of unfruitful trees being “thrown into the fire!”

The subject of HELL is always offensive to human nature. The minister who dwells much upon it–must expect to find himself regarded asĀ barbaric, violent, unfeeling and narrow-minded!Ā

Men love to hear “smooth things,” and to be told of peace, and not of danger. Isaiah 30:10Ā

But the subject of Hell is one that ought not to be kept back, if we desire to do good to souls. It is one that our Lord Jesus Christ brought forward frequently in His public teachings. That loving Savior, who spoke so graciously of the way to Heaven–has also used the plainest language about the way to Hell.

Let us beware of being wise above that which is written, and more charitable than Scripture itself. Let the language of John the Baptist be deeply engraved on our hearts. Let us never be ashamed to avow our firm belief, that there is a “coming wrath” for the impenitent; and that it is possible for a man to be lost, as well as to be saved.Ā

To beĀ silentĀ on the subject–is dreadful treachery to men’s souls. It only encourages them to persevere in wickedness, and fostersĀ the devil’s old delusionĀ in their minds,Ā “You shall not surely die!”Ā Genesis 3:4

That minister is surely our best friend–who tells us honestly of danger, and warns us, like John the Baptist, to “flee from the wrath to come!”

Never will a man flee–until he sees that there is real cause to be afraid.Ā
Never will he seek Heaven–until he is convinced that he is on his way to Hell.Ā

The religion in which there is no mention of Hell–is not the religion of John the Baptist, or of our Lord Jesus and His apostles!

But God who is rich in love and mercy reached down and saved me. His Word was a sharp sword that cut straight through my soul and showed me what His true love is, and working through my lovely wife Sarah to show, teach and grow to be a husband fit for a princess! šŸ˜€ šŸ™šŸ»

The way to do good is to amuse people!

Grace logo

The way to do good is to amuse people!

(J.C. Ryle, 1884)
Ā
A great change has taken place in the last forty years. A quantity ofĀ church workĀ is continually being carried on both by clergymen and laymen, which, however well-meant, can hardly be calledĀ Christian–and in reality has a painful tendency to throw true Christian work into the background, if not to throw it entirely out!Ā

No one, for instance, can fail to observe that a large number of professors are spending all their time and strength on church music, church decorations, church programs, and an incessant round of churchĀ attractions. Others are equally absorbed in social work, feeding the poor, and improved dwellings for everyone. Others are incessantly getting up popular concerts, secular lectures, and evening recreations. They proclaim everywhere, thatĀ the way to do good is to amuse people!

Others are always occupied withĀ secularĀ guilds, and societies, and associations–and think you very wrong and heathenish if you do not join them. Myriads ofĀ professorsĀ are restlessly busy about such things from one end of the land to the other; and superficial observers are often saying,Ā “What a great deal of church-work there is in these days!”

Now I would not for a moment be supposed to mean that all the things I have just mentioned are wrong and wicked. Yet I doubt whether the present state of things is altogether healthy. I doubt whether the work of the Holy Spirit on hearts and consciences, is not insensibly being left out in the cold and neglected. Amidst the incessant hustle and bustle about matters ofĀ entirely secondary importance–I doubt whether the sort of direct spiritual work to which the Apostles wholly gave themselves, receives as much attention as it ought.Ā

It is quite certain that musical services, and church decorations, and concerts, and bazaars, and social work, and the like–will not save souls.Ā

It is equally certain that, without repentance, and faith, and holy living, and practical, self-denying, kindly charity–no one is fit for Heaven. Do these simple, old-fashioned graces fill the place which they ought to do, in the daily proceedings of many so-called church-workers in this day? I confess I doubt it exceedingly.Ā

I certainly see on every side a vast increase of what people call “church-work.” But there is little or no increase of true religion. There undoubtedly is moreĀ showĀ andĀ glitterĀ andĀ display. But I extremely doubt whether there is more spiritual reality, and more growth of practical godliness.

Comfort, safety, strength, holiness!

(George Everard, “Talks about Home Life” 1878)

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable toĀ sympathizeĀ with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are.” Hebrews 4:15Ā

There is noĀ comfort, but in Christ’s bosom.

There is noĀ safety, but by Christ’s side.

There is noĀ strength, but in Christ’s arm.

There is noĀ holiness, but in Christ’s footsteps.

Look up and see Christ, the merciful and gracious Savior, bending over you in most tender compassion.Ā
He is very near to you. He marks . . .
Ā  each sigh,Ā
Ā  each desire,Ā
Ā  each tear,Ā

He thinks upon and sympathizes with you.

They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“TheĀ eyesĀ of the Lord are upon the righteous.
Ā HisĀ earsĀ are open unto their cry.” Psalm 34:15

The Lord observes His redeemed people with approval and tender consideration.Ā They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!Ā He watches each one of them as carefully and intently, as if there were only that one creature in the whole universe!

