They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“TheĀ eyesĀ of the Lord are upon the righteous.
Ā HisĀ earsĀ are open unto their cry.” Psalm 34:15

The Lord observes His redeemed people with approval and tender consideration.Ā They are so dear to Him, that He cannot take His eyes off them!Ā He watches each one of them as carefully and intently, as if there were only that one creature in the whole universe!

Thus the Lord’s eyes and ears are both turned upon His saints. His whole mind is occupied with them. If they are slighted by all others–they are never neglected by Him. He hears their cry at once, even as a mother is sure to hear her sick babe. The cry may be broken, plaintive or feeble–yet the Father’s quick ear catches each note of lament or appeal, and He is quick to answer His children’s voice!

“TheĀ eyesĀ of the Lord watch over those who do right,
Ā and HisĀ earsĀ areĀ
attentive to their prayers.”Ā 1 Peter 3:12Ā

Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

Lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

(J.C. Ryle)

“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42Ā

We should observe what a high commendation our Lord Jesus Christ pronounced on Mary’s choice.Ā There was a deep meaning in these words. They were spoken not only for Mary’s sake, but for the sake of all Christ’s believing people in every part of the world. They were meant to encourage all true Christians . . .
Ā  to be single-eyed and whole-hearted,
Ā  to follow the Lord fully,Ā
Ā  to walk closely with God,
Ā  to make soul-business immeasurably their first business, and
Ā  to think comparatively little of the things of this fleeting world.

The true Christian’s portion is the grace of God. It is the only good thing which is substantial, satisfying, real, and lasting. The grace of God is . . .
Ā Ā better in sickness–and better in health,
Ā  better in youth–and better in old age,
Ā  better in adversity–and better in prosperity,
Ā  better in life–and better in death,
Ā  better in time–and better in eternity.Ā
No circumstance and no position can be imagined, in which it is not better for man to have the grace of God.

The true Christian’s possession shall never be taken from him.Ā
He alone, of all mankind, shall never be stripped of his inheritance.Ā
Kings must one day leave their palaces.
Rich men must one day leave their money and lands–they only hold them until they die.Ā

But the poorest saint on earth has aĀ treasureĀ of which he will never be deprived. The grace of God, and the favor of Christ–are riches which no man can take from him. They will go with him to the grave when he dies. They will rise with him in the resurrection morning, and be his to all eternity!

What doĀ weĀ know of this “better part” which Mary chose? Have we chosen it for ourselves? Can we say with truth that it is ours? Let us never rest until we can. Let us choose life, while Christ offers it to us without money and without price. Let us seek treasure in Heaven–lest we awake to find that we are paupers forevermore!

It Is Grace

Grace logo

It is grace at the beginning, and grace at the end.Ā  So that when youĀ and I come to lie upon our death beds,Ā  the one thing that should comfortĀ and help and strengthen us there is the thing that helped us in the beginning.Ā  Not what we have been, not what we have done, but the grace of God in Jesus Christ our Lord.Ā  The Christian life starts with grace,Ā it must continue with grace, it ends with grace.Ā  Grace wondrous grace.Ā  By the grace of God I am what I am.Ā  Yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

Oh, be ravished with this!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“That the world may know that You sent Me andĀ loved them even as You have loved Me!”Ā John 17:23Ā

Can you believe it . . .
Ā  thatĀ youĀ should be the object of God’s delight,
Ā  thatĀ youĀ should be the object of the Father’s love as truly as Christ is!Ā

See the amazing sacrifice which the Father made in giving Jesus to us.Ā

Think what it cost Him to tear His Well-Beloved from His bosom and send Him down below to be despised and rejected.Ā

Think what it cost Him to nail Jesus up to yonder cross, and then forsake Him and hide His face from Him, because He had laid all our sins upon Him.Ā

Oh, the love He must have had to us, thus to have made His best Beloved to become a curse for us, as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree!”Ā

I want you to get this truth right into your souls, dear friends.Ā
Do not hold it as a dry doctrine, but let it penetrate your heart.Ā

Oh, when the river ofĀ God’s great love to usĀ came rolling in like a mighty torrent, what a sea of love was there! Now we are borne onward forever by the mighty sweep of infinite love into an everlasting blessedness which tongues and lips can never fully set forth!Ā

Oh, be ravished with this!
Ā Be in ecstasy at love so amazing, so divine! The Father lovesĀ youĀ even as He loves His Son! After the same manner and sort, He loves all His redeemed people.

Can you believe it!Ā

Oh, if the love of Jesus once enters into a man’s soul . . .
Ā Ā  it will forever transform him,
Ā Ā  it will sway him with the noblest passions,
Ā Ā  it will make him a zealot for Christ,
Ā Ā  it will cast out his pride and selfishness,
Ā Ā  it will change him into the image of Christ, and
Ā Ā  fit him to dwell in Heaven where love is eternally perfected.

We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!

Grace logo

We were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!

(Charles Spurgeon, “Treasury of David“)

“The Lord raises the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy from the dunghill!” Psalm 113:7Ā

What a gracious stoop of love! He frequently lifts the lowest of mankind out of their poverty and degradation, and adopts them into His family.Ā

His gracious Spirit is continually visiting the down-trodden, giving beauty for ashes to those who are cast down, and elevating the hearts of His mourners until they shout for joy.Ā

These upliftings of grace are here ascribed directly to the divine hand, and truly those who have experienced them will not doubt the fact that it is the Lord alone who brings His people up from the dust of sorrow and death. When no hand but His can help, He interposes and the work is done.Ā

“And lifts the needy from the dunghill”Ā whereon they lay like worthless refuse, cast off and cast out–left as they thought, to rot into destruction, and to be everlastingly forgotten.Ā

How great a stoop from the height of His throne, to a dunghill! How wonderful is that power which occupies itself in lifting up beggars, all befouled with the filthiness in which they lay! For He lifts them out of the dunghill, not disdaining to search them out from amidst the base things of the earth–that He may bring to nothing the great ones, and pour contempt upon all human glorying.Ā

What a dunghill was that upon which we lay by nature!Ā

What a mass of corruption is our original estate!

What a heap of loathsomeness we have accumulated by our sinful lives!

We could never have risen out of this corruption by our own efforts–we were dead men rotting in a dunghill of sin!Ā

Almighty were the arms which lifted us, which are still lifting us, and will lift us into the perfection of Heaven itself!

Looking at the world through the cross!

Grace logo

Looking at the world through the cross!

(Octavius Winslow)

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14Ā

Jesus could accomplish man’s redemption in no other way than by crucifixion. He must die–and die the death of the cruel cross.Ā

What light and glory beam aroundĀ the cross!

Of what prodigies of grace, is it the instrument,Ā
of what glorious truths, is it the symbol,Ā
of what mighty transforming power, is it the source!Ā

Around the cross gathers all the light of the Old Testament economy:Ā
Ā  it explains everyĀ symbol,Ā
Ā  it substantiates everyĀ shadow,Ā
Ā  it solves everyĀ mystery,Ā
Ā  it fulfills everyĀ type,Ā
Ā  it confirms everyĀ prophecy,Ā
of that dispensation which had eternally remained unmeaning and inexplicable, but for the death of the Son of God upon the cross.Ā

Not theĀ pastĀ only–but allĀ futureĀ splendor gathers around the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. It assures us of the ultimate reign of the Savior, and tells of the reward which shall spring from His sufferings. And while its one arm points to the divine counsels of eternity past–with the other it points to the future triumph and glory of Christ’s kingdom in the eternity to come! Such is the lowly yet sublime, the weak yet mighty instrument, by which the sinner is saved and God eternally glorified.Ā

The cross of Christ is . . .
Ā  the grand consummation of all preceding dispensations of God to men;
Ā  the meritorious procuring cause of all spiritual blessings to our fallen race;
Ā  the scene of Christ’s splendid victories over all His enemies and ours;
Ā  the most powerful incentive to all evangelical holiness;
Ā  the instrument which is to subjugate the world to the supremacy of Jesus;
Ā  the source of all true peace, joy and hope;
Ā  the tree beneath whose shadow all sin expires, all grace lives.Ā

The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!Ā
What a holy thrill these words produce in the heart of those who love the Savior!Ā
How significant is their meaning, how precious is their influence!Ā

Marvelous and irresistible, is the power of the cross! The cross of Christ has . . .
Ā  subdued many a rebellious will;Ā
Ā  broken many a marble heart;Ā
Ā  laid low many a vaunting foe;Ā
Ā  overcome and triumphed, when all other instruments have failed;Ā
Ā  transformed the lion like heart of man, into the lamb like heart of Christ!Ā

When lifted up in its own bare simplicity and inimitable grandeur–the cross of Christ has won and attracted millions to its faith, admiration, and love!Ā

What a marvelous power does this cross of Jesus possess! It changes the Christian’s entire judgment of the world.Ā Looking at the world through the cross–his opinion is totally revolutionized.Ā
He sees the world as it really is–a sinful, empty, vain thing.Ā
He learns its iniquity, in that it crucified the Lord of life and glory.Ā
His expectations from the world, and his love to the world, are transformed.Ā
He has found another object of love–the Savior whom the world cast out and slew.Ā
His love to the world is destroyed by that power which alone could destroy it–the crucifying power of the cross.Ā

It is the cross which eclipses, in the view of the true believer, the glory and attraction of every other object.Ā

What is the weapon by which faith combats with, and overcomes the world? What but the cross of Jesus!Ā

Just as the natural eye, gazing for a while upon the sun, is blinded for the moment to all other objects by its overpowering effulgence; so to the believer, concentrating his mind upon the glory of the crucified Savior, studying closely the wonders ofĀ graceandĀ loveĀ andĀ truthĀ meeting in the cross–the world with all its attraction fades into the full darkness of an eclipse.Ā

Christ and His cross infinitely better than the world and its trinkets!Ā

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14Ā

The delight which God has in His redeemed people!