Thus the Lord’s eyes and ears are both turned upon His saints. His whole mind is occupied with them. If they are slighted by all others–they are never neglected by Him. He hears their cry at once, even as a mother is sure to hear her sick babe. The cry may be broken, plaintive or feeble–yet the Father’s quick ear catches each note of lament or appeal, and He is quick to answer His children’s voice!

Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

Grace logo

Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

(J.C. Ryle)

“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42Ā

We should observe what a high commendation our Lord Jesus Christ pronounced on Mary’s choice.Ā There was a deep meaning in these words. They were spoken not only for Mary’s sake, but for the sake of all Christ’s believing people in every part of the world. They were meant to encourage all true Christians . . .
Ā  to be single-eyed and whole-hearted,
Ā  to follow the Lord fully,Ā
Ā  to walk closely with God,
Ā  to make soul-business immeasurably their first business, and
Ā  to think comparatively little of the things of this fleeting world.

The true Christian’s portion is the grace of God. It is the only good thing which is substantial, satisfying, real, and lasting. The grace of God is . . .
Ā Ā better in sickness–and better in health,
Ā  better in youth–and better in old age,
Ā  better in adversity–and better in prosperity,
Ā  better in life–and better in death,
Ā  better in time–and better in eternity.Ā
No circumstance and no position can be imagined, in which it is not better for man to have the grace of God.

The true Christian’s possession shall never be taken from him.Ā
He alone, of all mankind, shall never be stripped of his inheritance.Ā
Kings must one day leave their palaces.
Rich men must one day leave their money and lands–they only hold them until they die.Ā

But the poorest saint on earth has aĀ treasureĀ of which he will never be deprived. The grace of God, and the favor of Christ–are riches which no man can take from him. They will go with him to the grave when he dies. They will rise with him in the resurrection morning, and be his to all eternity!

What doĀ weĀ know of this “better part” which Mary chose? Have we chosen it for ourselves? Can we say with truth that it is ours? Let us never rest until we can. Let us choose life, while Christ offers it to us without money and without price. Let us seek treasure in Heaven–lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

“That the world may know that You sent Me andĀ loved them even as You have loved Me!”Ā John 17:23Ā

Can you believe it . . .
Ā  thatĀ youĀ should be the object of God’s delight,
Ā  thatĀ youĀ should be the object of the Father’s love as truly as Christ is!Ā

See the amazing sacrifice which the Father made in giving Jesus to us.Ā

Think what it cost Him to tear His Well-Beloved from His bosom and send Him down below to be despised and rejected.Ā

Think what it cost Him to nail Jesus up to yonder cross, and then forsake Him and hide His face from Him, because He had laid all our sins upon Him.Ā

Oh, the love He must have had to us, thus to have made His best Beloved to become a curse for us, as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree!”Ā

I want you to get this truth right into your souls, dear friends.Ā
Do not hold it as a dry doctrine, but let it penetrate your heart.Ā

Oh, when the river ofĀ God’s great love to usĀ came rolling in like a mighty torrent, what a sea of love was there! Now we are borne onward forever by the mighty sweep of infinite love into an everlasting blessedness which tongues and lips can never fully set forth!Ā

Oh, be ravished with this!
Ā Be in ecstasy at love so amazing, so divine! The Father lovesĀ youĀ even as He loves His Son! After the same manner and sort, He loves all His redeemed people.

Can you believe it!Ā

Oh, if the love of Jesus once enters into a man’s soul . . .

Ā Ā  it will sway him with the noblest passions,
Ā Ā  it will make him a zealot for Christ,
Ā Ā  it will cast out his pride and selfishness,

We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!

Grace logo

We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!

(Charles Spurgeon, “Treasury of David“)

“The Lord raises the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy from the dunghill!” Psalm 113:7Ā

What a gracious stoop of love! He frequently lifts the lowest of mankind out of their poverty and degradation, and adopts them into His family.Ā

His gracious Spirit is continually visiting the down-trodden, giving beauty for ashes to those who are cast down, and elevating the hearts of His mourners until they shout for joy.Ā

These upliftings of grace are here ascribed directly to the divine hand, and truly those who have experienced them will not doubt the fact that it is the Lord alone who brings His people up from the dust of sorrow and death. When no hand but His can help, He interposes and the work is done.Ā

“And lifts the needy from the dunghill”Ā whereon they lay like worthless refuse, cast off and cast out–left as they thought, to rot into destruction, and to be everlastingly forgotten.Ā

How great a stoop from the height of His throne, to a dunghill! How wonderful is that power which occupies itself in lifting up beggars, all befouled with the filthiness in which they lay! For He lifts them out of the dunghill, not disdaining to search them out from amidst the base things of the earth–that He may bring to nothing the great ones, and pour contempt upon all human glorying.Ā

What a dunghill was that upon which we lay by nature!Ā

What a mass of corruption is our original estate!

What a heap of loathsomeness we have accumulated by our sinful lives!

We could never have risen out of this corruption by our own efforts–we were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!Ā

Almighty were the arms which lifted us, which are still lifting us, and will lift us into the perfection of Heaven itself!

Looking at the world through the cross!

Grace logo

Looking at the world through the cross!

(Octavius Winslow)

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14Ā

Jesus could accomplish man’s redemption in no other way than by crucifixion. He must die–and die the death of the cruel cross.Ā

What light and glory beam aroundĀ the cross!

Of what prodigies of grace, is it the instrument,Ā
of what glorious truths, is it the symbol,Ā
of what mighty transforming power, is it the source!Ā

Around the cross gathers all the light of the Old Testament economy:Ā
Ā  it explains everyĀ symbol,Ā
Ā  it substantiates everyĀ shadow,Ā
Ā  it solves everyĀ mystery,Ā
Ā  it fulfills everyĀ type,Ā
Ā  it confirms everyĀ prophecy,Ā
of that dispensation which had eternally remained unmeaning and inexplicable, but for the death of the Son of God upon the cross.Ā

Not theĀ pastĀ only–but allĀ futureĀ splendor gathers around the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It assures us of the ultimate reign of the Savior, and tells of the reward which shall spring from His sufferings. And while its one arm points to the divine counsels of eternity past–with the other it points to the future triumph and glory of Christ’s kingdom in the eternity to come! Such is the lowly yet sublime, the weak yet mighty instrument, by which the sinner is saved and God eternally glorified.Ā

The cross of Christ is . . .
Ā  the grand consummation of all preceding dispensations of God to men;
Ā  the meritorious procuring cause of all spiritual blessings to our fallen race;
Ā  the scene of Christ’s splendid victories over all His enemies and ours;
Ā  the most powerful incentive to all evangelical holiness;
Ā  the instrument which is to subjugate the world to the supremacy of Jesus;
Ā  the source of all true peace, joy and hope;
Ā  the tree beneath whose shadow all sin expires, all grace lives.Ā

The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!Ā
What a holy thrill these words produce in the heart of those who love the Savior!Ā
How significant is their meaning, how precious is their influence!Ā

Marvelous and irresistible, is the power of the cross! The cross of Christ has . . .
Ā  subdued many a rebellious will;Ā
Ā  broken many a marble heart;Ā
Ā  laid low many a vaunting foe;Ā
Ā  overcome and triumphed, when all other instruments have failed;Ā
Ā  transformed the lion like heart of man, into the lamb like heart of Christ!Ā

When lifted up in its own bare simplicity and inimitable grandeur–the cross of Christ has won and attracted millions to its faith, admiration, and love!Ā

What a marvelous power does this cross of Jesus possess! It changes the Christian’s entire judgment of the world.Ā Looking at the world through the cross–his opinion is totally revolutionized.Ā
He sees the world as it really is–a sinful, empty, vain thing.Ā
He learns its iniquity, in that it crucified the Lord of life and glory.Ā
His expectations from the world, and his love to the world, are transformed.Ā
He has found another object of love–the Savior whom the world cast out and slew.Ā
His love to the world is destroyed by that power which alone could destroy it–the crucifying power of the cross.Ā

It is the cross which eclipses, in the view of the true believer, the glory and attraction of every other object.Ā

What is the weapon by which faith combats with, and overcomes the world? What but the cross of Jesus!Ā

Just as the natural eye, gazing for a while upon the sun, is blinded for the moment to all other objects by its overpowering effulgence; so to the believer, concentrating his mind upon the glory of the crucified Savior, studying closely the wonders ofĀ graceandĀ loveĀ andĀ truthĀ meeting in the cross–the world with all its attraction fades into the full darkness of an eclipse.Ā

Christ and His cross infinitely better than the world and its trinkets!Ā

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14Ā

The delight which God has in His redeemed people!

Grace logo

The delight which God has in His redeemed people!Ā

“I willĀ rejoiceĀ over them to do them good.” Jeremiah 32:41Ā

“AsĀ a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,Ā so your God willĀ rejoiceĀ over you!”Ā Isaiah 62:5Ā

The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take greatĀ delightĀ in you . . . He willĀ rejoiceĀ over you with singing!” Zephaniah 3:17Ā

How heart-cheering to the believer, isĀ theĀ delightĀ which God has in His redeemed people!