Grace logo

The delight which God has in His redeemed people!Ā

“I willĀ rejoiceĀ over them to do them good.” Jeremiah 32:41Ā

“AsĀ a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,Ā so your God willĀ rejoiceĀ over you!”Ā Isaiah 62:5Ā

The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take greatĀ delightĀ in you . . . He willĀ rejoiceĀ over you with singing!” Zephaniah 3:17Ā

How heart-cheering to the believer, isĀ theĀ delightĀ which God has in His redeemed people!

We cannot see any reason inĀ ourselvesĀ why the Lord should take pleasure in us. We cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan, being burdened; conscious of our sinfulness, and deploring our unfaithfulness.Ā

And we fear thatĀ God’s peopleĀ cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies, that they may rather lament our infirmities, than admire our graces.Ā

But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery–that as the bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so does the Lord rejoice over us!Ā

We do not read anywhere that God delights in the cloud-capped mountains, or the sparkling stars–but we do read that His delights are with the sons of men.Ā

We do not find it written that evenĀ angelsĀ give His soul delight; nor does He say, concerning cherubim and seraphim, “You shall be calledĀ Hephzibah, for the LordĀ delightsĀ in you”; but He does say all that to poor fallen creatures like ourselves, debased and depraved by sin–but redeemed and saved by His grace.Ā

In what strong language He expresses His delight in His people! Who could have conceived of the eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, “He will take greatĀ delightĀ in you . . . He will rejoice over you withĀ singing!”Ā

As He looked upon the world He had made, He said, “It is very good”. But when He beheld those who are the purchase of Jesus’ blood, His own chosen ones, it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer–but overflowed in divine exclamations of joy.Ā

Should not we utter ourĀ grateful responseĀ to such a marvelous declaration of His love, and sing, “I will rejoice in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”Ā

May we see our sins

May we see our sins

(
Henry Law, “Family Prayers”)

O God the Holy Spirit, have mercy upon us miserable sinners. Move, we beseech You, in our disordered hearts. Remove the deformities of unruly desires and hateful lusts. Chase away the mists and darkness of unbelief. Brighten our inner man with the pure light of truth. Sow abundantly the seeds of righteousness. Make our souls fragrant as the garden of the Lord. Enrich them with every godly fruit. Beautify them with heavenly grace. Be our comforter, our guide, our light, our sanctification.Ā

Especially take of the things of Christ, and show them with enlarged power to our longing souls. May we daily learn more of His love, His grace, His tender compassion, His faithfulness, and His beauty. May we delight ourselves in Him with increased delight.Ā Lead us to the cross, and show us in His wounds–the hateful character of sin.Ā May we see our sins, as . . .Ā
Ā  theĀ nailsĀ which transfixed Him,
Ā  theĀ cordsĀ which bound Him,
Ā  theĀ swordĀ which pierced Him,
Ā  theĀ thornsĀ which tore Him,
Ā  theĀ tauntsĀ which stung Him.Ā

Help us to read in His cruel death, the reality and immensity of His love.Ā

Open to us the wondrous volumes of glorious truth in the cry,Ā “It is finished!”Ā
Our atonement is forever achieved,Ā
our debt is fully paid,Ā
all our guilt is washed away,
all our sins most righteously forgiven,
our souls saved,
Hell vanquished,
the devil crushed,
Heaven won, andĀ
eternity of glory our rightful home!

Holy Spirit, deepen in us these saving lessons.Ā
Write them with Your finger on the tablets of our hearts.Ā

May our walk be . . .
Ā  sin-loathing,
Ā  sin-fleeing,
Ā  Christ-loving,
Ā  God-fearing!

Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil

Grace logo

Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil

(Charles Spurgeon)

“We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose!” Romans 8:28Ā

The Christian does not merely hold this truth as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact. Everything has worked for good as yet.Ā

TheĀ poisonous drugsĀ mixed in fit proportions, have worked the cure.Ā

TheĀ sharp cutsĀ of the lancet, have cleansed out the infected flesh and facilitated the healing.Ā

In every event of your life, God has always worked out the most divinely blessed results.

Believing that God rules all, that He governs wisely, that He brings good out of evil–the believer’s heart is comforted, and he is enabled calmly to meet each trial as it comes. The believer can in the spirit of true resignation pray, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not mine! Send me what You will, my Father, so long as it comes from You!”

As foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!

Grace logo

As foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!Ā

(Charles Spurgeon)

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes!” Romans 1:16Ā

To try to win a soul to Christ by keeping that soul in ignorance of any truth, is contrary to the mind of the Spirit. To endeavor to save men by mere claptrap, or entertainments, or excitements, or oratorical displays–isĀ as foolish as to hope to bind an angel with a string, or to lure a star with music!Ā

The best attraction is the gospel in its purity. The weapon with which the Lord conquers men, is the truth as it is in Jesus. The gospel will be found equal to every emergency. The gospel is anĀ arrowĀ which can pierce the hardest heart–aĀ balmĀ which will heal the deadliest wound. Preach it, and preach nothing else. Rely implicitly upon the old, old gospel.Ā

You need no otherĀ netsĀ when you fish for men; those your Master has given you are strong enough for the large fish, and have meshes fine enough to hold the little ones.Ā

Spread those nets and no others, and you need not fear the fulfillment of His Word, “I will make you fishers of men.”

The diamonds of Heaven!

Grace logo

The diamonds of Heaven!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“You keep track of all myĀ sorrows.
Ā You have collected all myĀ tearsĀ in Your bottle.
Ā You have recorded each one in Your book.”Ā Psalm 56:8

“Behold, he is praying!” Acts 9:11Ā

Prayers are instantly noticed in heaven. The moment Saul began to pray, the Lord heard him. Here is comfort for the distressed but praying soul. Oftentimes a poor broken-hearted one bends his knee, but can only utter his wailing in the language of sighs and tears; yet that groan has made all the harps of heaven thrill with music; that tear has been caught by God and treasured in theĀ lachrymatory of Heaven.Ā You have collected all my tears in Your bottle.”Ā ThisĀ implies that they are caught as they flow!Ā

The suppliant, who groans out his words, will be well understood by the Most High God. He may only look up with misty eye; butĀ prayer is the falling of a tear!Ā Tears areĀ the diamonds of Heaven!Ā SighsĀ are a part of the music of Jehovah’s court, and are numbered with the most sublime strains which reach the majesty on high!

Do not think that your prayers, however weak or trembling, will be unregarded. Our God not onlyĀ hearsĀ prayers, but alsoĀ lovesĀ to hear them. “He does not forget the cry of the humble.”Ā

True, He does not regard proud looks and lofty words.Ā
He no concern for the pomp and pageantry of kings.Ā
He does not listen not to the swell of martial music.Ā
He does not regard the triumph and pride of man.Ā

But wherever there is a contrite heart full with sorrow, or a lip quivering with agony, or a deep groan, or a penitential sigh葉he heart of Jehovah is open! He marks that prayer down inĀ the registry of His memory!Ā He puts our prayers, like rose leaves傭etween the pages of His book of remembrance, and when the volume is opened at last there shall be a precious fragrance springing up therefrom!

There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!

Grace logo

There is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life!

(Charles Spurgeon)Ā

“Be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age!” Matthew 28:20Ā

It is well that there is One who is ever the same, and who is ever with us. It is well thatĀ there is one stable rock amidst the billows of the sea of life. O my soul, do not set your affections upon rusting, moth-eaten, decaying treasures–but set your heart upon Him who abides forever faithful to you. Do not build your house upon the moving quicksands of a deceitful world–but found your hopes upon this rock, which, amid descending rain and roaring floods, shall stand immovably secure!

My soul, I charge you–lay up yourĀ treasureĀ in the only secure cabinet; store yourĀ jewelsĀ where you can never lose them. Put yourĀ allĀ in Christ; set . . .
Ā  all yourĀ affectionsĀ on His person,
Ā  all yourĀ hopeĀ in His merit,
Ā  all yourĀ trustĀ in His efficacious blood,
Ā  all yourĀ joyĀ in His presence,
and so you may laugh at loss and defy difficulties.Ā

Remember thatĀ all the flowers in the world’s garden wither and die–and the day is coming when nothing will be left but the black, cold earth.Ā Death’s black extinguisherĀ must soon put out your candle. Oh! how sweet to haveĀ sunlight–when theĀ candleĀ is gone! TheĀ dark floodĀ must soon roll between you and all you have!Ā

So wed your heart to Him who will never leave you. Trust yourself with Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death’s stream, and who will land you safely on the celestial shore, and make you sit with Him in heavenly places forever!Ā

Go, sorrowing son of affliction–tell your secret troubles to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Trust all your concerns with Him . . .
Ā  who never can be taken from you,
Ā  who will never leave you, and
Ā  who will never let you leave Him, even “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”Ā

“I am with you always,”Ā is enough for my soul to live upon–though all others forsake me!

Self-sins!