We cannot see any reason inĀ ourselvesĀ why the Lord should take pleasure in us. We cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan, being burdened; conscious of our sinfulness, and deploring our unfaithfulness.Ā

And we fear thatĀ God’s peopleĀ cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies, that they may rather lament our infirmities, than admire our graces.Ā

But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery–that as the bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so does the Lord rejoice over us!Ā

We do not read anywhere that God delights in the cloud-capped mountains, or the sparkling stars–but we do read that His delights are with the sons of men.Ā

We do not find it written that evenĀ angelsĀ give His soul delight; nor does He say, concerning cherubim and seraphim, “You shall be calledĀ Hephzibah, for the LordĀ delightsĀ in you”; but He does say all that to poor fallen creatures like ourselves, debased and depraved by sin–but redeemed and saved by His grace.Ā

In what strong language He expresses His delight in His people! Who could have conceived of the eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, “He will take greatĀ delightĀ in you . . . He will rejoice over you withĀ singing!”Ā

As He looked upon the world He had made, He said, “It is very good”. But when He beheld those who are the purchase of Jesus’ blood, His own chosen ones, it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer–but overflowed in divine exclamations of joy.Ā

Should not we utter ourĀ grateful responseĀ to such a marvelous declaration of His love, and sing, “I will rejoice in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”Ā

May we see our sins

May we see our sins

(
Henry Law, “Family Prayers”)

O God the Holy Spirit, have mercy upon us miserable sinners. Move, we beseech You, in our disordered hearts. Remove the deformities of unruly desires and hateful lusts. Chase away the mists and darkness of unbelief. Brighten our inner man with the pure light of truth. Sow abundantly the seeds of righteousness. Make our souls fragrant as the garden of the Lord. Enrich them with every godly fruit. Beautify them with heavenly grace. Be our comforter, our guide, our light, our sanctification.Ā

Especially take of the things of Christ, and show them with enlarged power to our longing souls. May we daily learn more of His love, His grace, His tender compassion, His faithfulness, and His beauty. May we delight ourselves in Him with increased delight.Ā Lead us to the cross, and show us in His wounds–the hateful character of sin.Ā May we see our sins, as . . .Ā
Ā  theĀ nailsĀ which transfixed Him,
Ā  theĀ cordsĀ which bound Him,
Ā  theĀ swordĀ which pierced Him,
Ā  theĀ thornsĀ which tore Him,
Ā  theĀ tauntsĀ which stung Him.Ā

Help us to read in His cruel death, the reality and immensity of His love.Ā

Open to us the wondrous volumes of glorious truth in the cry,Ā “It is finished!”Ā
Our atonement is forever achieved,Ā
our debt is fully paid,Ā
all our guilt is washed away,
all our sins most righteously forgiven,
our souls saved,
Hell vanquished,
the devil crushed,
Heaven won, andĀ
eternity of glory our rightful home!

Holy Spirit, deepen in us these saving lessons.Ā
Write them with Your finger on the tablets of our hearts.Ā

May our walk be . . .
Ā  sin-loathing,
Ā  sin-fleeing,
Ā  Christ-loving,
Ā  God-fearing!

There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!

Grace logo

There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!

(Charles Spurgeon)Ā

“Be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age!” Matthew 28:20Ā

It is well that there is One who is ever the same, and who is ever with us. It is well thatĀ there is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life. O my soul, do not set your affections upon rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures–but set your heart upon Him who abides forever faithful to you. Do not build your house upon the moving quicksands of a deceitful world–but found your hopes upon this rock, which, amid descending rain and roaring floods, shall stand immovably secure!

My soul, I charge you–lay up yourĀ treasureĀ in the only secure cabinet; store yourĀ jewelsĀ where you can never lose them. Put yourĀ allĀ in Christ; set . . .
Ā  all yourĀ affectionsĀ on His person,
Ā  all yourĀ hopeĀ in His merit,
Ā  all yourĀ trustĀ in His efficacious blood,
Ā  all yourĀ joyĀ in His presence,
and so you may laugh at loss and defy difficulties.Ā

Remember thatĀ all the flowers in the world’s garden wither and die–and the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth.Ā Death’s black extinguisherĀ must soon put out your candle. Oh! how sweet to haveĀ sunlight–when theĀ candleĀ is gone! TheĀ dark floodĀ must soon roll between you and all you have!Ā

So wed your heart to Him who will never leave you. Trust yourself with Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death’s stream, and who will land you safely on the celestial shore, and make you sit with Him in heavenly places forever!Ā

Go, sorrowing son of affliction–tell your secret troubles to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Trust all your concerns with Him . . .
Ā  who never can be taken from you,
Ā  who will never leave you, and
Ā  who will never let you leave Him, even “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”Ā

“I am with you always,”Ā is enough for my soul to live upon–though all others forsake me!

“I’ve never seen so clearly since going blind” 20 Years Of Sight-loss!

Me playing my Taylor K22ce at church and in front of a cross on the wall

Hi friends. As it is 20 years to the day since i went blind…I thought i’d share one of my older posts(yet updated) from 4 years ago when i was asked to share a little of what i went through when i lost my sight at 24.

I really hope that you’ll have the time to read it, and that it blesses you in some small way?!Ā

Here Goes…

I was asked by our Minister Nik if i would share my Testimony in the parade service. The theme was ā€˜Faith through Adversity’, Nik said “i can ask you some straight forward questions, it will only take about 5 minutes(or so we thought)ā€ ā€œYeah, ok, if you think it will help?ā€.

Sunday 8th May 2016…

Walking into the church building Sunday morning, it was quite full, as it was parade service, the scouts and other uniformed groups were there, but Nik found us seats at the front, then showed me up the steps and where i’d stand to speak, after testing the microphone i remembered the steps and sat back down.Ā

As i’m blind, i can’t use any notes, so i spent a little time trying to etch some answer headings into my mind, hoping i’d not veer too far off track. I then prayed that i’d use this time to Glorify Him, as i talked about the Truth that sets us free, and how i’m not ashamed of the Gospel, it’s the power of God unto Salvation to all who believe…please make it real(be careful praying this, lol).

It;s time…

Steve, we are looking at people who have showed faith in difficult circumstances and I have asked you to share some of your story with us.

Many people here, even those who have seen you around at various church events may not know that you are blind.

My Testimony…

Nik stood next to me at the microphone and started with the first 2 questions:

Have you always been blind? How and when did you loose your sight?

I explained i’d been fully sighted until i was 24, and after 2 brain haemorrhages(March – July 2000) that burst my optic nerve, i’m now registered blind and have Severe Hypertensive Retinopathy.

“How did that change your life?”

I said ā€œI can only scratch the surface this morning, but if ever you see me walking around here or in town, please ask me anything. But now i’ll try and sketch you a quick picture and give you a flavour of what happened…”

ā€œI went to the gym 6-7 days a week, played football most evenings and was quite violent, acting the tough guy. Ā I wasn’t a Christian, i hadn’t been born again, or even been inside a church building…so…As i stepped out of the eye consultants office after being told i’d be blind for the rest of my life, it was out of character but i collapsed on the floor sobbingg my eyes out. And as my crying out got a little too loud they pulled me into a small empty room….And this was the easy bitā€.

ā€œFollowing this was pure isolation… all my football mates left me, i lost my job, my car and ability to do anything…i lost everything, i was completely broken, and on top of that i was left to my acusing thoughts ā€œNobody wants you, you’re useless now, unwanted, rejected, unloved and unlovable!!ā€

Suddenly, as i was telling my story…

My mouth was silenced, an image of Jesus in Glory(Revelation 1) filled my mind, it wasĀ so clear(not blurred by my blindness)Ā I could see His flaming eyes of judgment…then…the image changed, it was Jesus on the cross, now His eyes were filled with Mercy, Compassion & Grace, and while looking down straight at me he said ā€œI did this for you, so that you can live. I…LOVE…YOU!!!

I started sobbing uncontrollably, and it took a couple of minutes for me to try and start talking again….but more sobbing…i was completely undone. But these tears were different!

I already knew He’d given His life so i could live. He’d come down so farĀ to save me it is immeasurable. His blood washed me clean, white as snow. He’s forgiven me all my sins, past, present and future, and there is no more condemnation for me, it is finished!

I’d been Ā praying for so long for God to ā€œBreak my heart for what broke Hisā€ and sang the songs many times, but rarely had i caught a glimpse of the true cost of His Love, and His free gift of Grace to those who Repent and Believe in Him. I knew He wanted me to share the True Gospel to people listening(and now reading), as it alone is the only Hope. It is the Power of God unto Salvation for anyone that believes.

Still sobbing, i continued…

My every word was a different pitch but i said ā€œMy pit was so dark, my accusing thoughts were too heavy, and this led to a daily cycle of waking up and trying to kill myself…failing, which made me feel worse…then drinking so much i could drown them out for the rest of the day, until i woke the next day, then it started again.Ā

I didn’t have the strength to kill myself, and i didn’t have the strength to live…i was without God, and without Hope!

Nik, who’s hand was rested on my shoulder asked question 4 “I know you were deeply unhappy at the time, what changed that?”

The world followed it’s pattern and sent me to Counselling, then Psychotherapy & finally Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, they didn’t work, they all had no answer for me, they couldn’t reach far enough down to pull me out. I needed a Saviour, I needed the light of the Gospel!Ā

The Good News &Ā Lovely Sarah

Meeting Sarah changed my life! I have no idea how she’s put up with me. She’s Ā been so patient and long suffering as i tried attacking her Faith and this Jesus! But she kept on loving me. Sarah always seemed to have a rock to stand on no matter how bad things got for her, and i was being dragged deeper into the sinking sand. She always had this Blessed Hope that i didn’t,

Jesus worked through Sarah to shine the light of the Gospel, the Good News i was dying for.Ā

Words failed me as i was trying to describe how much i love Sarah, so when my mind filled with thoughts of how far we’ve grown together in love…i broke down again.Ā

The sobbing was still making me pause every few words, but mentioned Jesus doesn’t want to see anyone perish, but he pursues you, He has come to seek and save that which is lost. He loves you and no matter how bad or hopeless you think you are, He’ll keep coming with His free gift of Salvation!

Nik asked Question 5 “some people would say that your life must be worse now, would you agree with them?”