Grace logo

Self-sins!

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will beĀ lovers of themselves” 2 Timothy 3:1-2Ā

(A.W. Tozer)

We all have a number ofĀ self-sins:
Ā  self-righteousness,
Ā  self-pity,
Ā  self-confidence,
Ā  self-sufficiency,
Ā  self-admiration,
Ā  self-worth,
Ā  self-love andĀ
Ā  a host of others like them!
These self-sins are not something weĀ do, they are something weĀ are–and therein lies both their subtlety and their power. They dwell too deep within us and are too much a part of our natures, to come to our attention–until the light of God is focused upon them.Ā

The grosser manifestations of these sins–egotism, pride, arrogance, self-elevation, self-promotion–are strangely tolerated inĀ Christian leaders, even in circles of impeccable orthodoxy! They are so much in evidence as actually, for many people, to become identified with the gospel. I trust that it is not a cynical observation to say that they appear these days to be aĀ requisite for popularityĀ in some sections of theĀ  visible Church.Ā

PromotingĀ selfĀ under the guise of promotingĀ Christ–is currently so common as to excite little notice!Ā

“They do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely” Philippians 1:17Ā

The greatest sinner that you know!

Grace logo

The greatest sinner that you know!

(William Law, “A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life“)

“This is a true saying, and worthy of all acceptance:Ā ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’–andĀ I am the worst of them all.” 1 Timothy 1:15Ā

You may truly look uponĀ yourselfĀ to beĀ the greatest sinner that you knowĀ in the world. For though you may know many people to be guilty of some gross sins with which you cannot charge yourself–yet you may justly condemn yourself as the greatest sinner that you know, because you know more of the folly of your own heart, than you do of other people’s hearts. You can charge yourself with various sins, that only you know of yourself, and cannot be sure that others are guilty of them.Ā

So that as you know more of the folly, the degradation, the pride, the deceitfulness and vileness of your own heart, than you do of any one’s else–so you have just reason to consider yourself asĀ the greatest sinner that you know; because you know more of the greatness of your own sins, than you do of other people’s sins.Ā

God Almighty knows greater sinners than you are; because He sees and knows the circumstances of all men’s sins.Ā But your own heart, if it is faithful to you, can discover no guilt so great as your own.

Perhaps that person who appears so odious in your eyes, would have been much better than you are–had he been altogether in your circumstances, and received all the same favors and graces from God that you have. And thereforeĀ the greatest sinner that you know, must be yourself.

This is a very humbling thought.Ā

A serious and frequent reflection upon this will mightily tend to . . .
Ā  humble us in our own eyes,Ā
Ā  make us very sensible of the greatness of our own guilt,Ā
Ā  and very tender in censuring and condemning other people.

This alone is the vexed soul’s refuge!

(Horatius Bonar, 1808-1889)

“In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge!” Colossians 2:3

The one trueĀ resting-place where doubt and weariness, the stings of a pricking conscience, and the longings of an unsatisfied soul would all be quieted–is Christ Himself!
Ā
Not the church, but Christ.Ā

Not doctrine, but Christ.Ā

Not religious forms and ceremonies, but Christ.Ā

Christ the God-man . . .
Ā  giving His life for ours,
Ā  sealing the everlasting covenant, and
Ā  making peace for us through the blood of His cross!

Christ the divine storehouse of all light and truth, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge!Ā

Christ the infinite vessel–the enlightener, the teacher, the quickener, the comforter–so that out of His fullness we may receive grace upon grace.

This,Ā this alone is the vexed soul’s refuge, itsĀ rockĀ to build on, itsĀ homeĀ to abide in–until the great tempter is bound and every conflict ended in victory.

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”Ā Matthew 27:46

Would I know how exceedingly sinful and abominable sin is in the sight of God? Where shall I see sin most fully brought out?Ā

Shall I turn to the history of theĀ flood, and read how sin drowned the world?Ā

Shall I go to the shore of the Dead Sea, and mark what sin brought onĀ SodomĀ andĀ Gomorrah?Ā

No! I can find a clearer proof still! I look at theĀ cross of Christ!

There I see that sin is so filthy and damnable, that nothing but the blood of God’s own Son can wash it away!Ā

There I see that sin has so separated me from my holy Maker, that all the angels in Heaven could never have made peace between us. Nothing could reconcile us, short of the death of Christ.Ā

If I listened to the wretched talk of proud people, I might sometimes imagine that sin was not so very sinful! ButĀ I cannot think little of sin, whenĀ I look at the cross of Christ!Ā

Gather your manna fresh every morning!

Gather your manna fresh every morning!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“Oh, how I love Your law! I meditate on it all day long!”Ā Psalm 119:97

The Bible in the pulpit, must never supersede the Bible at home. Let us read our Bibles in private more, and with more pains and diligence.Ā

There is less private Bible reading than there was fifty years ago. I never would have believed that so many men and women would have been tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine, some falling into skepticism, some rushing into the wildest and narrowest fanaticism, and some going over to the Roman church. With many, there was a habit developed of lazy, superficial and careless reading of God’s Word.Ā Ā Ā

Read the Bible daily. Make it part of your everyday business to read and meditate on some portion of God’s Word.Ā Gather your manna fresh every morning!Ā Choose your own seasons and hours. Do not scramble over and hurry your reading. Give your Bible the best, and not the worst, part of your time. But whatever plan you pursue, let it be a rule of your life to visit the throne of grace and the Bible every day.

Next to praying there is nothing so important in practical religion as Bible reading. By reading that Book we may learn . . .
Ā  what to believe,
Ā  what to be,Ā
Ā  what to do,
Ā  how to live with comfort,
Ā  and how to die in peace.

Happy is that man who possesses a Bible!

Happier still is he who reads it!

Happiest of all is he who not only reads it, but obeys it, and makes it the rule of his faith and practice!

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness–that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Let us abhor the very idea of play-acting and mask-wearing in our Christianity!

Grace logo

Let us abhor the very idea of play-acting and mask-wearing in our Christianity!

(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)

Let us observe how abominableĀ hypocrisyĀ is in the eyes of Christ. We are told that in the presence of all the people, Jesus said unto His disciples, “Beware of the teachers of the law! They like to walk around in flowing robes–and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses–andĀ pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public.” Luke 20:46-47

This was a bold and remarkable warning. It was a public denunciation, we must remember, of men who were the recognized teachers of the Jewish people.Ā

No sin seems to be regarded by Christ as more wicked, thanĀ hypocrisy. None certainly drew forth from His lips such frequent, strong and withering condemnation, during the whole course of His ministry.Ā

He was ever full of mercy and compassion for the chief of sinners. “Fury was not in Him” when He saw Zacchaeus; the penitent thief; Matthew the tax-collector; Saul the persecutor; and the sinful woman in Simon’s house.Ā

But when He saw Scribes and Pharisees wearing aĀ mere cloak of religion, and pretending to great outward sanctity, while their hearts were full of wickedness–His righteous soul seems to have been full of indignation. Eight times in one chapter (Matthew 23) we find Him saying,Ā “Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees! You hypocrites!”

Whatever else we are in religion–let us be true. However feeble our faith, and hope, and love, and obedience may be–let us see to it that they are real, genuine, and sincere.Ā Let us abhor the very idea of play-acting and mask-wearing in our Christianity. At any rate, let us be genuine.Ā

TheĀ hypocriteĀ will have the lowest place in Hell! “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the damnation of Hell?” Matthew 23:33

In that hand which was once nailed to the cross for your redemption!

In that hand which was once nailed to the cross for your redemption!

(James Smith, “The Believer’s Companion in Seasons of Affliction and Trouble” 1842)

“The LordĀ disciplinesĀ those HeĀ loves, and HeĀ punishesĀ every one He accepts as a son.” Hebrews 12:6Ā

Afflicted Christian, you are perhaps tempted to think that God cannot love you — or He would not so deeply try you. But the reverse is the case — if He didĀ notĀ love you, He might perhaps refuse to try you. But because He loves you, and is a Father to you — therefore He corrects you.Ā

All of the Lord’s children need correction!Ā Many of them will not grow without very severe discipline — consequently your heavenly Father says, “I willĀ meltĀ them, andĀ tryĀ them.” “I will turn My hand upon you — and will purge away your dross.”

Look to the generations of old, and see if the Lord’s people in every age have not beenĀ an afflicted people.Ā Look at Job, at the prophets, at Lazarus; God tenderly loved them — and yet howĀ severelyĀ He tried them. He has commanded an earthly parent to chasten his son, and not to let his soul spare for his crying — and by this rule He also proceeds. HeĀ chastensĀ us — that He may notĀ destroyĀ us. There isĀ infinite mercyĀ in your present trial — as dreadful as it may appear to you. There was anĀ absolute necessityĀ for it — for He does not afflict willingly, nor grieve His redeemed children.

He takes pleasure in the spiritual prosperity of His people — and therefore He usesĀ meansĀ to promote it. He has received you as a son, and He is now . . .
Ā  using His paternal authority;Ā
Ā  manifesting His infinite wisdom;Ā
Ā  fulfilling His gracious covenant;Ā
Ā  making good His precious promises;Ā
Ā  and displaying His unutterable love!

Every one who is . . .
Ā  adopted into His family;Ā
Ā  quickened by His grace;Ā
Ā  and united to Jesus —
is made to pass underĀ the rod,Ā and prove the truth of the Scripture which says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous — but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”Ā

He chastens you, not for His own pleasure or gratification, but for your profit — that you might be a partaker of His holiness. What aĀ gracious designĀ is this — every way worthy of God. It affords full proof of His infinite wisdom, care, and love!

Think within yourself:
I could not do without this affliction;
it is sent in love;Ā
it is intended to do me good;Ā
it is a proof that I am a child of God
 — and you will then think rightly.Ā

Do notĀ despiseĀ the chastening of the Lord, by thinking that you could have done as well without it; or that there wasĀ no necessityĀ for it. Depend upon it, you must either be . . .
Ā  pained — or ruined;Ā
Ā  tried — or injured;Ā
Ā  corrected — or lost.Ā

Do notĀ faintĀ when the Lord rebukes you. He has promised you, that as yourĀ dayĀ is — so shall yourĀ strengthĀ be. He says to you, “Do not fear — for I am with you; do not be afraid — for I am your God. I willĀ strengthenĀ you; I willĀ helpĀ you; I willĀ upholdĀ you with My righteous right hand!” Isaiah 41:10. Precious promise of a faithful God! He made it in love. He has not forgotten it — no, He intends to make it good. Yes, He is now making it good to you — as tried and afflicted as you are.Ā

The rod which afflicts you, is in the hand of Jesus!Ā In that hand which was once nailed to the cross for your redemption!Ā In the hand of thatĀ FriendĀ whoĀ lovesĀ at all times; and who is aĀ BrotherĀ born for adversity. Will Jesus who suffered, bled, and died to redeem you — everĀ hurtĀ you? Surely not! His heart is too tender! His love is too great! “He will not break the bruised reed — and He will not quench the smoking flax!” He will bind up the broken heart, and comfort the sorrowful spirit.Ā

You say, “He is sorely trying me!” True — but He is only making you fit to partake of the inheritance of the saints in light. They are . . .
Ā  loving strokes,Ā
Ā  valuable trials,Ā
Ā  blessed afflictions!
AsĀ sharpĀ they may be — shortĀ they must be.Ā

Humble yourself then under the mighty hand of God;Ā
mourn before Him;Ā
surrender all to Him;
plead with Him;Ā
justify Him — and . . .
Ā Ā  theĀ rodĀ will soon fall from His hand,Ā
Ā Ā  theĀ scourgingĀ will soon be over, andĀ
Ā Ā  peaceable fruits of righteousness will make their appearance.Ā

Look up to your God, and say:

Submissive to Your will, my God,Ā
I all to you resign;
I bow before Your chastening rod,Ā
And mourn, but not repine!

Why should my foolish heart complain,
When wisdom, truth, and love,
Direct the stroke, inflict the pain,
And point to joys above?

How short are all my sufferings here!
How needful every cross!Ā
Away then, myĀ unbelieving fear,
Nor call myĀ gain, my loss.

“Then I sawĀ a great white throne—and HIM who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from His presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were openedĀ  . . . If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life—he was thrown into the lake of fire!” Revelation 20:11, 12, 15

What an astonishing scene is this!Ā The stable earth and sky cannot bear the majesty and terror of His look; they fly away affrighted! This is the Judge before whom we must stand; and this is the manner of His appearance!

But is this theĀ babe of Bethlehem—who lay and wept in the manger?Ā

Is this theĀ supposed son of the carpenter, the despised Galilean?Ā

Is this theĀ man of sorrows?Ā

Is this He who was . . .
Ā  arrested,Ā
Ā  condemned,Ā
Ā  buffeted,Ā
Ā  spit upon,Ā Ā
Ā  crowned with thorns,Ā
Ā  executed as a slave and a criminal, upon the cross?Ā

Yes, it is Him!Ā The very same Jesus of Nazareth!Ā

But oh how changed! How deservedly exalted! Heaven and earth flee before Him!Ā

Now let hisĀ enemiesĀ appear and show their contempt and malignity!

Now,Ā Pilate—condemn the King of the Jews as a usurper!

Now, youĀ Jews, raise the clamor,Ā “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”Ā Now bow the knee in scorn, spit in His face, and buffet Him! Now tell theĀ scourged impostorĀ that He must die!

Now despise His grace,Ā
now laugh at His threatenings, andĀ
now make light of His displeasure—if you dare!

Ah! now their courage fails, and terror surrounds them! Now they try to hide in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. Now they call to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and fromĀ the wrath of the Lamb!Ā For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

But, alas! That LAMB who once bled as a sacrifice for sin—now appears in all the terrors of a LION! Oh! could they hide themselves in the bottom of the ocean, or in some rock that bears the weight of the mountains—how happy would they think themselves!

Should it be according to your mind?

Grace logo

Should it be according toĀ yourĀ mind?

(James Smith, “Important Questions!” 1858)

Should it be according toĀ yourĀ mind?” Job 34:33

We are prone to be fretful, to complain of the dispensations of Divine Providence, and to reflect harshly upon the Lord’s dealings with us.

We want our own way.

We wish to carve for ourselves.

We would be treated as God’s favorites.

We want our ease, and prosperity, and pleasure, consulted in all things. And if this does not appear to be done — if ourĀ willsĀ are crossed, if ourĀ schemesĀ are frustrated, if ourĀ purposesĀ are broken off — then we stumble, think ourselves badly treated, and look for everybody to sympathize with us.

Under these circumstances, God comes to us — as we sit among our broken cisterns, surrounded by our dethroned idols — and puts this question to us: “Should it be according toĀ yourĀ mind?”

Are youĀ wiserĀ than God?

Are youĀ kinderĀ than God?

Are youĀ holierĀ than God?

Are you moreĀ justĀ than God?

Are you betterĀ informedĀ than God?

May not your mind be dark, or selfish, or foolish?

Should it then be according toĀ yourĀ mind?

Should youĀ reign — or God?

Remember that God acts in the highest wisdom; His motives are grace and justice; and all His purposes are worthy of Himself.

The least the Christian can do is to submit — and to prefer God’s wisdom, way, and work — to his own. Seeing God has so arranged all events, that all things must work together for the good of His people — they, at least, should daily say, “Father, mayĀ YourĀ will be done!”

O my soul, seek grace from God, not only to submit and be resigned to the dispensations of Divine Providence — but toĀ acquiesceĀ in them, and beĀ pleasedĀ with the whole of them! Your good is consulted — your best interests are secured; and soon, very soon, it will be seen that infinite wisdom and mercy, grace and goodness, have marked outĀ every stepĀ of your road!

“Jesus replied: You do not understand what I amĀ nowĀ doing — but someday you will.” John 13:7

Your conscience will not always sleep!

Grace logo

Your conscience will not always sleep!Ā

(Samuel Davies, “Divine Mercy to Mourning Penitents“)

“They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, theirĀ consciencesĀ also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.” Romans 2:15

The principal means which God uses in conversion, is that of conscience; and indeed without this, all the rest are in vain. Outward afflictions are of service—only as they tend to awaken the conscience from its lethargy to a faithful discharge of its duty. It is conscience which makes the sinner sensible of his misery and scourges him. TheĀ lashes of a guilty conscienceĀ are intolerable; and some under them have chosen strangling and suicide, rather than life.

Conscience is a serpent in his breast, which bites and gnaws his heart; and he can no more avoid it, than he can fly from himself!Ā

Let not such of you as have never been tortured with its remorse, congratulate yourselves upon your happiness, for you are not innocents!Ā Your conscience will not always sleep!Ā It will not always lie torpid and inactive, like a snake benumbed with cold, in your breast!Ā

It willĀ awakenĀ you either to your conversion—or condemnation!

Either the fire of God’s wrath flaming from His law will enliven it in this world—to sting you withĀ medicinalĀ anguish; or the unquenchable fire of His vengeance in the lake of fire and brimstone will thaw it into life—and then it will horribly rage in your breast, and diffuse its tormenting poison through your whole frame! And then it will become aĀ never-dying worm, and prey upon your hearts forever!

As long as preachers allow their sermons to be dictated by public sentiment or the worldly desires of their hearers!

As long as preachers allow their sermons to be dictated by public sentiment or the worldly desires of their hearers!

(Charles Naylor)

“They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” John 17:16Ā

“As Christ is, so are we in this world” 1 John 4:17

A Christian is one who is Christlike in character, in desire, and in deportment. No other has any right to bear Christ’s name. Yet there are a multitude of people who call themselves Christians, who bear no resemblance to Christ in their lives.Ā

One of the most pitiable things that we can behold, is one who professes to be a citizen of the kingdom of God–and yet lives like a citizen of the kingdom of Satan. TheĀ worldly professorĀ fills his days with folly–but his cup of joy is always bitter at the last. He gathers up the “fool’s gold” that glitters in earthly things. He lives after the flesh and after the world. He goes with the crowd. He misses all the blessedness of righteousness, and, worst of all, he misses Heaven at the last. “You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” James 4:4

Those who still love the pride and vanity of the world, those who are absorbed in its frivolities, those who covet its gold and its honors, those who love its applause–these are those who are of the world.Ā

Those hypocritical professors who bear Christ’s name, but will not obey Him–dishonor Him, and by their example influence others to do the same, how shall they escape the damnation of Hell? If there is one thing that God hates above all else, it is a proud and worldly heart! Such a heart can never be a reverential heart. Its religion is but hypocrisy. It is only a sham. It has no reality. It is only a cloak of respectability, while the heart is full of corruption.