I’d gone way over my time slot, and i was almost pulled away from the mic as i was so overwhelmed…BUT i knew these tears were not about me, or my losses. I had 1 focus and that was to share the Truth that sets us free. I had no feeling of sorrow or pain. I knew it must have seemed like this to the congregation, and i thought they’d stick me in a counselling room when i’d finished!

The Holy Spirit was filling me like never before, and made the Power of the Gospel so real to me i almost exploded.

I continued ā€œI wouldn’t agree with anyone who thinks(or measures) life by how good our circumstances are. I’d lead them to 2 Corinthians 4 & 5 where it talks about living by Faith, not by Sight, and now that we are born again in the Spirit, we should walk by the Spirit. Not living for things that are seen which are temporary(like my sight loss), but living for the unseen which is Eternalā€

ā€œI used to hate this song, but now i’d play it every service if i could…have you heard Amazing Grace, the Chris Tomlin version? If you pass me in the street you’ll normally hear me singing or humming these words:”

“Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.Ā I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see. My chains are gone I’ve been set free. My God, my Saviour has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy reigns. Unending love, amazing graceā€.

ā€œI’ve never seen so clearly since going blindā€ This is one of my fave sayings.Ā šŸ˜€Ā

Nik then walked me back to my seat next to Sarah. The church was completely silent, it had been silent since i first started sobbing. I could feel Sarah was upset as she didn’t react for a while, then she said ā€œPeople kept on running up and passing me tissuesā€. Nik sat down next to Sarah, and Sarah said ā€œYou’re not borrowing him again to speakā€.Ā

After the service people came over and said they really connected with the things i said, although i think everyone thinks i’m back in dark depression again, lol.

He showed me the reality and Power of transformation in His Gospel, and how vital it is to share it, as Jesus is the Ā Way, the Truth and the Life and no-one gets to Ā the Father but by Him. He’s the forgiver of Sins, breaker of chains, and the only Salvation for Eternal Life in Heaven.

John 3:14-21Ā New King James Version (NKJV)

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but[a] have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 ā€œHe who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.ā€

I felt i needed to share this post to try and explain a little more of what was happening to me, and maybe reach out to someone who is struggling with the creeping death called Depression,or who is just simply lost and without God, and without Hope.

A Holy New Year’s Resolution!

A Holy New Year’s Resolution!

(Matthew Henry)

“My times are in Your hand!” Psalm 31:15

Firmly believing that my times are in God’s hand, I here submit myself and all my affairs for the ensuing year, to the wise and gracious disposal of God’s divine providence. Whether God appoints for me . . . .

health — or sickness,
peace — or trouble,
comforts — or crosses,
life — or death

— may His holy will be done!

All my time, strength, and service, I devote to the honor of the Lord Jesus — and even my common actions. It is my earnest expectation, hope, and desire, my constant aim and endeavor — that Jesus Christ may be magnified in me.

In everything I have to do — my entire dependence is upon Jesus Christ for strength. And whatever I do in word or deed, I desire to do all in His name, to make Him my Alpha and Omega. I have all from Him — and I would use all for Him.

If this should prove a year of affliction, a sorrowful year to me — I will fetch all my supports and comforts from the Lord Jesus and stay myself upon Him, His everlasting consolations, and the good hope I have in Him through grace.

And if it should be my dying year — then my times are in the hand of the Lord Jesus. And with a humble reliance upon His mediation, I would venture into the eternal world looking for the blessed hope. Dying as well as living — Jesus Christ will, I trust, be gain and advantage to me.

Oh, that the grace of God may be sufficient for me, to keep me always in a humble sense of my own unworthiness, weakness, folly, and infirmity — together with a humble dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ for daily grace and strength.

The biggest loser!

The biggest loser!

There are usually two sides:

the one dangerous—the other safe; the one is uncertain—and the other is sure.

It is always the wisest—to be found on the safe side!

Look at the unbeliever:
He denies the Bible to be God’s book.
He walks by his own reason.
He gratifies his senses and his lusts.
He lives in sin.
He must soon die.
He has no Savior.
He has no true hope.

If the Bible is false—then he is safe; BUT if the Bible is true—then he is damned forever!

He is certainly not on the safe side!

There are many things in the Bible which he does not like.
He is prejudiced against it.
It never prophecies good concerning him—but always evil.
It requires him to change his present sinful course—but he loves it.
He loves sin—and the Bible condemns it.
He gratifies the lusts of the flesh—and the Bible bids him to mortify them.

In a word, there is as much opposition between the Bible and him—as between light and darkness, holiness and sin, truth and error. Therefore he hates it!

At the best, with him all is uncertain, unsatisfactory, and vexatious.

He is certainly not on the safe side!