The Christian life is, and ever will be, a life of separation fromĀ sinĀ andĀ prideĀ andĀ worldliness. If you are not willing to be thus separated, then you should have common honesty enough not to profess to be what you very well know that you are not. If you are going to be a Christian in name, then be one in reality.

YourĀ character, not yourĀ profession, will be what will matter in the final judgment. “God will give to each person according to what he has done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality–He will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil–there will be wrath and anger.” Romans 2:6-8

If all preachers had honesty enough and courage enough to preach the truth–then the tide of worldliness that is overwhelming such a multitude of souls and sweeping them into perdition, would be somewhat stayed.Ā As long as preachers allow their sermons to be dictated by public sentiment or the worldly desires of their hearers–they will cater to fashions, and souls by the million will drift on into Hell. Oh, what a reaping such preachers will have at the judgment! The full measure of God’s wrath will fall on those preachers who fail to be true to souls and to God, in preaching those truths the Bible clearly teaches against sin and worldliness.Ā

Indelible impressions!

Indelible impressions!

(William Bacon Stevens, “Parental Responsibility“)

We aid and abet the spiritual death of our children, by our irreligious example — both in doing that which is positively wrong, and in neglecting to do what is as positively required. As young as our child is — it has learned to join togetherĀ preceptĀ andĀ practice. And if we are professors of religion, our child has put along side of this profession — our daily walk and conversation, and is perpetually drawing inferences from the one to the other, either for, or against, the truth which we profess.

Uncurbed tempers, ill-governed passions;
unbridled tongues, uncharitable words;
lack of meekness, and gentleness, and truth;Ā
lack of sobriety of mind, and kindliness of heart;Ā
the absence of that strict conscientiousness which should mark all our actions;
neglect of the Bible and of prayer;Ā
disregard of the means of grace;
irrepressible worldliness, in ever dwelling uponĀ “What shall we eat, and what shall we drink, and with what shall we be clothed?”
 — are leavingĀ indelible impressionsĀ upon the minds of our offspring! So that,Ā copying our habits of thought, speech, and action — our child’sĀ characterĀ in its essential characteristics, may be formed for eternity; before its mind is able to receive theĀ preceptsĀ which perhaps we occasionally teach.

Carnal, careless, and covetous

Grace logo

Carnal, careless, and covetous

One must judge of his own state by the fruit he bears.
When our fruit is unto holiness, we know that the end
shall be everlasting life. Everyone who hopes that he is
converted to God, should examine himself and prove his
own fruit. In judging of piety, there is no substitute for
a holy life. We are Christ’s disciples—if we do whatever
He commands us. We are the servants of the wicked
one—if we do the works of the flesh. We may boast of
discoveries, of raptures, and ecstasies—but all is in vain
if a consistent life is not the result.Ā A godly life is the
infallible evidence of conversion.

Many professors of religion areĀ carnal, careless,Ā
and covetous
. In them no change of life appearsĀ
to prove a change of heart. They are much like theirĀ
worldly neighbors, except that they attend church.Ā
They are spots and blemishes in Christian feasts.Ā
They are a grief and a shame to godly people. TheĀ
church has their names, but the world has theirĀ
hearts. The number of such is painfully large.

“When He comes, He will convict the world aboutĀ sin, righteousness, and judgment.” (John 16:8)

Where the Holy Spirit is, there will always be deep conviction of sin — and true repentance for it. It is His special office to convict of sin.Ā

He shows the exceeding holiness of God.Ā

He teaches the exceeding corruption and infirmity of our nature.Ā

He strips us of our blind self-righteousness.Ā

He opens our eyes to our awful guilt, folly and danger.Ā

He fills the heart with sorrow, contrition, and abhorrence for sin — as the abominable thing which God hates.Ā

He who knows nothing of all this, and saunters carelessly through life, thoughtless about sin, and indifferent and unconcerned about his soul — is a dead man before God! He has not the Holy Spirit.Ā

The presence of the Holy Spirit in a man’s heart can only be known byĀ the fruits and effects He produces. Mysterious and invisible to mortal eye as His operations are — they always lead to certain visible and tangible results.

Just as you know there is life in a tree by its sap, buds, leaves and fruits — just so you may know the Spirit to be in a man’s heart by the influence He exercises over his thoughts, affections, opinions, habits, and life. I lay this down broadly and unhesitatingly. I see it clearly marked out in our Lord Jesus Christ’s words, “Every tree is known by his own fruit.” Luke 6:44

Just as little children are in daily dependenceĀ
on their parents, Christians depend upon theĀ
Lord’s care.Ā

Why, beloved, the Lord has to nurse you! HeĀ
feeds you with the unadulterated milk of theĀ
Word; he comforts you as a mother does herĀ
child; he carries you in his bosom, he bearsĀ
you all your days.Ā

Your new life is as yet weak and struggling;Ā
do not carry it into the cold atmosphere ofĀ
distance from Jesus.Ā

Little children, since you derive all from Jesus,Ā
abide in him. To go elsewhere will be to wanderĀ
into a howling wilderness. The world is empty;Ā
only Christ has fullness. Away from Jesus youĀ
will be as a child deserted by its mother, leftĀ
to pine, and starve, and die; or as a little lambĀ
on the hillside without a shepherd, tracked byĀ
the wolf, whose teeth will soon extract itsĀ
heart’s blood.Ā

Abide, O child, with your mother!Ā

Abide, O lamb, with your shepherd!Ā

in your fickleness, in your nothingness; andĀ
abidingly take him to be everything to you.Ā

Losses, adversities, afflictions, griefs!
The following is from Spurgeon’s sermon, ā€œThe Superlative
Excellence of the Holy Spiritā€Ā  No. 574.Ā  John 16:7.

The saints of God may very justly reckon
Ā  their losses among their greatest gains.

The adversities of believers minister much to their prosperity.

Although we know this, yet through the infirmity of the flesh
we tremble at soul-enriching afflictions, and dread to see those
black ships which bring us such freights of golden treasure.

When the Holy Spirit sanctifies the furnace, the flame refines
our gold and consumes our dross, yet the dull ore of our nature
likes not the glowing coals, and had rather lie quiet in the dark
mines of earth.

As silly children cry because they are called to drink the
medicine which will heal their sicknesses, even so do we.

Our gracious Savior, however, loves us too wisely to spare
us the trouble because of our childish fears; he foresees the
advantage which will spring from our griefs, and therefore
thrusts us into them out of wisdom and true affection.

The back door to the pit!

The back door to the pit!
The following is from Spurgeon’s sermon,
ā€œA Hearer in Disguiseā€ No. 584. 1 Kings 14:6.

Many come to God’s house disguised in manner
Ā  and appearance. How good you all look!

When we sing and you take your books, how
heavenly-minded!Ā  And when we pray, how
reverent you are! How your heads are all bowed-
your eyes covered with your hands!Ā  I do not know
how much praying there is when you sit in a devout
posture, though you assume the attitude and compose
your countenance as those who draw near to supplicate
the Lord. I am afraid there are many of you who do not
pray a word or present a petition, though you assume
the posture of suppliants.

When the singing is going on there are many who never
sing a word with the spirit and the understanding.

In the house of God I am afraid there are many who wear
a mask, stand as God’s people stand, sit as they sit, pray
as they pray, and sing as they sing-Ā  and all the while what
are you doing?
Some of you have been attending to your children while
we have been singing tonight. Some of you have been casting
up your ledger, attending to your farms, scheming about your
carpentering and bricklaying; yet all the while if we had looked
into your faces we might have thought you were reverently
worshiping God.

Oh! those solemn faces, and those reverent looks,
Ā  they do not deceive the Most High God!

He knows who and what you are!

He sees you as clearly as men seeĀ  through glass.
As for hiding from the Almighty, how can you hide
yourself from him? As well attempt to hide in a glass
case, for all the world is a glass case before God!

When you look into a glass beehive, you can see the bees and
everything they do- such is this world, a sort of glass beehive
in which God can see everything. The eyes of God are on you
continually; no veil of hypocrisy can screen you from him.

It is a melancholy and a most solemn reflection that there are
many who profess to be Christians who are not Christians.

There was a Judas among the twelve; there was a Demas among
the early disciples; and we must always expect to find chaff on
God’s floor mingled with the wheat.

I have tried, the Lord knows, to preach as plainly and as
much home to the mark as I could, to sift and try you; but
for all that the hypocrite will come in. After the most searching
ministry, there are still some who will wrap themselves about
with a ‘mantle of deception’. Though we cry aloud and spare
not, and bid you lay hold on eternal life, yet, alas! how many
are content with a mere name to live and are dead.

Many come here and even hold office in the Church, yes,
the minister himself may even preach the Word, and after
all be hollow and empty. How many who dress and look
fair outside, are only fit to be tinder for the devil’s tinder
box, for they are all dry and empty within!

God save as from a profession if it is not real!

I pray that we may know the worst of our case.
If I must be damned, I would sooner go to hell unholy,
than as a hypocrite- that back-door to the pit is the
thing I dread most of all.

Oh! to sit at the Lord’s table, and to drink of the cup of devils!
To be recognized among God’s own here, and then to find one’s
own name left out when God reads the muster-roll of his servants!

Oh! what a portion for eternity!

I bid you tear off this mask, and if the grace of God is not
in you, I beg you to go into the world which is your fit place,
and abstain from joining the Church, if you are not really a
member of the body of Christ.