Now look at the true Christian:
He believes the Bible to be from God. He has examined it. He has evidence of its inspiration in his heart. He fully believes it.
What the Bible says of himself as a sinner—he knows to be true.
What it says of Jesus as a Savior—he has proved to be a fact.
As guilty—he has applied to God for pardon, and obtained it.
As impure—he has sought the cleansing operations of the Holy Spirit, and has experienced them.
His guilt is gone—therefore he has no slavish fears.
His soul is justified—therefore he has peace with God.
He approves of the inspired precepts—and regulates his life by them.
He carries his cares to God—and is sustained under them.
He realizes that God is his Friend, his Father, and his everlasting Portion.
He is peaceful.
He is often happy.
To him death has no sting—and eternity has no terror.
He knows Jesus as his Savior—and trusts in Him.
He knows God as his Father—and walks with Him.
He knows the Holy Spirit as his comforting Teacher—and listens to Him.

He is, perhaps, more tried than the unbeliever—but he has supports, consolations, and pleasures—of which the unbeliever knows nothing. He lives to bless others, to honor God, to prepare for a glorious immortality.

He would not change his worst day—for the unbeliever’s best day!

He is on the safe side!

If the unbeliever should be right—then the Christian is no loser.

But if the Christian is right—and he is—then the unbeliever is the biggest loser—an infinite loser!

Reader, on which side are you? There is but one safe side.

There is no safety for a sinner now—but at the Cross!

There will be no safety at death and judgment—but in Christ!

He who is on the safe side now—will be on the safe side then!

There will be no changing sides then!

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit upon His glorious throne! All the nations will be gathered in His presence, and He will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at His right hand—and the goats at His left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father—inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world!’ (the safe side)Ā Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones—into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons!’ (the perilous side)Ā And they will go away into eternal punishment—but the righteous will go into eternal life!” Matthew 25:31-46

Thankfulness To God

Thankfulness To God

“God has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; He provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:17

We ofttimes forget that the common mercies of life are evidences of our Father’s loving thought and care for His children. There is no such thing as ‘chance’ in this world. God sends the rains, orders the seasons, and brings the harvests. In enjoying the gifts — we should not forget the Giver. In accepting and using the blessings — we should not fail to see the Hand which brings them to us! (J.R. Miller)

“What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits to me?” Psalm 116:12

The Christian, as he journeys onwards in the pathway of life, ought frequently to look back, and review the way by which God has led him. If we would keep alive our gratitude — if we would have it to increase more and more, until, like a holy flame, it burns within us — we must often, in thought, retrace the varied turnings and windings of our earthly pilgrimage.

We are so prone, amid our daily duties and our interaction with the world, to forget and overlook the divine benefits received, that only by a careful and frequent retrospect, can we continue, from day to day, cherishing a spirit of true and ever-increasing thankfulness to God. But, the oftener we make the review, the greater cause will we have for saying, with David, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my father’s house, that you have brought me hitherto?”

Christian! you cannot indeed reckon up all the benefits you have received from the hand of God — for they are as numerous as the stars of heaven or the drops of the mighty ocean! Your common mercies — alas! too lightly valued . . .

the air you breathe,
the return of the gladsome sunlight,
the succession of the seasons, and
the quiet and gentle stillness and repose of night

— all these, with their unnumbered host of attendant blessings, are scattered on your path! (John MacDuff)

Let us praise God for common mercies, for they prove to be uncommonly precious — when they are once taken away! (Charles Spurgeon)

Funny Isn’t It?

Funny Isn’t It?

Funny how a $100 “looks” so big when you take it to church,
but so small when you take it to the mall.

Funny how long it takes to serve God for an hour,
but how quickly a team plays 60 minutes of basketball.

Funny how long a couple of hours spent at church are,
but how short they are when watching a movie.

Funny how we can’t think of anything to say when we pray, but
don’t have difficulty thinking of things to talk about to a friend.

Funny how we get thrilled when a baseball game goes into extra innings,
but we complain when a sermon is longer than the regular time.

Funny how hard it is to read a chapter in the bible,
but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a best selling novel.

Funny how people want to get a front seat at any game or concert,
but scramble to get a back seat at church services.

Funny how we need 2 or 3 weeks advance notice to fit a church
event into our schedule, but can adjust our schedule for other
events at the last moment.

Funny how hard it is for people to learn a simple gospel well
enough to tell others, but how simple it is for the same people
to understand and repeat gossip.

Funny how everyone wants to go to heaven provided they do not
have to believe, or to think, or to say, or do anything.

Funny how you can send a thousand ‘jokes’ through e-mail and
they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages
regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.

Funny Isn’t It?

Are you laughing?
Are you thinking?

The evangelistic methods of our present golden-calf Christianity!

Ā The evangelistic methods of our present golden-calf Christianity!

Any objection to the evangelistic methods of our present golden-calf Christianity, is met with the triumphant reply, “But we are winning the lost!”

And what are you winning them to?

To true discipleship?
To cross-carrying?
To self-denial?
To separation from the world?
To crucifixion of the flesh?
To holy living?
To nobility of character?
To a despising of the world’s treasures?
To total committal to Christ?