ā€œYou, God, see me!ā€
Write that on the palm of your hand, and look
at it; wake up in the morning with it; sleep with it
before you on your curtains.

ā€œYou, God, see me!ā€

Believers err in many things, fall

Believers err in many things, fall
in many ways, and sin is mixed with
all they do; but in the tenor of their
lives all believers are faithful, seeking
the will and glory of God in all things
and above all things.
As we become increasingly aware of our
personal sinfulness and corruption, as
we are humbled by the depravity of our
hearts,Ā  nothing is more comforting,
cheerful, and reassuring to God’sĀ  saints,
than the knowledge of the fact that in
the eyes of ChristĀ  we stand perfect in the
beauty of his righteousness, the beauty
Ā which he has put upon us.

Adultery Pollutes

Grace logo

She is a common sewer!

(Thomas Watson, “The Ten Commandments.Ā

This selection is longer, but it is needful inĀ our immoral society. Though it particularly addressesĀ adultery, it easily applies to any kind ofĀ immorality. This is the best article I have ever read, on how to deal withĀ lust. Every man struggles with lust—so please forward this on.)

“You shall not commit adultery.”Ā
Exodus 20:14

This commandment is set up as a hedge to keep out impurity; and those who break this hedge—a serpent shall bite them! TheĀ fountainĀ of this sin is lust. God is a pure, holy being, and has an infinite antipathy against all impurity. We must take heed of running on theĀ rock of impurity, and soĀ making shipwreck of our chastity. The meaning of the commandment is not only that we should not stain ourĀ bodiesĀ with immorality—but that we should keep ourĀ soulsĀ pure. To have a chaste body—but an unclean soul, is like a beautiful face with a cancerous heart. “Be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16.

There is aĀ mentalĀ adultery. “WhoeverĀ looksĀ on a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery with her already in hisĀ heart.” Matthew 5:28. As a man may die of an inward bleeding—so he may be damned for the inward boilings of lust, if it is not mortified. That I may deter you from the sin of adultery, let me show youĀ the great evilĀ of it.

(1) Adultery is a thievish sin.Ā It is the highest sort of theft. The adulterer steals from his neighbor, that which is more than his goods and estate; he steals away his wife from him!

(2) Adultery debases a person.Ā It makes him resemble the beasts; therefore the adulterer is described like a horseĀ neighing. “EveryoneĀ neighedĀ after his neighbor’s wife.” Jeremiah 5:8. It is worse than brutish; for some creatures which are void of reason—yet by the instinct of nature, observe some decorum and chastity. TheĀ turtle-doveĀ is a chaste creature, and keeps to its mate. And theĀ stork, wherever he flies, comes into no nest but his own. Naturalists write that if a stork, leaving his own mate, joins with any other, all the rest of the storks fall upon it, and pull its feathers from it. Adultery isĀ worse than brutish, it degrades a person of his honor.

(3) Adultery pollutes.Ā The devil is called anĀ uncleanĀ spirit. Luke 11:24. TheĀ adultererĀ is the devil’s first-born; he is unclean; he is a moving quagmire. He is all over ulcerated with sin; hisĀ eyesĀ sparkle with lust; hisĀ mouthĀ foams out filth; hisĀ heartĀ burns like mount Etna, in unclean desires.Ā He is so filthy,Ā that if he dies in this sin, all the flames of hell will never purge away his immorality! And, as for theĀ adulteress,Ā who can paint her black enough? The Scripture calls her aĀ deep ditch.Ā Proverbs 23:27.Ā She is a common sewer!Ā TheĀ bodyĀ of a harlot is a walking dung-hill, and herĀ soulĀ a lesser hell!

(4) Adultery is destructive to the body.
Ā “Afterward you will groan in anguish when disease consumes your body.” Proverbs 5:11. Immorality turns the body into a hospital, it brings foul diseases, and eats the beauty of the face. As the flame wastes the candle, so theĀ fire of lustĀ consumes the body. The adulterer hastens his own death. “So she seduced him with her pretty speech. With her flattery she enticed him. He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter or like a trapped stag, awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart. He was like a bird flying into a snare, little knowing it would cost him his life!” Proverbs 7:21-23.Ā

(5.) Adultery is a drain upon the purse; it wastes not the body only—but the estate.
Ā “Keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, for the prostituteĀ reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life!” Proverbs 6:24-26. Whores are the devil’s horse-leeches, sponges that suck in money. The prodigal son spent his inheritance, when he fell among harlots. Luke 15:30. The concubine of King Edward III, when he was dying, got all she could from him, and even plucked the rings off his fingers.

(6) Adultery destroys reputation.
Ā “But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys his own soul. Wounds and constantĀ disgraceĀ are his lot. HisĀ shameĀ will never be erased!” Proverbs 6:32, 33.Ā Wounds of reputation—no physician can heal. When the adulterer dies, his shame lives. When his body rots underground, his name rots above ground. HisĀ bastard childrenĀ are living monuments of his shame.

(7) Adultery impairs the mind.Ā
It steals away the understanding; it stupefies the heart. “Whoredom and wine take away the heart.” Hosea 4:11. It eats all purity out of the heart. Solomon besotted himself with women, and they enticed him to idolatry.

(8) Adultery incurs temporal judgments.
Ā The Mosaic law made the penalty for adultery, to beĀ death. “The adulterer and adulteress shall surely be put to death;” and the usual death wasĀ stoning. Lev 20:10; Deut. 22:24. TheĀ SalonsĀ commanded people guilty of this sin, to be burnt. TheĀ RomansĀ caused their heads to be stricken off. Like a scorpion—this sin carries a sting in its tail. “For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge!” Proverbs 6:34. The adulterer is often killed in the act of his sin. “Lust’s practice is to make a joyfulĀ entrance—but sheĀ leavesĀ in misery.” I have read of two in London, who, having defiled themselves with adultery, were immediately struck dead with lightening from heaven. If all who are now guilty of this sin were to be punished in this manner, it wouldĀ rain fireĀ again, as on Sodom.

(9) Adultery, without repentance, damns the soul.Ā
“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor homosexual offenders . . . will inherit the kingdom of God!” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.Ā The fire of lust, brings to the fire of hell.Ā “God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral!” Hebrews 13:4. ThoughĀ menĀ may neglect to judge them—yetĀ GodĀ will judge them! He will judge them assuredly; they shall not escape the hand of justice; and He will punish them severely. TheĀ harlot’s breastsĀ keeps fromĀ Abraham’s bosom!Ā “TheĀ delightĀ lasts a moment—theĀ tormentĀ an eternity!” Who for a cup of pleasure—would drink a sea of wrath! “Her guests are in the depths of hell.” Proverbs 9:18. The harlot is perfumed with powders, and lovely to look on—but poisonous and damnable to the soul! “She has cast down many wounded, yes, many strong men have been slain by her.” Proverbs 7:26.

(10) The adulterer does all he can, to destroy the soul of another—and so kills two at once!
Ā He is worse than the thief; for, suppose a thief robs a man, yes, and also takes away his life— the man’sĀ soulĀ may be happy; he may go to heaven as well as if he had died in his bed. But he who commits adultery, endangers the soul of another, and does all he can, to deprive her of salvation. What a fearful thing it is—to be an instrument to draw another to hell!

(11) The adulterer is abhorred of God.
Ā “The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; he who isĀ abhorredĀ by the Lord, will fall into it.” Proverbs 22:14. What can be worse than to beĀ abhorredĀ by God? God may beĀ angryĀ with His own children; but for God toĀ abhorĀ a man—is the highest degree of hatred! The immoral person stands upon the threshold of hell; and whenĀ deathĀ gives him a push—he tumbles in!

All this should sound aĀ warningĀ in our ears, and call us off from the pursuit of so damnable a sin as immorality. Hear what the Scriptures say: “Her house is the way to hell.” Proverbs 7:27.

I shall give some directions, by way ofĀ antidote, to keep from the infection of this sin.

(1) Do not come into theĀ companyĀ of a whorish woman; avoid her house, as a seaman does a rock. “Run from her! Don’t go near the door of her house!” Proverbs 5:8. He who would not have the plague, must not come near infected houses; every whore-house has the plague in it. Not to avoid theĀ occasionĀ of sin, and yet pray, “Lead us not into temptation,” is, as if one should put his finger into the candle, and yet pray that it may not be burnt!

(2) Look to yourĀ eyes. Much sin comes in by the eye. “Having eyes full of adultery.” 2 Pet 2:14. TheĀ eyeĀ tempts theĀ imagination, and the imagination works upon theĀ heart. A lustful amorous eye, may usher in sin. Eve firstĀ sawĀ the tree of knowledge—and then sheĀ took. Gen 3:6. First sheĀ looked—and then sheĀ loved. TheĀ eyeĀ often sets theĀ heartĀ on fire; therefore Job laid a law upon his eyes. “I made a covenant with my eyes—not to look with lust upon a young woman.” Job 31:1.

(3) Look to yourĀ lips. Take heed of any unclean word which may enkindle unclean thoughts in yourselves or others. “Evil communications corrupt good manners.” 1 Cor. 15:33. Impure discourse, is the bellows to blow up the fire of lust. Much evil is conveyed to theĀ heartĀ by theĀ tongue. “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth!” Psalm 141:3.

(4) Look in a special manner to yourĀ heart. “Guard yourĀ heartĀ with all diligence.” Proverbs 4:23. Every person has a tempter in his own bosom! “Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, adultery, all other sexual immorality.” Matthew 15:19.Ā ThinkingĀ of sin, makes way for theĀ actĀ of sin. Suppress the first risings of sin in your heart. As the serpent, when danger is near—guards hisĀ head, so keep yourĀ heart, which is the spring from whence all lustful motions proceed.

(5) Look to yourĀ attire. We read of the attire of a harlot. Proverbs 7:10. A wanton dress is a provocation to lust. A painted face, and half-naked breasts, are allurements to immorality. Where theĀ signĀ is hung out—people will go in andĀ tasteĀ the liquor. Jerome says, “those who by their lascivious attire endeavor to draw others to lust, though no evil follows—are tempters—and shall be punished, because they offered theĀ poisonĀ to others, even though they would not drink.”

(6) Take heed of evilĀ company. Sin is a veryĀ contagiousĀ disease; one person tempts another to sin, and hardens him in it. There are three cords which draw men to immorality:Ā
the inclination of the heart,Ā
the persuasion of evil company, andĀ
the embraces of the harlot. ThisĀ threefold cordĀ is not easily broken. “A fire was kindled in their company.” Psalm 106:18. The fire of lust is kindled in bad company.

(7) Beware of going toĀ theatersĀ andĀ plays. A play-house is often a preface to a whorehouse. “Plays furnish the seeds of wickedness.” We are bid to avoid allĀ appearanceĀ of evil; and are not plays the appearance of evil? Such sights are there, which are not fit to be beheld with chaste eyes. A learned divine observes, that many have on their death-beds confessed, with tears, that the pollution of their bodies has been occasioned by going to plays.

(8) Take heed of lasciviousĀ booksĀ andĀ pictures,Ā which provoke to lust. As the reading of the Scripture stirs up love to God, so reading vile books stirs up the mind to wickedness. To lascivious books I may add lascivious pictures, which bewitch the eye, and areĀ incendiaries to lust!Ā They secretly conveyĀ poisonĀ to the heart.Ā

(9) Take heed ofĀ excessĀ in diet. When gluttony and drunkenness lead the van, immorality and wantonness bring up the rear. “Wine inflames lust.” “Sodom’s sins were pride, laziness, andĀ gluttony.” Ezekiel 16:49. TheĀ foulestĀ weeds grow out of theĀ fattestĀ soil. Immorality proceeds from excess. “When I hadĀ fedĀ them to the full, everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife.” Jer. 5:8. Get the “golden bridle of temperance.” God allows theĀ refreshment of nature, and what may fit us the better for his service; but beware of surfeit. Excess in temporal things—clouds the mind, chokes good affections, and provokes lust. “I discipline my body and bring it under strict control.” 1 Cor. 9:27. TheĀ flesh pampered—is liable to immorality.

(10) Take heed ofĀ idleness. When a man is idle, he is ready to receive any temptation. The devil sows most of hisĀ seeds of temptationĀ inĀ fallowĀ ground. Idleness is the cause of sodomy and immorality. “Sodom’s sins were pride,Ā laziness, and gluttony.” Ezekiel 16:49. When David was idle on the top of his house, he espied Bathsheba, and committed adultery with her. 2 Samuel 11:4. Jerome gave his friend counsel to be always well employed in God’s vineyard, that when the devil came, he might have no leisure to listen to temptation.

(11) To avoid fornication and adultery, let every man have a chaste, entireĀ love to his own wife. Ezekiel’s wife was the desire of his eyes. Ezekiel 24:16. When Solomon had dissuaded from immoral women, he prescribed a remedy against it. “RejoiceĀ with the wife of your youth.” Proverbs 5:18. It is notĀ havingĀ a wife—butĀ lovingĀ a wife— which makes a man live chastely. He who loves his wife, whom Solomon calls hisĀ fountain, will not go abroad to drink ofĀ muddy, poisoned waters. Pure marital love is a gift of God, and comes from heaven; but, like the vestal fire, it must be nourished, so that it does not go out. He who does not love his wife, is the likeliest person to embrace the bosom of a harlot.

(12) Labor to get theĀ fear of GodĀ into your hearts. “By the fear of the Lord, men depart from evil.” Proverbs 16:6. As the embankment keeps out the water, so the fear of the Lord keeps out immorality. Such as lack the fear of God, lack theĀ bridleĀ which should check them from sin! How did Joseph keep from his mistress’ temptation? The fear of God pulled him back! “How can I do this great wickedness, and sin againstĀ God!”Ā Genesis 39:9. Bernard callsĀ holy fear, “the door-keeper of the soul.” As a nobleman’s porter stands at the door, and keeps out vagrants, so the fear of God stands and keeps out all sinful temptations from entering.

(13) Take delight in theĀ Word of God. “How sweet are your words unto my taste.” Psalm 119:103. Chrysostom compares God’s Word to a garden. If we walk in this garden, and suck sweetness from theĀ flowers of the promises, we shall never care to pluck the “forbidden fruit.” “Let the Scriptures be my pure pleasure,” says Augustine. The reason why people seek after unchaste, sinful pleasures—is because they have nothing better. Caesar riding through a city, and seeing the women play withĀ dogsĀ andĀ parrots, said, “Surely, they have noĀ children.” So those who sport with harlots, have no better pleasures. He who has once tastedĀ Christ in a promise, is ravished with delight; and he wouldĀ  scorn aĀ temptationĀ to sin! Job said, that the Word was his “appointed food.” Job 23:12. No wonder then, that he made a “covenant with his eyes.”

(14) If you would abstain from adultery, use seriousĀ consideration.

Ā Ā Ā  [1] Consider that God sees you in the act of sin! He sees all yourĀ curtainĀ wickedness. He isĀ totus oculus—“all eye.” TheĀ cloudsĀ are no canopy, theĀ nightĀ is no curtain—to hide you from God’s eye! Whenever you sin—your Judge looks on! “I have seen your detestable acts—your adulteries and your neighings.” Jer. 13:27. “They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives. I know it and am a witness to it! declares the Lord.” Jer. 29:23.Ā

Ā Ā Ā  [2] Consider that few who are entangled in the sin of adultery, ever recover from the snare. “None that go to her return again.” Proverbs 2:19. This made some of the ancients conclude that adultery was an unpardonable sin; but it is not so. David repented. Mary Magdalene was a weeping penitent; upon her amorous eyes which sparkled with lust, she sought to be revenged, by washing Christ’s feet with her tears!Ā Some, therefore have recovered from this snare. “NoneĀ that go to her return,” that is, “very few.” It is rare to hear of any who are enchanted and bewitched with the sin of immorality, who recover from it. “I find more bitter than death the woman who is aĀ snare, whose heart is aĀ trapĀ and whose hands areĀ chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare.” Eccl. 7:26. Her “heart is a trap,” that is, she is subtle to deceive those who come to her; and “her hands are chains,” that is her embraces are powerful to hold and entangle her lovers. This consideration should make all fearful of this sin.Ā Soft pleasures, harden the heart.Ā

Ā Ā Ā  [3] Consider what Scripture says, which may lay a barricade in the way to this sin. “I will be a swift witness against the adulterers.” Malachi 3:5. It is good when God is a witness “forĀ us”, when He witnesses to our sincerity, as He did to Job’s; but it is sad to have God as a “witnessĀ againstĀ us.” “I,” says God, “will be a swift witness against the adulterer.” And who shall disprove God’s witness? He is bothĀ witnessĀ andĀ judge!Ā “God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.” Hebrews 13:4.Ā

Ā Ā Ā  [4] Consider the sad farewell, which the sin of adultery leaves. It leaves a hell in the conscience. “The lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil. But the result is as bitter as poison, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to hell.” Proverbs 5:3-5. TheĀ goddess DianaĀ was so artfully drawn, that she seemed to smile upon those whoĀ cameĀ intoĀ her temple—but frown on those whoĀ went out. So the harlotĀ smilesĀ on her lovers as theyĀ comeĀ to her—but at last, they come to theĀ frownĀ and the sting! “Until an arrow pierces his liver.” Proverbs 7:23. “Her end is bitter.”Ā

When a man has been virtuous, theĀ laborĀ is gone—but theĀ comfortĀ remains; but when he has been wicked and immoral, theĀ pleasureĀ is gone—but theĀ stingĀ remains. “He gains momentary pleasure—but after that, eternal torment,” says Jerome. When theĀ sensesĀ have been feasted with unchaste pleasures, theĀ soulĀ is left to pay the reckoning. Stolen waters are sweet; but, as poison, though sweet in the mouth, it torments the conscience.Ā Sin always ends in tragedy!Ā Sad is that which Fincelius reports of a priest in Flanders, who enticed a young girl to immorality. When she objected how vile a sin it was, he told her that by authority from the Pope, he could commit any sin; so at last he drew her to his wicked purpose. But when they had been together a while, in came the devil, and took away the harlot from the priest’s side, and, notwithstanding all her crying out, carried her away! If the devil should come and carry away all who are guilty of immorality in this nation—I fear more would be carried away, than would be left behind!

(16)Ā PrayĀ against this sin. Luther gave a lady this advice, that when any lust began to rise in her heart, she should go to prayer. Prayer is the best armor against sin; it quenches theĀ wild fire of lust.Ā If prayer will “cast out the devil,” it will certainly cast out those lusts which come from the devil.