Of course, the answer to all these questions is NO!

The “Hell Fire Club”

The “Hell Fire Club”

“Means for Restoring the Banished” )

Mr. Thorpe was a member of an ‘infidel’ club. In those days infidelity was more blasphemous than now. This infidel society took the name of the “Hell Fire Club”. Among their amusements was that of holding imitations of religious services, and exhibiting mimicries of popular ministers.

Thorpe went to hear George Whitfield preach, that he might caricature him before his profane associates. He listened to Whitfield so carefully that he caught his tones and his manner, and somewhat of his doctrines.

When the “Hell Fire Club” met to see his caricature of Whitfield, Thorpe opened the Bible that he might take a text to preach from it after the manner of Whitfield. His eye fell on the passage, “Except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.” As he spoke upon that text he was carried beyond himself, lost all thought of mockery, spoke as one in earnest, and was the means of his own conversion!

He was carried by the force of truth beyond his own intention, like one who would play in a river, and is swept away by its current.

Even the scoffer may be reached by the arrows of truth! Scripture has often been the sole means in the hands of its divine Author of converting the soul.

“For the Word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are.” Hebrews 4:12

“After his amazing conversion, Thorpe became a noted preacher of the gospel.”Ā

2 Peter 1 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Growth in Christian Virtue

1 [a]Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Jesus Christ,

To those who have [b]received and possess [by God’s will] a precious faith of the [c]same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace [that special sense of spiritual well-being] be multiplied to you in the [true, intimate] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 For His divine power has bestowed on us [absolutely] everything necessary for [a dynamic spiritual] life and godliness, through [d]true and personal knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4 For by these He has bestowed on us His precious and magnificent promises [of inexpressible value], so that by them you may escape from the immoral freedom that is in the world because of disreputable desire, and become sharers of the divine nature. 5 For this very reason, applying your diligence [to the divine promises, make every effort] in [exercising] your faith to, [e]develop moral excellence, and in moral excellence, knowledge (insight, understanding), 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, steadfastness, and in your steadfastness, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly affection, and in your brotherly affection, [develop Christian] love [that is, learn to unselfishly seek the best for others and to do things for their benefit]. 8 For as these qualities are yours and are increasing [in you as you grow toward spiritual maturity], they will keep you from being useless and unproductive in regard to the true knowledge and greater understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is blind—shortsighted [closing his spiritual eyes to the truth], having become oblivious to the fact that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, believers, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you [be sure that your behavior reflects and confirms your relationship with God]; for by [f]doing these things [actively developing these virtues], you will never stumble [in your spiritual growth and will live a life that leads others away from sin]; 11 for in this way entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly provided to you.

12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are established in the truth which is [g]held firmly in your grasp. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this earthly tent, to inspire you by reminding you, 14 knowing that the laying aside of this earthly tent of mine is imminent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 Moreover, I will diligently endeavor [to see to it] that even after my departure you will be able, at all times, to call these things to mind.

Losses, crosses, disappointments and bereavements.

Steel Quote Logo

“Unto you therefore who believe — He is precious!” 1 Peter 2:7

Christ is especially precious to believers — when the emptiness of the world is discovered. The soul having tried the world, has found it . . .

false and fickle,
an empty cistern,
a dry well,
a cloud without water,
only vanity and vexation of spirit!

The Christian has experienced that . . .
the world’s pleasures — end in pain,
its honors — end in disgrace,
and its wealth — ends in absolute poverty.

Now turning from the world, to Jesus — it finds . . .

solid happiness,
substantial pleasure,
full supplies.

It obtains . . .
a deep and lasting peace which passes all understanding,
unsearchable riches in Christ, and
honors which will never pass away.

O how precious is Jesus, when this world appears to be a valley of tears! Almost everything earthly is at times calculated to . . .

cause sorrow,
fill us with sadness,
and draw forth tears.
Losses, crosses, disappointments and bereavements — all conspire to make us sad. Earth is to us a Valley of Achor — the place of trouble and sorrow.

Now turning to Jesus, we find a friend who loves at all times, and a brother born for adversity.
He makes up for every loss,
He sanctifies every disappointment,
and He fills for us every relation.

His presence is . . .

like a flowing spring — in a dreary desert,
like a cheering fire — on a piercing winter’s night,
and like a happy home — to the exhausted traveler.

O how precious is Jesus now!

(James Smith, “Christ Precious!” 1861)

Praying

Please click the metal quote logo so view many more quotes on iChristian

ā€œOh! my ministering brethren! Much of our praying is but giving God advice! Our praying is discolored with ambition, either for ourselves or for our denomination. Perish the thought! Our goal must be God alone. It is His honor that is sullied, His blessed Son who is ignored, His laws broken, His name profaned, His Book forgotten, His house made a circus of social efforts.ā€

Leonard Ravenhill, Why Revival Tarries