O let us labor for soul purity!Ā To keep the soul pure—have recourse to the blood of Christ, which is the “fountain open, to cleanse from sin and impurity.” Zech. 13:1. A soulĀ steepedĀ in the briny tears of repentance, andĀ bathedĀ in the blood of Christ—is made pure! Say, “Lord, my soul is defiled! I pollute all I touch! O purge me with hyssop—let Christ’s blood sprinkle me, let the Holy Spirit anoint me. O make me pure, that I may be taken to heaven—where I shall be asĀ holyĀ as You would have me to be—and ashappyĀ as I can desire to be!”

The Delilah in the bosom!

Grace logo

The Delilah in the bosom!

(Thomas Watson, “The Lord’s Prayer“)

If you would not come short of the kingdom of heaven,Ā
take heed of indulging any sin. One millstone will drown,Ā
as well as more.Ā One sin lived inĀ will damn, as well as more.Ā
If any one sin reigns—it will keep you from reigning in theĀ
kingdom of heaven.Ā

Especially keep from sins of your natural constitution;Ā
your darling sin. “I kept myself fromĀ myĀ iniquity”—thatĀ
sin which my heart would soonest decoy and flatter meĀ
into. As in the hive there is one master bee—so in theĀ
heart there isĀ one master-sin.Ā Oh, take heed of this!

How may this darling-sin be known?

1. That sin for which a man cannot endure the arrow ofĀ
a reproof, is the bosom-sin. Men can be content to haveĀ
other sins declaimed against; but if a minister puts hisĀ
finger upon the sore, and touches upon that one specialĀ
sin—then their eyes flash with fire, they are enraged,Ā
and spit the venom of malice!

2. That sin which a man’s heart runs out most to, and heĀ
is most easily captivated by—isĀ the Delilah in the bosom!Ā
One man is overcome with wantonness, another by worldliness.Ā
It is a sad thing for a man to be so bewitched by a beloved sin
that he will part with the whole kingdom of heaven—to gratifyĀ
that lust!

3. That sin which a man is least inclined to part with, is theĀ
endeared sin. Of all his sons, Jacob could most hardly part withĀ
Benjamin. “Will you takeĀ BenjaminĀ away!” Gen 42:35. So saysĀ
the sinner, “This and that sin I have left—but mustĀ BenjaminĀ goĀ
too? Must I part with this delightful sin? That goes to my heart!”

Take heed especially of this master-sin. TheĀ strength of sinĀ
lies in the beloved sin, which, like a cancer striking at theĀ
heart, brings death.Ā

I have read of a monarch, who being pursued by the enemy,Ā
threw away the crown of gold on his head—that he might runĀ
the faster. Just so, the sin which you wore as a crown of goldĀ
must be thrown away—that you may run the faster to theĀ
kingdom of heaven.Ā

Oh, if you would not lose glory, mortify the beloved sin! Set it,Ā
as Uriah—in the forefront of the battle to be slain. By pluckingĀ
out thisĀ right eye—you will see the better to go to heaven!

The Trojan horse

The Trojan horse

(Thomas Watson, “The Lord’s Prayer“)

“Deliver us from evil.” Matthew 6:13

In this petition, we pray to be delivered from theĀ
evil of ourĀ heart, that it may not entice us to sin.Ā

The heart is theĀ poisoned fountain, from whenceĀ
all actual sins flow. “ForĀ from within, out of the heartĀ
of man
, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft,Ā
murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit,Ā
sensuality, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.”Ā
Mark 7:21-22.Ā

The cause of all evil lies in a man’s own bosom—allĀ
sin begins at the heart. Lust is first conceived in theĀ
heart—and then it is midwifed into the world. WhenceĀ
comes rash anger? The heart sets the tongue on fire.Ā
The heart is the shop where all sin is contrived andĀ
hammered out.Ā

The heart isĀ the greatest seducerĀ “Each one isĀ
tempted when he is carried away and enticed byĀ
his own lust.” James 1:14.Ā The devil could not hurtĀ
us—if our own hearts did not give consent.
Ā All thatĀ
he can do is to lay the bait—but it is our fault toĀ
swallow it! How needful, therefore, is this prayer,
“Deliver us from the evil of our hearts!”

It was Augustine’s prayer, “Lord, deliver me fromĀ
that evil man—myself!”

Beware of theĀ bosom traitor—the flesh. The heartĀ
of a man isĀ the Trojan horse—out of which comesĀ
a whole army of lusts! O let us pray to be deliveredĀ
from the lusts and deceits of our own heart!Ā

That very church which the world likes best!

That very church which the world likes best!

(Charles Spurgeon)

“As God has said: I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people. Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:16-18

That very church which the world likes best, is sure to be the church which God abhors most!

“People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud . . . lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God–having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them!” 2 Timothy 3:2-5

“We have learned to live with unholiness in our churches, and have come to look upon it as the natural and expected thing. It is scarcely possible in most places to get anyone to attend a church meeting, where the only attraction is God. One can only conclude that God’s professed children are bored with Him, for they must be wooed to church with a stick of striped candy, in the form of religious movies, games and entertainments.ā€

I started helping out at the church youth group 6 months ago and i’ve been so surprised with their desire for God and to know more about Him. It’s been an amazing 6 months of Theology and sharing, praying and growing deeper in our Faith. Ā

At the end of this term they organised a evening of Bowling and sharing a meal together which i was really looking forward to as i’ve not been bowling in over 15 years! šŸ˜€

šŸŽ„ The Glorious Incarnation #1 ~ Your Gift

šŸŽ„ The Glorious Incarnation #1

Heavenly Father,Ā We think we are ready for Christmas …Not because we have read the pages of the Bible, but because we have read our credit card statements,Ā And they say that we have left no stone unturned, and no gift unbought, if still unpaid for.Ā We stand ready to stagger under the weight of Christmas,Ā To eat and drink far too much,Ā To party with the best of them,Ā And to worry all the time that we’ve forgotten something.Ā And we’ll do it all, not always because we want to, but because everyone else is doing it, and we’ll go along for the ride.

Somewhere in all of this, Father, please feel free to stop us.Ā Any place, any time, just stop us in our tracks.Ā Stop us, grab our attention, and then place your gift in our hands where we can see it,Ā And in our hearts where we can feel it.Ā The gift of knowing that, a little over two thousand years ago, you stepped into the history of this world and placed yourself in a manger in a dirty backstreet stable,Ā And called yourself a Christ-Child. It was then that we could see you and understand you as we had never been able to do before: As Creator, as Spirit, and as a man who would walk unerringly towards a Cross.

Everything else, all the food, the fun, the partying, none of it matters, and none of it has any point at all, unless we grasp this simple, beautiful gift and press it close to our hearts and keep it there…..….. that we live with you, that we are one with you, Our Lord Immanuel.

What else is there to say?

Except thank you, Amen.

Feeding Sheep, or Amusing Goats?

An evil is in the ‘professed’ camp of the Lord, so gross in its impudence, that the most shortsighted Christian can hardly fail to notice it. During the past few years this evil has developed at an alarming rate. It has worked like leaven until the whole lump ferments!

The devil has seldom done a more clever thing, than hinting to the Church that part of their mission is to provide entertainment for the people, with a view to winning them. From speaking out the gospel, the Church has gradually toned down her testimony, then winked at and excused the frivolities of the day. Then she tolerated them in her borders. Now she has adopted them under the plea of reaching the masses!

My first contention is that providing amusement for the people is nowhere spoken of in the Scriptures as a function of the Church. If it is a Christian work why did not Christ speak of it? ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, and provide amusement for those who do not relish the gospel’.

No such words, however, are to be found. It did not seem to occur to Him. Where do entertainers come in? The Holy Spirit is silent concerning them. Were the prophets persecuted because they amused the people, or because they confronted them? The ‘concert’ has no martyr roll.

Again, providing amusement is in direct antagonism to the teaching and life of Christ and all His apostles. What was the attitude of the apostolic Church to the world? “You are the salt of the world”, not the sugar candy; something the world will spit out, not swallow.

Had Jesus introduced more of the bright and pleasant elements into His teaching, He would have been more popular. When “many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him,” I do not hear Him say, ‘Run after these people, Peter, and tell them we will have a different style of service tomorrow; something short and attractive with little preaching. We will have a pleasant evening for the people. Tell them they will be sure to enjoy it! Be quick, Peter, we must get the people somehow!’

No! Jesus pitied sinners, sighed and wept over them, but never sought to amuse them!

In vain will the epistles be searched to find any trace of the ‘gospel of amusement’. Their message is, “Therefore, come out from them and separate yourselves from them… Don’t touch their filthy things…” Anything approaching amusement is conspicuous by its absence. They had boundless confidence in the gospel and employed no other weapon.

After Peter and John were locked up for preaching, the Church had a prayer meeting, but they did not pray, ‘Lord, grant unto your servants that by a wise and discriminating use of innocent recreation we may show these people how happy we are’.

No! They did not cease from preaching Christ. They had no time for arranging entertainments. Scattered by persecution they went everywhere preaching the gospel. They turned the world upside down; that is the only difference from today’s church.

Lastly, amusement fails to effect the end desired. Let the heavy laden who found peace through the concert not keep silent! Let the drunkard to whom the dramatic entertainment had been God’s link in the chain of their conversion, stand up! There are none to answer! The mission of amusement produces no converts!

The need of the hour for today’s ministry is earnest spirituality joined with Biblical doctrine, so understood and felt, that it sets men on fire.
